Great news: Famously humble hostess to headline another Obama bash

posted at 11:21 am on July 23, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Remember, now, that this is the campaign and the candidate that wants to paint Mitt Romney as out of touch with the common man.  Recall this rather condescending call to the hoi polloi to begin vying for a fabulous night with the Upper Crust from Vogue editor Anna Wintour?

The Romney campaign gleefully responded with their own take on Obama’s campaign economics, compared to the economic performance of his administration:

Juan Williams called the ad a big mistake, practically a parody in and of itself:

By the way, that was hilarious. That looks like a parody. It looked like the Romney campaign planted Dr. Evil in the house of Obama and he said, ‘you know on the day the grim job numbers come out let’s have someone who reeks of ornamental excess announce that the peasants can have a place at the table.’ It’s just unbelievable. I mean, so you know, just a mistake.

Did they learn from that mistake?  Apparently not (via Politico):

Harvey Weinstein and Anna Wintour are teaming again to throw a fund-raiser for President Obama. The shindig will take place Aug. 6, in Greenwich, Conn., we hear. The movie mogul and the Vogue editor will co-host, sources said, while other co-chairs remain to be announced. The pair previously hosted an Obama dinner last year at Weinstein and Georgina Chapman’s West Village townhouse. Tickets will go for $35,800 per head.

Why allow Romney to take another swipe at Wintour?  According to the Wall Street Journal, the burn rate for the Obama campaign has alarm bells going off among Democrats:

The president spent twice as much as Mr. Romney in June, as his campaign purchased more TV ads, paid more than twice as many employees and spent millions of dollars on public-opinion polls, federal records show.

June was the second month in a row that Mr. Obama’s campaign dipped into the red, while the president was outraised by the Romney campaign. In May and June combined, the Obama campaign spent 20% more than it took in, records show.

Mr. Romney and his party have now socked away more money than Mr. Obama and the Democratic National Committee. Mr. Romney banked $170 million as of June 30, compared with $147 million for the president.

Mr. Romney also stands to benefit from spending by independent super PACs, which are free to collect contributions of unlimited size. These outside groups are expected to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for TV ads attacking Mr. Obama.

“The burn rate—the investment in infrastructure and polling—is great if you’ve got the resources to follow through,” said Douglas Schoen, who was a pollster for former President Bill Clinton. “It’s unclear to me whether the president has the resources.”

Team Obama spent like crazy in an attempt to score an early knockout, perhaps worried that later economic data would hit them hard unless Romney had been so thoroughly demonized that the Republican was no longer a viable option for voters.  That effort backfired on the campaign; they ran through a lot of cash and outspent their income, only to find that their relative position to Romney hadn’t changed at all.  That really shouldn’t surprise anyone, since people won’t pay close attention to the race until the end of next month.

And what will Team Obama do if they can’t replenish their resources at the same rate Romney has raised funds?  The WSJ paints a very bleak picture:

But some Democrats worry that the overhead built by the Obama camp over the past 15 months will prove impossible to sustain. Unless fundraising picks up, the Obama campaign may enter the season’s final stretch confronting hard choices: paring salaries, scaling back advertising or pulling out of swing states in a bid to control costs, these Democrats say.

Faced with those options, “Nuclear” Wintour looks positively appealing.

Axelrod has to know the optics on this are terrible, even among Blue State voters — it almost paints Team Obama’s finances as being in the same precarious position as Greece, except that going to Angela Merkel for another loan from Germany has to be less demeaning than having to go back to Anna Wintour for another fundraiser (though being paired with Harvey Weinstein does conjure up some Odd Couple-like thoughts of how Oscar and Felix are going to get along putting this little shindig together).

That effort backfired on the campaign; they ran through a lot of cash and outspent their income, only to find that their relative position to Romney hadn’t changed at all.

IMO, Obama’s people thought that they’d be able to run this campaign like 2008 with people literally standing in line to support the jug-eared Kenyan. Well, since 2008, fewer of those supporters have jobs. They’ve seen their retirement plans dwindle down and their houses go underwater. They’ve seen family or neighbors face the same thing. They’ve seen the massive debt inflicted on their children. And through it all the jug-eared Kenyan smirks and tells us that nobody created a business without help.

In short, this isn’t 2008 and the days of chanting O-BAM-A are over. Stupid people making the claim that they will no longer have to pay for gas or their mortgages have been suitably silenced (or institutionalized). Obama inexplicably still has supporters but they certainly are not doing so with the same mindless zeal that occurred in 2008 when America dabbled with both socialism and affirmative action.

Lourdes on July 23, 2012 at 11:44 AM

The Obama campaign burn rate is $1.93 million/day. That is unsustainable. “Help us, Anna Wintour. You’re our only… assistance.”

In a single month, Obama’s campaign went from $3 million indebtedness at the end of May to $32 million at the end of June. At this rate, there simply isn’t going to be any money left for anyone else in the Dem universe in the general. Oh, wait. Obama already told them that.

To add…just read Animal Farm, some works of literacy are so accurate, so perfect, that they will live forever.

Never listen when they tell you that Man Republican and the animals democrats have a common interest, that the prosperity of the one is the prosperity of the others. It is all lies.

Man is the only real enemy we have. Remove Man from the scene, and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished for ever.

Whenever anything went wrong it became usual to attribute it to Snowball Bush. If a window was broken or a drain was blocked up, someone was certain to say that Snowball Bush had come in the night and done it, and when the key of the store-shed was lost, the whole farm was convinced that Snowball Bush had thrown it down the well. Curiously enough, they went on believing this even after the mislaid key was found under a sack of meal.

The importance of keeping the pigs in good health was all too obvious. So it was agreed without further argument that the milk and the windfall apples (and also the main crop of apples when they ripened) should be reserved for the pigs alone.

Unemployment for women is 7.9% it said. At first I thought that was given as a selling point for Obama to gain women votes. That’s the problem, and I say this only because I want us to win the election, but this is obviously somewhat of an ambiguous grey area whether 7.9% is good or bad under current circumstances.

The point: don’t hang our hat solely on the economy! The election is not primarily about the economy. Many voters will see the economy as either a less important issue or one where it is a toss up between the two candidates on who would be better on that issue. These voters, which certainly make up a decisive percentage, will need other reasons to justify a vote for or against Obama.

slickwillie2001 on July 23, 2012 at 11:52 AM

It’s kind of eye opening when you look at how Obama and Romney manage their campaign funds. Romney builds a surplus and Obama spends faster than he can get his hands on it to the point of being in debt. This is a perfect illustration of each of their approaches to spending, whether it be running a campaign or running a country.
I hope more folks take notice.

Why pay for the plot, the headstone, and all those other over-inflated costs only meant to raise profits for greedy corporations? Why, a funeral is literally a money pit!

“Just think! A family can save all that needless expense by having the state pay for a simple and attractive pine casket made of sweet-smelling biodegradable pine, a lovely and safe government-owned location, and a marker with its own unique number so family never visit the wrong location!

“Donate to Obama! It’s not only good for the country, it’s also a promise your loved-one’s vote will never again go uncounted!”

The president spent twice as much as Mr. Romney in June, as his campaign purchased more TV ads, paid more than twice as many employees and spent millions of dollars on public-opinion polls, federal records show.

lmao, King Barry`s blowing thru cash like a drunken sailor on leave (NO offense to drunken sailors on leave), just yesterday the 0bama campaign was airing his negative anti-Romney crap here on Long Island…the bastion of liberal love. I`m a 20 minute drive from the epicenter of suburban elite liberal thought…The Hamptons (you have to say that with an upper-crusty droll though). To me, if the 0bama gang is spending their (ever) precious dollars for tv time here…it has to look real bad with their internals…makes me chuckle and smile.

7/23
Rasmussen has Romney up by 3 , 46 to 43
Gallup has Barry up by 1.

Barry needs to spend another 100 millions dollars quick to attack Romney for Bain and tax returns.

If his numbers start to crater, and from the post about minnesota that seems possible, is there any chance someone makes a move at convention? I guess only Hillary could.

cpaulus on July 23, 2012 at 1:14 PM

Does ediquette call for her to remove her hair helmet when addressing the President?

mouell on July 23, 2012 at 12:21 PM

I would say that women aren’t usually required to remove their hats, but I’m not entirely convinced that’s a woman.

CurtZHP on July 23, 2012 at 1:24 PM

Team Obama spent like crazy

Pretty much sums up the last 4 years

SomeCallMeJohn on July 23, 2012 at 1:33 PM

The fact that Obama is spending far more than he’s taking in shouldn’t surprise anyone. Its the same way he and the Democrats have been running the nation.

I don’t think that anyone, not even Hillary Clinton, would start a floor fight at the convention should it become apparent, at last, to the Democrats that Obama is going to lose.

Anyone who tried to replace Obama as the nominee would have no money, no infrastructure, no time to make their case to the nation that they could offer anything new and viable. Further, Clinton’s tenure as Secretary of State has been less than stellar. The general disillusionment which has gripped the Democrat’s base would only be exacerbated by a fight over the nomination at the convention.

Finally, Pelosi has been giving House Democrats a pass to stay away from the convention that is tantamount to a directive. If the thinking in the party was that there might even possibly be a change of nominee, I don’t believe that this would be the case.

To quote the headline from a HotAir posting yesterday, this is just another example of

Obama: When I try something that doesn’t work, I don’t try it again — except when I do

stukinIL4now on July 23, 2012 at 1:50 PM

But some Democrats worry that the overhead built by the Obama camp over the past 15 months will prove impossible to sustain

That is the money quote IMHO. Dem dollars simply do not go as far as Rep. money, everybody want’s a taste of the action. Of course the soft money in terms contributions by big labor will still play a big role, but at some point, even that will run dry. Those on the payroll will be looking to milk it regardless of outcome. I am rather enjoying that thought.

I know that Vogue editor Anna Wintour is assumed to have fashion sense, but what is it with her wearing that F-UGLY sweater? Are burlap bags back in season? Does brightly colored garbage go with everything? Quick someone call the common-sense fashion police on this beastly thing! (…and on the sweater too!)

Plumped lips are OK unless they have “Inflate to 9.5 PSI” stamped on the underside.

If I have a lot of money I would reserve function rooms for dinners in the expansive restaurants where the elite liberal go to… Then I will go to the inner cities and bring dozens of people to these restaurants to have their dinner in these restaurants… Then take a video of the reaction of the racist liberal hypocrites when they see the inner city folks dinning in their restaurants… Video it and post it on youtube for the world to see how incredibly racist and utterly hypocrite the liberal elites are… Nothing the restaurants owners can do because I would have already paid for the function rooms and the dinners…

Socialism is the favored economic system of those who are already rich; because it makes sure that the lower class of people will never get the chance to become rich themselves.

lorien1973 on July 23, 2012 at 11:35 AM

Excellent point… although the majority rich Americans do not favor socialism there is still a huge number of rich Americans that favor socialism for the reason that you mentioned above, it is how they want to be the elites… In Europe I would say that a majority of rich people favor socialism because of the reason you mentioned above…

mnjg on July 23, 2012 at 2:46 PM

Slap me for saying it, but Juan Williams got it exactly right.
