Video: Excellent — concealed-carrier stops an armed robbery

posted at 9:21 pm on July 17, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Ah, sweet justice — drink it in, it always goes down smooth. There are few things that warm my heart quite so much as watching a lawfully armed citizen give a good lesson to a couple of bad guys who seek to threaten, intimidate, and possibly cause fatal bodily harm to others while undermining the rule of law. In an Internet cafe in Florida the other night, two armed robbers likely gained a newfound respect for the Second Amendment, the hard way:

“Based on what I have seen and what I know at this time, I don’t anticipate filing any charges,” said Bill Gladson of the State Attorney’s Office for 5th Judicial Circuit.

Gladson said he has reviewed the security surveillance video from the cafe. While he still awaits final reports from the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, he said the shooting appeared justified.

Samuel Williams, 71, who fired the shots, has a concealed weapons permit, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Under Florida law, a person is allowed to use deadly force if he or she fears death or serious injury to themselves or others. …

…At least one of his 30 fellow patrons at the cafe wants to thank him.

“I think he is wonderful. If he wouldn’t have been there, there could have been some innocent people shot,” said Mary Beach.

Absolutely textbook. I’m always amazed by people who seemed shocked or aghast by their friends and neighbors carrying weapons — if you don’t want to take the responsibility of owning and carrying a firearm upon your person, that’s fine. It’s your life, and you can cope with the risks. But I would think they’d be grateful when perfectly responsible, law-abiding citizens like this create a positive externality for everybody else by undertaking the task. Honestly, if criminals thought a few more people might be carrying concealed weapons in these instances, how much more or less eager do you think they’d be to try and commit the crime in the first place?

I don’t think he was shooting to kill but to lightly chasten, if you will.

I am pretty sure the would-be bandits got a big dose of gun safety during the heist that was not.

I think commenters here writing about kill zones and gray matter have their aim off.

Go back and keep watching those action movies, guys!

DanMan on July 17, 2012 at 10:56 PM

As a fellow Florida concealed carry permit holder, I salute Mr. Williams for a job VERY well done. I would agree with Sherman1864 about his intentions. He averted the crime, and no innocent bystander got hit (as far as the article says). There are situations where lethal intent would be required, but I think he realized the young punks would turn tail when faced with equal force, as they did.

Besides the security it offers the concealed carrier, especially in those nighttime situations that might otherwise cause anxiety, it offers something more important that Erika points out. The presence of a concealed carry law and the potential for armed law abiding citizens is an awesome deterrent to crime. It has very distressing of late to read about all the recent carnage in “Chicagoland”. Illinois needs to get their head out of wherever it is, and restore the 2nd amendment in Illinois and Chicago. You provide the opportunity for law abiding citizens of Chicago to concealed carry, and those crime statistics would drop like a rock. Right now, it is not even a fair fight…the only ones with the guns are the thugs, so what do they expect?

Panhandler on July 17, 2012 at 10:59 PM

This is what prevents crime.

Career criminals aren’t afraid of the police. Police have been neutered to the point where their relationship with the people who keep them in business is practically genteel. Bail and lawyers are just the criminal’s cost of doing business. And, when all else fails, the occasional jail stretch earns them “street cred.”

Armed citizens are the only thing criminals are afraid of. And there are fewer of them every year.

logis on July 17, 2012 at 11:03 PM

Don’t know but if these lowlifes were black, as most armed robbers are likely to be, I hope Holder doesn’t investigate to see if their civil rights were violated.

If they were black and since the courageous old hero was white and aggressive, running after them and firing John Wayne style, we could have another Trayvon Martin like situation. Then I can see angry Jesse J and Sharpton arguing that if he had just stayed put probably no one would have gotten shot, and so this self-appointed vigilante should be arrested. I imagine they would be very disturbed by the thought of armed white & likely to racially profile John Wayne types going around.

Chessplayer on July 17, 2012 at 11:05 PM

He obviously wasn’t using a .45. If so, those crooks wouldn’t have walked away like that. Something to think about if you’re thinking about a CC permit.

Wife and I often pack our .45s. Heaven help the crooks that stumble across us when we’re packing ’cause wife shoots as straight as I do, and is less inclined to think twice about it when she feels threatened.

… as in ratio of number of armed citizens per criminal.

In my neck of the woods the number of armed citizens is increasing, but not necessarily at the same rate as the number of criminals. Difference is that criminals are taking their crime to other locations.

Hmm…

Maybe Mr. Williams should be hired as a police officer. Should police invade a home on a drug informant tip or maybe they should stake the place a bit.

I like the way he essentially ‘chased’ them out of the place by continuing to engage them… not to mention the ‘parting shot’ once they scrambled out the door.

That said, his .380 was concealable enough, but he should have been carrying a CZ-82 instead… more punch, concealable, very accurate, and 12 shots.

Not to mention the price…

Kenosha Kid on July 17, 2012 at 11:29 PM

Absolutely. TRAINING is the key, not the size of your bullet. “Any gun will do if YOU will do” is the motto of one national training school.

There are number of .45 ACP aficionados on this thread and yes, the .45 IS a great choice for self defense. But a projectile fired from a .45 is NOT a “magic bullet”, pardon the pun. A miss from a .45 is no better than a miss from a mouse gun.

Please realize that one reason this incident turned out the way it did is the fact that these two perps were – as you can plainly see in the video – bumbling idiots who assumed that everyone would simply wet their pants at their professed bravado.

Mr. Williams was able to go into action because the “shooter” stupidly turned his back to Mr. Williams. Had these two been “smart and determined” adversaries, the outcome of this incident would most likely have been quite different.

I don’t any shoot out is “textbook”.

Cindy Munford on July 18, 2012 at 12:16 AM

Agree. I was responding to Erika’s “Absolutely textbook” statement above.

I totally appreciate Mr. Williams standing up to stop the threat. But we owe it to ourselves, our families, and our community to maintain proficiency to a high standard. And that requires going well beyond the State-mandated minimum qualifying standards required to obtain the CCW. So I will reiterate: if you carry, you must seek out quality professional training, repeatedly, and do you part to master and maintain the skills, techniques and procedures of intelligent and effective defensive shooting.

I don’t really think it needs to be that much of an exclusive club. You should practice and get some training if you can but even the presence of a gun can save lives and that shouldn’t be reserved for trained personnel only.

sharrukin on July 18, 2012 at 12:50 AM

PolAgnostic on July 18, 2012 at 12:35 AM

It’s a simple, logical point: A determined attacker is not going to give up willingly. He is going to fight you with everything he’s got. If by lack of efficacy you fail to eliminate his ability to do harm, you risk your own survival and that of others at the scene. The attackers in the video were not stopped physiologically, they caved and ran.

The presence of a gun is necessary but often not sufficient. The situation in the video exemplifies that.

Cleombrotus on July 18, 2012 at 1:09 AM

As climbnjump said above, it’s not about caliber. Shot placement rules. The physiological stop requires causing trauma to vital organs, mainly heart and CNS.

Cleombrotus on July 18, 2012 at 1:09 AM

Is it at all possible that Mr. Williams deliberately carries in small caliber precisely because he does not intend to KILL? And is it equally possible that he aimed exactly where he wanted to hit?

The video suggests presence of mind on the part of Williams and nor emotional reaction. I’d say he did exactly what his training had prepared him to do.

I know I wouldn’t have been as aself-assured as he seems to be in that situation. Innocent bystanders would have been hit more than likely.

Reading your other replies and the light bulb went on!

You’ve taken some training (which is where you picked up the ‘determined attacker’ phrase – very popular phrase but more applicable to Al-Qaida than American punks) where they ran you around doing tactical shooting. Maybe the even did some simunition training to “make it real”.

Did they training you took involve people shooting at you?

If no, congratulations! You are hereby awarded the rank of internet commando. Just be sure not to make any claims based on your training around people who have had bullets going past their ears. They can tend to get a bit grouchy with those who have not.

I’d hazard a guess Mr. Williams was carrying a .380 because he carries it in a “pocket holster”. You can seem him holding a pocket holster at the end of the video.

You don’t think had the guy aimed to kill rather than maim and ward off things would not be different? A .38 is just as deadly with intent to kill and at that distance. Mob guys in Brooklyn back in the day used .22 as their weapon of choice.

In any case, that doesn’t look like a Ruger LCP, seems bigger and more squarish in shape, Ruger has a more rounded upper. And whatever the gun was, it obviously did the job, IMO.

Let’s not forget that CC was also the reason Gifford’s incident didn’t result in more carnage, too bad communist news promptly forgot that aspect.

Regarding the caliber discussion here, I think the best personal protection handgun is a 22. Self-defense statistics bear this out too. A .22 is not THE best statistically but it’s very near the top. You can train all day long for very little money with the thing, and actually hit what you’re shooting at.

S & W recently came out with a small, thin 9mm M & P semi-auto called The Shield. I haven’t seen one in person yet, but judging from the review on Outdoor Channel it looks promising for a CC weapon.

I was hoping to look at one in the gun shop last week (they can’t keep them in stock) and the salesman showed me the new single-stack, 5+1 XD .45. I haven’t been a fan of the way the XD looks (clunky – like it would be uncomfortable to carry), but this single-stack is downright slim and appears truly concealable. As may already have been noted, the first rule of a gunfight is to bring a gun. The one you left in your car or at home won’t do you any good out in public. I carry my .380 (with Critical Duty ammo) because it fits in my front pocket and nobody knows. If I can find a really good IWB holster that single-stack might be just the ticket to replace little Miss Elsie Pea.
Oh, and good on ya, Mr. Williams.

They are black. Here’s a story with their mug shots.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2175170/Harrowing-moment-elderly-internet-cafe-goer-guns-robbers-chases-door.html

The would-be robbers are now saying that the old guy’s response to their attempted robbery was much too violent. They say their gun was old and rusty, and they weren’t really going to shoot anybody, and the old guy should have stopped shooting after the one robber fell down.

They’re both 19. When I first saw this story, I was glad they weren’t killed and hoped they had both learned a lesson, but after reading about how they’ve reacted to the incident, it doesn’t sound like they have.

AZCoyote on July 18, 2012 at 8:07 AM

This is shameful, Hot Gas! What he should have done is called the police… then waited… then waited… then spent a couple of hours helping them fill out paperwork and handing out water to the traumatized and victimized patrons of his establishment.

Special Prosecutor Angela Corey says Samuel fired too many shots and should have stopped shooting after one robber fell from wound. She may charge him with attempted murder…

Karmi on July 18, 2012 at 8:24 AM

The bad news: The punks survived and will learn to become better, more efficient criminals in prison. When they get out in three years(?) they will be more skilled and better prepared to make you or I a victim…if we let them.

SKYFOX on July 18, 2012 at 8:26 AM

Gotta say, every time I watch this video I’m impressed. Williams is probably a Marine or at Veteran of some service.

I’m thinking that the thugs didn’t expect armed resistance and it all fell apart when the unexpected occurred, that being shot at by an “old guy.” Sucks when your “perfectly planned robbery” goes afoul like that :)

Summer, in Florida, wearing shorts…you carry a smaller caliber firearm usually. I carry a .32 with 10 rounds. Gotta hit ‘em twice, but that’s what the range time is all about. (9mm carry in “jeans weather.”)

Wife carries S&W 642 with Crimson Laser grip with .38+P in her purse. She loves that little red dot on the target!

I’m rethinking my summer carry, though. I do like the look of that that new S&W. Will have to see how it feels in my pocket or IWB.

———-
I think Mr. Williams should be entitled to the firearm of the robber, unless, as I suspect, it was stolen.

ProfShadow on July 18, 2012 at 8:26 AM

It’s a simple, logical point: A determined attacker is not going to give up willingly. He is going to fight you with everything he’s got. If by lack of efficacy you fail to eliminate his ability to do harm, you risk your own survival and that of others at the scene. The attackers in the video were not stopped physiologically, they caved and ran.

Kenosha Kid on July 18, 2012 at 12:56 AM

And they would not have done so if old man didn’t have a firearm pointed at them.

As will be the usual suspects in the anti-2nd Amendment brigade.

Clearly there needs to be a robber-victim code of conduct.

roy_batty on July 18, 2012 at 8:43 AM

Wow. That one old guy totally scattered those two punks. The sight of them tripping over themselves trying to run away is just priceless.

Imminent Dem reaction: we need to ban firearms in Internet cafes.

No, no, no. Weapons should NEVER be carried in the purse. It can get stolen. On-body carry only.

In a story I read, the guy with the bat took out at $1500 computer monitor, I guess to let people know he was serious.

Cindy Munford on July 17, 2012 at 9:46 PM

A $1500 computer monitor… I don’t think they make those any more…. unless it was a 60 incher. ;-)

Kenosha Kid on July 18, 2012 at 12:56 AM

Caving and running is good. The purpose of carrying a gun is to stop a threat. I’ve only had to pull a gun on someone twice on someone in civilian life. Once was with a double barrel shotgun I used on a group of individuals who had in mind to beat me to death. One of them did have a pistol, but he ran down the block and fired it wildly. The rest simply disappeared. After I got back into my apartment five police cars showed up. What saved me from incarceration was that I hadn’t actually fired any shots. The other more recent event was when I confronted someone who had just broken into my house. My weapon on that occasion was a Glock 31C (357 SIG). I backed him up on to the porch. He took the opportunity to run while I was calling the police. They had him in about 5 minutes. The police and I agreed that it was a great night when the perp was caught and no one was shot. Believe me, the last thing you want to do is shoot someone, if you can possibly avoid it.

claudius on July 18, 2012 at 9:22 AM

I wonder if the bad guys are planning any future jobs Or has Mr Williams caused them to consider a career change?

Herb on July 18, 2012 at 9:22 AM

The only thing missing was his aim. I’d have preferred to see the little bit of brains the two criminals had splattered on the floors and walls.

Now Floridians get to pay for their vacation.

Ah well, can’t have everything I guess.

Wolfmoon on July 17, 2012 at 10:33 PM

As much as we all would have liked to see the trash taken out, I honestly think if Williams wanted those punks dead, they would be. At 71, he probably didn’t want the hassle of Sharpton, Jackson, and 2,000 of their race-baiting friends camped out in front of his house screaming “RACSIT!!!” So he intentionally did the bare minimum to save innocent lives and property.

Maddie on July 18, 2012 at 9:24 AM

Possibly the most awesome thing I’ve seen today. It’s like an awesomely awesome first-person shooter game.

Hello all from France, where they would have just surrendered and opened wine.

Bigurn on July 18, 2012 at 9:35 AM

And this is why Zimmerman should be set free. If the blacks wanted to make a case, here is the one. Everyone is cheering the old guy who fired and drove the bandits out.

Why?

After the first shot, the bandits were in complete retreat, literally falling over themselves to get away and out the door. Yet the evil White man is pursuing the little darlings and fires while they pose no threat, in fact fires when they are sprawled on the ground and scrambling to run away. I would not be surprised if most of their wounds are in their backs. Yet everyone is cheering and like Zimmerman he is being assured that there will be no charges.

Zimmerman was on his back being beaten when he fired.

Bulletchaser on July 18, 2012 at 9:37 AM

A retreating attacker is not a defeated attacker as long as he still has his weapon. We kept bombing Iraq’s retreating army because they didn’t surrender. Surrender gets you mercy. Retreat just gets you more bullets.

Extrafishy on July 18, 2012 at 9:47 AM

Too bad there’s no audio. Collie, do you think they exchanged words?

My collie, lip-reader extraodinaire, says:

As they were stumbling over each other on their way out the door, the old man fired one more round for good measure, and I could’ve sworn that he said, “And stay off the lawn, too!”

CyberCipher on July 18, 2012 at 9:50 AM

Concealed carry – Why New Hampshire is always one of the safest states in the nation.

nhsteve on July 18, 2012 at 10:04 AM

Is it at all possible that Mr. Williams deliberately carries in small caliber precisely because he does not intend to KILL?

Cleombrotus on July 18, 2012 at 1:22 AM

Then he shouldn’t be carrying. The only reason to pull the trigger on a firearm is to put down what you’re shooting. Period. You don’t shoot to wound, or to intimidate (intimidation step occurs with the the reveal of the weapon) – you shoot to STOP.

And, that is the danger of these as…. *ahem* people. They make citizens second-guess perfectly appropriate, proper actions, putting themselves in danger unnecessarily. Once you squeeze the trigger, the object should be to shoot to kill – NOT to wound or scare or anything else.

Either way, kudos to Mr Williams for doing the right thing, and for preparing for that eventuality. Now, sir, hie thee back to the range, and get some more practice; and, get yourself a pistol that won’t give the bad guy a chance to make it out the door.

some of you here, in our collective near future, even though you seem to think gov’t run handgun proficiency classes should be mandatory, will rue the day when you aren’t armed, trust me. cause it’s better to have a gun and not need it, than to need a gun and not have it, words to LIVE by.
