Pelosi: House Democrats should skip the national convention

posted at 2:41 pm on July 18, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

First, the good news, at least for House Democrats.  Instead of running for the lifeboats to escape the debacle unfolding in Charlotte in the next few weeks, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi has announced an official “abandon ship“:

House minority leader Nancy Pelosi says that Democratic members should stay home and campaign in their districts rather than go to the party’s national convention in North Carolina.

“I’m not encouraging anyone to go to the convention, having nothing to do with anything except I think they should stay home, campaign in their districts, use their financial and political resources to help them win their election,” Pelosi said in an exclusive interview for POLITICO Live’s On Congress, a new weekly show to be streamed live on POLITICO’s website and broadcast on NewsChannel 8 on Wednesdays. …

“We nominated a president last time. We have an incumbent President of the United States. We’re very proud of him. There certainly will be enough people there to express that pride, but I’m not encouraging members to go to the convention no matter what the situation was, because they can be home. It’s campaign time. It’s the first week in September,” she said.

Maybe the DNC should have scheduled it for mid-August instead, then?  That’s one of the more minor problems with the Democratic convention — after a lack of funding, the outrage of Big Labor for holding it in a right-to-work state, and the use of Bank of America Stadium by a party that spent the last four years demonizing the banking industry, it falls well down the list.  It’s still worth discussing, though; why did Democrats schedule their convention on a week when the pressure to be home campaigning would be strongest?  Apparently it came from a game of chicken played with the GOP to get the last word in conventions, but maybe both parties should rethink the late-season staging of these affairs.

And now the better news, for everyone:

In addition, Pelosi also wouldn’t commit to serving in the leadership of the 113th Congress.

“I wouldn’t assume anything,” she told POLITICO editor in chief John Harris and reporter Lois Romano. “I would just assume that Democrats would win and we would stop the obstruction of the President’s agenda. I think it’s fair to say that most people don’t have the faintest idea about leadership races in the Congress.”

The bigger question is why Pelosi remained in leadership in the 112th Congress.  Speakers who get turned out by the opposition generally resign so new leadership can give their caucus and party a fresh start.  Instead, Pelosi has clung to power while her caucus more or less admits that they don’t have any other options than the leadership that led them into a historical drubbing, the worst midterm performance in over 70 years.  If the Democratic Party is to revamp its message from the one that got soundly trounced in 2010, they have to change the leadership first.  It might take another drubbing for that lesson to sink into the Democratic caucus in the House.

Meanwhile, don’t accuse Bill Whittle of not trying to help.  In his Firewall this week, Bill tries to stoke some enthusiasm for the Democratic convention and the formal renomination of President Hope and Change.  Can he do it?

Er … no, not really.

Is it “Bank of America Stadium” or is it “Panthers Field” like the DNC wants you to call it.

Try to find “Panthers Field” on Google Maps. For some reason you get pointed to Bank of America Stadium. Bad Google.

They’re going to have to take a “Spinal Tap” approach to the convention, erect pint-sized Grecian columns and have midgets dancing around them to make everything around seem larger.

Bishop on July 18, 2012 at 3:19 PM

wildcat72 on July 18, 2012 at 3:04 PM

Here’s an even better idea: They should just cancel the whole convention! As Peloadsi pointed out:

We nominated a president last time. We have an incumbent President of the United States.

Delegates could just email their ballots and save everyone a lot of hassle. Why I doubt that anyone could possibly get more enthusiastic than they are right now, anyway. Right? Right?

JPeterman on July 18, 2012 at 3:18 PM

Nahh, they’ll have it, but what they may do is show up to the Republican convention, infiltrate it with Occutards, have them all yell “SQUIRREL!!” at the same time they set off the fire alarm, clear the place out, rush Hussein and his TOTUS to the stage so he can accept the nomination, then rush out before the fire department gets there.

Pelosi is either drinking heavily, taking illegal drugs, or she’s lost her mind.

She suffers of Hammer Withdrawal, badly.

Schadenfreude on July 18, 2012 at 2:47 PM

I have no problem returning the Hammer to her, at least temporarily. All she needs is to should assume the position and spread her wrinkled cheeks. I’m sure Speaker Boehner will gladly donate the gavel for the procedure.

Archivarix on July 18, 2012 at 3:21 PM

The good thing is that the DNC comes AFTER the RNC. So any bounce will fade off and Obama’s speech will be fresher in the voter’s mind.

Not to mention that they can refute all the lies told during the GOP convention on every channel on tv, while the GOP won’t have that advantage.

inthemiddle on July 18, 2012 at 2:54 PM

This is true. The Democrats love the fact that they can spend their convention commenting on Republican ideas from the GOP convention. No need to present ideas at the Democratic Convention, simply just contradict statements from the Republican Convention.

“We don’t have a plan, we just know we don’t like yours.” That’s a long way from “Hope and Change”.

Great tactic, or foolish mistake? I am thinking the public will see right through it.

If Obama’s speech bombs in BoA Stadium and no one is there to hear it, was it really that bad?

Half of the luster of Obama is his screaming supporters cheering during his speeches. People don’t really think about his message, they just see throngs of people cheering his words and assume they must be popular. That will not be the case in NC. With the absence of the worshipping throngs, people watching on tv may actually focus on his rhetoric and find out that they don’t like him.

UnrepentantCurmudgeon on July 18, 2012 at 3:16 PM

According to Wikipedia:

The stadium, originally known as Carolinas Stadium (this name is used when the stadium hosts FIFA events), opened in 1996, as Ericsson Stadium after the Swedish telecom company LM Ericsson purchased the naming rights to the stadium in a ten year, $25 million agreement.[15] In 2004, the stadium received its current name after Bank of America purchased the naming rights for 20 years.[16] Since Bank of America has acquired naming rights, many fans now refer to the stadium as, “The Bank”, “The BOA”, or “BOFA” and most recently “The Vault”.

So we have a stadium now named after a bank and formerly named after a foreign company. Where is the outrage by the Class Warfare crowd?

But Pelosi’s pulling the ejection handle like this says to me Dems have polling showing that this Summer’s DNC tentpole “Hope & Change II, the Wrath of Barack” is a box-office bomb waiting to go off. Vulnerable members who show up to the convention are doomed and Pelosi herself might be the most disliked elected official in the country.

If people are that anxious to dump their Lib congresscritter, it seems unlikely to me that those same voters would skip over the Presidential ballot and pass a chance to de-friend Obama.

OR

“My opponent attended the Democratic National Convention to listen to yet another class warfare speech by President Obama instead of being back home listening to what constituents really want. They may have their quaint reasons they use in their press soundbites as to why they shouldn’t attend — but in reality San Fran Nan and the rest of the clown-car cavalcade of DefeatocRATs don’t want any of their people attending their own convention because they’re scared to death of the “Recreate ’68″ anarchy and mayhem demonstration and protest that is in store for them — and they’re about ready to pee their pants over it.

They think that if they’re not in attendance then the anarchy and mayhem that shall ensue at and during their convention will somehow allow them to disavow any shred of tangible connection to the chaos even though it’s their bread & butter constituents reveling in the destruction. Because, you know, if they’re not actually there when it happens then they must not have anything to do with it whatsoever and they can use their nonattendance as some kind of insulating bulwark when the press writes it up.

It’s all quite conveeeenient.

FlatFoot on July 18, 2012 at 4:49 PM

Enough of this. It’s time to examine a new Democratic Convention question, whether as the party of Energy Conservation the Democrats shouldn’t turn off the air conditioning at their convention.

I am loving this.

The only real disadvantage to the House Dims not showing up is that now Zero could then claim to have reduced Charlotte’s crime rate accordingly by wrecking his convention.

Or, consider the alternative. Barry, all alone with his balloons and festoons, in an empty theater. Without a teleprompter. Nekkid in his superman underoos.

/Orville Reddenbacher didn’t make his popcorn! The DNC did it for him!

Key West Reader on July 18, 2012 at 7:07 PM

whydid Democrats schedule their convention on a week when the pressure to be home campaigning would be strongest?

They wanted to do a pre-victory lap around the Greek columns and party like it was 1984. Then reality hit them upside the head. I think it’s also called projection.

With nothing but his styrofoam Greek column to keep him company.

Even Jimmy Carter had better polls than Obama at this point in his re-election bid in 1980. We know how THAT came out…

That you think Romney is anything close to a Reagan is hilarious. Thanks for the laugh.

That you think O’bama is better than Jimmy Carter is even funnier. Thanks for the material.

But she has the contraception covered for herself for the rest of the year, the secret service guys are paying for it already…so they might as well take that off the charge, when she presents her bill…

Pelosi ” Don’t go to the convention North Carolina is home territory for the The Killer Rabbit of Caerbannog Run away !!!”

stormridercx4 on July 18, 2012 at 7:42 PM

Maybe this is the opening shot to “Sorry folks, we’re cancelling the convention”?????

JPeterman on July 18, 2012 at 3:18 PM

And perhaps, by setting a nice precident, the pre-opening shot to “Sorry folks, we’re canceling the election”.

“Women and children first?”

More like “Every man for himself!!!”

The good thing is that the DNC comes AFTER the RNC. So any bounce will fade off and Obama’s speech will be fresher in the voter’s mind.

Not to mention that they can refute all the lies told during the GOP convention on every channel on tv, while the GOP won’t have that advantage.

Instead, Pelosi has clung to power while her caucus more or less admits that they don’t have any other options than the leadership that led them into a historical drubbing, the worst midterm performance in over 70 years.

In case it hasn’t already been said…she wants that damned plane back.

SKYFOX on July 19, 2012 at 6:56 AM

So who is going to give speeches there? Or is his Awsomeness so awesome that he is going to give three straight days of awesome speeches?

DaveDief on July 18, 2012 at 2:53 PM

Full.On.Hugo.Chavez.

roy_batty on July 19, 2012 at 8:40 AM

Pelosi may definitely be insane, but even she knows that just because they OWN the most corrupt mainstream media in our history, that without their constant propaganda, the dimocrats are toast. To the dimocrats the 2010 election, the biggest reversal in 70 years, will look like the “good ole days”.

San Fran Nan: “Of course it’s constitutional. We never seriously considered that it might not be.”

And two years later Justice Roberts says….?

rwenger43 on July 19, 2012 at 10:01 AM

Will Ms Pelosi be attending the Communist Party USA convention? And is it true that she will present a keynote address?
