Will the real Barack Obama please stand up?

posted at 12:31 pm on July 21, 2012 by Howard Portnoy

President Obama’s “you didn’t build that” speech now stands poised to become a defining issue of the 2012 campaign. At the very least, it has moved the conversation away from accusations regarding Mitt Romney’s years at Bain Capital and trained the spotlight on the president, whose supporters now ruefully acknowledge that the week-old issue is not going away on its own. This leaves them in the unenviable position of playing defense, mostly by parsing the president’s words: never a good place for a candidate or his backers to be.

One article of this ilk goes partly on the offensive (in both senses of the word) by attempting to impugn the integrity of Obama’s opponents. Its author is Paul Waldman, who is also the author of the holier-than-thou-titled Being Right is Not Enough: What Progressives Must Learn From Conservative Success.

His latest piece, which appears in The American Prospect, is noteworthy not because of his efforts to explain away what Obama actually meant to say, which are feeble and miss the forest for the trees, but because of his snooty and gratuitously mean-spirited introduction:

By now, we can all agree that a large portion of the Republican party [and by extension, one presumes, conservatives as a whole] has created in their [sic] minds an imaginary Barack Obama, one who is either a literal or philosophical foreigner (Romney has begun dropping the word ‘foreign’ in as often as he can when discussing Obama), who hates America (here’s Rush Limbaugh on Monday: ‘I think it can now be said, without equivocation—without equivocation—that this man hates this country’), and one who hates success, hates rich people, and hates capitalism itself. [Emphasis added]

The notion of an imaginary Barack Obama is an intriguing one, largely because Obama, whether by accident or design, has been so elusive a public figure. There are still whole chapters of his past, including his childhood and his years at Columbia University, that remain shrouded in mystery. Factor in his 1995 memoir, Dreams From My Father, substantial portions of which have been shown to be fictitious, and the crisis of identity deepens.

It becomes apparent that an imaginary Barack Obama is all there is, or put differently that Obama is whatever you imagine him to be. There are some who imagine Obama to be  one of the greatest presidents of all time. (Paul Waldman is not likely one of them: He is far too cerebral for that.) Others share the opinion of historian Michael Beschloss, who told radio talk show host Don Imus in November of 2008 that Obama is the smartest man with the highest IQ ever to be elected to the presidency. (Obama has since committed numerous lapses in logic, fact, grammar, and judgment, which betray this assessment).

Some, including Waldman, see the president as the man who stepped in “right at the moment when the economy was reeling from the worst downturn since the Great Depression” and rescued the auto industry, a claim that Wall Street Journal columnist James Taranto calls “fraudulent,” adding:

What he did was use political muscle to intervene in a bankruptcy process in order to ensure a settlement on terms favorable to his supporters, the United Auto Workers union, at the expense of taxpayers (or ‘freeloaders,’ in the president’s parlance) and bondholders. It would be more accurately characterized as an act of larceny than salvation.

And then of course there are people, including this writer, who regard the Obama presidency as a failed experiment in which a man with no leadership experience or executive credentials was handed the most powerful job in this nation mainly on the strength of what turned out to be his largely imagined oratory skills, plus the color of his skin. The Paul Waldmans of the world will accuse those subscribing to this view of racism, but they should back off. Absent any concrete evidence that establishes  who Barack Obama is or what he stands for, everyone is entitled to his own imagined version of the man.

What’s changed? Barky’s “spread the wealth” statement was the defining issue of the 2008 campaign … until super-idiot and Presidential fall-taker Juan McShame squelched it.

I wonder if Condi Rice will tell us all, again, that Barky would make a fine two-term Precedent?

Like I ask an Independent Democrat that voted for him in 2008.

WHAT about the last four years do you want more of? Silence from the other end.

Like I told a minority voter that said you didn’t know “scheet” if you didn’t vote for Obama……

….RISING unemployment in the black community of over 14%, $5 trillion plus in new debt, and food and fuel prices continuing to climb, with NO END IN SIGHT. What of that do we want more of? Silence on the other end again.

Obama voters (especially in the minority communities) KNOW that he has been a disaster but they are such racists they can’t see/acknowledge that 50 years of support of the Democrats has nearly destroyed their entire community.

Keep it focused on Results, results, results…..and people can understand that.

I agree in part with your assessment as to how he was handed the job, but you left out a couple of other important factors, namely who his opponent was, the feckless John McCain, and what’s known as Bush fatigue.

His so called oratory skills and the color of his skin certainly attracted a respectable turnout but the latter factors considerably depressed turnout on the right.

The 2010 midterm vote, sans McCain and Bush, bears that out.

BTW, What happened to Barry Soetoro?

Maybe if a proper birth certificate and school records and other such verifiable authentic documentation were provided we would not have to worry about the imaginary Obama.

In any case, he was created out of whole cloth by the Fabian-Socialist, Radical Leftist Progressive movement going back to the days of his sitting on Uncle Frank’s knee and listening to stories about “how de folk got it stuck to them by The Man and how getting The Man, tearing The Man down, making The Man suffer for all the ills of the world…yeah, Barry, that’s what ya gots to do wif yo life…” That far back.

Barry might be a figment of some evil plot, but he is no imaginary danger to the Republic.

This is no “failed experiment.”

Obama is well on his way to achieving his life goal, the fundamental transformation of America. We now sit at the edge of the precipice — and it is quite possible that he has positioned us so far that there is no real way back from his objective, the destruction of America as a prosperous free nation.

Even if he is not re-elected he has positioned the ponderous federal bureaucracy with so much power that America will never recover. Even if all the left-wing Communist sympathizers are removed from office the power-hungry will remain in place in the innumerable federal agencies. Even if Romney is elected it is unlikely that he will disassemble this monstrosity even if he wants to.

You know the more I think about his statement, it seems like even more people should be insulted. What about the people who “run” their families so that they are insulated from the ups and downs of the economy? Not that anyone can be completely immune to the raising prices but many are riding it out using conservative ideology as best they can. There are people who are upside down in their homes or lost a substantial chunk of their income due to the times but are surviving. We do still get to use the roads though.

President Obama’s “you didn’t build that” speech now stands poised to become a defining issue of the 2012 campaign.

It does define Obama well. He is the patron saint of all those millions who have not tried hard to be successful, who feel like losers or who are lazy, weak willed, ready to grab the freebees government has to offer and maybe feel very justified in getting them because of “the legacy of slavery” or whatever. He tells them what they want to hear, that it’s not their fault, they’re just not lucky with big help from parents or powerful friends because no one achieves on their on.

Romney represents more the opposite, and will not be so sympathetic to the losers and lazy go for nothings of this country. Romney will just make them feel like losers while Obama will pat them on the heads – they just have to vote for him and they will.

Chessplayer on July 21, 2012 at 12:54 PM

So, Valerie Jarrett is not doing so well as POTUS but Obama’s handicap has vastly improved. OK, then. I think he has been much more successful than you give him credit. From KWR’s link

Just on the economic front alone it was an awesome week:

1. Weekly jobless claims shot up to 386,000.

2. Foreclosures are hitting our most vulnerable citizens.

3. Factory activity contracted for a second month in a row.

4. Home sales dropped a whopping 5.4% — the biggest drop in nine months.

5. Retail sales dropped for the third straight month.

6. Consumer confidence dipped to 84.7.

7. U.S. business inventories increased by .3%…

8. …sales dropped .1%.

9. Food prices are skyrocketing. [I swear, if those peanut butter and mayonnaise jars get any smaller, Lady M’s going to have to order them by the case lot]

10. More Americans are getting federal disability than jobs.

Plus, I see that unemployment rose in 27 of the 57 states last month. How can that be good for our team? We better get the spinners back in the game, because it might be time for a good story right about now.

I Caesar, er Mussolini, is doing ‘great’.

I blame 8 years of media assault on Bush without Bush defending his record and policies, a 2006 democrat congress running up spending and minimum wage increase creates downturn in the economy, the economy dips in October 2008 due to foreign investment? George Soros money? McCain was up by 4% at that point.

I agree McCain was a poor choice, but he was leading until the October surprise tipped the economy. Remember, democrats attempted to create a recession for 6 years for Bush, even though unemployment was at 4.5%.

Either David Axelrod was lying to the SEC, i which case he might have committed a felony–or he was lying to the American people, or he is a master of crony corruptioin for making millions off of ObamaCare!!

I think it’s really stunning that David Axelrod, sole CEO and proprietor of a business that made millions off of ObamaCare, actually left the company in January 2009, but started receiving payouts from it beginning in December, 2009–a fact that is supremely ironic considering that Axelrod/Obama are smearing Romney for doing the same thing at Bain, don’t you think?

This whole article is really MUST READ STUFF, for background, but clearly, the Romney campaign could use this for an advertisement:

David Axelrod Lefty Lumberjack

While David Axelrod decried these alleged diabolical GOP special interests and their obscene money-grubbing, his firms had raked in more than their “fair share” of obscene profits.

Bloomberg reported that Axelrod’s AKP&D and a Washington-based firm called GMMB profited handsomely from Obama’s health care reform.

“Two firms that received M$343.3 million to handle advertising for Barack Obama’s White House run last year have profited from his top priority as president by taking on his push for healthcare overhaul,” reported Bloomberg in August 2009. “One is AKPD Message and Media, the Chicago-based firm headed by David Axelrod until he left last Dec. 31 to serve as senior adviser to the president. Axelrod was Obama’s top campaign strategist and is now helping sell the healthcare plan.”

Bloomberg reported that in 2009 AKP&D and GMMB received $12 million in advertising business (producing and placing ads) from Health Economy Now, a coalition that included the Washington-based Pharmaceutical Research & Manufacturers of America, better known as PhRMa, which was pushing an overhaul of America’s health care system. The two firms were reportedly splitting the $12 million.

Bloomberg stated that Axelrod, president and sole shareholder of AKP&D from 1985 until he sold his interest after Obama’s presidential victory, was still owed $2 million from the firm, which was due to be paid to Axelrod in installments beginning December 31, 2009. Confirming that figure, Newsweek’s Michael Isikoff added that the installments would start with a $350,000 check due to Axelrod by the end of the year. Axelrod’s son, Michael, works at the firm.”

Let’s turn the tables and take “you didn’t build that” and put the federal government on the front burner.

Back during the R3v0lutionary War and the subsequent writing of the Constitution, there was no federal government. All of the power rested with the people, and the states–each of whom had their own agenda. In the drafting of the US Constitution, both the people and the states delegated limited powers to the federal government for certain activities–common defense, trade, treaties and so forth. Thus, the People and the States BUILT the federal government. Those people, men like Jefferson, Adams, Monroe etc. crafted the federal government at their own hand (mind you, they did it sans roads/bridges/public schools).

So when it comes down to “you didn’t build that“, Mr. Obama, you happen to be right. Look around, champ, because if there is a mouthy, ungrateful individual sitting atop a whole heaping mountain of success that someone else crafted for him—well, he might be a guy that is staring back at you in the mirror.

He has been successful, at destroying the land and the producers.

Yup. I have wondered why the legacy media want to promote a Marxist POTUS…but then I realized what power they would be given as a member of the elite media that fundamentally changed America. We need to rid ourselves of much more than just Dear Leader.

“you didn’t build that”

I guess that’s a change from, “It’s not that I want to punish you for your success … I just think it’s better when we spread the wealth around.” The creed of his 2008 camp-pain.

Now, he wants to punish you for success he denies you had anything to do with, in the first place. Change.

When this quote worked its way up from the conservative media to the Romney campaign, they knew they had something. Sure, it’s obvious that when Obama said “you didn’t build that” he was talking about roads and bridges. But who cares? You can take that one sentence out of context, lie about what “that” in the quote refers to, and you’ve got evidence of Obama’s America-hating heart.

I think everyone knows that he meant “roads and bridges.” It is strange to contemplate that you, however, so confident in your assertions, might be unaware that he was talking about more than roads and bridges. To use his remark as a reference to all the abstractions it embodies is not to “take it out of context” — it is to use it properly, as a reference to everything he actually meant by his words. For example, when Obama said this (the “context” that you assert proves he was talking about “roads and bridges”):

The point is, is that when we succeed, we succeed because of our individual initiative, but also because we do things together. There are some things, just like fighting fires, we don’t do on our own. I mean, imagine if everybody had their own fire service. That would be a hard way to organize fighting fires.

– he was actually talking about a much more general idea than “fighting fires.” Obama would probably be saddened by your laziness. I would. If I were trying to teach people a basic concept about their general societal interdependence, I would hate for you to distill the ocean of my lofty thoughts into a cup of “roads and bridges,” even to protect me from political harm.

You’ve already admitted that you can’t understand elementary things, and it is obvious that you don’t like people like me. So, let’s let Obama wrap up his speech about the importance of NASA funding:

So we say to ourselves, ever since the founding of this country, you know what, there are some things we do better together. That’s how we funded the GI Bill. That’s how we created the middle class. That’s how we built the Golden Gate Bridge or the Hoover Dam. That’s how we invented the Internet. That’s how we sent a man to the moon. We rise or fall together as one nation and as one people, and that’s the reason I’m running for President — because I still believe in that idea. You’re not on your own, we’re in this together.

Yes. I’m afraid we are.

One of the best lines heard lately was from Izzy Kapp, retired shop foreman from the old Republic Steel Plant in Cleveland .

At 17 Izzy immigrated to the USA from England after his family escaped from Poland when he was 12. A more proud American can not be imagined. He often said, “I am overwhelmed by the opportunities my county offers me!”

All three of his children graduated from college. One got an MS, another got a JD, and the third an MD degree. It took Izzy13 years of night school to get a college degree.

When a young Black kid was being laid off at the end of his 90 day evaluation period he confronted Izzy in the huge Republic Steel Plant break room at lunch and tried to intimidate him with all sorts of NAACP/ACLU etc. threats.

“I want this on-the-record in front of everybody.” the young man said. “You’ firin’ me ’cause I’m Black!”

Without even looking up from his sandwich the foreman said
“No. We hired you because you were black. We’re firing you because you’re useless.”

Not to quibble over details…but the Golden Gate Bridge was a private capital venture…and government, federal and state, tried hard, very hard, to prevent it.

And of course, Moslem outreach is a priority at NASA…if Obama’s words are to be believed.

Ahha! Now I Understand…if Obama’s words are to be believed.

They aren’t. They simply are not to be believed.

Nevermind.

Keeping yourself, and your employees, from being a burden on society IS giving back. That’s heroic in itself. The Left doesn’t recognize that as a benefit, because the Left is not inconvenienced by the poor. They (the Left) never had any impulse to be their brother’s keeper in the first place (e.g. the President’s half-brother lives in tin-roof shack,) so the poor are no burden to the Left. The poor just represent a handy block of voters to seduce.

Notes.

Misspoken possibility (a): “roads and bridges” — you didn’t build that [them, those].

Misspoken possibility (b): “roads and bridges, fire departments, computer networks, etc.” — You didn’t build [all] that.

I mean what I say (c): “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that.” (no errors)

… It might be (b). But the speech would mean exactly the same thing as it would mean if it were (c).

I for one would like to see his college transcripts. How could a person who admits his last two years in high school were spent in a daze get good enough grades to enter college. I would like to know if Obama is dazzling us with brilliance or baffling us with BS.

banzaibob on July 21, 2012 at 1:04 PM

It wasn’t just his last years of high school that were spent in a drug-induced haze, he (or Ayers) wrote in his auto-hagiography that he spent his time at Occidental College drinking heavily, smoking weed, and snorting blow, when he could afford it.

In his book on Obama, Maraniss says Obama had a B+ average at Occidental — but he gives no source for this claim. (Perhaps it was Obama himself; remember when he graded his performance as president as a “solid B+”?). A B+ average wouldn’t have been good enough for most students (i.e., white, Asian, or those not well-connected to academic radicals) to transfer into Ivy League Columbia University, but somehow it was no problem for Obama.

The idea that Obama is some type of genius is laughable, and to claim he is the smartest American president — when we’ve been blessed to have had in that office some actual men of genius like James Madison and Thomas Jefferson — is beyond parody.

But…I was told by all sorts of folks, to include my Progressive siblings, that Obama was the most eloquent, gifted, able speaker we’ve had in the Whiter House, since…well, since Lincoln.

If this Obama guy can’t write his own stuff…yeah, “stuff”, today’s euphemism…then you would think with all the funding available to this White House they’d be able to find at least one competent college grad facile with pencil and paper to write speeches for him. Lot’s of OWS types in DC with advanced degrees in English…they could use the bread.

The man simply cannot put a succession of coherent words together in any sort of meaningful order without botching it up…unless he is focused like a laser on TOTUS…and even then…

I am less than impressed by his “brilliance.”
