Quotes of the day

posted at 8:01 pm on July 20, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

An eager audience forgoing sleep to take in the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises” instead were witnesses Friday to a bloody mass shooting at a suburban Denver movie theater. Police said a man clad in black threw a canister that spewed smoke before he opened fire. Witnesses said that at first, they thought it was a prank or a stunt. Then the gunman shot steadily at the audience, not speaking.

***

The man suspected in the mass shooting at an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater screening of the new Batman film early Friday had colored his hair red and told police he was “the Joker,” according to a federal law enforcement source with detailed knowledge of the investigation.

At least 12 people were killed in the rampage and 59 were wounded.

…Witnesses to the shooting described him as wearing a gas mask that concealed much of his face and head. But the federal law enforcement source’s information about the suspect’s appearance fits with a statement from New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly, who was briefed by Colorado authorities Friday. …

Police say Holmes, 24, dressed head-to-toe in protective tactical gear, set off two devices of some kind before spraying the theater with bullets from an AR-15 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and at least one of two .40-caliber handguns police recovered at the scene.

***

Jordan told the paper that one girl was struck in cheek, others in stomach including a girl who looked to be around 9-years-old. …

“Like little explosions going on and shortly after that we heard people screaming,” he told the station. …

The youngest victim reported was a 6-year-old being treated at Children’s Hospital Colorado, where a total of six victims were taken. Their condition wasn’t known.

***

Now, even as we learn how this happened and who’s responsible, we may never understand what leads anybody to terrorize their fellow human beings like this. Such violence, such evil is senseless. It’s beyond reason. But while we will never know fully what causes somebody to take the life of another, we do know what makes life worth living. The people we lost in Aurora loved, and they were loved. They were mothers and fathers; they were husbands and wives; sisters and brothers; sons and daughters, friends and neighbors. They had hopes for the future, and they had dreams that were not yet fulfilled.

And if there’s anything to take away from this tragedy, it’s the reminder that life is very fragile. Our time here is limited, and it is precious. And what matters at the end of the day is not the small things, it’s not the trivial things, which so often consume us and our daily lives. Ultimately, it’s how we choose to treat one another and how we love one another.

***

“Our hearts break with the sadness of this unspeakable tragedy,” Romney said, according to a rush transcript. “Ann and I join the president and first lady and all Americans in offering our deepest condolences for those whose lives were shattered in a few moments, a few moments of evil, in Colorado. I stand before you today not as a man running for office but as a father and grandfather, a husband, an American. This is a time for each of us to look into our hearts and remember how much we love one another and how much we love and how much we care for our great country. There’s so much love and goodness in the heart of America.”

***

The telegenic schoolmarms we call pundits are all denouncing the politicization of the tragedy in Aurora, calling out the crass opportunists who would dare to use human suffering to advance their preferred public policy choices. I feel terrible about what happened in that movie theater, and I’m agnostic about gun control, but there is nothing wrong with politicizing tragedy.

The talking heads don’t like it, because they think of politics as a silly game about who sang out of tune and whose words can be used against them and whose surrogate undercut whose message, but politics is about life and death and human suffering. At least that’s what it should be about. …

…But politics matters, because policies matter. “Obamacare” and “gay marriage” are not just issues that might play badly with swing voters or turn the tide in Virginia; they’re issues that affect people’s lives. Gun control and the Second Amendment are issues, too, and now seems like a pretty good time to talk about them.

***

***

“Soothing words are nice,” Bloomberg said during a regularly scheduled appearance on WOR 710 AM in New York. “But maybe it’s time the two people who want to be president of the United States stand up and tell us what they’re going to do about it, because this is obviously a problem across the country. And everybody always says, ‘Isn’t it tragic?’”

“I mean, there’s so many murders with guns every day,” Bloomberg continued. “It’s just gotta stop. And instead of these two people, President [Barack] Obama and Governor [Mitt] Romney talking in broad things about, they want to make the world a better place. OK, tell us how. And this is a problem. No matter where you stand on the Second Amendment, no matter where you stand on guns, we have a right to hear from both of them, concretely, not just in generalities, specifically, what are they going to do about guns?”

***

The only fitting response to a terrible crime like this is silence or prayer. The idea that acts of mass murder reflect Hollywood violence is absurd; you can’t get more violent than King Lear. It’s true that guns are more convenient than hatchets as mass-murder weapons; they are also more convenient for self-defense. Defense and attack are generally on par in the long blood-stain of human history, and this is the wrong moment for political agitation for or against gun control. (If such laws really did “control” guns it might be different. But as matters stand, if we outlaw guns, we had better outlaw crime also.) A whole generation has been reared, in many parts of society, without the moral compass of biblical religion. Does that make any difference to the rate of violent crime? I don’t know and, again, this is the wrong moment to argue about it. In human life, savagery is a given. God knows we all wish it weren’t.

Oh how I hope the leftists and their lapdogs in the media keep pushing the gun control narrative – all the way to November.

By standing up against tyranny in any form we Americans are speaking to our own Federal Government that tyranny will not be stood for. The Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution is pure and simple; armed people can secure and maintain their freedom. This is not the only reason why liberals carry guns there are five more reasons that come to mind and without further ado please have a look at them. LIBERALS With Guns

When it comes to discussing the Second Amendment, liberals check at the door their ability to think rationally. In discussing the importance of any other portion of the Bill of Rights, liberals can quote legal precedent, news reports, and exhaustive studies. They can talk about the intentions of the Founding Fathers.

And they will, almost without exception, conclude the necessity of respecting, and not restricting, civil liberties.

So why do liberals have such a problem with the Second Amendment? Why do they lump all gun owners in the category of “gun nuts”? Why do they complain about the “radical extremist agenda of the NRA”? Why do they argue for greater restrictions?

Why do they start performing mental gymnastics worthy of a position in Bush’s Department of Justice to rationalize what they consider “reasonable” infringement of one of our most basic, fundamental, and revolutionary — that’s right, revolutionary — civil liberties?

Why do they pursue these policies at the risk of alienating voters who might otherwise vote Democrat? Why are they so dismissive of approximately 40% of American households that own one or more guns?

And why is their approach to the Second Amendment so different from their approach to all the others?

Well, if conversations on this blog about the issue of guns are in any way indicative of the way other liberals feel, maybe this stems from a basic misunderstanding.

So, allow me to attempt to explain the Second Amendment in a way that liberals should be able to endorse.

Daily Kos: Why LIBERALS Should Love The Second Amendment

In Defense of the 2nd Amendment

The Individual-Rights model, which is based on the facts surrounding the creation of the constitution of the United States as created by the people of the United States (Founding Fathers), who in turn put their trust in the citizens-militia to protect the Republic from not only foreign enemies but from the several states themselves, is the only correct “interpretation.”
The Constitution IS NOT in a foreign language, nor is it in the often times deceptive legalese of modern-law. It was written plainly, so that all citizens would understand its meaning without question or need of a legal interpreter.
The amendment makes clear WHO comprises the militia, and THAT the people have the right to arms for the purpose of maintaining the security of a FREE as opposed to TYRANNICAL state.

From Power Line

Today, we saw this sad trend reach new heights when Brian Ross of ABC News attempted to tie the killings in Colorado to the Tea Party, incorrectly suggesting that the killer is a Tea Party activist. It’s difficult to believe that Ross did this in good faith, considering his apparent unwillingness, and that of his network, to recognize that the name of the killer, James Holmes, is quite common. In any case, the error would not have occurred had Ross not correctly perceived that there exists a mass audience hoping to be informed that the murderer was connected to the Tea Party. Absent such an audience, the story would have been duly fact checked.

*Methamphetamine-induced hyperstimulation of pleasure pathways can lead to anhedonia months after use has been discontinued.

*Methamphetamine users and addicts may lose their teeth abnormally quickly, a condition informally known as meth mouth.

My friend, decades and another life distant, sat on the tailgate of my truck and went blind for ten minutes. That’s not the thing that made me think “nope.” The thing that made me think “nope” was that he didn’t care. He couldn’t see for a while, and giggled around in the dark.

Can’t forget that. :)

F that stuff, man. Just sayin’.

Colorado tea partier describes ‘surreal’ day of wrongly being linked to theater massacre

“What kind of idiot makes that kind of statement?” Holmes told TheDC. “Really, seriously, how do we take a journalist seriously when it’s pretty clear they really haven’t done any sort of check on their facts?”

[snip]

Holmes told TheDC that ABC News didn’t call him before going to air and he still hasn’t heard from them or received a direct apology. “No, not a thing,” he said.

Flora Duh on July 21, 2012 at 12:21 AM

Holmes on a dating website; Drudge has a link. Picture looks like him. Can’t post it because there’s a bad word in the URL.

slickwillie2001 on July 21, 2012 at 12:22 AM

Had a conversation with one of my liberal 20-something salesgirls about the Aurora shooting today. She knows I am a CCW holder and have an extensive collection of firearms, and that I’m always carrying.

She wanted to know what I thought about the shooting and found a way to bring the topic up in our conversation. I told her that the reason so many died was that because the theater prohibited weapons, nobody was able to defend themselves. It wouldn’t have mattered if the guy was wielding knives or anything else if people weren’t allowed to carry weapons to defend themselves – a lot of defenseless people would have died. I could see she was somewhat stunned by this, and I let her stew in her silence for a few moments. I then told her that had I been there, I could probably have saved a lot of lives in there by drawing my weapon and taking him out myself.

Her expression, and even her posture suddenly changed, and she looked me in the eye and said, “You know, maybe I should get a gun.” And I told her, she absolutely should.

Amphetamine doesn’t do any of that to me.

Why amphetamines work for ADHD.

ADD is under the umbrella of ADHD. I don’t have the hyperactivity.

No responsible journalist (are there any left?) would have made such a statement publically about anyone unless they’d doublechecked the facts. Mr. Holmes should sue because the media could care less about complaints.

The Blog and the Ban
********************

As an inscription on the Peace Arch marking the international boundary between Canada and the United States in Blaine, Washington, proclaims, the two nations are “Children of a Common Mother,” with similar legal systems derived from English common law. The U.S. Bill of Rights and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms both guarantee freedom of the press, as well as the right to a fair trial.

But Canadian judges can’t count on the non-mainstream media to be quite so respectful.

In April, in what one Canadian writer called the “clash of the blog and the ban,” Ed Morrissey, the Minnesota-based publisher of a Weblog called Captain’s Quarters,

decided to publish details of an investigation into a corruption scandal known as “Adscam.”

The hearings in Montreal involve allegations that former Prime Minister Jean Chretien and his Liberal Party siphoned off funds earmarked to persuade Quebec separatists not to break away from Canada, a scandal which some predict could bring down the current government.

But despite the ban, someone continued to funnel the hearing testimony to Morrissey.

Denied the information by their own media, intrepid Canadians flocked to his Web site.

The Christian Science Monitor reported that one Canadian blogger linked to Captain’s Quarters, saying

that he didn’t want his children to grow up in a country “where public testimony can be known by government officials

and by the media, but by no one else.”

On April 7, Gomery lifted most of the publication ban. Although his order makes no reference to it,

surely Morrissey’s blog and the public reaction to it were factors in his decision.

But having had a taste of freedom of information,

it seems unlikely that the Canadian people

will tolerate being treated like children any longer

Liberals love arguing, it validates them. But when they face so much ridicule or are otherwise disregarded, they freak. Then thney seek out other places to annoy.

…Got to be real easy to be a liberal….results don’t matter….facts don’t matter….reality doesn’t matter…

You can just make sh!t up…run with it…..then the next day…take the total opposite position…..then declare yourself “the winner and intellectual superior”…….

Jim Jones followers perfected this and we see it in Obama’s followers right now.
…..so just keep saying it …over…and over…and over….and over…and it will be true.
