Details about Colorado shooter emerge as ABC apologizes for false Tea Party reporting Update: 71 shot Update: Obama and Romney video added

posted at 2:05 pm on July 20, 2012 by Mary Katharine Ham

The last post was getting heavy with updates and comments, so here’s a new thread to deal with what, unfortunately, is an inevitable part of every major national tragedy these days— the political scapegoating, usually of the Tea Party.

But first, we have some more information about the alleged shooter, James Holmes, 24. This is reportedly a photo of the suspect:

Aurora theater shooter James Holmes
The AP reported that The University of Colorado Medical School said Holmes had withdrawn from school there, but did not know why. He may have been pursuing a Ph.D. in neuropsychology until recently. Other reports state that Holmes’ apartment, which police searched, was booby-trapped with explosives and flammable material.

Meanwhile, ABC’s Brian Ross was focused this morning, not on the man who perpetrated the shooting, but on the first Jim Holmes he could find in the Denver area with a Tea Party connection. His reporting is so bad as to suggest he simply Googled “Jim Holmes + Tea Party + Denver,” and George Stephanopoulos accepted his report credulously. Nate Silver, a statistics specialist who writes on politics at the New York Times, estimated there are may be 25 Jim Holmeses in the Denver area.

Here’s the original report, via Mediaite:

Later, ABC News included a clarification of sorts buried in this online story, but flagged by Dylan Byers. The original clarification, without an apology, has since been moved to the top of the story and turned into an apology:

Editor’s Note: An earlier ABC News broadcast report suggested that a Jim Holmes of a Colorado Tea Party organization might be the suspect, but that report was incorrect. ABC News and Brian Ross apologize for the mistake, and for disseminating that information before it was properly vetted.

Stephanopoulos and Ross owe an on-air apology to the Mr. Jim Holmes they smeared and the Colorado Tea Party, and Ross should be disciplined or fired (I’m sure we could have a whole thread for that discussion). The Jim Holmes they referenced is a 52-year-old man understandably shaken by the unwarranted national attention.

“It was freaky,” said Holmes, describing his reaction when ABC News speculated that he was the culprit who entered a crowded theater and opened fire on dozens of innocent men, women, and children. He disconnected his telephone and says that he is worried about members of his family who might be contacted by the media.

Regina Thompson, of the Colorado Tea Party Patriots:

Regina Thomson, the president of the Colorado Tea Party Patriots, said in a statement, “The member of the Colorado Tea Party Patriots, Jim Holmes, age 52 is not the same person who has been identified as the shooter.”

“The attempts of some media organizations to characterize the shooter as a Tea Party member without having made any effort to contact our organization are shameless and reprehensible,” she said.

Matt Welch of Reason is doing the work that, sadly, must be done— tracking “half-assed media speculation.” (Including, unfortunately, Republican Rep. Louis Gohmert’s dumb speculation about “attacks on Judeo-Christian values” as a possible root.)

There’s not much verified information on many of the victims, yet, and won’t be for a little while, as relatives are notified. But I loathe giving the alleged shooters so much press in these stories without touching on the victims, so I’ll give you what we have— the story of Jessica Ghawi, an aspiring sportscaster who narrowly missed a mall shooting in Toronto last month only to be killed in a theater in Aurora:

Ghawi, who wrote under the name Jessica Redfield, worked for sports website Busted Coverage and a now-poignant final post on her personal blog describes her near miss at the Eaton Center mall shooting in Toronto June 2 — where seven were injured and one died.

“I can’t get this odd feeling out of my chest. This empty, almost sickening feeling won’t go away,” Ghawi wrote. “I noticed this feeling when I was in the Eaton Center in Toronto just seconds before someone opened fire in the food court.

Read her whole blog post, here.

As I said in the previous post, I hope she lived the hell out of life from June to July. Her Twitter description suggests she’s the kind of woman who didn’t have any problem with that: “You can find me in the TV studio, NHL arena/ locker room, on a plane, or writing. Southern. Sarcastic. Sass.Class.Crass. Grammar snob.” A woman after my own heart. God bless her and her family and friends, and all the rest we don’t know yet.

Jessica Ghawi

Update: Police in Colorado say the number of people shot in an Aurora theater is up to 71:

“There were bullet (casings) just falling on my head. They were burning my forehead,” Jennifer Seeger said, adding that the gunman, dressed like a SWAT team member, fired steadily except when he stopped to reload.
“Every few seconds it was just: Boom, boom, boom,” she said. “He would reload and shoot and anyone who would try to leave would just get killed.”

The alleged shooter had an assault rifle, a shotgun, and two pistols, according to police.

Update: Police radio audio of response to the massacre, via Fox News.

Update: Obama and Romney respond.

This video of Obama is not embeddable, but I’ll look for one that is.

Mr. Obama called the shooting “senseless” and “beyond reason,” adding, “We may never understand what leads anybody to terrorize their fellow human beings… If there’s anything to take away from this tragedy it’s the reminder that life is very fragile… Our time here is limited and it is precious.”

“I stand before you today not as a man running for office, but as a father, a grandfather, a husband — an American…our hearts break for the victims and their families. We pray that the wounded will recover, and we pray that those who are grieving will know the nearness of God….What we do know is how evil is overcome, and we’re seeing that greater power today, in the goodness and compassion of a wounded community.”

Update: Flags will be at half-staff until Wednesday.

Update: Four armed service members among those shot, but not killed: “Buckley Air Force Base is in Aurora, and defense officials told NBC News that two Air Force reservists and two Navy service members were among those shot.”

Update: Gabby Giffords and husband Mark Kelly respond to shooting via Twitter.

Update: The gun-control talk begins at the White House. To be fair, this is boilerplate, with no indication of action they’d like to take, and going after guns in an election year won’t serve them well in swing-state Colorado, no matter what James Holmes did. Via Daily Caller‘s Jeff Poor, Michael Bloomberg has been booked for Sunday’s “Face the Nation.” I bet he ain’t talking trans fats.

Too, this killer was not wanting a gun fight, he laid down for the police. If he had a gun fight in mind, he would have taken on the few who jumped him first.

Just a back shooting coward punk.

Still early, but they are reporting Eagan as his middle name, not William/Willie.

James Eagan Holmes held in Colorado shooting

sharrukin on July 20, 2012 at 4:58 PM

They think there is a photo of him used in the video being carried away by police at 16 seconds into the video.

But if that was him it would have turned up in an arrest record IWT. It’s been reported that he only had a traffic citation in 2011. If he had been arrested at an OWS rally, I think it would be showing up.

You are confusing the AR-15/M16 dichotomy with the AK47. Most AK47s are former-full autos that have been deseared and converted to meet batf regulations. They are NOT expensive and the Romanian ones are incredibly cheap. They are still AK47s! Whereas an AR15 is a gun manufactured as semi-auto. It is not a military surplus M16 that has been converted. Do not call me an ignoramous.

Daikokuco on July 20, 2012 at 5:07 PM

You’re correct about the AR-15 (as it was explained to me, several years ago), but AR-15s can be “converted” to full-auto.

I’m sure the report you cited is accurate, but the MSM is wholly in question to me every time one of these horrid incidents occur.

Liam on July 20, 2012 at 5:14 PM

Jesus also loves James Holmes (the one who purported the massacre).

listens2glenn on July 20, 2012 at 5:00 PM

Sorry.. Jesus hates him. He’ll send him to hell unless he repents but he’ll still deserve to hang either way.

“Whoever takes a human life shall surely be put to death.” Lev. 24:13

“There are six things that the Lord hates, seven that are an abomination to him: haughty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil, a false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.” Proverbs 6 16-19

“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them.” Math 5:17

Too many people get their Christianity from movies and TV preachers. There is the American Gospel, and then there is the Bible. God hates sin… and yes.. he hates murderers! He doesn’t love them! That is a perversion and a lie!

Over 240+ gun related murders this half year alone (2012) in Rahm’s “Progressive Paradise” with the strictest gun ownership laws in the country. Where is the outrage? Why does the “Liberal/Progressive media complex” ignore “Black on Black” crime? Why do liberals/Progressives hate Black people?

sharrukin on July 20, 2012 at 5:18 PM

AR-15 was originally developed by ArmaLite as a full-auto offering for the military. Then they sold the design to Colt, who sold semi-auto AR-15s for civilians. The select-fire/full-auto AR-15 was referred to by the military as the M16.

So the bigot is somewhat right and somewhat wrong. However, he is not correct enough to show the douchebag attitude he has been parading around like a fat kid boasting about a fart.

Last time I’m going to school you. An M16A1, 2 or 3 is a full length rifle. The M4 is a shorter barreled collapsable stock version. They are all automatic with the more recent versions shooting three round bursts when auto is selected. None of which would be called an AR15 and an AR15 would never be referred to as an M4 or M16.

hawkdriver on July 20, 2012 at 5:24 PM

No, he really isn’t. No one I know who shoots claims they have either an M4 or an M16. It is an AR15.

That’s what exactly what I’m saying about the AR-15, jackass. No one calls it an M16. That’s what the guy was confusing AK47s with. Its AR-15s and M16s that you keep distinct.

Just like no one would claim they have an AK47 unless they’re licensed to have a full automatic.

hawkdriver on July 20, 2012 at 5:18 PM

And this is where your full of crap. Most people call their AK47 an AK47, if it is one. If its and AKM they’ll call it that. AKMs are also found in both semi and FA. If its an AK74…they’ll call it that. But the idea that AK47s are FA only is wrong!

Thats what I recall and didn’t Armalite have an AR-10 in 7.62mm as well which they also tried to sell to the army? They sold some of them to Nicaragua or El Salvador in the late 70′s IIRC.

An AR15 is not an M16.

An AK47 can either be semi-only, OR it can be FA.

Daikokuco on July 20, 2012 at 5:16 PM

Here is his problem: he claims that because the military only uses full-auto M16s, and that AR-15 is the official trademarked name(nothing to do with the function) of a particular type of semi-auto civilian assault rifle, that to conflate the names is wrong.

…except that the M16 is, in fact, an AR-15. It’s the original AR-15. He’s saying that one should be strict with those labels because of how they are now manufactured, rather than referring to history of which he is clearly ignorant.

He goes on to completely fail to apply that logic to the AK-47, which, to my knowledge, has never been produced for a civilian market, and hence there are “only” FA AK-47s, and those whose sears have been disabled.

He’s an idiot, a coward, a bigot, and an a**hole.

Sorry.. Jesus hates him. He’ll send him to hell unless he repents but he’ll still deserve to hang either way.

Oh… I’m going to quote myself here to correct something. Don’t think if a murderer or anyone for that matter can just turn to Jesus and receive mercy. Again.. that is a perversion of the Bible! God is not some fool. He doesn’t have to grant anyone mercy. Charles Finney said he has sat at the bedside of several slave owners who were cruel and mean and lived their lives knowing the Gospel but rejecting it. Waiting until they had nothing left of their lives to give to God. He said they cried out for mercy but could tell they never received it and died in their sin.

O, if I could only tell you some of the death-bed scenes which I have witnessed–if I could make you see them, and hear the deep wailings of unutterable agony as the soul quivered, shuddered, and fain would shrink away into annihilation from the awful eye–and was swept down swift to hell! Those are the very men who ran away from mercy! Mercy could not reach them, but death can. Death seizes its victim. See, he drags the frightened shrieking soul to the gate-way of hell; how that soul recoils–groans–what an unearthly groan–and he is gone! The sentence of execution has gone out and there is no reprieve. That sinner would not have mercy when he might; now he cannot when he would. All is over now.

Not by us…it is one of the sins that cannot be forgiven.

You have to ask the person which you sinned against for forgiveness, correct? And that person than, through the grace of God, my grant forgiveness.
However, since you killed that person, you can’t ask them, can you?

That is why the foolish statement by pastors/preachers of saying “they forgive a murderer”, is just them trying to feel good.
The only people who can forgive this guy, are the ones he killed…and he has to die to face them. Hence, the death penalty allows him the chance to be forgiven.

The AR-15 was based on the AR-10, but was lighter and designed for 5.56 rather than 7.62. The key thing is that, no matter how you slice it, an M16 is an AR-15 as originally designed and intended. It was Colt that initially made them available as semi-auto. The name is nothing more than a trademark.

MadisonConservative on July 20, 2012 at 5:29 PM

There was music playing

Psycho Strings: On the soundtrack the Joker’s one-note theme is made mostly of these. (One note? You have to listen to it to understand.)
The theme’s feel could be compared to a swarm of wasps from hell trapped inside your brain and buzzing around for an exit. Or the screeching drone of an oncoming train. It still wouldn’t do it justice.
Hint: Listen to it with headphones or surround-sound.

Update at 3:40 p.m. ET. At Holmes’ Apartment, Booby Traps And A Song Playing Over And Over:

“Police found Holmes’ north Aurora apartment booby-trapped, the same song playing on repeat on his stereo,” The Denver Post reports. Neighbors, The Wall Street Journal writes, “said electronic music suddenly started blaring shortly after midnight from Mr. Holmes’s apartment, at the top floor of an old, red-brick building.”

So many of them are such idiots.

Dan_Yul on July 20, 2012 at 4:49 PM

Why should Christians feel defensive? Even if this guy attended church every day, it clearly was not Christianity that inspired his murderous acts, since these acts violate core Christian beliefs. The shooter was also a male, and a grad student, and a neuroscientist. Should males and grad students and neuroscientists also feel defensive about the shootings, since the shooter identifies with those groups too? Should Batman fans feel defensive, or how about people with dyed red hair? Those things had as much causal connection with the shootings as Christianity did.

As for whether the shooter “clearly” thought he could shoot dozens of people “and still get to heaven,” who knows what went on in his troubled mind?

The only thing that is “clear” here is that people who use this horrible incident as an excuse to mock others’ religious faith have some pretty serious problems of their own.

There is no scripture that supports the premise that a sinner/trespasser must seek forgiveness from those he/she has trespassed against, before seeking forgiveness from the Lord.
