Ah, I see. I didn’t realize that the issue even involves whom organizations serve, as well as whom they employ.

I’m a bit confused here. Why would they have to ask the people they serve if they’re Catholic? I read the Monsignor’s piece, but I’m still unclear.

As I understand it, in order to qualify for the narrow religious exemption, the organization has to (1) employ only members of their own faith, and (2) serve only members of their own faith. So Catholic Charities would have to turn away all of the poor non-Catholics who showed up at their door for help.

It has to do with the argument over what’s considered a religious institution for the purposes of That One’s mandates/whims. If the organization ONLY employed Catholics and ONLY served Catholics, then it would qualify as a religious institution and be exempt from That One’s mandate. But if they serve non-Catholics (and they do), then somehow they’re no longer a religious organization.

As all of us know, Catholic Charities serves the poor because we are a Catholic organization, not because our clients are Catholic. We strongly believe at Catholic Charities that we witness our faith by our service to the poor. We ask only, “Are you hungry?” “Do you need clothing?” or “Are you homeless?” Under the HHS mandate, to be a “religious employer” we would now have to ask, “Are you Catholic?”

Evidently he’s taken that to heart in a truly narcissistic fashion. Since his worshipers (Tingles Matthews comes to mind) consider The Chosen One is “perfection”; Barry obviously believes he is a deity unto himself, and therefore a proper judge of religious doctrine.

Will we pay more? Why is it that we don’t know if the date is August? I require a few months notice to make any changes.

This mandate is not just a Catholic issue — it threatens people of all faiths.

Exactly! Just wait til they pass a law that says all churches must perform homosexual weddings. Or other crap like that.

Under the HHS mandate, we are punished for both employing and reaching out to serve non-Catholics, which is an injustice.

That is the most powerful argument against the mandate. Opponents should use this quote and/or emphasize this point in debates and ads.

I note the strong silence about this attack on the most fundamental of all liberties coming from the so-called conservative right. Oh well. The Church has been through this before and it will gird its loins and survive. How frail liberty is when men of good will stay silent.
