Real talk: Allen West will not be bullied, thank you very much

posted at 4:01 pm on July 10, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Rep. Allen West (R-Florida) came under fire last week for a few choice comments about liberal racism, as well as about President Obama actively engendering a culture of dependency.

I really feel that it is demeaning to me to think that I need some individual to justify me and my existence. Look, I went through 22 years being in the military, I rose to the rank of Lt. Colonel, I have a bachelor and 2 masters degrees. And for these white liberals to believe they can have this condescending manner toward black conservatives that we need to have approval from our quote unquote, I guess “masters”, for us to be able to speak – see that’s where the true racism really lies governor is with the white liberals who don’t want to see someone such as myself that broke away from their dependency class and is out here and able to possibly contend against them with the policies that they are promoting that’s destroying the black community. I know I’m their #1 target and it just emboldens me to speak out even stronger.

And:

“Self-esteem comes from doing esteemable things. Sitting at home and getting a check from the government is not going to help your self-esteem. What it will do is make you an economic slave to people living in a far, far, distant place,” West said on Sunday.

“He does not want you to have the self-esteem of getting up and earning and having that title of ‘American,’” the congressman said of the president. “He’d rather you be his slave and be economically dependent upon him.”

Rep. West is often criticized for being incisive, intemperate, shooting from the hip, rabble rabble rabble — but West is having none of it. He doesn’t care what the liberal media does to exacerbate and twist his words, and he doesn’t care who knows it:

“I don’t care about my critics,” Rep. Allen West (R-Fla) said about the response to his comments about slavery and liberal racism. “I understand that my country is at a very perilous situation and i’m going to use the type of words that are necessary to get the attention of the American people.”

“I want to make sure that the United States of America, that has been around for 236 years as the beacon of liberty, freedom and democracy, continues on for our subsequent generations. Our children and grandchildren. And I really don’t care about critics. I really don’t care about the liberal media,” West said.

So. Boss. Even if you don’t like what Rep. West has to say, it’s hard to help admiring the way he says it. He’s never screeching or whining — he’s always calm and measured when he’s laying out his case, and he refuses to be cowed by anyone. Sorry, but I’ll take perhaps-politically-unwise-but-straight-shootin’ real talk over carefully-planned-populist-pandering rhetoric any day of the week.

You don’t understand the meaning of racism. Racism is not the act of saying “race influences x or y situation/opinion.” Which is what I’m doing when I argue that West’s fame within the conservative movement is principally due to his race.

Your entire comment was tinged with racism. Not to mention condescension.

But then, it doesn’t surprise me that a self professed “Liberal” would come out against a man telling people to strive to be self sufficient by committing themselves to earning their keep and participating in American society, rather than allow themselves to become dependent.

Therefore, the media and the leftists are the biggest racists.

Schadenfreude on July 10, 2012 at 4:43 PM

I have no interest in keeping slavery alive. What I find offensive is the casual use of slave imagery and rhetoric to describe contemporary politics. It should offend anyone who’s familiar with what enslavement was actually like for black people in this country, as well as British/French Carribean, Spanish and Portuguese colonies. But again, if we “forget” what slavery was it becomes easy to call it up in contemporary political arguments. And what’s really offensive is that in calling up images of “slavery” and “the plantation” conservatives are conceding that these things were horrible, and then in the same breath devalue them by comparing them to contemporary political disagreements. If you have any moral center, it should offend you.

libfreeordie on July 10, 2012 at 4:28 PM

For one thing he calls it economic slavery. For another the word slavery is a word with a basic meaning that can be applied to a situation without being tied to any history of slavery. But you’re a liberal so it’s impossible for you not to switch the narrative to race and identity groups. YOU are the one who puts a lot of emphasis on West being a black man. Similar comments are popular on the right no matter the skin color or gender of the one saying them. It’s only in YOUR mind that the skin color of West matters. But you’re a liberal and you can’t help projecting that on to us.

You don’t actually bother to deal with the argument that West is making – instead you choose to be offended at how he said it. But again you are a liberal so your feelings are more important that than logic.

gwelf on July 10, 2012 at 4:43 PM

Deano1952 on July 10, 2012 at 4:37 PM

1800s slavery? You mean slavery after the Trans-Atlantic slave trade became illegal in 1809. So you’re referring to the era of U.S. slavery where the domestic slave trade was at its peak. Where to meet demand southern slave owners began to actively “breed” their human property to increase their value. Where children from north east and southeastern slave states were south and west, often ripped from the arms of their mothers. You’re right. The mental pain of that is way less than the mental pain of being on food stamps.

Your statement is precisely what is at stake for conservatives who want to eliminate mention of slavery from the textbooks (the TN tea party has brought that back up) and what is so horrific about contemporary statements which equate welfare programs with enslavement. You are effectively taking centuries of the worst human suffering and brutality, a suffering that was almost exclusively suffered by the ancestors of today’s black citizens and suggesting it is the same thing as getting a voucher card for groceries. Your ability to devalue the experience of actual human enslavement is stunning.

In many universities, Freshman are forced to endure PC orientation, where they learn all about the concept of “White privilege”. The crux of this crackpot theory is that because White people will never know what it’s like to spend a day in a Black person’s shoes, they are not in a position to pass judgement on the rage that many Black people feel towards White Americans.

On the other hand, if being a victim of racism inspires a Black person to pull themselves up from their boot straps and make something of themselves, so that no one will be able to look down on them, and that in turn causes them to embrace Conservative principles of self sufficiency, then the whole White privilege nonsense gets thrown out the window, and upper middle class White suburbanites, whose only contact with Black people consists of the maid and the gardener, are permitted to call these Black Conservatives every name in the book with impunity.

On the other hand, making fun of someone and pre-judging them because of their skin color is racist, to wit:

In advance of Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s speech Wednesday to the NAACP, a liberal group headed by a former New York Times reporter and ex-Media Matters executive have produced a video “satire” that claims blacks don’t like Romney, who they dub so white he makes “Wonder Bread look like pumpernickel.”

You don’t think there’s any need to distinguish between these two statements:

1. I believe x or y race is inferior/superior to others.

2. Centuries of anti-black stereotypes continue to influence how many Americans (of all races, including black people) respond to African Americans.

No matter what you think about those two statements, they are doing two fundamentally different things. Yet you would have us believe that both are “racism” Uh, OK.

libfreeordie on July 10, 2012 at 4:37 PM

They’re used in exactly the same way to do exactly the same thing, to shut people down. The first is overt, the second is implied, a form of– heh– “subtle” or “unconscious” racism. Certainly there’s a logical distinction between the two, but neither statement is used in real life to advance an argument– it’s intended to be the end of the argument.

You might not even realize you’re doing it (it’s so insidious and unconscious), but the underlying and unstated premise of statement two is… “and they don’t even realize it, because they’re [unconsciously] racist.”

That’s why you felt compelled to point out that the only reason anyone would laud West is because he’s a black man saying what Moynihan once said (and you left out Charles Murray, whose Losing Ground, the sociological elaboration of Moynihan’s premise provided the rationale for Clinton’s abolition of welfare as Dems had known and loved it since The Great Society). Your critique of West’s supporters was pure and not particularly subtle racism.

This hair-splitting of terms here is typical liberal moral-equivalency.

Conservatives are far more away from being Nazis than is the ‘Democrat/liberal plantation’ comparison. And who would know better about the slavery/plantation analogy than a black American?

I bet there are more former slaves in West’s family history in America than there are Obama’s.

Liam on July 10, 2012 at 5:10 PM

Spike Lee said that if Obama isn’t re-elected, he won’t see another black president in his life time.

Well…he’s going to eat those words. Allen West IS going to be our president within the next couple of elections, and I will be behind him a thousand percent!!! Then let’s see Spike Lee go absolutely apesh*t because West is not a liberal and will not allow himself to be bullied by ANYONE!

Throughout recorded human history Egyptians enslaved Hebrews, Japanese enslaved Koreans and Chinese, Romans enslaved Egyptians and Hebrews and Arabs and Europeans, African tribes enslaved other African tribes – and sold them to Europeans and Arabs, the British enslaved Scots and Irish and Indians and many others, Mayans and Aztecs enslaved each other and other more primitive tribes, and on and on. So why is it American liberals (black and white) seem to think they have exclusive rights to talk about slavery of any kind?

Del Dolemonte on July 10, 2012 at 5:30 PM

Remind me, how many people died during the Trans-Atlantic slave trade? How many died on British and French plantations in the Caribbean? You don’t know the answer to these things because while conservatives claim to be experts on American history they know *jack* about the history of slavery. Which is precisely why they deploy it in political debates about food stamps.

libfreeordie on July 10, 2012 at 4:47 PM

And you of course, have a intimate knowledge of American Slavery, perhaps?

BlaxPac on July 10, 2012 at 5:30 PM

Good for Allen West. Even though he’s not as fiscally conservative/limited government as I would like, I’ve admired his straight-talking ways since he first appeared on the national scene.

He’s my favorite for VP. I’m really leery of having a POTUS with no military experience considering that the POTUS is the Commander in Chief. If Allen West is VP, we’d at least have the voice of military experience in Romney’s ear. He also has over 20 years of executive leadership experience, something that an appalling number of our politicians lack. He knows first hand the people and the situation in the Middle East. He represents the South, a demographic that Romney probably needs help with. He’s an excellent example of a committed husband and father and comes from a proud family tradition of military service.

As for his comments, conservatives have, for years, said that the Democrats want to “keep blacks on the liberal plantation”, meaning that they enjoy the automatic vote of people on the government dole. West said the same thing, just out loud where everyone can hear it. We have far too many people depending on government for a handout – welfare, unemployment, food stamps, tax breaks, loopholes, etc. That’s how votes get bought.

Bobby Jindal would also be great, but the little evil girl on my shoulder would enjoy seeing heads spin on the left if West got the nod.

At the same time this should be a wake-up for those posters who volunteer so much personal information that it literally challenges someone with time on their hands to put it all together.

It was not wise for libfreeordie to dump so much personal and descriptive information, in a rather short period of time, onto a public blog so that it all literally became a road map for anyone who chose to follow it. It all now resides in google for any of the curious to peruse forever. NOT SMART.

This is what I warned a black friend about in 2008.

If history records that the first black President was the most incompetent jackass ever to become President, how long might it be before we get a good one?

When all of us, libs and conservatives alike, could name a dozen more competent blacks we would have preferred to become Pres before this Panderer-in-Chief. It was inevitable that the country would suffer for having elected someone this narcissistic, immature, intellectually lazy, overly simplistic, preening and incompetent.

But maybe, as you say, this will make us double our efforts to recognize the contributions that courageous, conservative blacks have made.

how do you feel about the cheerleading of West’s use of slave-imagery by those on the right?

libfreeordie on July 10, 2012 at 4:38 PM

Nazi is a specific ideological movement. Slavery is far more generic, though I do realize that a black man speaking about slavery in America does bring up a specific connotation that cannot be ignored. Ultimately though, he is specifically talking about people who have become dependent on the government for their every need even at the cost of freedoms they might once have taken for granted.

I don’t have to use the S word for you to realize I’m talking about a form of slavery.

I get the objection to references to plantations, but I’ve pointed out before that we’re not the ones that started that. We didn’t call Powell an Uncle Tom. We’re simply pointing out that others are saying this, and that it’s wrong.

DaMav on July 10, 2012 at 5:36 PM

As a prior Air Force officer and long time defense contractor, I love West. The fact that he retired as a LtCol is a plus in my mind because once they reach full bird Colonel or General they tend to become far too political and often too politically correct. Since West didn’t go through general officer “finishing school” he says what he thinks – very directly – and I like that.

Cons: We respect Col. West.

Libs: That’s only because he’s black.
