Romney: Obama running on “falsehood and dishonesty”

posted at 9:21 am on July 16, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Mitt Romney took a swing at Barack Obama’s “hope and change” legacy today, starting off his week back on offense. Romney slammed Obama for “falsehood and dishonesty” in his campaign ads, telling Fox and Friends that this kind of nasty campaigning “may work in Chicago,” but it will fail everywhere else:

He also took aim at Obama’s transparency. Shrugging off calls from Republicans to release more of his tax returns, Romney instead demanded more transparency from the President on Operation Fast and Furious:

“A campaign based on falsehood and dishonesty does not have long legs,” Romney said on “Fox and Friends,” later adding: “The president only has one thing going, and that is constant attacks on me. They’re dishonest. They’re misdirected. And I think the American people recognize that kind of politics as something of the past. It may work in Chicago, but it’s not going to work across America.”

The presumptive Republican nominee also dismissed calls from some in the GOP to release more of his tax returns, arguing it would only give the Obama campaign “more things to pick through, more things for their opposition research to make a mountain out of, and to distort and to be dishonest about.”

Romney tried to flip the transparency card back at the president.

“If we want to talk about transparency, the real issue is, why has this president used his presidential power and executive privilege to keep the information about the Fast and Furious program from being explained to the American people?” the former Massachusetts governor said, referring to Obama’s assertion of executive privilege over documents related to the disastrous “gun-walking” operation.

Finally, Romney wondered aloud why Obama doesn’t want to talk about his own record:

“What does it say about a president whose record is so poor that all he can do in this campaign is attack me?,” Romney asks.

He says: “I’d say to the president, wouldn’t it be interesting, Mr. President, if you spent time speaking about your record.”

Indeed.

Romney is coming dangerously close to looking like a Boy Scout by calling out Obama’s dishonesty. While we all know that O is a lying sack of excrement, such cynicism can be portrayed to voters as experience and political savvy versus naive optimism and inexperience…

Any thoughts?…

Romney is thinking that he can remain dignified in the hope the American public will make a reasoned choice come November.

Yes, only the grim irony for those of us who hew to a conservative line is that Romney was ever willing to cast his alleged dignity under the bus by going nuclear-negative when faced by conservatives. When confronted by a progressive like Obama, well, not so much. Suddenly he’s all country-club sterility-nobility ultra-poise punctuated by an occasional whimper about the unfairness of the Obamas or the editorial boards of newspapers like WaPo or the Boston Herald.

What a mystery.

Yes, this is classic ‘bracketing’, where you turn your opponents strengths in to weaknesses, only I was never really sure what Romney’s strengths ever were. I’m still not. Please forgive me. I just can’t shed my conservative principles so easily. Just what is the rationale for a Romney presidency again? I mean, other than the brute fact that he shares with the rest of all humanity the existential fact that he is not Obama or something? (In which case, I think we could have run an inanimate carbon rod with more success than a Romney.) Wait. I digress.

I won’t relitigate the last three months of snark and denigration from Team Mittbot against Palin, done at at time when Romney needed to unify the party. Not only did he not reach out to Palin and other Movement people, he swatted her (and others) away, convinced that they had nowhere to go.

victor82 on July 16, 2012 at 9:57 AM

I don’t remember that Romney and his team even mentioned Palin.

I get why Romney is not pounding him and his band of liars personally. But where are his surrogates? Why are they not going on the air and calling Stephanie Cutter a liar, considering she has not said one truthful thing about Romney in 4 days now (if ever), or calling Obama a hypocrite.

That is why he pays people and has surrogates. If they cant do it, they need to be either fired and/or asked not to be surrogates.

expect to the “falsehood and dishonesty” theme to be recurring, leading up to a blast at Obamacare. Obama lied to the nation….you WILL NOT be able to keep your insurance….you WILL NOT be able to keep your doctor.

I can hardly wait for Romney to release those ads….

Fast and Furious is a nice start but what about this as well? Here’s how you respond anytime ANYONE in the Oblama admin asks for more transparency from Romney:

“OK, sure I’ll release my tax returns when Obama releases his college transcripts”

All too easy

casuist on July 16, 2012 at 12:00 PM

Fixed it For Focus

This is what we must keep our eye on. Romney bashing is fruitless and only benefits Obama. A second term for Obama is the likely loss of America to being just another Euro style socialist country.

Fact be told, Romney is “gooder” than Obama, in every way, shape, and form. No matter how bad he is, he is still light years better than Obama.

That’s not hardball. Hardball is “President Obama and Attorney General Holder deliberately caused the deaths of hundreds of Mexicans in order to create a demand for more gun control here in America… and congressional Democrats are helping him to cover up this crime.”

When that’s the best you can do by way of an endorsement, you’re in a world of hurt. Imagine sending a quarterback to the field with a rationale like that. He’s the absolute worst. He’s terrible. I’m probably throwing the damned game. Hey, but he’s better than the guy sitting next to him on the bench.

CORRECTION:
ROMNEY: OBAMA RUNNING ON LIES AND CORRUPTION.

See, Mitts. It’s not so hard to call a spade a spade. Stop being lily livered and put those goody two shoes aside. This is not a religious retreat you’re on. This is politics, and nasty politics I might add.

casuist on July 16, 2012 at 1:15 PM

Hey, brainy smurf, please tell us who it is that is the “guy sitting next to him on the bench”? I did not support Romney in the primaries. We had better. But, as Newt said many times in one or more of those debates, “anybody on this stage is better than Obama”.

As time passes that becomes more true. The raging liar just said that small business people are not responsible for the success of their businesses. This idiot has no clue about business, large or small. He is 110% not qualified to be president. He has NO idea how to do anything but drive us off the cliff, and that will be the theme of his second term. Is that what you want?

Try looking past the end of your nose. Don’t be such an idiot.

NOMOBO on July 16, 2012 at 3:45 PM

tomas on July 16, 2012 at 12:50 PM

Megan Kelly already did this on Fox today. She was screaming & pointing her fingers that “They both do it! They both lie & run ads that fact checkers have said are full of falsehoods! They both want to talk about the minutia! Romney did it with the Solyndra ad [edit -- me WTF is she talking about?] and Obama is doing it with Bain! What about the 23 million people out of work?” At another point she made a scrunched up face & used a whiny, high pitched to imitate Romney “asking for an apology.”

It was surreal & infuriating, but that’s the new meme: Romney and Obama are *both* running away from the real issues and are *both* doing nothing but attacking the other one. Now, Sununu came on in the next segment & corrected her on that — he said “I appreciate you wanting to be fair & balanced, but Obama is the one attacking. Romney is the one who is happy to talk about solutions to the problems this country is facing, but he is forced to respond to these attacks or people would say he is ignoring them.”

And that all just proves why those calling for Romney to use harsher words against Obama are dead wrong. They’re calling him a racist for using the word Obamacare (which is printed on shirts Team Obama is selling), a below-the-belt hitter for calling Obama out on documented lies and charging him, Romney, with wanting to talk about anything *but* the economy, as it is. If he used any harsher language, they’d have his head and he’d never get to talk about the economy or Obama’s record again. I understand the frustration here because we all know *exactly* who Obama is, but the fact is so does Romney. But he also knows the MSM, including the conservative pundits like Bill Kristol who is screaming for Romney to allow Obama to dictate his campaign by turning over more tax returns — are all in the tank for Obama.

Romney has to walk a delicate line here handling them until the debates when people can see him confront Obama & the MSM face to face in real time without MSM pro-Obama spin. Don’t fool yourself — that is the *only* way a Republican has *ever* won a presidential election — because the MSM has *always* been pro-Dem (although granted, not as obviously as they are for Obama). So give me a break with what Romney did to other Republicans in the primary – the difference is they were Republicans not MSM protected liberals & certainly not the Teh Precious Obama.

Jeez, it’s like some of you have never seen a presidential campaign before.

This is sad for two reasons.

A. Romney isn’t Kerry. Kerry was a gigalo, not self made, who married into money twice and had his own military pals throw him under the bus.

B. I find it interesting how so called “Conservatives” are so spineless, that they’re already saying don’t blame me, he’s not my guy ….after a couple tough weeks of BS Ads in July.

It’s the ABR CYA move. If Romney wins, we owe them for sucking it up & voting for him. If he loses, they get to say “I told you so” to the rest of us. It’s win-win for them.

Dark Star on July 16, 2012 at 5:18 PM

Romney has a low likability factor and releasing the tax returns will make it much worse. Not releasing is bad too. Obama and team are “Karl Roving” Romney’s Bain business experience. Obama’s plan is to simply be the more likable candidate (the more likable candidate always wins the White House). Beating O is not like beating Newt or little Ricky. Hoping for the economy to collapse before November is a bad political plan.

Tell that to Richard Nixon — he wasn’t the “likable” candidate either time that he won.

And if you hadn’t notices, your guy’s “likability” is sinking every day in the polls — as skewed & out-weighted D as they are.

And the Keystone Kops running Obama’s campaign couldn’t Karl Rove anyone even if Karl Rove himself held their hands & drew them a map. What they are doing is *trying* to Karl Rove Romney, but the difference is there was always some truth behind Karl Rove’s moves that actually appealed to a broad base of voters (i.e., Kerry’s conduct during the war). Here all the Obama team has is a whole lotta nothin’ that no one outside of Team Obama cares about

But if you want to keep believing that people are looking around at friends & family out of work, 42 straight months of unemployment at more than 8% and public policies that are a disaster and saying “but Obama’s is such a nice guy and at least he doesn’t have a Swiss bank account, so I’m voting for him” fine. Whatever helps you sleep at night.

Dark Star on July 16, 2012 at 7:18 PM

Looking dignified is a foreign word in politics, look at the left and listen to their talk, If America wants a change in Presidents they better start looking at the record the current President is hiding like all the rest of his history. What’s wrong with the GOP base? The base ran a beautiful second to Obama last election with their hero McCain. The base is going to mess this one up too with their fuzzy logic and I’m hoping Mitt runs his own game and ignores the loosing base advice.
