Obamateurism of the Day

posted at 8:01 am on July 18, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Sometimes, a politician can take a difficult concept and make it easy for audiences to grasp. Others can take a fairly self-evident argument and turn it into … an insult. This week, Barack Obama exemplified the latter when he tried to underscore that economic success depends in some part on a free society, governed wisely. Instead, he told small-business owners that they didn’t have much to do with their own success, emphasis mine:

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.

Actually, had Obama not been so ham-fisted in his construction, he would have had a good point about the balance between liberty and the government that secures it.  We do need to have roads and bridges and the like that allow sellers and buyers to find each other; we need some regulation to prevent fraud and theft, in order to make markets operate efficiently and honestly. Our system of constitutional self-government provides a framework that allows for enough governance to provide those necessary checks without becoming overbearing, and without government distorting those markets for the preferred outcomes of elites rather than the outcomes decided by voluntary associations in the marketplace.

Unfortunately, we have deviated far down the latter path for decades, and Obama wants to go even farther down a road that leads to economic stagnation and the stunting of liberty.  That path also leads to the arrogance and ignorance on display when a politician who has never operated his own business or worked in any significant manner in the private sector tells people who took enormous risks to start their own businesses that “you didn’t build that” and “someone else made that happen.”  Of course the business owner built the business and was primarily the one that “made it happen”; without someone willing to take the risk, businesses wouldn’t get built at all.

Obama took an opportunity to make a good point and booted it into the realm of clueless-elite satire.  And he did it in a prepared speech.  Whether or not it took a White House village to create that speech, Obama made it, and this Obamateurism, happen.

Got an Obamateurism of the Day? If you see a foul-up by Barack Obama, e-mail it to me at obamaisms@edmorrissey.com with the quote and the link to the Obamateurism. I’ll post the best Obamateurisms on a daily basis, depending on how many I receive. Include a link to your blog, and I’ll give some link love as well. And unlike Slate, I promise to end the feature when Barack Obama leaves office.

This OOTD is a whopper. I expect it to follow him all the way to November.

I’m more convinced than ever that it will be a blowout win for Romney this fall and yet according to polls and pundits it will be the most…unexpected victory evah! None of Obama’s scandals and miscues seem to be moving the dial much, so I don’t trust the dial anymore.

Between crap speeches like this, his wedding/birthday/it’s not your special day gift registry and real scandals like fast and furious, he should be already packing up for his move back to Chicago (in any sane reality). To be sure, the only people I see defending him are the hopeless progs with their talking points and ad hominem attacks, so I’m predicting the fired up and ready to go masses from 2008 will stay on the couch with cousin Pookie and not bother to show up at the voting booth this year.

I have a dream.

Mitt Romney ought to hightail it to Dyersville, IA… stand on the pitching mound of the Field of Dreams and deliver a speech. Remind Americans what building something is all about— a dream. Tie in baseball, hard work, cornfields etc, and hang this comment around Obama’s neck. Remind iowans and others what its like to dream big, take risk, fail, get back up again and rely upon ourselves. Government is there to protect our liberty, and we are here to live it.

I’d say it’d be epic.

workingclass artist on July 18, 2012 at 8:14 AM

Actually government does nothing to build a business and does nothing to create jobs. The road wouldn’t have been built unless the business is there and the business pays plenty of taxes to fund that road construction and employee education and police and fire. We only have burdensome red tape to thank government for in the building of a business.

flytier on July 18, 2012 at 8:15 AM

This is an excellent Obamateurism – his best ones give you a real insight into his ideology. He could have put this more delicately but in the end he told you what he believes: no, you did not create your business. Anyone one else could have done the same or better. You did ok but you probably just got lucky. And anyway, none of you peons could have done anything at all without all the help and support and control that you depend on from Big Brother Government.

Esta claro, cabron?

I’m not even sure Bernie Sanders would have the gall to say such a thing and he at least labels himself a socialist.

Bark’s world view isn’t so much composite and confused. And it is strikingly unAmerican in its attitudes and presuppositions. One can accept the birth certificate and at the same time understand why people doubted if he actually was an American.

CorporatePiggy on July 18, 2012 at 8:16 AM

Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.

A little context actually makes it worse. Not only did you not build your business, but “somebody” who “invests” in infrastructure did it. That’s right, Mr. Investment built it for you.

You’re welcome.

Flora Duh on July 18, 2012 at 8:25 AM

Obama must be so cocksure self-confident of himself that he is going to easily slide into another term in office, because it is very apparent by the fact that he seems to feel he can now insult every business leader past and present who literally built something out of nothing, and then have the equally unmitigated gall and arrogance to say that it was because of government that a prosperous business came into being.

Not even Franklin D. Roosevelt would have stooped so low to have made a crass and unbelievably ignorant statement like the one Obama spewed forth, or he would have never even made it to a second term!

At some point, you run out of “somebody elses” that did things “for you.”

Especially since successful people are the ones who pay the taxes that pay for roads and other infrastructure.

Government should stick to being the umpire/referee, making sure the rules are followed and quit actually playing the game or trying to put the fix in for one side or the other.

Wrong, Obama. Everybody who produces and contributes taxes allows success to happen. Government derives its strength and limitations from the people who establish them. It is up to the individual to avail himself to the opportunities that our freedoms of the marketplace and of association create.

Yes, the elusive “somebody.” Maybe somebody in the MSM should ask Obama who that “somebody” was who made all that money that the government took and used to build those roads.

Of course, that might be too much to ask or expect from the Obama crotch-sniffing media. They, like all Obama voters, just assume that the money the government “invests” in roads comes from Obama’s magic money trees, or from his magic “stash,” and not from the taxes paid by hard-working business owners and the employees they hire.

“You built a factory out there? Good for you,” she says. “But I want to be clear: you moved your goods to market on the roads the rest of us paid for; you hired workers the rest of us paid to educate; you were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces that the rest of us paid for. You didn’t have to worry that marauding bands would come and seize everything at your factory, and hire someone to protect against this, because of the work the rest of us did.”

She continues: “Now look, you built a factory and it turned into something terrific, or a great idea? God bless. Keep a big hunk of it. But part of the underlying social contract is you take a hunk of that and pay forward for the next kid who comes along.”

As Romney pointed out, we paid for those things through taxes. They were not just given to us by unicorns.

This is more than an Obamateurism of the Day. This could be the “tipping point” gaffe that hands the election to Romney. As Romney said in his speech, an insult to every entrepreneur in this country.

Obama was really stupid to mention roads and bridges. Most of them are paid for by local and State governments, not the Federal government. While government might pay for them, using taxes levied on property owners AND BUSINESSES, roads and bridges are designed, built, and maintained by private for-profit businesses: engineering consultants, stone quarries, concrete companies, steel manufacturers, asphalt from oil companies, construction companies, using heavy equipment built by private for-profit businesses.

Government needs business, not the other way around!

If Obama was born in 1961, he would have graduated high school in 1979. They built the greatest country on earth.

jazzuscounty on July 18, 2012 at 10:51 AM

To a hammer the whole world is a nail.

Government waste and fraud is all 0bama knows.

jukin3 on July 18, 2012 at 10:57 AM

And to think that he got cheered for that speech..

Remember all the cheering from the congregation after Rev. Write’s ‘God Damn America’ speech? There are a lot of anti-Americans out there.

Schwalbe Me-262 on July 18, 2012 at 11:16 AM

That’s what he gets for taking his queue from Elizabeth Warren.

BRunner on July 18, 2012 at 11:21 AM

Just like sooner or later you’ve made enough money, sooner of later Obama will tell the truth. And that’s when no one likes him. To bad there isn’t anyone to intimidate this time, it’s all him and his staff.

Cindy Munford on July 18, 2012 at 11:21 AM

If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that.

Didn’t anybody tell everybody that somebody already did everything for them? Or maybe they didn’t believe it either.

lynncgb on July 18, 2012 at 11:27 AM

If you’ve got a business. you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.

Tells you all you need to know about this marxist moron and the absolute mess he’s made of the U.S. economy.

Put a fraud – who’s never accomplished a thing, or done an honest days work in his life – in the most important office in the country and this is what you get.

The dope is just pathetic.

Tim_CA on July 18, 2012 at 11:31 AM

So on point, it deserved to be repeated.

Ira on July 18, 2012 at 11:42 AM

Ignorance is bliss…

Primosharptooth on July 18, 2012 at 8:06 AM

True..but based on the number of Obama supporters shouldn’t this country be chock full of happy smiling people? At least 52% of the voters in ’08 anyway.

manyears on July 18, 2012 at 12:08 PM

I nominate this quote as candidate for OOTY

cmsinaz on July 18, 2012 at 8:03 AM

I’ve seen that comment a lot of times this year, from a lot of people. Every time someone thinks we’ve got a sure-fire OOTY, He surpasses it. This one might not even make the top 10 by the time the year is out

john1v6 on July 18, 2012 at 12:25 PM

Actually, had Obama not been so ham-fisted in his construction, he would have had a good point about the balance between liberty and the government that secures it. We do need to have roads and bridges and the like that allow sellers and buyers to find each other;

What Ignoramus Maximus Obama, and most on the left/right don’t focus on, is the OBVIOUS fact that said government is paid/sustained in full by the hard working taxpayers.

Thinking is very, very hard. A Dummy is President.

Of course the business owner built the business and was primarily the one that “made it happen”; without someone willing to take the risk, businesses wouldn’t get built at all.

25 million sole proprieters, with zero employees exist in the USA. Obama, get Fluked. All who don’t get that the gov’t is a big whore, sustained by such individuals is an idiot.

Schadenfreude on July 18, 2012 at 12:30 PM

sole proprietors they are…

Schadenfreude on July 18, 2012 at 12:31 PM

In addition to all of the other problems, there is a glaring logical error in Obama’s rant. Although a few people have made the point, most of the Pundits have missed it. Nor hasRomney has picked it up..

First, business pays the taxes that fund beneficial government actions (oxymoron?), then the government performs. Business can exist with minimal government support, but government is dependent upon taxes, largely from businesses. It is not the other way around. Unless, of course, like Statists, you believe that money grows on trees, or comes from the government fairy. Or that Obama just takes it from his stash.

Oldflyer on July 18, 2012 at 12:32 PM

These proprietors are going to be milked royally by Obama, the oaf in chief, with his new taxes. He hates the middle class.

Schadenfreude on July 18, 2012 at 12:32 PM

What ever happened to Prez Giggles with that toothy flashing smile?

dragondrop on July 18, 2012 at 12:34 PM

Exactly Schadenfreude. You made my very point while I was typing.

Oldflyer on July 18, 2012 at 12:34 PM

Oldflyer on July 18, 2012 at 12:34 PM

Thank you, and I’m glad you typed about the very same. I hate it when our side misses the obvious and doesn’t hammer the opposition into the heart of the matter.

p.s. are you retired from commercial/private flying? Answer only if you feel like it. Ignore otherwise, of course.
