DWS: The Romney campaign needs to “put their big boy and big girl pants on”

posted at 5:21 pm on July 16, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

I still can’t believe this “secretive” accusation from the Democrats is even a thing.

“You know, this is a campaign for president of the United States. Mitt Romney is running for president of the United States. He and his campaign leadership need to put their big boy and big girl pants on and defend his record,” DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said on MSNBC today.

“They don’t want to show us his record. They’re running the most secretive campaign for president of a major party in history,” she added.

As I chronicled last week, painting Mitt Romney as a shady agent of potentially nefarious financial dealings with the accountability-street cred of Richard Nixon seems to be the new Obama campaign’s newest modus operandi. His campaign team completely jumped the shark and made themselves look ridiculous by publicly speculating that Mitt Romney may-or-may-not be a felon before getting the facts, but yes, it’s the Romney campaign that needs to put on their big-boy pants.

I actually agree with the sentiment that the Romney camp could step up their game a bit — but for an entirely different reason. I think Mitt Romney needs to go on the offense with his record at Bain Capital, because at the end of the day, he performed a perhaps unpleasant at its face but very vital service to the ever-moving mechanisms of free enterprise and economic growth. Perhaps this perilously close election isn’t the wisest time to work on reversing the overriding populism of the national dialogue — that’s why the Democrats are so keen on seeing Romney’s tax returns, so they can glean more fodder for their Romney-is-too-wealthy-and-out-of-touch narrative — but it’s gotta’ happen at some point or else we’re in trouble:

But really, what Mitt Romney was doing in 2000 is beside the point. Romney founded one of America’s leading private equity firms. What private equity does is take underperforming firms and make them more profitable, sometimes by closing facilities and sending operations overseas. If he can’t defend Bain’s 1999-2002 record on the merits, he can’t defend its record from 1984 to 1999 either.

Romney tries to confuse this issue by focusing on a handful of firms he was involved in founding, like Staples and Bright Horizons. Essentially, he talks about his work as though he had been in venture capital, not private equity. But an essential part of private equity is shutting down things that don’t work, or are too expensive. To succeed in private equity, you have to be comfortable being the hatchet man.

The funny thing is that, framed correctly, Romney could turn this into an asset. There are large parts of the government that don’t work or are too expensive. There is a culture in government of continuing to do things just because we’ve always done them, and continuing to employ people because we have always employed them. This doesn’t just make government expensive, it also crowds out resources that could be spent on improvements of public services.

this is all laying the ground work for the “secretive mormon” stuff they will be pulling out in September and October to further attack Romney with “emotional arguments” instead of anything based in facts or logic or the reality of our current financial mess.

Dino V on July 16, 2012 at 5:35 PM

I really don’t think it will help Romney to try explaining the business of equity capital to the average person. He should continue to compare and contrast his record to Obama’s, pointing out how horrible Obama’s is in comparison. He should also include some specifics on the foreign financial and business dealings of Obama’s big-mouth surrogates, like that knucklehead DWS. These people really are sleezy to the nines.

littleguy on July 16, 2012 at 5:37 PM

“You know, this is a campaign for president of the United States. Mitt Romney Obama is running for president of the United States. He and his campaign leadership need to put their big boy and big girl pants on and defend his record…”

Works both ways. The lyin’ socialist needs to stop whining, making excuses, blaming others, and fomenting class warfare and start 1) defending his disastrous record on the economy, 2) explaining why exactly his 200-2009 predictions and plans for the economy did not pan out and failed failed, and 3) how exactly he plans to do his own Mr. Fix-It act on the economy.

He is doing none of this. Instead the incompetent Finger-Pointer-in-Chief is stoking class warfare and attacking Romney, Bain, and capitalism.

Since BHO was never properly vetted in 2008, he has far more secrets than the public is aware of, this is conscious projection in a futile attempt to defuse the strategy being used on BHO himself by Romney’s team.

As I chronicled last week, painting Mitt Romney as a shady agent of potentially nefarious financial dealings with the accountability-street cred of Richard Nixon seems to be the new Obama campaign’s newest modus operandi.

I don’t recall Nixon running a “secretive campaign” in 1968. As I recall there was one thing the Democrats later whined about him “keeping a secret” during that run, but it turned out to be baseless.

And I certainly don’t remember Tricky Dick spending countless dollars trying to hide things about his background.

While I agree that Romney “needs to go on the offense with his record at Bain”, think about it… these pathetic insinuations are all Democrats have got to run on. That’s pretty awesome news politically. All these idiots can do is gnash their teeth and cast unwarranted, easily debunked aspersions.

Mitt needs to get out there, educate the public on what companies like Bain do, point out Bain’s success in plain terms, and call these people on their lies.

But an essential part of private equity is shutting down things that don’t work, or are too expensive. To succeed in private equity, you have to be comfortable being the hatchet man.

I don’t think he is trying to confuse the issue. I think he is trying to name companies people would have heard of so that they can identify him with those companies. He can use these companies as examples and still try to educate people about the role of private equity firms. They are not mutually exclusive.

It is a shame that the media and our school system has not done a better job of explaining all of this to people. That is really their job.

More secretive than 0bama in 2008? Just because you wish it doesn’t make it so.

As I said on an earlier thread, Mitt should make the 0bama campaign a deal:

For every year of college transcripts that 0bama releases, Mitt will release TWO years of tax returns.

‘His unfortunate remarks over the weekend show an utter lack of understanding and appreciation for the people who take a huge personal risk and work endless hours to start a business and create jobs.’
President Barack Obama said in a speech at the weekend that governments and not individuals create jobs, telling entrepreneurs: ‘If you’ve got a business – you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.’
He added: ‘You didn’t get there on your own. I’m always struck by people who think, well, it must be because I was just so smart.’ http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2174160/Obama-says-wealthy-ARENT-responsible-success.html

And as a religion-hating Democrat, you might want to re-think your sig. “Gumby’s” creator Art Clokey also did the religious claymation show “Davey and Goliath” at about the same time, and his son has continued that series.

Thanks for playing!

I agree with Erika, in that it would be great to see Romney go on the offensive and shove the fact that he performed a vital service to the nations economy while Obama has done nothing but get in the way and hamper that economy right down Obama’s throat.

However, I think that tactically, strategically, its best to keep things as close to the vest as possible until the debates. Why give Team Obama any clue leading into the debates about what specific attacks or information Team Romney might have stored up for those occasions?

I think that, saddled as they are with Biden who will be debating whomever Romney ultimately selects as his choice for Vice President and, so, gritting their teeth at the thought of the potential and almost guaranteed gaffes from Biden, and with very little hard information regarding exactly what Team Romney knows or plans to use in the debates, Team Obama has to be sleepless, pacing the floor in the wee hours of the night.

In any campaign, what the opposition doesn’t know they cannot effectively prepare for.. but will fret over endlessly. Pressure applied over time can cause mistakes.

There’s no real need for Romney to move precipitously with an attack at this time. He’s tied Obama in the polls…despite Obama’s resorting to hurling baseless allegations including calling Romney a felon. Obama has, in so doing, revealed himself to be nearly hysterical in his attempts to defame, malign, and, thus, damage Romney. Its an insight into just how desperate his team has become… and its only JULY.

I think the application of steady pressure… and the sense of just not knowing and thus being unprepared… is beginning to tell on Obama.

I say keep up that pressure. LET ‘EM SWEAT.

And “Wealthy” is code for “Whitey” so why haven’t Mitt’s proxies jumped on that?

Romney ought to release his college transcripts and applications, then tell BHO to put up or shut up.

Obviously the IRS has found nothing wrong with Romney’s tax returns, so this is just a distraction.

However, our mysterious pRes has put up and EO to block any release of his college info. So what goes here??

O has also blocked folks looking at his passport records. What goes here ??

O has also not disclosed medical records. What is the big scar on the back of his head?

If anyone wants to talk ancient felonies, let’s arrest O for cocaine snorting in his youth.

I’m telling you, make fun of them, especially Obama and they’ll puff up like over done pastry.

When they’re blue in the face and sputtering incoherently come back to using their own words against them and splatter the libs with facts.

They know they’re lying, purposely, to get them to blush so the public can see it, they just have to hit the right way, and believe me until they get themselves all blown up about it, they’re going to be like a dog with a bone, they won’t stop, they believe lying is a winner for the democrat party.

Theirs only one way to win this false accusation exploit and that’s to act like their old buddies and ridicule the hell out of them.

Schadenfreude on July 16, 2012 at 6:36 PM

Erika…Erika…
You are falling for the trap. “It’s a TRAP!”

Obama is WANTING Romney to talk about HIS record and not the Presidents.

Romney needs to HIT BACK HARD on EVERYTHING that does NOT WORK in an Obama Administration and not sit for weeks talking about Bain and Romney’s personal taxes. WE should not be encouraging this either by even in engaging in these conversations.

This is such a trap by the Dems and we all should it for what it is…it is to keep us NOT talking about Obama’s record. :o)

g2825m on July 16, 2012 at 5:48 PM

THIS. All they can do is complain about how mean old rich racist (he says Obamacare, which is printed on t-shirt Team Obama sells so that makes him racist) Romney will *not* allow them to dictate how he runs his campaign. Why can’t they have that nice accommodating McCain guy back? If Romney starts listening to morons like Bill Kristol & gives Obama want he wants, then we can truly start writing the funeral dirge for this election (and this country).

Explain what private equity does? WTF? Private equity didn’t get us 23 million unemployed and 42 straight months of unemployment at more than 8%. The Dems & the MSM are the only people who seem to be unaware that Obama has been the POTUS for the last 3.5 years. Furthermore, you are talking about explaining things to people who do not understand how Romney could no longer be managing Bain & still *own his investment* in Bain. Although grant it, the people in Obama’s camp do *understand* it, but they are willfully misrepresenting it anyway — you sure as heck are wasting your breath “explaining” anything to them, as they will take whatever you say & twist it. Look at what they are doing with Romney’s demand for an apology — he didn’t whine like they say, he said it was disgusting and Obama needed to reign his people in, but he further said that this was a pathetic distraction by the Obama campaign because they don’t want to talk about the real issues & can’t run on their record. Notice how they ignored all that & are just claiming that Romney is “whining for an apology.” Pfft.

Furthermore, you can’t explain anything to them because the underlying basis to all this is they actually do think people who are successful in business are the “problem” not the “solution.” That’s exactly what Obama said in his speech in VA Friday & that is exactly the message in Obama’s new attack ad against Romney “Firms” (where he is singing America the Beautiful — it ends with “Romney isn’t the solution. He’s the problem.”) You can’t get socialist commie collectivists to *understand* or *acknowledge* how private equity works — they see the fact that there is privately held property in this world as what’s wrong with it! That’s their core belief.

What Romney should say (and in fact what he does say out on the trial, but it isn’t “sound bite-ish” enough) is: “Instead of demonizing businesses that downsize or send jobs overseas, the President should look at what is wrong with the policies in this country that cause businesses to have to downsize and send jobs overseas in order to turn a profit & stay in business. Pres. Obama has shown he is incapable of understanding how to fix those policies, which his last 3.5 years in office has shown.”

Has it never occurred to anyone in the DNC that Wasserman Shultz is the least photogenic person they could find to put in front of a camera to represent them? I keep expecting her to go off into a cheap infomercial appeal about foreclosed real estate in Florida.
