WaPo: Three Pinocchios for Romney-is-a-felon attack

posted at 9:21 am on July 13, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Only three?  Glenn Kessler gave Team Obama a 25% discount, in part because the SEC documents signed by Mitt Romney might suggest that his financial disclosures could use a little cleaning up.  Overall, though, the Washington Post factchecker sticks to his January assessment of Romney’s involvement in Bain — and suggests that Team Obama needs a lot more cleaning up:

Meanwhile, the weight of evidence suggests that Romney did in fact end active management of Bain in 1999. He stated that in a federal disclosure form he signed, under threat of criminal penalties. He said he was a “former employee” in a state disclosure form. A state commission concluded 10 years ago that he did, indeed, leave Bain in 1999.  Investors in Bain funds were told he was not part of the management team.

The SEC documents, especially the ones Romney signed, do raise some questions. One can certainly argue that because Romney did not fully extricate himself from Bain till after his Olympic sojourn ended, he should bear some responsibility for what happened in that period. But that is an entirely different matter than suggesting that he is a potential criminal. It is more of a PR problem, which the Obama campaign is trying to exploit to build a larger case that Romney is secretive.

We were tempted to award this claim Four Pinocchios, but the documents with his signature leave some room for inquiry.

Still, if the Obama campaign wants to put its money where its mouth is, it should immediately lodge a complaint about Romney’s financial disclosure form, filed just last year, rather than try to mislead people about potential violations in relatively unimportant SEC documents.

Kessler also points out that Democrats in 2002 tried making theopposite argument — that Romney had not only left Bain in 1999, but had also effectively left Massachusetts as well to work on the Salt Lake City Olympics.  They insisted that Romney had become a resident of Utah, not Massachusetts, and was therefore ineligible to run for governor.  The Ballot Commission agreed with Democrats at that time that Romney had left Bain Capital on February 11, 1999, after having been employed in Massachusetts from 1975 to 1999.

Furthermore, the commission noted that while Romney returned to Massachusetts for social and business events, none of the events had anything to do with Bain.  Romney attended board meetings for Staples, but Romney sat on that board, as well as others.  No mention was made of any Bain events or meetings attended by Romney — and in that case, Romney would have had an incentive to play up his involvement at Bain, in order to establish eligibility for the office he was seeking.

In other words, the accusation that Romney is an uncharged felon is pure demagogic tripe — which Team Obama seems anxious to deploy in large quantities these daysTeam Romney wants an apology:

Mitt Romney’s campaign manager Matt Rhoades has released a statement calling on President Barack Obama to apologize for his campaign’s attacks speculating that Romney could be accused of a felony following today’s Boston Globe report examining Romney’s separation from Bain Capital.

“President Obama’s campaign hit a new low today when one of its senior advisers made a reckless and unsubstantiated charge to reporters about Mitt Romney that was so over the top that it calls into question the integrity of their entire campaign,” Rhoades said. “President Obama ought to apologize for the out-of-control behavior of his staff, which demeans the office he holds. Campaigns are supposed to be hard fought, but statements like those made by Stephanie Cutter belittle the process and the candidate on whose behalf she works.”

Don’t hold your breath, but do take heart — if this is all they have left in July, Team Obama is completely out of gas.

Here’s my concern:

Sometime down the road, probably in late October, someone from the Obama camp will flippantly say in front of reporters something like, “It doesn’t bother me so much that Mitt Romney called the President the N-word in the green room after the last debate, what bothers me is that he continues to imply that Mr. Obama is ‘over his head’ in dealing with the economy. That’s just not the kind of rhetoric we need in this election.”

What’s that old saying — a lie can travel around the world before the truth has time to put its boots on – or something to that effect.

The Obama thugs know what they’re doing. Put the lie out there, and it will get covered (especially by Obama’s handmaidens in the MSM), and a lot of people will hear it and believe it. By the time the truth is told, people will not listen, having already made up their minds to believe the lie.

It’s actually quite breath taking, this blatant in-your-face complete bs line of attack that Obama’s campaign is embracing on whatever piece of mud they think is flingable. Andrea Mitchell’s recent spanking by John Sununu comes to mind as an example of how easy it is to call them out on their bs by presenting basic, y’know, facts. Get ready for a lot more of this as various ‘news’ outlets take a flyer on challenging the campaign surrogates instead of acting as them.

All Obama’s team has to offer are bald faced liars who bring outrageous outrage into play whenever their narrative is questioned. That dog don’t hunt anymore folks.

I don’t even think it’s that.

I think some overzealous campaign staffer “discovered” this, and then the campaign ran it without bothering to check to see if Romney had really lied about anything.

You know what Obama does when he makes a mistake – he doubles down instead of admitting any errors. I’ve always felt that campaigns reflect the candidates they are working for, so I think the Obama campaign chose to “double down” rather than admit any error here.

Predictable Insanity from the O’bama Fluffers in the WaPo Comments section. 1,000 so far and counting.

Mr. Kessler provides a lot of excuses for Romney and his signing of SEC documents.

(Top Comment; recommended by 12 fellow O’bots)

Birthers went on for years based only on a fevered imagination. There are SEC documents showing an inconsistency in what Romney says and did, but conservatives are already in full victim mode.

That is the curious thing about Kessler…. his selectivity regarding which arguments he addresses.

For some reason, he only seems to focus on arguments that favor Romney. Yes, CEO role can be defined in many ways, as Kessler states. But the role of the President is not so flexible – and Kessler’s silence on this is profound.

Kessler is obviously a ridiculous partisan hack or being paid by Mythor both to lie for him. He’s one person so who cares about his partisan selff-serving opinion. We don’t need Kessler to tell us real evidence of fraud is real evidence of fraud, when we can read.

It’ funny how Kesler always bends over backwards to exonerate Myth’s ations but bends over like a gymnast to go againt BO, pathetic partisan bigot.

Romney is unfit to be president. His financial dealings clearly demonstrate his disdain for America.

we know which fact checkers are in Myth’s pockets. WaPo itself posted the outsourcing story which kessler goes against, he’s a1%er defending fellow 1%, like much of the media is protecting 1% interests beausetheir greed knows no bounds.

And finally, this English Major checks in:

BUT, do not forget, that Romney is a PATHOLOGICAL LAIR ever since he got into this campaign.

lol, you can’t make up this kind of Stupid, kids. You can only be taught it in Democrat-run Public Schools.

I think the Obama team smears can only get worse !!

My biggest worry is what the Obama Team will do at the election booth in November.

Why do they want to keep dead people on the roles? Why are they so strongly opposed to voter id when they are soliciting these same folks for food stamps with an id? There must be some big scheme like Obama used to screw up and win the caucuses in ’08. And remember folks going from polling place to polling place on a bus in OH to cast provisional ballots. Anything to screw up/confuse the system. I think they ought to do away with provisional ballots. If some one can’t pre-register to vote and show up at the right place, they ought to loose their vote. Conversely, any polling place ought to be able to call “voter central” and find out where a persons polling place is so they can tell them.

bob77 on July 13, 2012 at 9:56 AM

Only 3 shows that WaPo badly wants this to be true.

Anyone who knows even a little about corporate law and securities regulation, knows that the Boston Globe and the Obama campaign flat out lied. No if’s, and’s or but’s about it.

Lets be perfectly clear here. Bain is represented by some of the best corporate lawyers in the country, not to mention their in-house lawyers are also top notch. These people signed off on what happened between 1999 and 2002, and almost certainly re-confirmed for Bain that what happened was 100% proper and legal (that is why the response came several hours later). And even a basic knowledge of SEC regulation shows that there was nothing improper in what happened at Bain, and is not an evil conspiracy to hide something.

Now, I get that this is designed for the 50% of Americans who are low-informaiton voters and will not research the topic. I get that Obama and his MSM supporters simply hope that this resonates with even a very small portion of undecided low information voters. But even judging this by that standard, such tactics are a cheap shot.

changer1701 on July 13, 2012 at 10:00 AM

I get the “this is war” thing. But even in actual war, there are limitations to what is tolerated. In other words, you dont kill unarmed woman and children, uou dont shoot enemy soldiers that have laid down their guns and are surrendering, etc…

What the left is doing in this election is outside the bounds of decency. Flat out lying and calling someone a felon is disgraceful, even by the low standards that liberals usually set.

milcus on July 13, 2012 at 10:09 AM

I hate to say this but I agree with everybody they are going to come up with something even more vile for October.

Desperation is a scary thing in liberals.

gophergirl on July 13, 2012 at 10:00 AM

I’ve been saying this for months – look for a Herman Cain redux.

Flora Duh on July 13, 2012 at 10:10 AM

They haven’t announced that Romney has a gay family member, like John Kerry did in trying to out Mary Cheney.

Kjeil on July 13, 2012 at 10:00 AM

I don’t think even O’s team could be that stupid, after the allowance of gays to serve openly in the military and Oblowme saying he favors SSM. They’d lose more people from their side for making the accusation more of a slur than might keep Pubs from voting for Mitt.

Liam on July 13, 2012 at 10:10 AM

Do you think people care about what WAPO thinks? Soundbites during elections work. Heck, Team Obama may very well know these are false. That’s not the point. They are forcing everyone to use the words “Romney” and “felon” together. That was always the objective. Mission: Accomplished. Politics is war.

inthemiddle on July 13, 2012 at 9:53 AM

The political value of this is dubious but least you can admit that liberals lie and have no morals.

My money is on the “discovery” that Romney had something to do with the Penn State cover-up.

There is a term that would put this to rest if Republicans will start using it in reference to those spreading this stuff – Bainer’s

OMG – talking points memo!!11!

Meanwhile the left could care less about all the corruption and fraud going on in the Obama administration.

gwelf on July 13, 2012 at 10:12 AM

This is chicago thugery at it’s best (worst)! What in the world would give anyone an idea that he was anything but a criminal?

Bambi on July 13, 2012 at 10:13 AM

If you’re a fan of Obama, at least your guy is on the attack.
Hapless Mitt is continually on the defensive.

A state commission concluded 10 years ago that he did, indeed, leave Bain in 1999. Investors in Bain funds were told he was not part of the management team.

…tomorrow the LSM will report that Romney had a wet fart on November 23, 1995 and left a skid mark in his underpants…and they are unrepentingly concerned that he won’t be able to physically perform the demanding job of the Presidency, without soiling himself.

KOOLAID2 on July 13, 2012 at 10:16 AM

Obama gets us 5 trillion more in debt in 3.5 years, his stimulus program was a massive transfer of wealth to his cronies – particularly the unions, and same for his “investments” in green energy but the manner and timeline of when Romney left Bain is a big deal?

Liberals are outing themselves more than usual as immoral hacks.

Conversely, any polling place ought to be able to call “voter central” and find out where a persons polling place is so they can tell them.

KenInIL on July 13, 2012 at 9:52 AM

That actually happened to me after a recent move. It took the poll worker 2 minutes to find out I needed to vote at my old voting place.

Well then, Obama Cokehead should be the Ronmey campaign’s next line of attack. Is he still using? We know he still smokes. Does he still choom his way around the Oval office? I mean who cares about the truth, right? The point is to put the words Obama and drug addict together. Too bad, I think he still snorts and wouldn’t have any trouble putting two & two together in that regard.

JAM on July 13, 2012 at 10:18 AM

You know what would be a felony and scandal? If Romney sold guns to Mexican drug lords that were used to kill Mexicans and federal agents.

Romney can now run ads with one of the most well known liberal rags (WAPO) calling Obama a desperate liar…

I’m sure anybody not brain dead (aka a liberal)won’t be too impressed by that..

Meanwhile, the weight of evidence suggests that Romney did in fact end active management of Bain in 1999. He stated that in a federal disclosure form he signed, under threat of criminal penalties.
interesting.

Attention: Dbag

I’m fairly sure still owning a share of a company would be considered “business ties,” the point is…he wasn’t making the decisions anymore.

Del Dolemonte on July 13, 2012 at 10:24 AM

This is not a bug, but a feature of obamanation. Obama has always campaigned by finding enemies and demonizing people.
He is, after all, Pres. Divisive.
locomotivebreath1901 on July 13, 2012 at 9:45 AM

So true. The only job Obama has known was being a “community organizer.” His job was to sow dissent by hyping up discord and turning this aggrieved group against a demonized ‘enemy.’
It’s the only skill the one -trick -pony Obama knows, so of course he has used it freely and with confidence.

marybel on July 13, 2012 at 10:28 AM

Kessler also points out that Democrats in 2002 tried making theopposite argument — that Romney had not only left Bain in 1999, but had also effectively left Massachusetts as well to work on the Salt Lake City Olympics.

This isn’t exactly a new tactic for them. “Its’s not a tax. It’s a tax. It’s not a tax again.”

You’re such an idiot.

Romney returned home to Massachusetts for Staples board meetings. Staples had received an investment from Bain Capital years prior, but was and is a distinct business entity from Bain Capital.

And, for the record, “maintained business ties” is not the same thing as having a role in operational or investment decisions.

Why are you so dumb?
