Obama: “If You’ve Been Successful, You Didn’t Get There On Your Own”

posted at 2:01 pm on July 16, 2012 by Dustin Siggins

In a Friday speech in Roanoke, Virginia, President Obama attacked the idea that the wealthy get that way on their own. From the Real Clear Politics partial transcript:

[L]ook, if you’ve been successful, you didn’t get there on your own. You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart. There are a lot of smart people out there. It must be because I worked harder than everybody else. Let me tell you something — there are a whole bunch of hardworking people out there. (Applause.)

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen. The Internet didn’t get invented on its own. Government research created the Internet so that all the companies could make money off the Internet.

Jazz Shaw tagged this part of the speech in a post on Saturday, and noted that President Obama is taking this part of his speech almost directly from the mouth of Massachusetts Senate candidate Elizabeth Warren. Back in 2011 Warren famously said the following:

“You [wealthy people] moved your goods on roads the rest of us paid for. You hired workers the rest of us paid to educate. You were safe in your factory because of police forces and fire forces the rest of us paid for.”

This is a fantastic campaign line. Or, rather, it should have been, but as Jazz pointed out it fell down around Warren’s ears. Perhaps the rhetoric couldn’t stand up against the facts, such as the following:

1. The wealthy already pay more taxes than everyone else, both as a percentage of total federal taxes collected and as a percentage of their own income. So unless Obama is seeing different facts than the rest of us, upper-income earners are definitely not getting a free ride, or even half of a free ride, on the backs of middle-class earners. So the “somebody” who “invested” in “publicly funded widget XYZ” is actually the wealthy person Obama is bashing.

2. Unless wealth was earned dishonestly, it belongs first and foremost to its earner. Otherwise, we no longer have a country of free people earning money and paying a small amount of it (or, rather, what should be a small amount, and would be if our federal government was the size the Constitution dictated it ought to be) to taxes. Instead, we have a nation of people who earn money first and foremost for government. Combined with the recent Supreme Court decision that forced contracts are now legal (my interpretation, at least, of the practical implication of the Court’s decision that the mandate is a tax), this attitude by the highest office-holder in the land is quite dangerous. Not new, of course — liberals have used this language at least as long as I’ve been around, which is an ancient nearly-27 years — but dangerous.

3. I’ve long argued with liberal friends and acquaintances that even if  business owners (especially wealthy ones) don’t pay “enough” in taxes, their contributions to society through an expanded tax base, an expanded economic pie, providing income for employees and their families, providing employees with the opportunity to learn and use skills, etc. more than make up for any perceived lack of taxation. I have yet to convince any liberals of the validity of this argument, but hope springs eternal.

4. Tangentially-related, most of the social services and publicly-funded investments Obama is talking about aren’t even paid for by the people he is pandering to. In fact, the taxes covering those programs are largely paid for by the very people he’s bashing. As I wrote last week:

While almost all Americans do pay some sort of federal taxes – from taxes on cigarettes to payroll taxes…the 50% or so of taxpayers who don’t pay non-payroll income taxes benefit from federally-funded roads, education services, immigration control, the military and other federal services. Who, then, pays for these services? According to the Tax Foundation in an October 2011 report, “The top 5 percent earned 31.7 percent of the nation’s adjusted gross income, but paid approximately 58.7 percent of federal individual income taxes.” In short, most taxes for non-retirement social spending – the same social spending liberals are so keen on expanding – are being paid by those people liberals also say don’t pay enough in taxes – the top five percent, whose income was a relatively modest $154,643,000 in 2009, according to the Tax Foundation.

The facts stand on their own, and are more powerful than any rhetorical devices Obama or Warren can come up with — the wealthy pay their fair share, on average, and while the tax system is certainly deficient (it provides many well-connected rich Americans with special loopholes, and prevents 50% of workers from paying any non-payroll income taxes at all, to name but two flaws) it does not need higher rates while spending continues to grow unchecked and without proper oversight. Obama wants higher taxes? How about we cut spending by 20% or 30% as a trade-off or, better yet, simply eliminate loopholes and apply some of the extra tax revenue to deficit reduction and the rest to lower rates for everyone? Would that be the balanced approach he allegedly wants, and claimed to be for on Friday?

Absolutely true. You did not get there on your own. You got there by building on the successes of other creators who came before you. They invented and produced and paid taxes which all added to the environment. You did not get here on the backs of the ramora class which adds nothing, but expects you to share your wealth after you created something. These are the fat, lazy “fans” who sit in the stands and then expect the athlete to believe that their accomplishments wouldn’t have occurred without their cheerleading. What a pile of cr*p.

I’ve long argued with liberal friends and acquaintances that even if business owners (especially wealthy ones) don’t pay “enough” in taxes,

Yet we have the highest corporate tax rate in the world, higher than every country in Europe and way higher than Canada.

If we want to attract business and investment to the US (in order to create jobs) we need to slash our rate just to compete.

Why can’t the Left understand this?

But out in the real world…Obama hasn’t a clue.

Matter of fact, he has worked assiduously to make sure that Americans of any stripe are prevented from becoming successful…unless of course they are celebrities, sports figures, or willing to bundle money to Constant Campaign Obama.

Face it, Obama is a putz.

And he got there all on his own.

tommyboy on July 16, 2012 at 2:20 PM

I get that there’s a lot that goes into success. Many of the same people that were able to build amazing businesses in the U.S. would not have been able to do the same thing if they grew up in the Congo. There just wouldn’t have been the stability and infrastructure to pull it off.

But, as Americans we’ve all got access to those same foundations. The legal systems, the safety afforded by the police, firemen and military, people educated by the school systems, roads to transport goods, etc. We’ve all got access to those and yet, we aren’t all building amazing businesses.

That leads me to believe there might just be something additional that these people are bringing to their lives. A little something extra that separates them from the rest of us that are content to just go to work and bring home a paycheck (or go to the mailbox and bring home a welfare check as the case may be).

I went to a dentist once for a root canal. She broke my tooth and left part of it in my gum. Later when I brought a suit in court against her I found out she’d gotten into college through affirmative action. I submit that the reason Obama won’t release his college transcripts is because he got in on affirmative action. The moral of this story is when you are elevated simply because your skin color you aren’t as qualified as someone who is elevated because of their abilities. Both Obama and the dentist weren’t qualified for the positions they were elevated and the result is disaster. Obama knows he didn’t earn anything and he’s jealous of those that do. It’s the little man syndrome. Like Napoleon I’m hopeful that this little man will be exiled to his own persona Elba….and soon! As to the dentist, she lost her license. Turns out I’m not the only one she left with a pain in their teeth.

I think it can now be said, without equivocation — without equivocation — that this man hates this country. He is trying — Barack Obama is trying — to dismantle, brick by brick, the American dream.

There’s no other way to put this. There’s no other way to explain this.

He was indoctrinated as a child. His father was a communist. His mother was a leftist. He was sent to prep and Ivy League schools where his contempt for the country was reinforced. He moved to Chicago. It was the home of the radical-left movement. He hooks up to Ayers and Dohrn and Rashid Khalidi. He learns the ruthlessness of Cook County politics.

This is what we have as a president: A radical ideologue, a ruthless politician who despises the country and the way it was founded and the way in which it became great.

He hates it.—Rush Limbaugh 7/16/12

ThePrimordialOrderedPair on July 16, 2012 at 2:10 PM

The government didn’t really get involved with building roads and bridges until the early 20th century. Until then, the vast majority of them were privately capitalized.

Same with the railroads. The rail routes from the East Coast out to Chicago were all built with private funds long before the US Government started to bankroll the “Intercontinental” Railroad in the middle of the 19th century.

Del Dolemonte on July 16, 2012 at 2:29 PM

Can’t you just hear Obama and Schumer and Pelosi and all the Democrats saying something similar?

The complete paragraph containing Marx’s statement of the creed in the ‘Critique of the Gotha Program’ is as follows:

In a higher phase of communist society, after the enslaving subordination of the individual to the division of labor, and therewith also the antithesis between mental and physical labor, has vanished; after labor has become not only a means of life but life’s prime want; after the productive forces have also increased with the all-around development of the individual, and all the springs of co-operative wealth flow more abundantly—only then can the narrow horizon of bourgeois right be crossed in its entirety and society inscribe on its banners: From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs!

Although Marx is popularly thought of as the originator of the phrase, the slogan was common to the socialist movement and was first used by Louis Blanc in 1839, in “The organization of work”.
The origin of this phrasing has also been attributed to the French communist Morelly, who proposed in his 1755 Code of Nature “Sacred and Fundamental Laws that would tear out the roots of vice and of all the evils of a society” including

I. Nothing in society will belong to anyone, either as a personal possession or as capital goods, except the things for which the person has immediate use, for either his needs, his pleasures, or his daily work.

II. Every citizen will be a public man, sustained by, supported by, and occupied at the public expense.

III. Every citizen will make his particular contribution to the activities of the community according to his capacity, his talent and his age; it is on this basis that his duties will be determined, in conformity with the distributive laws.

We need to play up the fact that not only is attacking the wealthier going to hurt the economy now, not just in the amount and quality of jobs, but also we need to play up the point that we all dream of being wealthy, and O is undermining that dream, even if you’re not wealthy yet.

II. Every citizen will be a public man, sustained by, supported by, and occupied at the public expense.

This is why they ARE HAPPY when people are loving those FOOD STAMPS.

Does the American voter see what is going on here? Do they even care?
Would they just be happy getting a gift card to Starbucks and a debit card for Walmart every month in exchange for their freedom?

So Solyndra got to where they are by your help???…

My business was started in 1993. It was started after going to graduate school full time while holding down a full time job. The first ten years in business I averaged 70 hour weeks between the field and the office.

In 2008 I cashed in my IRA and took a loan out on my house to make payroll so I wouldn’t have to lay anyone off. I took this course of action so as not to lose qualified people that I would need when things get better. In 2010 I didn’t pay myself.

Obama you are the north end of a south bound horse! What you don’t know about the free market system, and American values could dwarf the Encyclopedia Britanica. Unforyunately getting you out of office is only a small portion of the solution. We need to educate the IDIOTS that voted for you. God help us.

chicken thief on July 16, 2012 at 2:32 PM

If you were successful, somebody along the line gave you some help. There was a great teacher somewhere in your life. Somebody helped to create this unbelievable American system that we have that allowed you to thrive. Somebody invested in roads and bridges. If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.

So who is this somebody else and how did they get to where they are in a position to do that?

mr.blacksheep on July 16, 2012 at 2:33 PM

You see this cat Shaft is a bad mother — (Shut your mouth)
But I’m talkin’ about Shaft (Then we can dig it)

Or imagine if someone had said:

“If Isaac Hayes is credited for writing and performing Shaft, he didn’t do that. Someone else made that happen.”

You see this cat Obama is a bad mother — we can dig it

J_Crater on July 16, 2012 at 2:34 PM

So who shall we give credit for all of Husseins “accomplishments”, Karl Marx?

antipc on July 16, 2012 at 2:34 PM

Yeah, cuz it’s been someone else out there every morning at 5a.m. milking my brother-n-laws cows, right? Some govt. employee is in my sister’s flower shop at 6 a.m. making funeral arrangements? Someone else draws up the plans for her husband’s contracting business? These people have never taken a handout from the govt. but he wants to claim all their hard work as his. That’s just how he rolls apparently all of his retarded life!

He is an effing ignoramus!!

JAM on July 16, 2012 at 2:34 PM

Well, we know he didn’t get where he is on his own. From that standpoint, I can see why he believes this. Arrogant p.o.s.

totherightofthem on July 16, 2012 at 2:34 PM

Easy – private investment – as with the wagons, ships, railroads, etc.
Where did the government get the money to build the things they actually did build? – By taxing the people and business that were already successful.

Yes, I know, which is why I clarified my post further down.

Dante on July 16, 2012 at 2:35 PM

Somebody else made that happen

I’ll have to keep this bit of projection in mind the next time the One tries to take credit for something.

forest on July 16, 2012 at 2:35 PM

If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.

If you’ve been saving for your retirement, if you’ve got a little bit stashed away in your 401k and your IRA — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.

bitsy on July 16, 2012 at 2:35 PM

I get that there’s a lot that goes into success. Many of the same people that were able to build amazing businesses in the U.S. would not have been able to do the same thing if they grew up in the Congo. There just wouldn’t have been the stability and infrastructure to pull it off.

JadeNYU on July 16, 2012 at 2:20 PM

That is true, to a point. Math is the foundation of all advancement, as it is the foundation of all science. Doing math requires nothing but pen and paper. Anyone can do it and it costs nothing. Without proficiency in math and abilities at the frontier, no society can go anywhere. Congo has never had any great mathematicians. Not even near great. Great mathematicians are born, not made. There is nothing a society can do to create great mathematicians and scientists. Either they appear or they don’t.

That is why Congo is Congo and it has little to do with the fact that the governmental infrastructure is a chaotic mess. Their governmental infrastructure is a mess because of that. Chances are that, if an Edison or DaVinci were born in Congo, Congo would be a very different place.

That said, as you state, our government used to provide nothing but the protection of our rights and property. It was American genius that built that rest and the American work ethic that filled it all out.

Scum-sucking slime like Barky and his minions are nothing but raw costs to the society unlucky enough to be burdened with their worthless existence (and worse). They live off of the production of everyone else and they look to suck the life out of the golden goose that has given them the illusion that they are part of the modern world.

Who invented cars?

Who invented the personal computer?

bitsy on July 16, 2012 at 2:29 PM

Oooo ooooo oooo – I know these….
Henry Ford (I know – he didn’t “invent” the car) got a gubmint grant to build his factories, right?
Personal computers – oh ya – we only have those because VP algore invented the internet – right?
I’m sure Alexander G Bell, Thomas Edison, and all the other successful inventers MUST have gotten gubmint grants to create what they did – right?///

dentarthurdent on July 16, 2012 at 2:36 PM

This is one huge load of offensive BS, but what I find particularly galling is Obama’s (and Warren’s) conception — and on the evidence, they really believe this — that if you ever use any public good, then the government owns you from that point, and has moral claim on anything you have or make.

jwolf on July 16, 2012 at 2:36 PM
