CNN: Two “active” Obama supporters at Bain confirm Romney left in 1999

posted at 12:41 pm on July 13, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

CNN reported last night that the accusations from Team Obama of felonious conduct are sheer nonsense and lies — and got that message from four executives at Bain, two of whom are “active” supporters of Barack Obama.  John King spoke to all four, three of whom are Democrats, and all four said that Mitt Romney left Bain in a big hurry in 1999 in order to work full time on rescuing the Salt Lake City Olympics.  The rushed departure created a lot of paperwork headaches as Bain tried to unwind Romney from leadership, which required a significant amount of time.  That’s why the company had Romney’s name on their SEC paperwork the next two years, as King reports:

CNN isn’t alone in debunking the ludicrous charge of felonious conduct made by Team Obama.  FactCheck concluded that even with the “new” evidence produced by the Boston Globe, it still points to the same conclusion:

None of the SEC filings show that Romney was anything but a passive, absentee owner during that time, as both Romney and Bain have long said. It should not surprise anyone that Romney retained certain titles while he was working out the final disposition of his ownership, for example….

We would reassess our judgment should somebody come up with evidence that Romney took part in specific management decisions or had any active role (not just a title) at Bain after he left to head the Olympics. But nothing we’ve seen directly contradicts Romney’s statements — which he has certified as true under pain of federal prosecution — that he “has not had any active role” with Bain or “been involved in the operations” of Bain since then.

And we wish to note, we’re not alone in this judgement.

FactCheck links to the Washington Post’s Glenn Kessler, as I did this morning, as well as to Fortune’s Dan Primack in his July 2 review of the same data, this time from a Mother Jones “exposé.”  Primack also has an update, and it also debunks the Obama campaign’s accusations:

But the contemporaneous Bain documents show that Romney was indeed telling the truth about no longer having operational input at Bain — which, one should note, is different from no longer having legal or financial ties to the firm.

As Fortune wrote earlier, Romney left Bain suddenly — rather than as part of an organized transition plan — after being asked to lead an Olympic organizing committee that had spiraled out of control. Moreover, it was unclear in February 1999 if Romney’s leave of absence would be permanent, or if he would return (as he had in 1994, after losing a U.S.Senate race to Ted Kennedy). He didn’t formally give up his title and firm ownership until 2002, once the Games had been successful and he was interested in other elective office. In the interim, he continued to fulfill legal obligations such as signing certain documents — but actual investment and managerial decisions were being made by others.

Put it simply: Team Obama is lying, and it continues to lie about Romney.  They are desperate to find a way to make Romney’s time at Bain work in their favor, and that desperation has nearly reached pathological levels.  Still, for Obama, it beats talking about the economy, jobs, the deficit, and anything else that actually matters to voters.

MNHawk on July 13, 2012 at 1:29 PM

Just some food for thought: I don’t think Mitt Romney’s Bain ties are a negative.

Attention spans are ridiculously short these days. Almost to the point that anything approaching an “explanation” is already too long to have an impact. Debunking the Obama LOTD (“Lie Of The Day”) is always a good idea and necessary, but there is more to the Bain story than an examination of Mr. Romney’s time card to see when he did or did not clock in for work. In fact, the very exercise suggests that there is something at Bain from which Mr. Romney should want to distance himself. To the contrary, there is rich ore there to mine for Mr. Romney and I suggest that he could easily turn this dump truck over to bury those who started the dirt digging in the first place.

Rather than talking about what Mitt Romney didn’t do while at Bain Capital, why not talk about what he did do.

Some of the companies turned around by the firm are household names in America. Why not talk about some success stories. Companies rescued, turned around, made profitable… so that they could continue to… drum roll…. employ and pay people.

The story of the power and success of private capital at work in America is, in fact, largely the American story (remember, private equity is the savings you sink into the bake shop you’ve always dreamed of opening just as much as it is the future investment in your expanding bake shop empire by outside investors). It is the story of what opportunity and free market capitalism can do when not shackled and bled by a rapacious government whoring for cash to pay off it’s base and friends.

So, for me, it would go something like this:

“You want to talk about Bain Capital? Great. Let’s talk about Bain Capital…. Anybody here ever heard of Staples?”

The reason Obama is trying to link Romney to Bain after 1999 is that Bain apparently invested, soon after Romney left for the Olympics job, in a waste management company which had a division or department specializing in the disposal of aborted fetuses.

It’s all a set up for them to, at just the last minute and probably in October, attempt to depress the socially conservative vote. This is why we’re hearing about Romney’s so-called involvement in Bain until 2002.

Bain invested in Toys R Us in 2005, Dunkin Donuts and Burlington Coat Factory in 2006, and Domino’s Pizza in 2010, long after Romney left Bain either in 1999 (per Romney) or 2002 (per the Democrats).

Romney can’t take credit for those investments, but it does show that Bain contributes to many successful companies, without dismantling them and laying off their employees, as the Democrats are trying to claim.

The Dems don’t seem to care whether Romney was actually there or not, so I’m not too concerned either. I just don’t have the time to go that deep into Bain’s history to find out which specific companies Romney himself may have been responsible for. The main point being – Bain as a company is clearly not the evil factory destroyer and outsourcer that the Dems try to claim and is in fact very successful at creating jobs in the US.

Just curious, can you give us credible multi-sourced cites of “Fox Noise” doing anything comparable to the following Moments in Journalistic Greatness perpetrated by CNN over the years?

1. Broadcast false reports that the US had dropped nerve gas on Laotian civilians

2. Covered up Saddam Hussein’s brutality against his own citizens for 10 years, just to keep their Baghdad office open.

3. Had their CEO resign in disgrace after he falsely claimed in a public forum that US soldiers had “murdered” Iraqi journalists.

4. And happily broadcast in prime time video provided to them by America’s enemies showing the snipers’ eyes’ views thru their scopes just before they took out their American targets.

And remember, I said credible and multi-sourced. So Media Matters is out. As are FauxNews.com and Faux-News.com and NewsHounds.

Companies have been OUTSOURCING for decades. Offshoring became a trade tool during the CLINTON ADMINISTRATION. Regardless of what companies did or did not do regarding offshoring in the 1990′s, it was the Clinton administration, slick himself, his Secretary of State and his Secretary of Commerce who used OFFSHORING as a negotiation tool.

Funny how the dead head unions seem to forget these things when their guy is in the WH. Their last guy mainstreamed OFFSHORING.

Did SeeNN also ask if these “active” Obama supporters will be voting for Bain Romney this fall?

SeeNN- We follow Fox Noise, Public Ignores.

Uppereastside on July 13, 2012 at 1:58 PM

Since they are democrats, they are inherently stupid, but maybe by November they will wise up enough to vote for Romney instead of someone who wants to destroy their business and our country. Why would you ask people on a conservative website what sort of stupidity democrat voters are capable of?

Ed Rendell on MSNBC: Obama Campaign Went “Too Far”

Good for Fast Eddie. These flashes of honesty must be driving the democratics crazy.

3 of the 4 execs. are Democrats…And it’s like this all over, and yet the Democrats still get away with calling Republicans the party of big business and morons buy into it. I’m so sick of stupid people, especially stupid people who vote.

pannw on July 13, 2012 at 3:57 PM

Oh come on people, The Dog Eater’s folks aren’t saying Romney is a felon, they’re just asking questions.

edshepp on July 13, 2012 at 4:14 PM

W*O*W!!!! “CNN reported last night that the accusations from Team Obama of felonious conduct are sheer nonsense and lies…” Never thought I would see CNN report such a devestating and d@mning report on Obama…thought they would just say NOTHING before point out the blatant fact that OBAMA IS A LIAR!!!

WaPo has alreaddy give Obama 4 AND 3 ‘Pinocchios’ for his 2 Bain Capital adds…which did not slow him down from continuing to air the LIES in attacking Romney. Then, as Obama has been doing with bad ideas lately, he ‘doubled-down by suggesting romney might be guilty of a Felony. This time it isn’t WaPo calling him a LIAR – it’s his own beloved CNN!

1) The only FELON here is Eric Holder, who committed 3 Felony counts of PERJURY before Congress – aired on TV for the entire world to see.

2) Obama has demeaned the Office of the President throughout his entire administration, but – like with deficit spending – he has set a new RECORD, a record LOW for integrity, morals, & ethics by the ‘leader of the free world’.

His administration has acknowleged these ads are lies — when confronted, one of his advisors admitted they were lies but said they keep running them because it continues to ‘resonate’, that if people hear it enough it will ‘become true’. What a despicable, pathetic human being! I swear, I think he would dress his daughters in Burkas & pimp out his wife if it guaranteed his re-election!

Finally, another thing I thought I would never say, Way to go, CNN, for calling Obama a LIAR and pointing out the fact that his entire re-election campaign is to run negative attacks filled with LIES!

easyt65 on July 13, 2012 at 4:25 PM

Hey, look! CNN committed a random act of journalism. They should be due for another one in a couple of years.

You must be a fool to think fast Eddie represents anything democrat. This is the same fatso who chose Alen Specter over Joe Sestak. Same fool who chose Hillary over Obama. He is yet to see a democrat he won’t attack.

Saying fast Eddie represents democrats is like saying Lisa Murkowsku represents the tea party.

Obama’s minions will have no trouble getting hired at the Ministry of Truth. Vile whoppers like this should help them build up cred with Big Brother.

I hope they will all give a blood sample for research toward isolating the Shame Gene which they seem to be missing.

Debbie Wasserman-Schultz only has so much blood.

Or maybe I’m just hypersensitive.

35tww on July 13, 2012 at 2:04 PM

Nope.

Just saw a quick news item on WGN Chicago, and it ran all the quotes we’re seeing explaining how it was possible to be listed as an “owner” and still not be managing the company — and after the story was finished — after the story was finished — they pasted a little appendix to it that said something like “We’ve just obtained documents showing Romney was still [the owner] in two thousand …”

And then they were done.

It was clear, it was deliberate, it was manipulative and misleading.

It’s just where we are.

Oh, I don’t think slickwillie2001 is the fool here. You are a liberal, so that honor goes to you. Why can you NEVER have an argument that stands on its own? You have to try to find SOME sort of equivalency. Don’t look now, but your side is starting to feed on each other like a zombie apocalypse. Rendell is not the only liberal democrat that is out there saying Obama is pretty much done. He is not the only one distancing himself from your POS communist. Get used to it.

Yeah, you’re right. After all, he was only the Mayor of Philadelphia. After being that Democrat city’s DA for 2 terms. And in 2004 he was responsible for helping the idiot you Democrats ran for President win the Keystone State.

And his wife (they separated last year) is an Activist Democrat Judge nominated by Bill Clinton.

Do you consider Rendell a Traitor to your Party?

Del Dolemonte on July 13, 2012 at 5:05 PM

Blogs, Talk Radio and Conservative Media have done a piss poor job debunking this story. Freaking CNN, Fortune and the Washington Post debunk it and it takes all day just to report that THEY debunked it.

These scumbags in Chicago are more willing to lie than any campaign in American history and virtually no digging by the biggest names.

X-D Brilliant takedown. The two smart Democrats I know were enraged when they handed the nomination to Mr.Affirmative Action instead of a semi-competent woman, and they had no choice but to kiss his arse or be called racists.

Shrillary would’ve take great joy in dragging Obama around the nation to garner black welfare voters. Can’t you just imagine the painfully obviously fake smile on his face as he stands next to her on stage, knowing every second that he’s nothing but a pawn?

A Modest Proposal To Resolve Romney’s Trumped Up Felony Charges

Written by The Looking Spoon

Now they’re trying to say that Romney lied to the SEC (a felony) about when he left Bain. This has been pretty well dispensed with as false (here and here), but this isn’t stopping liberals, or the Obama campaign, from calling him a liar and criminal.

If they persist with this it’s going to turn into a birther type problem for them, but with less substance.

I know how we can resolve this…

Romney can tell us the truth about when he actually left Bain when Øbama tells us the truth about when he actually left Kenya.

petefrt on July 14, 2012 at 8:16 AM

This kind of disgusting low-blow politics will backfire on 2008 Obama voters who are on the fence. It will tip them toward not voting at all or voting for Romney. My neighbors are a perfect example: all for Obama in 2008; on the fence now. And they’re diehard Democrats.

Just another one of his promises broken: not to engage in dirty politics. Ha. His politics are so dirty that a pool full of Irish Spring would never get him clean.
