Democrats starting a legislative push to get Romney to release his tax returns

posted at 5:21 pm on July 18, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

It’s actually come to this. Wow… just wow.

In the House, Rep. Sander Levin (D-Mich.) is proposing legislation that would require presidential candidates to release 10 years worth of tax returns and disclose any overseas investments.

And in the Senate, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich) are proposing beefing up financial disclosure forms for all candidates for federal office to require disclosure of overseas investments, including Swiss bank accounts.

The House bill would also require new disclosure of off-shore investments but specifically targeted the tax return issue. Rep. Sander Levin said Romney should “set the example” for future candidates and release his returns. But then he said the law must be changed so release of tax information is not at the discretion of candidates.

“I don’t think there’s any question now in terms of the responsibility of the candidate,” he said. “I think the law ought to now reflect that responsibility.”

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you read that correctly. Gone are the days when the United States Congress focused their business on Constitutional, nationally-relevant issues, like — oh, I don’t know — passing a budget. It appears that, while those gosh darn obstructionist Republicans with all of their useless show votes and filibusters are the malicious harbingers of utter partisanship, the Democrats are now dedicating their legislative efforts to supporting the Obama campaign’s petty fits of populist whimsy. Last week, on the heels of all of these “Bain Capital offshored jobs, the horror!” attacks, the Democrats latched on to the Olympic-uniform controversy and proposed the unbelievably protectionist-pandering “The Team USA Made in America Act of 2012.” (Shakin’ my head, friends… shakin’ my head.) Now, they’re aiming to use Congress’s powers to force Mitt Romney to comply with Team Obama’s free enterprise-demonizing, muckraking, distraction-oriented tantrums?

On the Senate floor Wednesday morning, Majority Leader Harry Reid said that both parties in Congress do what they can to protect and support their respective nominees.

“I understand there’s a presidential election going on,” Reid said this morning on the Senate floor. “I clearly understand that. We do what we can to protect the president of the United States. And I know there are efforts to protect their nominee.”

Yes, Sen. Reid, but there’s a big, fat difference between supporting your favored candidate with substantive policy proposals that second their larger visions for running the country, and with a piddling legislative agenda seeking to shore up the president’s bullying in a bold-faced attempt to get everybody to ignore the country’s biggest problems.

There is no earthly number of facepalms that could mitigate my exasperation.

Sheriff Joe says his official investigation proves Obama’s birth certificate is fake.
http://www.theblaze.com/stories/this-is-not-a-legitimate-birth-certificate-sheriff-joe-arpaio-claims-he-proved-obamas-birth-certificate-false/

He says he’s done with his investigation and now it’s up to congress to act. They’ve seen the orignial certificate and it’s been tampered with.

So, I’m wondering…. what’s more important to our nation right now? For congress to take a look at this investigation of a sitting President’s eligibility or spending time looking at a candidate’s tax records?

While we’re at it, let’s make it a requirement for President and all positions in Congress to release a valid birth certificate, all college transcripts, selective service registration, military records, results of a full security clearance background investigation, results of a drug test, and the results of a standard lifestyle and/or counter-intelligence polygraph – all pretty standard for many applicants to military, government, and government contractor jobs requiring a high level security clearance.

Good idea! The House Republicans should probably propose that so everyone can see the college grades of the Super Genius Editor of the Harvard Law Review who never wrote anything. The ‘rats will jump that ship faster than the Titanic…

dentarthurdent on July 18, 2012 at 6:01 PM

I joked on Twitter last night why didn’t Obama just issue an EO forcing Romney (and Romney only, of course) to turn over his tax returns. I guess Axlerod really does read those.

First of all, I don’t care how you feel about this issue: any law of this kind needs to be prospectively, that is, starting in the future (2013 and beyond).

Second of all, the specific issue of tax returns needs to apply to all candidates for federal public office, not just presidential candidates. This means that when these morons are up for re-election (it’s prospective, remember), they will have disclose 10 years of their tax returns. I would support that, but I bet that bill would have less than a snowballs chance in Hades of passing because they sure don’t want us to see how rich they got feeding off the government teat.

YOU WANT TO HAVE A BILL TO RELEASE ALL RECORDS – GO RIGHT AHEAD YOU NUMB SKULLS – BIRTH CERTICATES (ORIGINAL, NOT DOCTORED) PASSPORT, COLLEGE TRANSCRIPTS ETC., ETC.
FROM BREITBART:

Top Ten Things Obama Has Not Released
As the Obama campaign and the media continue to press Mitt Romney to release more of his tax returns, and to suggest–without a shred of evidence–that he is a “felon,” it is worth noting how much critical information Barack Obama has withheld from view–both as a candidate in 2008, and during his term in office. Here is a Breitbart News top ten list of things that Obama has refused to release (a complete list would fill volumes):
10. State senate papers. In the 2008 primary, Obama criticized Hillary Clinton for not releasing papers from her eight years time as First Lady–but failed to produce any papers from his eight years in Springfield. “They could have been thrown out,” he said.
9. Academic transcripts. His supposed academic brilliance was a major selling point, but Obama (by his own admission) was a mediocre student. His GPA at Occidental was a B-plus at best, and his entering class at Columbia was weak. Can he prove his merit?
8. Book proposal. Obama’s literary agent claimed he was “born in Kenya”–for sixteen years. His original book proposal exists–biographer David Maraniss refers to it–and seems to have embellished other key details of his life. Yet it has never been released.
7. Medical records. In 2000, and again (briefly) in 2008, GOP presidential candidate Sen. John McCain released thousands of pages of his medical records. Obama, who had abused drugs and continued smoking, merely provided a one-page doctor’s note.
6. Small-dollar donors. In 2008, the McCain campaign released the names of donors who had contributed less than $200, though it was not required to do so. But the Obama campaign refused, amidst accusations it had accepted illegal foreign contributions.
5. The Khalidi tape. In 2003, Obama attended a party for his good friend, the radical Palestinian academic Rashid Khalidi. The event featured incendiary anti-Israel rhetoric. The LA Times broke the story, but has refused to release the tape–and so has Obama.
4. The real White House guest list. Touting its transparency, the Obama White House released its guest logs–but kept many visits secret, and moved meetings with lobbyists off-site. It also refused to confirm the identities of visitors like Bertha Lewis of ACORN.
3. Countless FOIA requests. The Obama administration has been described as “the worst” ever in complying with Freedom of Information Act requests for documents. It has also punished whistleblowers like David Walpin, who exposed cronyism in Americorps.
2. Health reform negotiations. Candidate Obama promised that health care reform negotiations would be televised on C-SPAN. Instead, there were back-room deals woth millions with lobbyists and legislators–the details of which are only beginning to emerge.
1. Fast and Furious documents. After months of stonewalling Congress, Attorney General Eric Holder asked President Obama to use executive privilege to conceal thousands of documents related to the deadly scandal–and Obama did just that.
In addition to the above, Obama and his campaign have lied about many facts about his past–his membership in the New Party; his extensive connections with ACORN; and his continued relationship with domestic terrorist Bill Ayers and Jeremiah Wright, among other examples. Obama’s own memoir is filled with fabrications. And now he is lying about his opponent’s honorable record in business. He–and the media–have no shame.

But why even bother when this can be enforced with an executive order? It would be a much faster way to ensure the kind of transparency that Romney Sr. envisioned.

Heh.

Flick.

Key West Reader on July 18, 2012 at 6:59 PM

Romney should not release anything any more. He owes no one a thing.

Geithner didn’t pay his taxes, you leeches from the left and fools from the right, who ask for this.

Bambi, just highlighting the points…plus, they forgot:

- Selective Serivice docs
- His tax records for 23 years
- His passports and all the visas
- add your own

/oh, wait.

Key West Reader on July 18, 2012 at 7:04 PM

Why are they resticting this to Presidents? Seems kind of odd. LOL
This is so lame. People simply don’t care about this. They know Romney’s wealthy and made money off of investments. They don’t care. The idiot Dems are barking up the wrong tree on this. They keep trying stupid distractions which aren’t working. I love it!

1. Copy and paste the text that you want to quote.
2. Take the mouse (or equivalent) and highlight the text you just pasted from beginning to end.
3. Click the “quote” button at the top of the comment window you are working in. It will add both the opening and closing tags to the quote. You are done.
4. Click “Preview”
5. Pretend to carefully read the preview.
6. Click “Submit Comment”

– just in case you needed this. You might be making a choice not to quote. I would type all this in French, but it would be “cave French” — and you would laugh at me. :)

Add an amendment to include college transcripts, and you got a deal.

But not one Democrat would vote for that…

Dirty Creature on July 18, 2012 at 7:20 PM

So does that mean we are going to be able to figure out how no-talent politicos like John Dingle, Sheila Jackson Lee, Anthony Wiener, et al go to DC with the change in the pocket and come out millionaires 10 years later?

KenInIL on July 18, 2012 at 7:21 PM

Writing meets wall

Internals must be horrific.

America is going to drop kick chicagojesus through the goal post of real life.

Bye, bye, bammy.

Key West Reader on July 18, 2012 at 7:21 PM

Seriously, McConnell ought to agree with the proposal and suggest that medical records and college transcripts be thrown in too.

I’d love to suggest a copy of the candidates original birth certificate – but then I’d look too partisan. /

Join the Tea Party. We’re weeding them out one by one. Trials and revocation of life time pensions come later.

One election at a time.

Key West Reader on July 18, 2012 at 7:23 PM

So just amend the bill to also require the disclosure of education transcripts.

Heck, put the long-form birth certificate in there, too. Anything else?

malclave on July 18, 2012 at 7:26 PM

Woo-boy this is getting silly.

Had Romney done anything illegal, the IRS and Holder’s “Justice” Department would have been all over Romney by now. There is nothing in there except political ammunition for more class warfare.
