CBS/NYT poll shows voter enthusiasm among GOP sharply rising

posted at 10:41 am on July 18, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

After spending tens of millions of dollars trying to demonize Mitt Romney over the last two months, Barack Obama and his campaign had hoped to erode any enthusiasm for the Republican nominee.  According to the new CBS/NYT poll, not only have they failed, the effort may be backfiring:

Meantime, three and a half months before election day, Republican enthusiasm about voting this year has shot up since Mitt Romney clinched the nomination in April, from 36 percent of Republicans saying they were more enthusiastic in March to 49 percent now.

President Obama was helped to election in 2008 by a wave of voter enthusiasm among Democrats, however this year, Democratic enthusiasm is down a bit since March. Twenty-seven percent of Democrats said they were more enthusiastic about voting this year than they were in past elections, compared to 30 percent four months ago. And 48 percent of Democrats say their enthusiasm this year is the same as past elections, compared to 39 percent who answered the same question in March.

Independent voters’ enthusiasm is also up with 29 percent saying they’re more enthusiastic now from 22 percent four months ago.

Overall, voters aren’t as enthusiastic about this year’s election as they were in 2008. Just 33 percent of all registered voters said they were more enthusiastic this year than they were for past elections, compared to 41 percent in March 2008.

The CBS/NYT poll isn’t exactly known for its sample quality, so it will be interesting to see how that overall enthusiasm number relates to the D/R/I split.  If Republican enthusiasm increased by thirteen points and independents by seven points, the overall drop of only eight points seems a little low.

The big takeaway, though, is that 49% of Republicans and 29% of independents express increased enthusiasm for this election, while only 27% of Democrats say the same thing.  If Obama’s attacks are depressing enthusiasm, it’s pretty clear whose enthusiasm he’s depressing.  That was always the risk for a candidate whose main qualification for office was hope and change, and whose signature outcome has been economic stagnation.

They’re just braying any old made-up crap these days and hoping it sticks, because they know that if they were really in good shape, they’d be ahead by at least 10 points

And that the record of their light-bringer president would speak for itself.

This may be the quote that defines the election… Mitt was on fire in his speech yesterday.

behiker on July 18, 2012 at 10:56 AM

The 27% number for Democrats is actually a bit unfair as over 50% of registered Democrats answered, “What election?”

At least Romney looks as if he is finally going to go on the attack. His response yesterday to Obama’s asinine comments about business is a good start. Let’s hope Mitt keeps it up, and disassembles Obama and his Red Guards pronto. And no more of this “Obama is a nice guy” stuff, either. Mostly because money is a better guide to handicap a winner…

Polls work, but they aren’t the Oracle of Delphi anymore than the “Hot Sheets” are for Horse Racing, Lottery Numbers or other basic data-mining techniques. Polls, especially those by most MSM outlets are basic.

Plus, consider how far out we are from the actual election. At least 15% of the voters that will walk into the booth *still* would not have decided who they want until that second.

Plus add in all the extraneous stuff like the economy and jobs (can’t use a war as a excuse) and the working class voter is gonna go with his wallet and go with someone that has a different idea.

The anti-Mitts are out in force. How frustrating it must be for them that they can’t and won’t quell GOP voter enthusiasm.

Slainte on July 18, 2012 at 11:30 AM

So sorry, but Mitt has us beat in that department today.

Obama = Red rag to a bull.

I’ll be enthused to see SCOAMF boarding a plane with a one-way ticket to Chicago on January 20th, 2013.

Bitter Clinger on July 18, 2012 at 10:45 AM

I won’t. The guy belongs to a federal greybar motel. I hope he won’t mind sharing it with Eric Holder, and 7’2″ Jose whose parents died from gang violence along the border.

And now the lsm is giddy about an ad comparing mitt to tricky dick

When you start imitating the uhs and ers of your choice to win when you write I’d say you need to examine your internet addiction…

The villain in The Dark Knight Rises is named Bane. What is the name of the venture capital firm that Romney ran and around which there’s now this make-believe controversy? Bain. The movie has been in the works for a long time. The release date’s been known, summer 2012 for a long time. Do you think that it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire breathing four eyed whatever it is villain in this movie is named Bain?
You may think it’s ridiculous, I’m just telling you this is the kind of stuff the Obama team is lining up.

greataunty on July 18, 2012 at 11:22 AM

Aunty, I wouldn’t worry much: For one thing, the script for the movie was being penned and drawn upon an actual character in the Batman universe named Bane.

NOW, the fun part is: LET the knuckleheads DARE make the comparison for long. Besides PO’ing off the fanboys for Batman (lol) can you *imagine* the fun we can have comparing Obama to the Dark Knight?

Obama as Bruce Wayne?

A Rich (1%’er), White Guy (racist, cause of all worlds problems), that’s a vigilante (well, Drone strikes, yeah, but…)?

Or Obama as Batman?

I mean, you don’t even have to explain that, just Photoshop him wearing the Batsuit and have it split screen with the one of him in Mom jeans.

Talk about Comedey GOLD.

Gov Romney, I expect my check is in the mail for my consultant work….it’s not like you aren’t good for it… :o)

Pretty much every polling firm showed that the generic republican would be way ahead of 0bama because of the ABO movement.

Remember ABO? What ever happened to that?
