Open thread: Sunday talk shows

posted at 8:01 am on July 15, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Today we’ll see a somewhat eclectic mix of guests on the morning talk shows, with no particular dominant theme.  The two presidential candidates have surrogates out in force but are themselves otherwise occupied. Senior Romney adviser and longtime Republican strategist Ed Gillespie is the only one doing double duty, making appearances on both Meet the Press and State of the Union.  Most of the surrogate attention will probably focus on Obama’s attack on Romney over Bain Capital, but we’ll also get a little veepstakes buzz with Paul Ryan and Kelly Ayotte — two presumed contenders — as featured guests.  Fox and CNN go a little governor-heavy today, so expect some debate over the resistance to Medicaid expansion on both shows.

In the middle of all the political fat-chewing taking place today, the segment that seems the most interesting to me will be Bob Costas’ appearance onMeet the Press to discuss the fallout from the Freeh report in the Penn State-Jerry Sandusky scandal.  The most inexplicable is Rahm Emanuel on This Week.  Shouldn’t he be focusing on Chicago’s troubles rather than Obama’s?  Andrew Malcolm wonders about that too:

He’s Obama’s embattled finance chair, Obama’s former chief of staff, a former representative from Chicago’s North Side, a former Bill Clinton finance chair and White House aide. But apparently he’s solved all of the windy city’s problems with money, street shootings and schools so he can continue his heavy load of national political work for South Sider Obama.

  • This Week (ABC): Rahm Emanuel, Senator Kelly Ayotte
  • Face the Nation (CBS): Rep. Paul Ryan, Stephanie Cutter, Kevin Madden
  • Meet the Press (NBC): Ed Gillespie, Senators Dick Durbin and Jon Kyl, Bob Costas
  • State of the Union (CNN): Ed Gillespie, David Axelrod, Governors Bob McDonnell and Deval Patrick
  • Fox News Sunday (Fox): Governors Terry Branstad and Rick Scott, Karl Rove and Joe Trippi

Romney Team Grade for Sunday Morning Shows 7/15/2012

Luckily nobody watches these things…

sandee on July 15, 2012 at 12:42 PM

BAINERS
This is what we should start calling the political & media hacks who are obsessing over Mitt’s time at Bain.

SheVee on July 15, 2012 at 12:57 PM

BAINERS, duh!

All you COMPLAINERS who were foolish enough to vote for this flawed candidate in the primary pat yourself on the back for giving the worse president in the history of this country an opening and a chance for re-election.

You wizards of smart can take your complainin somewhere else.

Dumb-Ø has a record now and instead of aggressively attacking your flawed candidate is on defense, defense, defense. Pathetic.

You wanted this flawed candidate, you own it, shut up.

A vote for Etch-a-sketch in the primary was a vote for Obama in the general

Be careful what you wish for, you just might get it.

Jayrae on July 15, 2012 at 1:20 PM

…have you noticed the expression on his face and the fear in his eyes when he has to answer questions too defend what JugEars is doing?…

KOOLAID2 on July 15, 2012 at 10:46 AM

I used to think he tried to be moderate. I don’t think that any more. When he fills in for Bill I have to turn it off. He has the left on and lets them go on and on and on. He cuts off the right – with we have to go now, all the while he lets the idiots go on and on with obama’s talking points.
I just can’t believe he is so “in the tank” for the left after what they did to him at npr.
But, Yes, I have noticed his change in facial expression.

Bambi on July 15, 2012 at 1:30 PM

Sure glad Romney solidified his communication team by bringing on Kevin Madden. LOL.

This guy is your typical squish Repub. While Obama’s Cutter rolls out all the leftwing lies in machine gun fashion, Madden sounded like an intern for a law firm – on his heels and ill informed with legalize fine print.

yes, genius, coz Santorum or Gingrich or that 9-1-1 (pun intended) tragicomic character wouldn’t have had to defend themselves, they would have given a pass by the Obama campaign, coz, err…yeah, right…take your chill pill, or anti-depressant meds, whichever one helps most and stay away from commenting on forums, you come across as such a spaz…

Kevin, “squish” is the correct term for most of Romney’s surrogates lately. Ed Gillespie did slightly better than most of Mitt’s supporters appearing today. Slightly better is not good enough if your surrogate is the guy who runs your campaign (which is doomed, Mitt, if you don’t get it going). I know Mitt is preparing for the long game, but the word “felon” tends to stick in the minds of people who might be unsophisticated. Look what they elected 4 years ago.

It’s go time, Mitt – fire the timid and get attack dogs who are not having it from any liberal. No more Mr. Nice Guy. Obama called you a felon – either go on every show and answer the charges yourself, which you did well earlier this week, or start handing out pink slips to the aides and surrogates who are going into the lion’s den and acting like lambs who are about to be slaughtered.

I’m finally hearing about the welfare work rule issue on Fox News Sunday (with Brit, yay). I hardly heard a word about it this morning. Ugh.

Philly on July 15, 2012 at 2:06 PM

Karl Rove up next on Fox News Sunday.

Philly on July 15, 2012 at 2:15 PM

Yikes…Romney surrogates on the defensive and not answering questions for another week. Swiss bank accounts and tax returns issue not going away. Release them and be done with it. Unless there is something really fishy, release them and everybody will forget about them in a couple of weeks. Mitt’s dad had the right idea.

Romney is being set up for the October surprise on this one. I am not sure if everybody has been following this, but the Swiss government has coughed up the names of tax cheats for the first time this year.

http://www.nestmann.com/amended-tax-treaty-effectively-ends-swiss-bank-secrecy-for-u-s-clients/

Even if Romney is doing everything on the up-and-up, expect some big name “Rich Americans busted for being tax cheats” stories to pop-up near the election. Swiss Bank Accounts = Tax Cheats will be burned into voters brains. Romney is walking into this trap perfectly. Brilliant political plan by Obama and team.

ZippyZ on July 15, 2012 at 2:17 PM

Joe Trippi says he is surprised that Romney’s campaign was not ready for the “felon” attack for his status during the Olympic period. He’s right.

Get ready for everything, Mitt.

If you wonder why 40 plus of the voters still support the administration, look at these surrogates.

Even on the opening of the 2 PM show on NBC, the Romney guy couldn’t answer whether outsourcing was not a good thing.

Somebody tell them about simple and direct answers like “No.”

And on whether President Romney was responsible for the acts of Bain, how about “He ran a company at that time, not the US and if you understood economics and business, you would know that they must chase after returns for their employees and shareholders.

Prior administrations and other elected representatives enacted policies that every business lived with and continues to live with despite two years of total Democrat Party control and the present occupant of the White House.

How did they allow the continued maintenance of a system that results in travesties like the Olympic uniforms?”

Having tried to create US jobs, I could sure tell the suckers off! One of you guys send Romney a resume and call me if you need me.

IlikedAUH2O on July 15, 2012 at 2:24 PM

Gutter politics is right.

Philly on July 15, 2012 at 2:24 PM

Goldwater, you’re right.

Here’s a good answer to all of the attacks: No, that is a lie; you are lying, and we have proven that you are lying.

Philly on July 15, 2012 at 2:27 PM

The 0 administration will destroy Romney. It is what they always do.

There is no way to get rid of them. Heavy, Heavy sighs for the fate of our country.

No, he’s wrong. The felon charge is so blatently stupid that only the Obama team could have imagined it.

LASue on July 15, 2012 at 3:22 PM

Sue, you’re correct. But Romney should be ready for the lowest-level rung of dirty Chicago tricks that Obama can drudge out of the mud.

Romney needs to tell Obama to put up or shut up on the felon issue. Maybe Romney’s folks are talking to Blago or Tony Rezko about what they know about Duh One.

Philly on July 15, 2012 at 4:15 PM

No one – no one is watching, just a few more than that are paying attention and caring. Obamy is sliding everywhere.
Move along – when the economic numbers keep falling the O is toast. All Romney has to do is not kill babies on live television.

Philly on July 15, 2012 at 4:15 PM

Well, Philly, then they might as well talk to another felon Larry Sinclair who even wrote a book about the felon Obama who was using cocaine as late as 1999 and probably into the 2000′s if u follow the trail.

LASue on July 15, 2012 at 3:22 PM

Gotta be prepared for the stupid and outrageous and to roll around in the mud with these gators.

“President Obama, we have it on good authority that you are still using cocaine. It would certainly explain your decision-making that seems drug-induced because its so irrational. And then there’s all that chit-chat about your sexual orientation…not a very nice thing to do your family, for sure.”

That’ll tape their mouths shut.

gracie on July 15, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Obama has associated with so many felons, lol. John Sununu was right. Not to mention Bill Ayers.

Philly on July 15, 2012 at 5:26 PM

gracie, I’ve heard the chitchat about the orientation. omg. someone had the naughty pics of his mom linked here on a thread. man oh man. they wanted mud….

BTW 2016 The Movie previewed here this week. Highly recommend. Well made in a matter-of-fact way. All independents and non-koolaidholics should see. Very detailed on why Obama is who he is. Scary!!

HoustonRight on July 15, 2012 at 10:41 AM

Thank you very much for your review of the movie Obama’s America: 2016, HoustonRight!

http://2016themovie.com/

I have my calendar marked for the July 27th nationwide opening of this movie.

I read the book that the movie is based on, The Roots of Obama’s Rage by Dinesh D’Souza, and found it to be both insightful about the foundation of Obama’s anti-colonialist beliefs and quite frightening.

The more we all learn about Obama, the better! We all need to be prepared to personally influence as many voters as possible before election day!

wren on July 15, 2012 at 5:41 PM

Who cares about the Sunday morning gabfests except political junkies who are keeping score and the TV networks trying to sell advertising? They’re preaching to their choirs and does anyone think for a minute that based on what some spin arttist says Sunday morning I’m going to change my position? Never. Neither are you or the deranged on the other side of the aisle.

What works is TV ads, like are running steadily out of Tampa on MSM, against Bill Nelson and Barack Hussein Obama telling the couch potatoes out there that Ogabe and Nelson are liars, cheats & thieves – taking your future and flushing it down the drain. Send them money, if you can, to get the message to more of the MSM dependent class for news.
