Video: NRCC hits Obama over small-business comments

posted at 2:41 pm on July 17, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

It didn’t take long for Republicans to attack Barack Obama over his declaration that small-business owners owe their success to government.  The NRCC has a new ad out today titled “He Doesn’t Get It,” which takes the President to task for his statement.  It asks how Americans can trust a man who clearly doesn’t understand the small-business world to fix what ails the American economy:

The Daily Mail points out how big a gift Obama gave the GOP with the assertion that small business owners “didn’t build it” themselves:

The inflammatory campaign speech comments underline the extent to which Obama believes that the state rather than ordinary citizens create jobs and wealth.

They highlight a key contrast with Mitt Romney, the presumptive Republican nominee, who is preaching a message of wealth creation by individuals and reinvigorating the private sector.

Andrea Saul, spokeswoman for Romney, told Fox News that the remarks ‘reflect just how unqualified he is to lead us to a real economic recovery’ and were ‘ insulting to the hardworking entrepreneurs, small-business owners, and job creators who are the backbone of our economy.’

A survey of small businesses by the US Chamber of Commerce shows that Obama’s own economic policies haven’t exactly contributed to their success:

Only one in five small businesses (20%) expect to add employees in 2013, according to the poll of 1,225 small business owners, conducted by Harris Interactive. The majority of small businesses say they are likely to keep the same number of employees over the next year – meaning there is likely to be little change in overall unemployment figures.

Following the Supreme Court’s decision on the President’s health care law, only 3% of small business owners report that the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the law will make them more likely to hire new employees. Seventy-two percent said the health care law will make it harder for them to hire.  When asked about the impact, several respondents said they will scale back their workforce to avoid triggering the employer mandate. …

Some additional findings from the survey:

  • 78% want government to get out of the way.
  • 90% are concerned about the impending fiscal cliff and are worried that Congress will fail to take action to prevent it.
  • Nearly 60% say that expiration of the 2001 and 2003 tax rates and other business provisions, coupled with sequestration, will directly impact their business’ growth.

That doesn’t exactly look like a group that believes it needed government to succeed.

Perhaps the President got confused.  He knows a number of big-business operators, many of whom contributed to his campaign in 2008 — and who ended up with taxpayer largesse after his election.  A new ad from the RNC takes a look at one of those cases, Steve Westly, who bundled $500,000 for Obama and got $500 million in taxpayer subsidies afterward:

Clearly, Westly couldn’t have done that without government — or to be more precise, Obama.  Unlike small business owners, Westly made his success the old-fashioned way … investing in a politician.

great ad… we need lots of images of all of the great inventions and entrepreneurs and their creations with a photoshopped BO telling them that they didn’t build that.. lol

Some people go around praising and thanking God for everything and saying they could not even have begun to have got it or done it without Him. His Royal Majesty, “I am the State”, King Insane Hussein Obama, feels that he should have no less position and worship for himself and from everybody. This is Obama’s pathology. The man is nuts. He belongs in a mental institution.

Paul Ryan had the definitive comment on Obama’s ridiculous statement about who builds a business.

He said that it was a moment that ‘the veil was pierced’ and that we saw Obama’s true ideology pouring forth.

That’s one good ad. Make it personal. Stick Obama’s name to every case of fraud, corruption, and waste that occurs under his clown posse, and let’s see how long his Teflon skin holds.

To Insane Hussein everything comes from the state, which is now him, and without it, and him, individuals would be nothing and have nothing, when in fact the state gets everything it has from individuals and would be nothing, and have nothing, without them. He is insane. He should be locked up.

I’m thinkin’ two (2) “C’s,” right now, for the Republicans.

First “C,” – “Cajones” – grow some.

Second “C,” – “Communist” – use it. Call Obamuh and his ilk exactly what they are. It’s about time that the malignancy of Communism be put back in the cesspool that it used to dwell in, in the minds of the people. It used to be a disgraceful word. That disgrace should be resurrected.

And, of course, the first “C” is necessary in order for the second “C” to be invoked.

I suppose if I was so inclined I could attack the grifter class, and tell them that the same government infrastructure that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates used to make millions in the private economy is also available to them.

Success is not a function of being smart, so why are you on welfare? Wealthy business owners aren’t hard-working either, so why do so many of you need food stamps?

Great ad, great point. I do believe many progressives don’t understand free markets, however many others, Obama included, do–they want to completely do away with the ‘free’ part and centrally control markets through government. When he campaigned to “fundamentally transform” America, this is what he meant. It’s the progressive goal. His ObamaCare “mandate” was never meant to work as advertised, it was intended to be “fixed” by government as the single payer. Insurance companies fell for that “better to have a seat at the table than be on the menu” mantra didn’t know it was a repeat of Vlad Drakul’s inviting potential rivals to a feast then burning the castle down with them in it.

the leftist media is increasing their war on Romney. CBS radio news had a story about how the campaign is getting ugly…because of John Sunnunu’s remarks about barry today

He has no idea how the American system functions, and we shouldn’t be surprised about that, because he spent his early years in Hawaii smoking something, spent the next set of years in Indonesia, another set of years in Indonesia, and, frankly, when he came to the U.S., he worked as a community organizer, which is a socialized structure, and then got into politics in Chicago.

it would have been better to have said that he spent the next many years in the cloistered lounges of academia

HotAir staff:
You may want to pay attention to this aspect of the Barack Obama story…

At a news conference [today] in Phoenix that will be live-streamed by WND, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his Cold Case Posse will present “indisputable proof” the Obama birth document released by the White House is a forgery, according to the posse’s lead investigator.

Mike Zullo said the new information was developed during an investigative trip to Hawaii in May.

The press conference will be held Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. Eastern Time at the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office. [Local time will be 2:30 p.m., as Arizona does not observe Daylight Saving Time].

The investigative team also promises to release more conclusions drawn from computer analysis of the document the White House released April 27, 2011. The White House claimed the document was “proof positive” that Obama is eligible for the presidency under Article 2, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution.

At the March 1 conference, as WND reported, Arpaio and his Cold Case Posse announced that probable cause exists to believe that the document purported to be Obama’s original, long-form birth certificate is a forgery. The posse said it also found probable cause to believe that Obama’s Selective Service registration form is fraudulent.

Three weeks after the March 1 press conference, Arpaio said there would be “tons” more potentially shocking information on Obama in connection with his probe into the president’s eligibility.

WND reported in May that a letter from Hawaii’s Department of Health verifying Obama’s birth in Honolulu has “opened the door” to some “shocking revelations” the posse is promising to disclose.

Well, let’s talk about this thing called the internet. And I am not talking about who did or didn’t invent it.

The U.S. Government does not now own, and never has, the phone lines leading to my house here in the woods in New Hampshire. The private telephone company strung them up here many years ago.

Interestingly enough, in recent years the internet has allowed me to be able to conduct more of my business out of my home, so technically I am using less of that government infrastructure than I used to use.

Think windmills.

mnjg on July 17, 2012 at 3:50 PM

I find it rather odd that both successful and unsuccessful businesses have equal access to the same government services (i.e., roads and bridges, infrastructure, police and fire protection, schools, etc.). So if the same government services are provided to all businesses, why is it that some businesses succeed and others fail? Businesses do not succeed or fail (relative to other businesses) because of what government does, but because they provide a good or service that the public wants at a price that they are willing to pay. Frankly, you don’t have to be a businessman to understand this concept. Just ask any American on or about April 15 what they think of the government’s “help.”

When is the last time anyone heard these words, “I’m from the IRS, and I’m here to help.” Not even the President believes that, but somehow he wants the rest of us to believe it.

I quote:

Because at that moment, when someone who took a high risk and failed asks for others to share the loss, liberals have a sudden moment of piercing clarity about whose decision to go into risky business it was, and who actually fully owns the failure. Funny, that.

And this piece by Brit Hume says everthing else:

BRIT HUME: It is fair to say that we know more tonight than we ever have about the president’s view of business and the economy. His assertion over the weekend that, ‘If you got a business, you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen’ explains nearly everything. He wasn’t talking about God, he was talking about government.

Here is a man that believes not just that the government provided framework of roads, bridges, defense and law enforcement helps the private sector. He believes these things are are the nerve center, the driving force. More important than any individual, talent, enterprise or initiative. As he put it: ‘There are a lot of smart people out.’ As for diligence: ‘There are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there.’ Success? ‘You didn’t get there on your own.’

This is a view that successful businessmen, women are merely the ones who did better at taking advantage of the benefits that government has bestowed. Therefore, he thinks they should be glad to pay an even greater share of federal taxes than they do. He calls that, ‘giving back,’ as if the government conferred all that they have and they shouldn’t mind returning a bit more of it where it came from.

This explains why so much stimulus money was spent to protect government and why his legislation on healthcare and financial reform involved extending the reach and power of, you guessed it, government.

As a small business owner who took out a second mortgage on his home, maxed out his credit cards, worked nights weekends, holidays and hasn’t had a vacation in eight years I’m not only insulted but dumbfounded by the POTUS’s remarks. If there was every any doubt this guy hasn’t a clue about not only what drives small business, but what our country is about this ends that doubt! We can not afford him or his people for another four years!!!!!!!

It’s obvious why Obama has been put on a teleprompter all these years. His mocking of entrepreneurs was so revealing. He seemed like he was on a roll and almost hated to stop talking about his distain for them. It was insulting to business owners from either party.

And so, generally speaking, Romney and co. can take a very simple tack here… Make his attack ads BRUTALLY truthful and accurate, zero need to stretch the truth, even one micron. Endless ammunition for this, and better yet, (Obama) is arming us with new material almost daily. That way any response from Bam Bam will be tepid, to useless… It will easily, and better contrast, the lies and innuendo, that those witless knuckleheads are trying to trot out, in the manner of team Romney calmly refuting each one, quickly, and in real time… Of course they will score some weak hits here and there, but we will eviscerate them in the end methinks… Kinda like that line in the 2nd Wall Street movie. “You stop telling lies about me, and I’ll stop telling the truth about you” Not that they will of course but you catch my drift here. ;-)

Because I am thinking, and I get it that Romney is keeping some info in the dark, and there are divided opinions on whether he should disclose tax years, etc., but lets go with he ain’t gonna, will never happen, period. With that in mind, every time someone tries to use it politically, be it the indumbent, and his team, or even a troll here trots out, i.e. Romney may be a felon, or Romney is hiding more tax shelters, there is one simple reply. Prove it! Every single time, PROVE IT!!! Nothing else. Then quickly turn to some idiotic, or worse dangerous thing/policy Obama and the left has advocated for, or done, that is just dangling out there like low hanging fruit, which requires no need for any verification, thus putting, properly, the focus where it should be. On failed, worse even yet, disastrous policies, and ideas. Is it a perfect strategy? Nothing is, however, will it be highly effective? You tell me…
