Quotes of the day

posted at 8:01 pm on July 8, 2012 by Allahpundit

President Obama’s bus tour through Ohio and Pennsylvania late last week offered a striking look at the evolution of a president. In 2008, Obama used soaring rhetoric and personal biography to talk about binding together a red-blue nation. His message today is about the urgent need to defeat a stubborn opposition party in order to move the country forward…

That is a change from the way he talked as a candidate in 2008. His message then was not so much about either-or choices. That was not the message he delivered when he first appeared on the national stage at the 2004 Democratic convention, nor was it the message he offered the night he scored his breakthrough victory in the 2008 Iowa caucuses that launched him toward the White House. He did not talk about elections as tiebreakers between two sides but of a country hungering for a new model for its politics…

Many Democrats say it’s about time that the president got tough, that he spent too much time trying to negotiate with Republicans who weren’t interested in negotiating with him.

***

It’s nothing like the first campaign, the former Illinois state legislator and U.S. senator said — when he and his wife circulated fliers printed at Kinko’s.

It sure isn’t…

Off the 68,443 ads that Obama has run on TV (local broadcast, national network & national cable) in the 30-day period ended July 2, 52,016 had an “anti-Romney message” — 76 percent of the total, according to New York-based Kantar Media’s CMAG, which monitors campaign advertising.

Obama’s negative ads have overtaken his positive ads. Since April 10, when Republican Rick Santorum’s exit essentially made Romney his party’s presumptive nominee, Obama has run 112,202 ads, of which 58,151 were anti-Romney and 54,051 positive.

***

Of the 17 TV advertisements Obama has aired here [in Iowa], eight have pummeled Romney’s resume as a governor of Massachusetts and founder of a large private equity firm. Increasingly, the ads have pressed the outsourcing hot button, although independent fact checkers have dressed down that attack as using false or thinly supported claims.

Republicans call it a smear campaign, arguing Romney was not responsible for what companies did after he left Bain Capital. Indeed, they point to Obama as an outsourcer, citing him as responsible for jobs sent overseas by companies who received federal stimulus money.

***

Top Democrats repeatedly slammed Mitt Romney on Sunday for his foreign wheelings and dealings, as President Obama’s campaign continues to make the case that the presumptive GOP nominee doesn’t understand the concerns of the middle class…

“He is the first and only candidate for President of the United States with a Swiss bank account, with tax shelters, with tax avoidance schemes that involve so many foreign countries,” Durbin, the No. 2 Democrat in the Senate, said on CBS’s “Face the Nation.”

“When it comes down to his Swiss bank account, there is just no way to explain it,” Durbin added. “You either get a Swiss bank account to conceal what you are doing or you believe the Swiss franc is stronger than the American dollar.”

***

Democratic Gov. Martin O’Malley (Md.) hammered Mitt Romney on Sunday over a report detailing his use of offshore accounts, saying the presumptive GOP nominee had “bet against America.”

“He bet against America when he put his money in Swiss bank accounts and tax havens and shelters and also set up a secret company, the shell company in Bermuda, which, by the way, in order to avoid disclosure, he put in his wife’s name right before he became governor of Massachusetts,” O’Malley charged.

His comments come after a Vanity Fair report released last week said Romney’s financial advisers formed a corporation in Bermuda and the GOP candidate maintained holdings in Switzerland and the Cayman Islands.

***

“Being rich is not a problem,” said Bob Shrum, a Democratic consultant who helped Senator Edward M. Kennedy defeat Mr. Romney in their 1994 Senate race in Massachusetts. “Being rich and out of touch is a problem.”

Mr. Romney’s campaign has pushed back hard against some of the wealth-themed attacks, which have included assertions that at Bain he enriched himself by promoting the outsourcing of American jobs. Increasingly the Romney campaign is turning Mr. Obama’s attacks back on him by suggesting that the president is in denial about his record and is out of touch with the economic strains felt by most Americans.

“They just can’t come to grips with the reality of what’s happening out there and the president’s responsibility for it,” said [Stuart] Stevens, [a Romney] campaign strategist.

***

***

Obama campaign senior adviser Robert Gibbs said Sunday that Americans simply don’t know enough about Mitt Romney’s finances to determine if he’s doing anything illegal.

“We don’t know. Nobody knows,” the former White House press secretary said on CNN’s “State of the Union” when asked if the presumptive Republican presidential nominee was skirting tax law.

“The one thing he can do, Candy, to clear up whether or not he’s done anything illegally, whether he’s shielding his income from taxes in Bermuda or Switzerland, is to do what ever other presidential candidate is done and that’s to release a series of years of their own tax returns,” Gibbs told host Candy Crowley.

***

This president has already shown that he’s not who he said he was. He claimed he was going to bring everyone together, he was going to be this uniter. He’s been the most divisive, nasty, negative campaigner this country’s ever seen without running any positive ads.

2/3 of the $625B of the Obamacare TAX will be extracted from people making $250,000 or less.

3/4…. a full $500B of the total $625B… will be extracted from people making $120,000 or less. These individuals are definitively the middle class and working poor.

These funds will NOT be extracted from people on Medicaid as these people fall below the minimum income level to PAY any federal taxes.

Another $650B is being cut from Medicare reimbursements and benefits. These funds are being extracted from the health care of seniors, the disabled, and veterans, most of whom are poor or middle class.

**The VA is a sister program of Medicare, in fact, the same forms used by providers to bill Medicare are used to bill VA health care programs like CHAMPVA. Many veterans, particularly those who live too far from a VA outpatient clinic or VA hospital to be able to access those facilities for care, get their care through Medicare and pay the copay for that care.

ajacksonian on July 8, 2012 at 9:44 PM

AZfederalist on July 8, 2012 at 9:23 PM

Very simple.

When you excuse the upper 1% from paying their fair share in taxes while forcing the middle class to absorb the shortfall, that is redistributing wealth from the middle to the upper 1%

Like i have said numerous times(not that you brainwashed minions care), this economy can only be turned around by policies that directly put money into the hands of the middle class.

The middle/working class spend the most of their disposable income. Someone needs to spend in order to stimulate this economy. We definitely can’t turn this recession around by focusing on cuts or tax increases alone.

My spending is your income while your spending is my income.

Private businesses aren’t expanding because their is no demand for their products/services. Consumers are not spending because they are scared of losing their jobs and not having anything to fall back on. The only sector that can break the stalemate is the government. The government needs to find a way of putting money into the hands of the middle class. Once the middle class feels good about the economy, they will start spending again. The spending will create demand which will force business to start hiring.

But the crazy GOP and some elitist dems cant seem to comprehend this easy to grasp business cycle. They think eliminating the taxes for businesses will cause said businesses to start hiring. They fail to understand businesses will never hire unless their is demand for their products.

Stimulus Funds for Green Energy Projects Going Offshore along with Other U.S. Manufacturing Wind
Posted November 6, 2009

The Obama Administration sold its $787 billion stimulus plan on the basis of improving the economy through investing in green energy and by doing so, increasing employment in the United States. But what is actually happening, particularly with wind and solar projects, is that the majority of the manufactured components are being built offshore in either Asia or Europe, resulting in foreign countries capturing a good deal of our stimulus funds and finding a lucrative haven for their products in the United States.
…..
Since September 1, 84 percent of the $1.05 billion in clean energy grants has gone to foreign wind companies. Foreign countries benefiting from stimulus funds for wind technology are Spain (57%), Germany (12.6%), Japan (9.5%), and Portugal (5%

Well, first of all, Mama T, let’s examine what your Democrats did for negative campaigning in 2004. They actually had a major network news anchor run a false story based on faked documents in order to swing the election to their Candidate.

As for that “Candidate”?

1. That “decorated war hero” renounced his medals and also secretly met with the North Vietnamese while still a military officer. To this day, he refuses to release his complete military history (unlike Bush), because he knows what it contains. If we knew, he would never be elected again.

2. “The Republicans” didn’t take Thurston out in 2004. His fellow military colleagues did.

Uppereastside on July 8, 2012 at 9:44 PM

You’re not describing a business cycle. You’re talking about classic Keynesian stimulus, and it’s a proven failure every time it’s tried, most recently in 2009.

You never define the 1%’s “fair share,” of course– but it would be whatever tax rate you say, I’m sure. Problem is, to paraphrase the article at the link, at this point you and the Obamanists sound more like sweaty gamblers begging to be allowed back to the card table to cover ever-mounting losses. Why should the 1% OR the middle class hand any more chips over to you?

FYI for upyerbackside:
A commenter at “Best of the Web” posted this observation in re to Obama’s “Betting on America” blitz in PA and OH on a Canadian-made bus a few days ago.

.

Don’t forget those fine taxpayer-backed green energy projects, some where the taxpayers’ claims were rendered secondary to those of O’s crony pals (kind of like GM and Chrysler debtholders). To date, here is a list of Obama’s failed or soon-to-fail energy bets: Abound, Solar Trust of America, Bright Source, Solyndra, LSP Energy, Energy Conversion Devices, SunPower, Beacon Power, Ecotality, A123, UniSolar, Azure Dynamics, Evergreen Solar, Ener1. For the record, I still own a few hundred (out of 1000) high-cost basis and now nearly worthless shares of A123 (a gimme to my broker, against my better judgment).

Obama likes to “bet” with other people’s money, especially that of taxpayers.

Might I remind my fellow commentators that replying or arguing with a moron like uppereastside is somewhat unfair. It is the equivalent of dueling with an unarmed thing as might be found in a zoo or at an Obama rally. I’ve always found that when a monkey starts masturbating in his cage, it is wise to look away.

TXUS on July 8, 2012 at 10:14 PM

Very simple.

When you excuse the upper 1% from paying their fair share in taxes while forcing the middle class to absorb the shortfall, that is redistributing wealth from the middle to the upper 1%

OK, looking at the tax code, if you make over $174K, you pay 33% of the amount of $174K. If you make over $379.15K, you pay 35%. Make less than $174K, you pay 28%.

So: If you make less than $34,500, you pay 15% on anything over $8500
$34.5K to $83.6, you pay 25%
83.6 to 174,400, you pay 28%
174.4 to $379.15 you pay 33%

Let’s recap, I think 35% is greater than 33% is greater than 28%.

So, how is it you think the “rich” whatever you define that to be are not paying their “fair share”? What, in your mind constitutes fair share, and why is it that somebody making more money should pay a greater percentage of what they make rather than simply paying more money because the same percentage is a larger value? Why and how is that even “fair”?

Like i have said numerous times(not that you brainwashed minions care), this economy can only be turned around by policies that directly put money into the hands of the middle class.

The middle/working class spend the most of their disposable income. Someone needs to spend in order to stimulate this economy. We definitely can’t turn this recession around by focusing on cuts or tax increases alone.

So taking more money out of the people you call the upper class via taxes puts money in the hands of the middle class, how?

Uppereastside on July 8, 2012 at 9:44 PM

Wow, that is so twisted it’s scary. Command economy does not work. It never has, it never will.

Businesses aren’t spending because they are scared of the regulations and additional burdens being imposed by the Government. Thus, they are not hiring. This is not a difficult concept to grasp.

Statist is the kindest apellation people can apply to you. If that is your viewpoint, you are hopeless and if people with your viewpoint wind up running our country, we are doomed. There isn’t enough space in a single posting to point out all of the flaws in your premises; pretty much the last 3 1/2 years of Obamunism should have shown the failure of such policies as well as the rampant cronyism and fraud that accompany such policies.

If you don’t see that, you are just too blind to see.

/hint, we ain’t the brainwashed ones. Get your head out of the NYT and Dana Milbank and look at the real world once in a while, you might learn something.

AZfederalist on July 8, 2012 at 10:15 PM

And the truth is if they try to demonize Romney, and he comes across in the debates a decent, intelligent man..well that could actually hurt Obama. You are one of those players who constantly folds when a bluffer out raises you. We have a $15 trillion economy. A poorly spent $800b stimulus will do nothing to revive such economy during a recession. The stimulus should have been at least 3 times that much. It should have been used to directly to hire folks or train folks with 21st century skills to get good jobs

The republicans and some dirty democrats managed to craft the bill in a way that undermined its potential. Obama probably wanted more however he knew there was no way he was going to get it with crony democratic senators like Lincoln, Nelson and Bayh.
