Democrats starting a legislative push to get Romney to release his tax returns

posted at 5:21 pm on July 18, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

It’s actually come to this. Wow… just wow.

In the House, Rep. Sander Levin (D-Mich.) is proposing legislation that would require presidential candidates to release 10 years worth of tax returns and disclose any overseas investments.

And in the Senate, Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) and Sen. Carl Levin (D-Mich) are proposing beefing up financial disclosure forms for all candidates for federal office to require disclosure of overseas investments, including Swiss bank accounts.

The House bill would also require new disclosure of off-shore investments but specifically targeted the tax return issue. Rep. Sander Levin said Romney should “set the example” for future candidates and release his returns. But then he said the law must be changed so release of tax information is not at the discretion of candidates.

“I don’t think there’s any question now in terms of the responsibility of the candidate,” he said. “I think the law ought to now reflect that responsibility.”

Yes, ladies and gentlemen, you read that correctly. Gone are the days when the United States Congress focused their business on Constitutional, nationally-relevant issues, like — oh, I don’t know — passing a budget. It appears that, while those gosh darn obstructionist Republicans with all of their useless show votes and filibusters are the malicious harbingers of utter partisanship, the Democrats are now dedicating their legislative efforts to supporting the Obama campaign’s petty fits of populist whimsy. Last week, on the heels of all of these “Bain Capital offshored jobs, the horror!” attacks, the Democrats latched on to the Olympic-uniform controversy and proposed the unbelievably protectionist-pandering “The Team USA Made in America Act of 2012.” (Shakin’ my head, friends… shakin’ my head.) Now, they’re aiming to use Congress’s powers to force Mitt Romney to comply with Team Obama’s free enterprise-demonizing, muckraking, distraction-oriented tantrums?

On the Senate floor Wednesday morning, Majority Leader Harry Reid said that both parties in Congress do what they can to protect and support their respective nominees.

“I understand there’s a presidential election going on,” Reid said this morning on the Senate floor. “I clearly understand that. We do what we can to protect the president of the United States. And I know there are efforts to protect their nominee.”

Yes, Sen. Reid, but there’s a big, fat difference between supporting your favored candidate with substantive policy proposals that second their larger visions for running the country, and with a piddling legislative agenda seeking to shore up the president’s bullying in a bold-faced attempt to get everybody to ignore the country’s biggest problems.

There is no earthly number of facepalms that could mitigate my exasperation.

We, of course, need medical records, school records, birth records, employment records. To start.

So the GOP attaches a simple amendment to the bill requiring all candidates to release their full college transcripts.

Two days later the demorats quietly withdraw the bill.

The GOP is going to cry when they lose, but it’s their own damn fault for not fighting back. Romney only needs to respond that he’ll release them when Obozo produces a “real” birth certificate, SSN Card, school transcripts, and a few other things. Obozo ran for president with virtually no vetting.

http://www.mcclatchydc.com/2012/07/18/156632/most-members-of-congress-keep.html

They do not, however, think that standard of transparency should apply to them. The two Democratic leaders of the Senate and the House of Representatives are among hundreds of senators and representatives from both parties who refused to release their tax records. Just 17 out of the 535 members of Congress released their most recent tax forms or provided some similar documentation of their tax liabilities in response to requests from McClatchy over the last three months. Another 19 replied that they wouldn’t release the information, and the remainder never responded to the query.

bayview on July 18, 2012 at 5:36 PM

The ONLY thing Obama was forthcoming about was tax returns – he gave returns way back to 2000. Anything else, Obama was super secretive … No medical records, no college records, no explanation for having a Connecticut Social Security number, no Fast and Furious data.

Obviously Romney is complying with the law, or they wouldn’t be trying to change it. If Mitt releases anything more, it should be contingent on some Obama ‘transparency’ where Obie coughs up some info!

While we’re at it, let’s make it a requirement for President and all positions in Congress to release a valid birth certificate, all college transcripts, selective service registration, military records, results of a full security clearance background investigation, results of a drug test, and the results of a standard lifestyle and/or counter-intelligence polygraph – all pretty standard for many applicants to military, government, and government contractor jobs requiring a high level security clearance.

Let’s see how fast Reid, Pelosi, Obummer, and nearly every Democrat runs away from that idea.

I was wondering about that. So Obummer only released 7 years of tax returns (2008 would not yet have been available when he started his run for Pres.) – funny – the same number the IRS requires us to keep.
So why are Dems crying for 10 years from Romney?

This is going to take about a week for the people not watching the LSM to get more than a bit annoyed and/or POed and have it backfire in the Dems’ faces.

If Romney releases his tax records, libs will spend from now to November 6th talking about them. All they can talk about is Romney and they need new material weekly, just like any other reality tv show. As time goes by, it will just get crazier and crazier (they’ve already called him a vampire capitalist and a felon) and this congressional move is the latest attempt to up the ratings. Romney should call attention to this nonsense but do nothing to assist it. Ultimately it will run its course (like the “war on women”) and libs will have nothing, which is why they are clinging to it, bitterly.

If your adding qualifications to be president in addition to those already enumerated in the Constitution, wouldn’t you have to do it by constitutional amendment?

Also, if the Constituion guarantees the right of Privacy as stated in Roe vs Wade, how can Congress force a candidate to give up a Constitutional right in order to be President. What’s next? Will the future presidential candidates have to give up their guns or go to church on Sunday before they can run?

MessesWithTexas on July 18, 2012 at 5:46 PM

There’s already a government-based mechanism in place for this sort of thing. It’s called an IRS audit. It usually happens when the IRS sees irregularities in a person’s tax returns. If Mitt had anything to hide within the last 10 years, the IRS would have given him the full anal exam by now.

As for whether a candidate for any office owns anything overseas — WHO CARES?? Their personal property is none of my, or anyone else’s, business. It’s what they do with MY property that concerns me.

the Left will always attack attack attack…with a given script. If you are Juan William, beckel, poltico, mika…or who ever..at this stage in the campaign, you circle your wagons and shoot outwards with you Kalashnikoves.

if you are not a leftist, you ponder, worry about your rep, figure you have to play it safe…and try to avoid pissing off the press, because after all they set the narratives….and buy the ink by the barrel

besides there is social calendar to worry about

thus, nro, brooks, kristol, will, noonan, lowry, york, barbour and on and on
