On Palin & her potential lack of an invitation to the GOP convention

posted at 10:01 am on July 17, 2012 by Dustin Siggins

Yesterday morning Ed tagged a Newsweek article that tried to make hay out of the fact that Palin may not receive an invitation to speak at the GOP convention. Ed pointed out that this may not actually be a big deal, both to Palin and the grassroots, and I agree with comments made below the post by RBJ and Skwor that it’s likely just Newsweek trying to create controversy out of nothing substantive.

However, this is where RBJ, Skwor and a great deal of the Hot Air viewership and I may split our views. While I am not a fan of Mitt Romney’s candidacy, and think he is far too moderate in almost every way, I am not disappointed that Palin may not speak at the convention. In fact, I’m quite pleased.

When Palin first came onto the national scene in 2008, I knew literally nothing about her. I actually thought that Romney should have been the VP pick that year, since back then he had the backing of many prominent conservatives and his Olympic, gubernatorial and business background would have been useful during the economic crash. Of course, back then, I also thought he was a conservative — clearly, I’ve learned better since.

But back to Palin. I decided to keep an open mind prior to her 2008 GOP Convention speech, but afterwards was the only person in a roomful of conservative interns who thought it was merely decent. Everyone else was ecstatic about what she had said. I also watched part of her much-maligned Couric interview, but heard from my friend Adam Brickley — who as a college student helped launch Palin to the national spotlight — that I should not put much weight into what I saw there. I then spent the next two years reading her op-eds, watching her speak, and discussing the excitement many other young conservatives had for Palin and her future within the GOP, and realized I just didn’t think Palin added much to the conservative movement. Yes, she has her positive attributes, both personally and with regards to public policy. But between her unpopularity with the general public (yes, partially created and exacerbated by utterly dishonest media portrayals of Palin and her family, as well as completely hateful attacks on her by Paul Krugman and others after the Giffords shooting) and her lack of knowledge on issues outside of anti-corruption and energy policy, I think inviting her to speak at the convention would be a poor decision for the GOP.

Of course, inviting Palin to speak would have its positive effects. Certainly, much of the conservative base would be excited to see and hear her, and it would give them hope that Romney and the GOP establishment isn’t trying to take conservative votes for granted. Additionally, she is certainly a more powerful speaker than Romney and most of the GOP leadership. However, I think the negatives of such an appearance outweigh the net positives for those whose sole electoral goal is to get Obama out of office — including potentially scaring off moderate voters who are open to voting for Romney and giving the liberal media the opportunity to attach Romney to the largely unpopular Palin.

This is not to say the GOP should continue its path to liberal and corrupt political stances. I think one can be a philosophical, small-government conservative and still not want Sarah Palin leading the party, but her legions of fans do have a point that often it is establishment Republicans who are focusing on getting Palin out of the party. However, inviting Ted Cruz, Jim DeMint, Rand Paul, or any of several dozen other prominent conservatives to speak at the convention would provide the needed conservative slant in the lineup of speakers as well as the policy-strong opinions needed to stand up against a biased media intent on getting Obama re-elected.

Ot did Mitt really praise or imply we should heed the fat man from Joisey?

What a freaking loser!!! I’m so glad he didn’t win. He would have so tarnished the conservative brand by managing our country over the cliff.

In retrospect, good that CPAC invited him to speak and incriminate himself beyond doubt that he is no conservative. Rot in retirement, Mittness! !!

What about Brent Novell? Not surprised that there’s not a thread on him here. He just teamed turf blossom and a bunch of RINOs by name.

All in all, I think this could be the best CPAC yet. The conservatives are ticked and raring to take the party back and drive out the RINOs. Has to be this way or else let the GOP burn and start a new party over the next few years.

AH_C on March 17, 2013 at 3:31 AM

I haven’t watched the Romney CPAC video yet. Oh, Brent naming some? I’m not surprised as he’s spent some money in KY against McConnell. That was because they passed the fiscal cliff with increased taxes.

More than a few (mostly men?) complain about about Palin’s voice–as if that interferes with her cognitive thinking and strong moral character bonded to conservative values and a history of economic thrift with aproven record of a willingness to clean up those in her own party.

BYW the Emperor Hirohito gave few public speeches (unlike his ally Hitler) because he had a high falsetto voice–yet he was a powerful leader who led that tiny nation into a near victory over the mighty USA.

If the shallowest among our men would mature enough to see her leadership qualities and enough of the shallowest among our women could put aside their envy, and learn to judge her on her capabilites, which far out shines Obama’s, we might find ourselves with a real conservative leader for a change.

Is this going to be become a new Sarah’s Gulch?

For those who don’t know, the original Sarah’s Gulch is a top secret hangout for devoted Palin worshipers to discuss all things Palin. It was founded in protest over what the Palinistas saw as anti-Sarah bias among HotAir bloggers they believed were trying to bury a Sarah-themed thread. The Palinista cultists believe that HotAir is involved in a conspiracy against Sarah. Think I’m making this up? I’m not. I infiltrated the Gulch and observed their habits and expressions of anti-HotAir feelings firsthand. I would give the link here, but I’m afraid the Palinistas might flip out.

kind of ironic. Out of all the speeches given at CPAC Palin’s speech was probably the only one where the speaker themselves had a major hand in creating.

I guess in a way that is why her speeches are so good because like her her speeches are real. Not some boilerplate speech written by some paid speechwriter.

NO NO NO. Only Gov Palin does that. When Phyllis Schlafly silences the crowd with her tales of Conservatism back to Reagan when he was wet behind the ears and when she had to fight three Presidents and three of their wives and every star in Hollywood cursed her on late night TV, she had some paid speechwriter writing that for her.

Wonder who wrote Ann Coulter’s jokes. I loved the “Republican war on women? Well, only Ted Kennedy had a body count.”

Full of shout-outs and theatrics, Palin capitalized on the adoration she has drawn from this audience for many years. In passage after passage, she lauded the Constitution and called on conservatives to find common ground in fighting the federal government, the mainstream press, and Beltway consultants.

At one point, she pulled a Big Gulp soda from under the podium and drank a bit of it. The audience loved it. “Shoot, it’s just pop with lo-cal ice cubes in it!” she said, to laughs.

Palin also regaled listeners with a look into Christmas at the Palins. (Palin is set to pen a holiday book later this year.) She said her husband, Todd, got her a metal gun rack for the back of a four-wheeler, and she gave him a rifle. “He’s got the rifle, I got the rack,” she said.

Battling the “permanent political class” was a central, rousing theme. “If we truly know what we believe, we don’t need professionals to tell us,” she said.

And she called on attendees to encourage their friends to run for office. “Are you mad as hell and think that you have a better way? Then run yourself!” she said.

“The last thing we need is Washington D.C. vetting our candidates,” she said, criticizing the GOP politicos who have had little success. And she referred to “the architects,” a none-too-subtle dig at Karl Rove, Stu Stevens, and others.

She wrapped up the speech with a call to action: “We deserve better than the people who call themselves our leaders,” she said. “But we won’t get it unless we’re ready to fight, and this is one fight that is worth it.”

As she left, she hoisted the Big Gulp soda at the crowd, drawing even more applause from the group that was already on its feet.

Palin calls Obama a liar in speech to conservative activists

Reuters) – Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, called President Barack Obama a liar and urged her party to stand by conservative values, rousing the crowd at a conservative conference on Saturday.

“Barack Obama promised the most transparent administration ever. Barack Obama, you lie,” the former Alaska governor said in an address to the Conservative Political Action Conference near Washington.

She was echoing a line from a Republican member of the House of Representatives who shouted at Obama during a speech to Congress in 2009 and accused him of lying about healthcare for illegal immigrants.

Palin’s line drew a big round of applause from the audience, made up of Republican lawmakers and conservative activists.

She took aim at Obama’s plans to push gun control legislation through Congress, including background checks for gun buyers.

“More background checks? Dandy idea, Mr. President. Should have started with yours,” she said in a speech peppered with one-liners and folksy language.

Palin called on Republicans to stick to conservative principles as they learn lessons from Obama’s 2012 election victory over Mitt Romney.

“We’re not here to put a fresh coat of rhetorical paint on our party. We’re not here to abandon our principles in a contest of government giveaways. That’s a game we will never, ever win. We’re here to restore America,” she said.

Sarah Palin called for the conservative grassroots to avoid consultants in a fiercely anti-establishment speech that received the strongest response yet from a packed auditorium at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) on Saturday.
The next election is 20 months away. Now is the time to furlough the consultants, and tune out the pollsters, send the focus groups home and toss the political scripts. Because if we truly know what we believe, we don’t need professionals to tell us,” Palin said, one of at least a dozen lines that received standing ovations and sustained cheering from the crowd.

Her remarks echoed the prevailing anti-establishment sentiment of the conference, which typically attracts a large Tea Party and libertarian contingent of the Republican Party. Dozens of speakers before Palin also railed against the “consultant class” and urged attendees to take back control of the party.

The conference’s focus on the establishment versus grassroots reflects a wider rift in the party overall, following disappointing losses in 2012, when Republicans were largely caught off-guard by faulty polling assumptions and weak candidates in a number of Senate and House races.

A conflict has emerged between establishment Republicans, who hope to have a greater influence over party primaries in 2014 to prevent similarly weak candidates from costing them winnable elections, and the grassroots of the party, who would prefer party elders stay out.

Palin’s Next Step

By Katrina Trinko

Former Alaska governor Sarah Palin proved again today that she has the chops to thrill a conservative crowd like almost nobody else.

In her speech at the Conservative Political Action Conference, Palin delivered a series of snappy one-liners and pointed jibes, aimed both at liberals and the GOP establishment, that earned her plenty of applause and cheers.

But the clearest sign of Palin’s real power was the man on stage before her: Texas GOP senator Ted Cruz. Cruz, who surprised the crowd by introducing Palin, noted how crucial her endorsement was in his Texas GOP primary race against lieutenant governor David Dewhurst. “I would not be in the U.S. Senate today if it were not for Governor Sarah Palin,” Cruz said.

I meant to post this last night but decided not, but here we go anyway:

Bluegill;

I will make you a bet, right now. $100 IF Palin runs in 2016 she mops the floor with Christie…..Not saying she wins the General just saying she comes in at least one place above Christie, e.g. No. 1 to No. 2, or No. 2 to No. 3….Whattya say? Wanna make that bet?
‘Cuz I will.
You need to STFU about “Palin” because YOUR guy, Mr Severely Conservative, Mr Practical Conservative, Mr. Competent CEO/Manager…did NOT win.
And so what we CAN say is that Romney is a LOSER….and anyone still touting a LOSER or running down alternatives to a LOSER, is most likely a Bitter Clinger, and LOSER themselves.
Realists acknowledge Reality, that after giving his best shot, Romney failed to seal the deal and lost….It doesn’t say anything about Conservatives or Palin, or the Man in the Moon, it simply means your guy lost. And rather than being bitter about it, you might want to discuss, rationally, why he lost and then make adjustments to your platform to change future outcomes, e.g., bring your Base on Board, don’t support Assault Weapon Bans, don’t introduce Romney Care, DO take it to your opponent more, DON’t act as IF your opponent is a swell guy who just Gosh Darn It is just in over his head….DON’T assume that it’s “in the bag” because economics are in your favour…DO hammer home how THIS Administration has produced these awful economic statistics, etc. etc, etc.
And pouring scorn on folkz who did not run and who did or did not vote for your guy, isn’t doing any of the above. You are nothing but Edsel Ford, BLAMING THE CONSUMER, for your product’s failure. Trust me we laugh at you after a while….

JFKY on March 17, 2013 at 9:33 AM

JFKY on March 17, 2013 at 9:30 AM

I’d take all over Palin, though Perry seems like a buffoon who isn’t ready for primetime..

The only one that would make my decision tough is Christie. I’m talking about choice for nominee. Palin has ZERO chance of winning a national election. That much is obvious. And I can’t stand the traitorous behemoth Christie, so it would be a tough call. I’d have to vote Palin in that scenario.

But hey – America thanks you for it.
Dave Rywall on March 17, 2013 at 9:24 AM

Hey, we keep clowns like you around, too. Good for entertainment.

What’s wrong? Your Canadian political blogs couldn’t stand you so you had to come on American blogs and play the troll?

Your strategy of keeping those losers around for entertainment and continuing to lose elections is going to work out great.

Romney got more votes than Palin did in 2008.

Oh *WOW* You’re almost stalker-like fixation is coming thru NOW, Uh Bluegill, PALIN DIDN’T RUN IN 2008…Uh remember that was John McCain?

bluegill on March 17, 2013 at 9:26 AM

let’s see Palin has no political position has been out of the political discussion for the last 6 months or so as Mitt the loser took center stage and showed us all how big of a loser he and the PPC really are.

She is as the media and her haters like to tell us an enertainer, a reality star, a bomb thrower like Ann Colture who also gave a speech or a Phyllis Schlafly who also spoke at CPAC. Yet unlike those 2 people Palin got 3% of the straw poll the same has Jindal and in the same ballpark of Cruz, Walker and Carson. All those people are talked about as possible canddiates in 2016. Yet in bluegill’s little mind this feat makes Palin as hasbeen.

ROFL…ok.

the reaction Palin got from her speech, the way she worked the crowd into several standing ovations for her speech, the artciles written about her and her speech compared to those from Walker Jindal even Cruz tell anyone with half a brain that the speech did what it was intended to do. namley get the spotlight back onto Palin and make people and the media once again consider her a possible threat to run in 2016. this will allow her to once again have a strong voice in the primary elections of 2014 and give her even more clout as the kingmaker as oppsed to Rove.

It also allows her to start to bring the band back together if she so chooses and it will give her a bully pulpit to have a voice and power to direct the coming rebranding of the GOP.

unseen on March 17, 2013 at 9:40 AM

So basically you have no one you are FOR, just a hatred for Palin? What’s it like to be so bitter?
Mitt’s a great man who should be President, it is to laugh, not at Mitt, but at you.
JFKY on March 17, 2013 at 9:38 AM

I actually like all the potential candidates but Christie, Palin and Perry. I just think the Palin worship is especially harmful, so I do battle with it here. I will sacrifice my popularity here to do what i think js right. If people were praising Cruz here or someone else, I would say nothing, since I think the man deserves praise and is impressive.

The Palin thing is a total joke. I’m sorry, but she came across so childish in that speech. I get that it’s entertaining. But let’s quick considering her a serious contender. She’s not one.

And, by the way, I am at Denny’s right now on my iPhone. See how much I care. I comment no matter where I am.

bluegill on March 17, 2013 at 9:45 AM

Palin not only lost; she also damaged her credibility so badly through her incompetence during the campaign and afterwards that she is now political poison for all but a relatively small portion of the voting population.

bluegill on March 17, 2013 at 9:38 AM

Sen Ted cruz and many others would disagree…

Making a surprise celebrity shot just before Sarah Palin took the stage, Cruz reminded the crowd of Sarah Palin’s role in helping our current roster of young, conservative rock-stars get elected in the first place: “The mainstream media is absolutely convinced that women cannot be conservatives. … That’s why Gov. Palin drives the mainstream media bat-crap crazy. It shakes up their entire world view, and you know what, she can pick winners. Sarah Palin jumped in early and supported Rand Paul. She supported Marco Rubio. She supported Tim Scott. She supported Pat Toomey. She supported Nikki Haley. And this last election cycle, there were three Republicans who won new seats, Deb Fischer, Jeff Flake, and myself. She supported all three of us. Let me tell you something: I would not be in the U.S. Senate today if it were not for Gov. Sarah Palin. She is fearless, she is principled, she is courageous, and she is a mama grizzly.”

Hmmm. So four years ago, Governor Palin warned of the Obama Administration’s naive and short-sighted decision to cut missile defense in Alaska. For that she was roundly criticized by the usual suspects as being out of her depth or simply grandstanding for political gain. A year later Obama himself criticized Governor Palin as “not much of an expert on nuclear issues“, the implication being that he was. And yet it turns out now that she was right all along about defending America against North Korea’s nuclear threat. Obama’s decision to beef up missile defense in Alaska underscores the fact that he now knows she was right, though he’ll never admit it. It only took our president-in-short-pants four years to come to this conclusion, but better late than never, I suppose.

http://conservatives4palin.com/2013/03/obama-administration-to-boost-missile-defense-in-alaska-proves-governor-palin-was-right-all-along.html

So much for the smartest minds in the room once again Palin was 100% correct. I remember the START treaty was around the same time and Mitt’s flunkies also were saying Palin didn’t know what she was talking about.

hopefully this guy becomes the next chairman:

The largest U.S. banks are “practitioners of crony capitalism,” need to be broken up to ensure they are no longer considered too big to fail, and continue to threaten financial stability, a top Federal Reserve official said on Saturday.

Richard Fisher, president of the Dallas Fed, has been a critic of Wall Street’s disproportionate influence since the financial crisis. But he was now taking his message to an unusual audience for a central banker: a high-profile Republican political action committee.

Fisher said the existence of banks that are seen as likely to receive government bailouts if they fail gives them an unfair advantage, hurting economic competitiveness.

[...]

Fisher’s vision pits him directly against Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke, who recently argued during congressional testimony that regulators had made significant progress in addressing the problem of too big to fail. Bernanke asserted that market expectations that large financial institutions would be rescued is wrong.
