Poll: What was the Obamateurism of the Week?
posted at 9:31 am on July 22, 2012 by Ed Morrissey
If I build it, they will come … to vote for this week’s biggest Obamateurism, that is! I’d try to squeeze four years of gaffes into one poll, but you’d be so dizzy we’d have to call the paralegals paramedics. People may have hoped that we would run so short on material that we’d have to kiss off this feature, but if you believe that with a presidential campaign yet to come … I have a bridge to sell you, too.
Previous weekly “winners” in 2012:
- “But the nature of this office is also to tell a story to the American people…”
- Pitches amnesty policy at naturalization ceremony of people who entered legally
- Removing silverware from tables before speaking to Hispanic voters
- Scolds American Crossroads for lack of transparency … on same day Obama asserted executive privilege in Fast & Furious probe
- “The private sector is doing fine“
- Declares Lech Walesa “too political” to accept award, gives another to Dolores Huerta, chair of Democratic Socialists of America
- “Polish death camp“
- “[T]hose of us who have spent time in the real world . . .”
- Adds himself into presidential histories of his predecessors, screws up JFK quote
- “When I think about, ah, those soldiers or airmen or Marines, sailors, who are out there fighting on my behalf …”
- Includes Nazi collaborator/Hitler admirer in proclamation for Jewish American Heritage Month
- Obamas griped that the American public just did not appreciate their exceptional leader
- Gets annoyed when asked about number of vacations, doesn’t answer question
- “I’m confident that the Supreme Court will not take what would be an unprecedented, extraordinary step of overturning a law that was passed by a strong majority of a democratically elected Congress.”
- “This is my last election. After my election I have more flexibility.”
- Blames Fox News for his unpopularity because “they hear Obama is a Muslim 24/7, and it begins to seep in”
- Attacks Limbaugh while remaining silent on Maher contribution to his super-PAC
- Says “when the chips are down, I have Israel’s back,” WH claims it’s not a military doctrine
- Apology to Karzai “calmed things down“
- Uses Boeing plant in SC to cheer manufacturing after his NLRB tried to shut it down
- Emphasizes graduation rates in SOTU, cuts DC voucher program that nearly doubled grad rates
- “Well, it turns out our Founders designed a system that makes it more difficult to bring about change that I would like sometimes.”
- Finds claim of unemployment “interesting” because he is getting “the word” that woman’s husband should have no trouble finding work
- Hails Roe as essential to allow “our daughters … to fulfill their dreams“
- Shuts down DisneyWorld in order to promote tourism
- “He didn’t want to take pictures with any more soldiers; he was complaining about it[.]
- Famous opponent of signing statements issues one covering 17 provisions of bill he signed
Previous Obamateurisms of the Year:
- Giving 2 minutes of “shout-outs” before getting to the Fort Hood shooting (2009)
- Obama leaves Clinton at press conference podium on tax deal to attend Christmas party (2010)
- “I would put our legislative and foreign policy accomplishments in our first two years against any president— with the possible exceptions of Johnson, F.D.R., and Lincoln.” (2011)

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

Obamatrons willingly throwing their votes his way.

I could see this being as memorable as “I did not have sex with that woman.” Maybe even more than that.

I would have lied and pressed one. If Barry can lie on a daily basis I figure it’s OK for me.
DaveDief on July 22, 2012 at 10:55 AM
Of course that was the winner, but next week’s winner might be Mr. President calling out Romney for quoting his exact words.

It certainly blew “doing fine” right out of the water.

THIS. ^^^
I voted for “You didn’t build that” too. It should be the defining phrase of his administration, it should be hung around his neck like the albatross it is, and there should be no escaping from it.

Door Number 3, Mr President. I expect to see this theme in commercials from now until Nov. What a gift for Mitt.

National. Treasure.
I wish my mind worked like that.
turfmann on July 22, 2012 at 11:07 AM
I would like to predict that this will be the OOTY, but Lord only knows what Zero will drop on us next.
Mitt, if you lose the election to Ochoomba after he hands you a gifts such as this, then you deserve to lose.
One would think the crap economy, Obamacare, Fast and Furious, and four years of malaise would be enough.

Philly on July 22, 2012 at 11:18 AM
Yep. It would be hilarious to tamper with their script.
Had some pollster call me years ago and she made a mistake in the middle of one question. Instead of just going on, she went back to the beginning and started over. LOL

I don’t see many ads in NY (why bother) but I was traveling last week and saw an Obama ad talking about he was for lowering the taxes on the middle class while Romney was for giving tax breaks to the wealthy. This was a twofer impression that Obama is both a tax cutter and for the common man. It said nothing about his proposed extention of the Bush tax cuts for the middle class being only for one year. I think this gives the GOP an opportunity to say that Obama must want to raise taxes on the Middle Class after the election is over or he would make their tax cuts permanent. Then they could pass a bill making the Middle class portion of the Bush tax cut permanent and challenge the Dem Senate and Obama to support it or be revealed as down the road tax hikers on the middle class. If they do not go for it, it will be obvious that their real problem with the Bush tax cuts was that they were tax cuts rather than that they were skewed to the rich (which they weren’t).
Right now the Dems are getting the best of all worlds, claim to hold down middle class taxes but after the election is over lay down terms that will effectively mean an end to middle class tax cuts as well as those for the more affluent.
KW64 on July 22, 2012 at 11:33 AM
This might take the Øbamateurism of the Year Award.
keebs on July 22, 2012 at 11:43 AM
That same ad has been playing once or twice a day over the last three days during the Open (AKA British Open) on ESPN. With this audience, one would have to question whether it’s a waste of money on Team Obama’s part, which is just fine with me.
Of course, whoever wins will owe his success to those who built the golf course, the Royal Family in this instance, I think.

katablog.com on July 22, 2012 at 11:48 AM
I think we’d all agree the OOTW could be stipulated this week.
Those words need to be played 24/7 in every swing state and every state that could be a pick up from now until the election.
GeorgieGirl9 on July 22, 2012 at 11:57 AM
Exactly why Romney should LEAD with that insane quote at every campaign stop between now and Nov. Quote it live in the debates. Force the LSM to cover it, and force Obama to defend it without his teleprompter.

A couple of funny things about this week, all of these could have won, in other weeks, but the business one really shows how out of touch he is with the American public. Secondly, the Golden Gate Bridge deal, is he using ABC to do his research for him, he has some really terrible fact checkers there.

Sekhmet on July 22, 2012 at 12:24 PM
I would like to see an ad featuring America’s collectivist future if Ogabe gets in again:
Drab, lifeless, boring people slowly shuffling around in their gray clothes. Lining up for buses, trains and at the stores (with almost bare shelves). All heading off to their government jobs with Big Brother controlling their whole lives.
On the streets lots of garbage and dust and dirt, but very few cars. Most businesses are boarded up and the only ones running are the government stores. Massive billboards along the roads with Ogabe (Big Brother) quotes on them.
Make this ad with a 1984 theme. Throw in the collectivist results from the old Soviet Union and pound Ogabe with it. Make sure the future is clear to American voters – a vote for Ogabe will take us to collectivism and a miserable existence.
Ogabe on July 22, 2012 at 12:38 PM
The obvious winner is a landslide and would most likely win Obamateurism of his entire Presidential Term. I feel saddened the other four were in the shadow of the winner for this week, they were pretty good in themselves.
jeridhill on July 22, 2012 at 12:48 PM
This week’s vote is just not fair. We need an “All of the Above” option for what has to be one of Obummer’s best weeks ever!
I don’t think even Jimmy Carter had so many “open mouth, insert foot” moments in a single week.
Oxymoron on July 22, 2012 at 12:52 PM
But the campaign has outdone itself. Now they have announced a raffle to have Barack Obama appear in a family picture with the lucky winning family. Seriously.

workingclass artist on July 22, 2012 at 12:53 PM
Not even close, was there any doubt the moment he utter those words. I doubt for one second that most HA readers didn’t think this was the winner without even considering it.
We still have around 100 days until the election, somehow I doubt this will be beaten. But then I remember that the powers that be are trying to ween Barky of of TOTUS and I can only hope for more of these “mask slipping moments”.
D-fusit on July 22, 2012 at 12:55 PM
Just. Freakin’. Yikes. The creepy meter has been shattered.
So one day, the kids can look at their family portrait and say “There’s mom and dad, but they didn’t raise us. Somebody else made that happen, and he’s right there in the picture.”
It amazingly outdoes the bridal registry stunt, so it’s highly plausible that he’ll outdo his “you didn’t build that” remark.

Obama of Roanoke: We Saw You Coming
“….Obama let slip in a momentous way what many of us knew all along about him.”
“Ayn Rand saw Obama of Roanoke coming way back in the 1950′s, before Barry Soetoro was even born. Ronald Reagan saw him coming in the 60s and 70s — and was especially prescient on how he would use the medical industry to advance his goals — even though our current President was but a choom boy “doing some blow” back in the day.”
“Obama of Roanoke, understand, is not merely a specific person named Barack Hussein Obama. He is Van Jones. He is Elizabeth Warren. He is Valerie Jarrett. He is Steven Chu and Cass Sunstein. He is Jeremiah Wright and Frank Marshall Davis and Karl Marx and many others. Obama of Roanoke is not some benign elegant speaker. Obama of Roanoke is a malignant mindset. His fingerprints are all over the biggest disasters in world history. For this reason, he was and is utterly predictable long before Friday last.”

I almost agree with you. But I don’t guess I will ever get over his “who cares” reaction to the shooting at Fort Hood. This set the tone of his presidency. I do a slow burn every time I think of him doing that shout out first. My prayer is that he will never again get the chance to disrespect our military.

“If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” — OOTW of the 21st Century.

If he has cut taxes for the MIDDLE CLASS each year, why then did mine go UP last year and we made several thousand less $$ than the years before?? He is just a BS artist.
John 5 on July 22, 2012 at 2:53 PM
you should have divided this weeks Obamateurism up into 2 polls or maybe an A & B winner, I mean barry flubs enough to have 2 winners.
1- for “you didn’t build that” which was the run away winner
2- for all the others….i actually voted for one of the others, “I’ve cut taxes every year that I’ve been President by $3,600 for the typical middle-class family.”
DiabloAzure on July 22, 2012 at 3:26 PM
This week was chock full ‘o selections. Each a winner in their own right – but each dwarfed by his assertion that small business owners aren’t responsible for their success.
What a jackwad.
Hill60 on July 22, 2012 at 3:42 PM
A couple of those could be the O of the Week . . . for other weeks. “You didn’t build that” might be the O of the year.

Ed will need a new term to describe Obama’s biggest Obamateurism in his career. While a previous poster suggested OOOP, I prefer OoPS (Obamateurism of President Screwup, or substitute another word for S like socialist, snake, Satan, suck, etc.).
Gladtobehere on July 22, 2012 at 8:02 PM
Unless Obama says or does something even more stupid than now, which is possible, I think we have our Obamateurism not only of the year but his entire Presidency. I don’t even want to conjecture what he could possibly do worse.
