Pawlenty: Romney doesn’t need a “flashy” running mate

posted at 8:41 pm on July 18, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

A quick vice-presidential state of play: We’ve heard tips about all sorts of timelines over the past few days (Romney will announce his veep-selection this week; he’ll announce after the Olympics; he won’t announce until after the convention; etcetera). The generally-agreed-upon word on the street is that Tim Pawlenty, Rob Portman, and Bobby Jindal are at the top of the short list, with Chris Christie, Condi Rice, and a few others not too far behind.

Which, of course, has everybody speculating: Is Romney going to go for the safe, perhaps ‘vanilla’ selection of someone like Portman, who has a resume chock-full of experience and could help him politically by bringing home a swing state; or will he choose a more high-risk, high-reward option like Christie, who could potentially fly off the handle but who isn’t afraid to call ‘em as they see ‘em?

Tim Pawlenty appeared on Cavuto this afternoon, in defense of the “dull” option — the American people, he argues, have had enough “flash” with the Celebrity Presidency to last them a lifetime, and what they’re looking for now are real solutions for their very real material problems. (And hey, check that out — he even made a funny!)

“You have been whittled down to what I’m told is a shorter list, apparently because you’re considered, at least by the Romneys, we are told, sir, this could be wrong — safe, reliable, steady as she goes, nothing too flashy. Dare I say dull,” Cavuto said.

“If you goad me into it, I’ll show you my tats,” Pawlenty said.

Cavuto laughed as Pawlenty added, “I’m teasing, I’m teasing.” …

“We have a lot of people who are entertaining, who can light their hair on fire or, you know, do whatever,” Pawlenty said. “But the bottom line is, these are serious times, we need seasoned, experienced people who get the job done.”

“I’m not as flashy as some, but compared to some others, I think I’m right in there,” he added. “Nonetheless, I’m not defending it one way or the other. I’m just saying people — rhetoric and teleprompter and jokes, and you know, that kind of stuff, doesn’t put gas in our cars, it doesn’t pay our mortgages, it doesn’t pay our health insurance premiums. People are hurting.”

I’ll leave you with one very big “hmmmm,” just to keep things interesting — it appears that Tim Pawlenty’s website has been taken down, with just a “please come back later” to greet visitors. Could the website possibly be… under construction for some reason?!?!

I like Pawlenty. I like him for the VP slot a lot.

I’ve said many times that we need prudent, competent, reasonable, efficient, reliable, effective, dedicated, determined, insightful, smart people in the White House and in the next administration.

We sure don’t have them in the White House now or in the current administration.

Pawlenty is absolutely right in his assessment and when he says ‘people are hurting’ he’s reflecting an awareness and empathy at once vital in the new president, vice president, and congress and yet sorely lacking in the current administration and a large portion of the current congess.

Mark1971 on July 18, 2012 at 9:03 PM

How weird is this. In 2002, Mitt Romney won the race for MA governor against Dem. Shannon O’Brien. O’Brien beclowned herself (and might have cost herself the race) during one debate when she asked the moderator, Tim Russert, if he wanted to see her tattoo.

Jim R. on July 18, 2012 at 9:04 PM

Pawlenty couldn’t even inspire any Republican’s to vote for him in the GOP primary. The guy is a total stiff…a dud. If Romney chooses him (or Portman) as VP, he’ll be lucky if anyone even bothers to put up a yard sign, much less actually volunteer.

One boring dud on the ticket is enough. Romney needs a little excitement to stir up the base.

gumbyandpokey on July 18, 2012 at 9:11 PM

Talk about boring, you would fall asleep at the wheel if you had to listen to Pawlenty for more than a few minutes. He won’t excite the base, or anyone.
But the main problem is that he is not a good communicator, he doesn’t present arguments well, he doesn’t sell well, and that’s the main job of the vp. Why go for this stolid communicator when there are plenty of effective communicators out there?

anotherJoe on July 18, 2012 at 9:11 PM

So if Pawlenty is on the ticket, then would this be the first time ever that neither pres nor veep candidate would be able to carry his own state?

Not in a million years do I think Romney will carry MA.

Quick two cents from a web developer: Its not common practice to take down your website when you’re re-designing it. You just leave the old one up, work on the new one on another server (or locally), and then you drop the new design on your server when its ready. If T-Paw has wiped his site clean, it was done intentionally to stoke this kind of speculation.

I’ve said many times that we need prudent, competent, reasonable, efficient, reliable, effective, dedicated, determined, insightful, smart people in the White House and in the next administration….

Pawlenty is absolutely right in his assessment and when he says ‘people are hurting’ he’s reflecting an awareness and empathy at once vital in the new president, vice president, and congress and yet sorely lacking in the current administration and a large portion of the current congess.

If Pawlenty is all that, then he ought to be at the top of the ticket.

I also have to say that I got several e-mails from Dem senator Bill Nelson using the phrase “people are hurting.” I don’t think it expresses healthy empathy, but instead paints people as pathetic. Politicians can find far better words to express the effect of Obama’s destructive policies.

Chances are that anyone the MSM is ‘hearing’ to be in the top-tier (Pawlenty, Portman, Jindal, Rice, etc.) is not going to be the veep. These are intentional head fakes by the Romney campaign to simultaneously distract the media and, ultimately, make them look like gossipy chatterboxes. The more that the Romney campaign ‘leaks’ hints that Rubio isn’t under consideration, and the more the media ‘hears’ rumbles of other names, the more and more likely it seems to be Rubio.

I’d prefer Jindal, but he’s receiving too much buzz to really be under real consideration. And there is no way Mitt is going to tap the sitting governor of the most disaster-prone state in the nation during the heart of hurricane season.

Probably not going to Paul Ryan either, my choice. He’s probably going to have his career languish in the House, bummer. He’s capable of more.

Note going to be Christ Christie, he is giving the keynote correct?

Portman? GAG, Old Bush re-tread. no, no, no, no.

It’s probably going to be Pawlenty (who couldn’t even beat Michelle Bachmann and turned tail and politically ran back to Minnesota). He couldn’t even compete in a neighboring state. Wonderful.

annoyinglittletwerp on July 18, 2012 at 10:02 PM

This from the link provided above about the 8 reasons why Palin is the gal for 2012……

Yesterday on The Weekly Standard’s blog, Bill Kristol fingered that anonymous top aide making speculative assessments about Sarah Palin’s mental state: “In fact, one aide who raised this possibility in the course of trashing Palin’s mental state to others in the McCain-Palin campaign was Steve Schmidt.”

Schmidt, who headed up day-to-day operations for the McCain campaign, angrily denied the accusation to Jonathan Martin. However, Randy Scheunemann, a top foreign policy advisor to the McCain campaign, backed up Kristol’s claim saying Schmidt has “a congenital aversion to the truth” and that he had heard Schmidt speculate about Palin having postpartum depression two different times.

I’d recommend the article since it names some names I had not heard before.

I don’t care about ’08 but it’s good to get the names so that when they get trotted out on MSNBC or CNN you know they are probably full of crapola.

Pawlenty: Romney doesn’t need a “flashy” running mate

Absolutely. We’ve already dealt with a “Hollywood” style presidency 3 times the past 100 years (Kennedy, Clinton, Obama).

Right now we need competency or the very least, a Presidential Administration that’s not actively outclassed and outgunned.

As much as “identity politics” are a bad idea, we’re gonna need it this cycle. In addition to having solid conservative credentials and sharp debating skills, Jindal would defuse the “GOP has nothing but old white guys” attack angle. We’ve already seen the Democrats swing the “you’re racist if you disagree with Obama” stick. Let’s trump their race card, this election is way too important to take anything for granted.

The Democrats will still play the race card. They’ll say that the Republicans are choosing a minority to hide their racism.
