Obama fundraising with “ruthless” off-shorer in Austin?

posted at 10:01 am on July 19, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Picture this.  Barack Obama delivers a big speech in Austin, Texas, one of the few hospitable venues for Democrats in the deeply red state, slamming Mitt Romney for “outsourcing” as a private-sector executive, when he really means off-shoring:

In a speech to about 1,300 people at the Austin Music Hall, Obama recited the accomplishments of his first term: ending “don’t ask, don’t tell,” which required gays in the military to keep their sexuality a secret; killing terrorist Osama bin Laden; changing immigration policy to allow children of undocumented immigrants who were born elsewhere to stay in the U.S. legally; and passing the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act.

He also compared himself with challenger Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee. Obama talked about Romney’s support of “top-down economics,” saying that Romney’s “theory” of tax breaks for the wealthy hasn’t worked.

“I believe in bottom-up economics,” Obama said, adding that he would like to make sure anyone earning $250,000 a year or less wouldn’t see their taxes rise “one dime.” Obama said Romney, onetime CEO of a private equity firm, made a lot of money by outsourcing talent to other countries.

The President then heads over to a big $25,000-a-plate fundraiser hosted by a captain of the computer industry, former Dell executive Tom Meredith.  Maybe Obama thought rubbing shoulders with a real Texas businessman would burnish his bottom-up credentials, but if so, BuzzFeed has a buzz-kill piece of information for Team Obama:

After giving a speech in Austin, Texas in which he decried Mitt Romney for overseeing companies that outsourced jobs, President Obama attended a fundraiser hosted by Tom Meredith, a former Dell executive who once oversaw outsourcing at his own company — and said he would be “ruthless” about cutting costs.

In 2001, while serving as senior vice president of Dell Computer Corp, Meredith defended plans to lay off between 3,000 and 4,000 employees — largely in Texas — while sparing about 4,000 jobs in Asia Pacific. When that strategy was reported by the tech press at the time Meredith defended the move.

“We will be ruthless in how we address our cost structure,” Meredith said, a comment that drew wide attention at the time.

Meredith has off-shored 4,000 more jobs than Mitt Romney ever did in the private sector. Apparently, Obama has no problem with off-shorers when they stick money in his pockets.

Seriously, does the Obama campaign bother to vet their fundraisers at all?

Seriously, does the Obama campaign bother to vet their fundraisers at all?

Why,…..NO.

Of course, the lapdog media won’t report this.

Seriously, does the Obama campaign bother to vet their fundraisers at all?

Sure they do. But the criterion they use is simply this: will this fundraiser bring in the big bucks? They don’t care about anything else.

Seriously, does the Obama campaign bother to vet their fundraisers at all?

Why would they have to? It’s not like the MSM is going to report it or anything.

Sure, we can, and will, continue to report on his hypocracy, but it still isn’t reaching most Americans.

To alter an inspirational quote to make it more modern (and depressing): “It’s amazing what you can accomplish when you don’t have to worry about being called out on it.”

Simple, Obama will continue to create such awful economic conditions in the United States that there will be no chance any American competitor will be able to harm his Turd World offshore operations.

Seriously, does the Obama campaign bother to vet their fundraisers at all?

Based on how the big media handled Obama in 2008, why should they? Barack’s crew is working under the assumption that none of their actions which contradict their words are going to be highlighted by the usual big media outlets, and they’re pretty much right — BuzzFeed may not be a strongly conservative website, but it’s also not part of the big media, which — as with Obama’s Roanoke quote — still believes they have an effective role as gatekeeper, making sure the casual, low intensity voters never hear about that anti-busniess remark or this link between the president and a guy who did the things they’re blasting Mitt Romney for doing even after he left Bain.

Also OT:

That’s the same poll that shows barack’s favorable/unfavorable sliding from 50/44 in June to 46/48 today. THIS is the number to watch. His unfavorables are cratering in all polls — and that was all he had left in his arsenal. I saw Michael Barone on Fox this morning, and he said “100% of voters know this president, and 54% won’t vote for him in 2012. That’s where he is.”

Ouch!

He is confident that lies and prevarications will work.

righto. When you have no standards, you can’t be held to any. Well, the only standard in play here is that Texas Tom had a fat $ wallet and so did his Keep Austin Weird friends.

When it comes to funding for Obama (FOO), it’s “anchors aweigh” for his off-shoring supporters.

BTW The only “bottoms up” philosophy that I see coming from Obama is the frequent photos of him quaffing beer. (What was it that his physician had said in Obama’s annual health check up?)

“Pretty Good”???

It ruined his golf round, having to be torn from the 18th hole to flip the coin for the “go-no go decision”. (Recall that the ‘gutsy’ part of the decision was tempered by the memo ‘covering’ the POTUS in the event anything went wrong)

jon1979 on July 19, 2012 at 10:13 AM

Bingo Jon. It is without doubt that a complicit media has made it possible for the Obama camp to totally disregard the hypocrisy in messaging.
But the good news is, the messaging is so out of sync they are beginning to look like fools, or rather, the public at large is beginning to see the foolishness, and it’s not helping them. One bit. As Ed pointed out last week, the megabucks and non-stop attacks have had little or no effect. In fact, I think this ends up a positive for Romney, as the average voter (read that low information voter) will be tuning out the attacks more and more. Romney has the advantage of being able to go positive and make it sound reasonable. Bambi has no choice but to try and discredit Mitt. By November, I believe a big chunk of voters will be more inclined to respond to some REAL hope, as opposed to the total BS we have been hearing for 4 years now.

Guess who was making the decisions about GST Steel in 2001 while Mitt was running the Olympics?

Jonathan Lavine

Guess who was making decisions about outsourcing jobs from Sensata Technologies in 2011 — long after Romney left Bain?

Jonathan Lavine

Who is Jonathan Lavine?

He is the Managing Director & Chief Investment Officer of Bain Capital, Inc.

Do you know who else Jonathan Lavine is?

He is one of Obama’s top campaign financiers and bundlers. He has raised more that $200,000 in contributions for the 2012 Obama Victory Fund, according to estimates released by the Obama campaign.

I think that this race will end up a lot like 1980′s race. Romney and Obama will remain close until mid-October, when people come face to face with having to cast a vote. At that point, Obama’s numbers will quit sliding and start actually falling off a cliff.

Barack-Oh says that

… he would like to make sure anyone earning $250,000 a year or less wouldn’t see their taxes rise ‘one dime.’

He should add “for the next 12 months” at which time if he is reelected, we will go through this dog and pony show again. The only limit to taxation by liberals like Obama is 100% of your income, and once that limit is reached, he’ll go after your pension and an annual federal surtax on your assets. Please send this turkey back to Chicago.

stefano1 on July 19, 2012 at 12:11 PM

Its not whether the Obama campaign vets these fundraisers….its that they are cynical enough to believe that their base WON’T and that that same base won’t pay attention to those who DO vet the fundraisers.

One of the great consistencies that has emerged with the Obama campaign.. and this administration in general…is their firm conviction that the American public is stupid.

Obama said so in his ‘..you didn’t do that on your own.’ speech, Chris Matthews just advised his ‘perfect’ president to address the nation as if he was speaking to a two year old. Obama has remarked that he believed that ‘most people aren’t paying attention.. and they won’t be until the convention.’ Both Jarrett and Axelrod have said much the same thing repeatedly.

The deep seated disdain and derision that is being exhibited by this president, his administration, and the Obama campaign for the American people is echoed openly by the president’s celebrity supporters like Bill Maher and Alec Baldwin, spanning the various media forms, without equivocation.

Although people monitor the various news outlets to varying degrees, certainly, the majority of adults try to keep abreast of current events, including politics, because its in their best interest. Economic pain and uncertainty spur people to become better informed.

I look forward to seeing how many people have been paying attention in November. I believe that the Obama campaign and their friends are in for a rude awakening.

Remember the tale of the Tortoise & the Hare? This is how the Democrats act. They know the MSM is in their back pocket, so they think they can get away with ANYTHING.

Forget about the MSM going after the Democrats the way they go afer Republicans. That wouldn’t be right either. But imagine a truly fair and balanced MSM, and then imagine what kind of results the Democrats would be getting when people went to the polls to vote.

It would force the Democrats to permanently put the likes of the Clintons, Liebermans, Jim Webbs, etc, in charge, while relegating the Obamas, Pelosis, Patty Murrays, etc, to the basement.

There’s very little that Dell manufactures in the US these days. The laptops have been made overseas for years (by subcons), but at least they were still still building desktops here, in plants in Round Rock and Pflugerville (around Austin), and in North Carolina. Not anymore. Now the desktops are assembled in Mexico, and about the only thing left here in the US are servers.
