Obama: “If you’ve got health insurance, you’re not getting hit by a tax”

posted at 2:31 pm on July 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Is the individual mandate in ObamaCare a tax?  No, said Nancy Pelosi.  No, said DNC chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz, even if the IRS is the only agency that can enforce it.  No, said Jay Carney, or at least, “it is not a broad-based tax.”

Of course, Mitt Romney called it a tax — eventually.  Yesterday, his opponent in the election weighed in on the issue, and … have we reached a consensus?

“By the way, if you’ve got health insurance, you’re not getting hit by a tax,” President Obama said. “The only thing that’s happening to you is that you now have more security because insurance companies can’t drop you when you get sick.”

That sounds so sweet, you’d never guess that the CBO estimates that the government will raise $54 billion in revenue from this tax in its eight years after the mandate takes effect, almost all of it from the middle class.  (Remember, that’s exactly what the CBO projected we would save through federal tort reform in malpractice cases over a decade, which Democrats rejected as too extreme.) Revenues increase rather than decrease during that eight-year run, too.  Why?  Many employers will stop offering health-care coverage, throwing employees into the individual policy market.  Businesses will pay less in fines than they do in insurance premiums, which means that many middle-class earners will face the same choice of paying for expensive individual plans or paying a fine tax instead.

So not only will some middle-class families get dropped by insurance companies, thanks to an opt-out by employers, they’ll be paying a tax on top of it, thanks to ObamaCare.  Glad to see President Obama has made that clear.

Gotta PASS the bill to see whats in it!

TX-96 on July 14, 2012 at 5:12 PM

I think this is kind of what we did with this President didn’t we?

We had to elect Obama to “find out what was in it?”…and we are left wanting BIG TIME!

This time around I am all about HOPING for CHANGE!

g2825m on July 14, 2012 at 5:14 PM

LIE! I’ve got health insurance, and Obamacare is going to hit me with a number of taxes.

In many countries that implement socialist healthcare, doctors have had to be forced to stay inside the government system by various means. That’s the way we are headed if the manure pile that is Obamacare survives.

slickwillie2001 on July 14, 2012 at 5:13 PM

So I guess the doctors themselves will get hit with their own “tax” to force them to remain as doctors AND they’ll get with the “other tax” for their own insurance…I mean in Obama’s world no one rides for free…errrr…I guess about 1,389 corporations do. I stand corrected.

Some people never need health care all of their lives, others don’t need anyone to pay for theirs and don’t need insurance, but they all pay?

Just how the hell is that Constitutional?

Speakup on July 14, 2012 at 5:35 PM

It’s almost like this law was designed to destroy the current system we have in order to create cries for the Government to “do something!”.

Mord on July 14, 2012 at 2:46 PM

No, it’s not almost like that. It’s exactly that.

Syzygy on July 14, 2012 at 5:42 PM

It’s a trap. It’s a tax.

SparkPlug on July 14, 2012 at 5:46 PM

Yeah? What about those nineteen other taxes hidden in the law?

RebeccaH on July 14, 2012 at 5:47 PM

There isn’t any argument here.

It’s not a broad base everyone gets hit with it tax, at least not the part he’s talking about. It’s a penalty. An unconstitutional punishment for not taking part of something the government demands you take part in.

I don’t care if that idiot calls it a tax or not, it’s punitive, resulting from an unconstitutional mandate. Period.

Lipstick, pig, and all that.

I forgot to add this for the second time….

if they just send a medical bill to those that use medical services and not allow that bill to EVER expire from their record until it’s paid, I bet a bit more people would either pay up or get some sort of insurance.

But it’s hardly the problem. The problem is the bloated costs of medical treatment and scripts in the first place. Remove unnecessary regulations and implement some actual torte reform (my trial lawyer hates my view of this) and perhaps the costs will come down. Stab the bloody unions in the eye and it’ll come down more. Allow cross-state groups and the cost will come down more.

Mandate? Pffft. Blow me.

“By the way, if you’ve got health insurance, you’re not getting hit by a tax,” President Obama said. “The only thing that’s happening to you is that you now have more security because insurance companies can’t drop you when you get sick.”

Hmm. So, by extension, if you do not have health insurance, then you are getting hit by a tax. Which would include people making less than $250,000 per year, I’d wager. From a law that President Obama himself championed. Which would mean that he lied to the American people. Because he said that if you made less than $250,000 per year, you would not see any of your taxes raised under his plan. He didn’t say “unless you’re doing something we disapprove of”.

Pork-Chop on July 14, 2012 at 6:28 PM

Sure I’m getting hit by a tax–and outrage–if I’m being forced to pay for health coverage that I don’t need or want, which will be part of the one-size-fits-all basic policies, i.e., I’m a young single male or a woman past child-bearing years and I’m paying for maternity coverage and prostate exams, or I’m paying for someone else’s viagra or birth control or abortions. These points of the ObamascareTAX aren’t getting much discussion.

One of the biggest problems is illegal aliens using ERs for sniffles. They can and will walk away from bills. If the bill is big enough they just go back to Mexico. They can also pick up another identity easy enough if they were using a real one in the first place.

No Obamacare solution changes this, because nothing is as cheap as ‘free’.

slickwillie2001 on July 14, 2012 at 6:48 PM

when you turn 65 medicare and medicaid are mandatory. they deduct $100.00 a month out of your social security check each month. If you do not want it because you had some thing better that you may have worked 40 years four then you can op out BUT the take away ALL of your social security benefits and give you nothing.Isn’t this just the same thing everyone is talking about just a little further down the age road.

Now, if you want to understand why Steny Hoyer said this:

“The president initially has it about right, at the ($250,000 level). But I would be prepared to go lower at some time in the future than that.”

Then scroll down to the last graph and you’ll understand:

Big Government robs the middle class for the same reason that Willie Sutton robbed banks…that’s where the money is!

And, that’s why IT is coming for YOU eventually. There are simply not enough rich people to pay for a country of freeloaders.

His lips are moving again. Got an email from my senator, Tester, spouting about the wonderfulness of the new healthcare and how it will strengthen MC. I’ll even get a free physical outta this deal. Don’t know how he knew I was on MC so he could tailor the message to me. Guess he doesn’t know everyone who goes on MC at age 65 gets a free physical that first year. After that, the MC physical consists of a questionnaire asking you how you feel and if you have access to food. He’s such a tool.

Domment of the Day™

Steve Eggleston on July 14, 2012 at 11:11 PM

Obama: “If you’ve got health insurance, you’re not getting hit by a tax”

That’s assuming you were able to keep the health insurance you liked instead of having it either legislated out of existence or having your employer decide to pay the business version of the ObamaTax instead of a portion of your premium. Lots of luck with that.

Steve Eggleston on July 14, 2012 at 11:13 PM

My husband and I have a disabled child and have only Tricare, the military insurance plan. We have already lost coverage for eye care for our child, even though she is legally blind and would go completely blind without proper eye care. So of course we must come up with the money even though we are both now unemployed. Obummer is planning to completely get rid of Tricare if he is reelected (although Congress may not let him get away with that). If Tricare goes away we will then have no health insurance. It will be just like my retiree husband had never even served in the military. We have been told that then we can “buy” a plan from the exchanges. With what? We are already reluctantly having to accept handouts from relatives to try to keep our bills paid. Our copays have already increased so much that my husband and I are talking about not refilling our own prescriptions so that we can afford our daughter’s prescriptions.

sherrimae on July 14, 2012 at 11:28 PM

Employers are going to pay a per contract tax next year for employemnt based healthcare – that cost will be pushed to the employee. He is a liar. But we all knew that already.

Zomcon JEM on July 14, 2012 at 11:59 PM

In Europe, the payment of the various mandatory social-themed insurances is deemed as a tax. While the system varies country by country, a relatively common system is that there are a number of mandatory insurances that employers have to buy for their employees, although sometimes the insurance is bought by the employees themselves or are required to be bought by self-employed persons. If you do not buy the insurance you are usually hit with an increased insurance payment as a penalty.

Wolfmoon on July 14, 2012 at 5:57 PM

So, it doesn’t matter politically if it’s called a tax or not? If, as you say, there’s no argument, explain then why there are still people on both sides of the political aisle trying to say 0bamaCare’s mandate isn’t a tax.

Clearly, by the very definition of “tax”, 0bamaCare is a tax – some people, for reasons they themselves should articulate, are just choosing to not factor in that a penalty can serve a dual-purpose by being a tax as well

Bizarro No. 1 on July 15, 2012 at 6:30 AM

“One of the traditional methods of imposing statism or socialism on a people, has been by way of medicine. It’s very easy to disguise a medical program as a humanitarian project — most people are a little reluctant to oppose anything that suggests medical care for people who possibly can’t afford it. Now, the American people, if you put it to them about socialized medicine and gave them a chance to choose, would unhesitatingly vote against it.”
-Ronald Reagan

And we will. This is not over.

Health care penalties and The Law. Could you just cover the total story on this . There is nothing new
in the Obamacare mandates. The people reporting on this are all under 65 and don’t seem to understand
what happens when you reach that magic age. For nearly 40 years I worked at a job so that I would
have the best medical retirement benefits known to mankind. BUT! When I turned 65 our government
said that I must have Medicare (THE MANDATE) and I must pay $100.00/month (THE TAX)
deducted from my Social security check each month. If I elect to op out of the Medicare (THE
OPTION) then I forfeit ALL Social Security Payments (THE PENALTY) for the rest of my life.

How is this any different then Obamacare?

Medicare Costs more and pays less and covers less then the plan I had.

jpcpt03 on July 15, 2012 at 1:59 PM

Yet ANOTHER Obama lie!

There is a provision in Obamacare that taxes ‘cadillac’ policies.

Obama is a serial liar.

Freddy on July 15, 2012 at 5:29 PM

Obama: “If you’ve got health insurance, you’re not getting hit by a tax”

This is among Obama’s BIGGEST lies!!!

Useless (to most people) coverages are piled onto every insurance policy because of politically-motivated government edicts. This drives up costs and wastes medical resources.

There is also the not-so-small matter of the THEFT of half a trillion dollars from Medicare. Obama wants to pretend that this theft is somehow a “savings”…but the truth is that it’s just a theft. People will die because of this.

landlines on July 15, 2012 at 7:36 PM

What on earth is this lying bastard talking about? He is not my president. Why can’t the news media just tell the truth? Why is there no news outlet that will help fill in some of the blanks? Why can’t the good people of this country realize what is happening to them? They are just a flock of handout dependent sheep that are being led to the slaughterhouse by our Judas Goat Media.

So not only will some middle-class families get dropped by insurance companies, thanks to an opt-out by employers, they’ll be paying a tax on top of it, thanks to ObamaCare. Glad to see President Obama has made that clear.

While it’s good to see Hot Air laying out the facts in clear and simple language, it would be even better to see a Romney or RNC campaign ad doing this.
