Open thread: Sunday morning talking heads

posted at 8:01 am on July 8, 2012 by Allahpundit

Slim pickings this morning: “Meet the Press” is preempted by Tour de France coverage and nothing much else is going on except Reince Priebus and Debbie Wasserman-Schultz in a battle of RNC/DNC talking points on “Fox News Sunday.” Your best bet is probably Bobby Jindal on ABC, as these high-profile Sunday surrogate appearances on Romney’s behalf amount to de facto VP tryouts for him, Ryan, and Pawlenty.

The line-up via WaPo:

CBS’ Face the Nation: Sen. John McCain (R-AZ); Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL); former Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour; Doris Kearns Goodwin, baseball historian; Frank Deford, Sports Illustrated; Harold Reynolds, MLB TV; Jayson Stark, ESPN

ABC’s This Week: Gov. Martin O’Malley (D-MD); Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA); George Will, ABC; E.J. Dionne, Washington Post and Brookings Institution; Gwen Ifill, PBS; Steven Rattner, former Counselor to the Treasury Secretary and Obama administration Lead Auto Adviser; Mort Zuckerman, U.S. News & World Report

Fox News Sunday: Rep. Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL); Reince Priebus, Chairman of the Republican National Committee; Rep. Tom Price (R-GA); Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA); Bill Kristol, Weekly Standard and Fox News; AB Stoddard, The Hill; Chip Saltsman, former Huckabee campaign manager; Juan Williams, Fox News

CNN’s State of the Union with Candy Crowley: Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-KY); Robert Gibbs, Obama Campaign Senior Adviser; Douglas Holtz-Eakin; Mark Zandi, Moody’s Analytics; former New Jersey Senator Bill Bradley

Jindal versus O’Malley should be a no contest.

Rep. Xavier Becerra (D-CA)

I’m telling you, this is the Democrats new golden boy, they have been trotting him out now for a while. Check him out, he’s hispanic, good looking and wears smart glasses. But there is one thing they forget about him, this guy is as dumb as a post. I’m not exaggerating, this guy is Maxine Waters stupid, Joe Biden stupid.

Your best bet is probably Bobby Jindal

biden will destroy the stiff and wonky jindal with his folksy appeal. Palin walked up kicked him the cojones and said can i call you joe and stepped on him throughout the debates. and the media still called it for joe.

bidens a nasty tough cookie. he’d love nothing better than to kick this little boy around. and the media will applaud and magnify his comments to the nth degree.

jindals as good as anyone in mitts crowd. he loves him some big government.if he backed rick perry, then you KNOW he love him some crony capitalism.

some may wonder, why is ol’ renalin up in such a lather this morning?
i’ll you folks. where i live, its summer, there are a zillion people on the roads. everyone seems happy.
is it only me that sees the businesses that are closing. the lighting stores, the shutter stores, the blockbusters, the furniture stores all leaving gaping holes in the strip malls they occupy.
the price of my home has dropped in half and i’m lucky that i can still work for another 10-20 years.

and then you have the clown-in-chief, lying with every word that comes out of his mouth, yet his approval ratings remain around 50 percent.

this is not good. mitt can’t pick a vp candidate that would potentially move the needle. its against his nature. he would also have to compromise, and at this point he wants the whole enchilada.

well back to work.

Philly on July 8, 2012 at 10:10 AM

Jindal says libs live in the past (Nixon reference by Axelrod); says he’s happy Romney is financially successful in the private sector. Sidestepping foreign accounts.

Philly on July 8, 2012 at 10:12 AM

Good, Jindal calls it: Bank account questions are meant to sidetracking voters away from the economy and are meant to be distractions.

O’Malley still carping on Swiss bank account. Says Romney bets against America. Says Romney sets up secret bank accounts.

Jindal says outsourcing reports are false; Mitt will go after China; says O’Malley is changing the topic because he doesn’t want to talk about Barry’s failure.

Meh ending, but Jindal is strong. Mitt needs to give his surrogates information to counter bank account accusations and the surrogates needs to attack when these hit.

Battling for every Iowa vote

Some of the once-euphoric Iowans who inspired the nation to embrace Barack Obama in 2008 are experiencing a deep-seated buyer’s remorse over their role in delivering the White House to a candidate they think has let them down.

Take longtime Democrat Debbie Smith. Four years ago, she wore the Obama T-shirts, went to his rallies, made her first campaign contribution and caucused for the first time.

“I wish to have my vote back,” said Smith, 51, a small business owner from Clive. “I feel completely responsible, and I feel like I need to tell people this.”

[snip]

She was drawn to Obama’s message that “we’re not red states, we’re not blue states, we’re the United States.” But now the nation seems even more divided, she said.

The federal debt deeply concerns Smith, who re-registered as a Republican in 2010. Smith, who works in the advertising industry, said she and her husband “cut out all the extras” in 2008 during the recession. Thirteen workers dwindled to seven today, and her husband does the cleaning. The family’s lake home seemed like an expense beyond their means, so they sold it.

“We as a country need to finally learn the lesson that we don’t have the money,” she said.

The day last month when the U.S. Supreme Court made its ruling to uphold the controversial federal health care law, Smith made her first contribution to Romney: $100.

Durango, I agree – Jindal stumbled a bit on the bank account questions. Mitt needs to get that message straight among his surrogates and spokespeople.

At least Jindal did call it correctly – the bank accounts are a distraction and diversion away from Obama’s failed record.

If Mitt delivered it personally, that would be best.

His ratings remain around 46 percent — he hasn’t been able to reach the 50% mark in ages. That’s a huge difference for an incumbent, especially given how lopsidedly Dem the polls are weighted.

And FTR, Romney said when the Obama campaign first demanded that he release 30 years of tax returns that he would when Obama released the minutes of his private discussion with Russia re: “being more flexible.” Not that the MSM reported it.

Dark Star on July 8, 2012 at 11:28 AM

John Hindraker is curious about something else the MSM is not.

I don’t doubt that Obama is in good physical health. He is a young man who golfs frequently and boasts about his prowess on the basketball court. So why does he, almost uniquely among modern presidential candidates, insist on keeping his medical records secret? There are obvious possible explanations, which hardly need to be spelled out. In his book The Amateur, Ed Klein recounts that after Obama lost a primary race to Bobby Rush in 2000, Michelle threatened to divorce him, and Obama was so depressed that friends feared he might be suicidal. Do Obama’s medical records contain references to this incident? Or perhaps to other occasions when he has been diagnosed or received treatment for depression?

This is pure speculation. Yet we know there is some powerful reason why Obama does not want voters to learn his medical history. What is it? A president’s mental health is critically important, and I have always found it remarkable that reporters show no curiosity about what drives Obama to keep his medical history secret, contrary to the practice of nearly every other presidential nominee. Perhaps the Obama campaign’s claim that Mitt Romney is the most secretive candidate since Nixon will be the occasion on which journalists finally ask: Mr. President, since you are so offended by secrecy, why can’t we see your medical records?

Reggie1971 on July 8, 2012 at 12:03 PM

Team Obama and the MSM are so sad — they only know about Romney’s bank accounts because he reported them in his 203 page detailed tax return, which he released in full compliance with all financial disclosure requirements. And they turn this into Romney being “secretive,” pouncing like drooling vultures as if they “have something” when everyone knows that Obama hasn’t released one piece of paper/official document about his entire life other than a few tax returns and a bio full of lies. And they are so stupid they think this attack is *working* and that we are all that stupid. But the vast majority of people in this country don’t care what other people do with their money; they care what the government does with theirs. The article that Flora Duh linked to up thread tells the real story of what is going on out there.

Dark Star on July 8, 2012 at 12:18 PM

“Hey, what’ going on in the Tour de France?” is a phrase I have never personally heard someone utter in my entire life.

Reggie1971 on July 8, 2012 at 11:08 AM

I used to watch parts of it every year until they got such a hardon for Lance Armstrong. The parts I didn’t watch I was curious to hear updates.

Since I have not kept up with it at all this year maybe you can tell me:

Hey, what’ going on in the Tour de France?

Google “Tough ID laws could block thousands of 2012 votes
by The Associated Press”…and see how many places this AP article shows up…

My local area temperature broke a record from 1936 this week…what was driving those record temperatures in 1936..?

I just watched Jindal on ABC’s website. I saw him after the comments here so I expected him not to have done that well. But I thought he did a good job and he refused to allow the moderator to keep him from making his points. I can’t imagine Biden doing very well against him in a debate. Jindal is obviously more capable and he certainly understands the issues. He would be able to make a good case for electing a new administration.

I watched and listened to a little bit of the talking heads on Fox today, and it was a continuation of the second string, not on vacation, that can only wonder out loud how Romney is screwing up the campaign, and flip flopping on everything, and won’t hire good people to run his campaign. That was Fox, they probably ignored Romney at the other stations, so that was the good coverage.

The conclusion I got from this, is that Romney has not hired who ever it is that is starting rumors in the Republican camp, and they need a salary pretty soon or they will snipe all the way until November.

You see the regular people have signed up to do the phone calls, and don’t get paid. They are on the Romney team already.

Was it on Fox or somewhere else that they have labeled Romney and NOT ROBERTS the flip flopper on the supreme court ruling?

I saw Romney make a speech on TV that morning, he said he agrees with the Dissent. But on Fox they cut that out of the video, and are saying he is flip flopping when he said the court says it’s a tax.

I have only one thing to say, really two. I don’t want to hear about this anymore. And. Are Razzles a Candy or Are they a gum?

I like Reince Priebus.

Wow. You’re really going to get non-establishment approved views from that bunch.

Thanks, Flora. I hope this gets coverage, but I have my doubts.

Perhaps Barry will declare a crisis just before the polls open on Nov. 6.

Slim pickings this morning:

Seldom it would seem is that ever not the case.

Bmore on July 8, 2012 at 10:22 AM

That’s why I’m hoping Slim Pickens has channeled voter angst this year and they are waking up yelling this.

biden will destroy the stiff and wonky jindal with his folksy appeal. Palin walked up kicked him the cojones and said can i call you joe and stepped on him throughout the debates. and the media still called it for joe.

renalin on July 8, 2012 at 8:37 AM

No way Biden would “destroy” Jindal in a debate. I think most swing voters are probably tired of flashy smiles and folksy appeal. Jindal is more than capable of carving Biden up like a turkey on policy and, more importantly, handling the media’s loaded questions in between debates. It also pits two relatively successful executives against two legislators with no positive domestic accomplishments.

Lastly, I hate to say it but this is the game we are forced to play with the left: Jindal is a successful minority Governor from the south, which pretty much eliminates the race card. At this point in history the last thing the GOP needs is to trot out two stodgy old white males that perfectly fit the caricature created by the left.

some may wonder, why is ol’ renalin up in such a lather this morning?
i’ll you folks. where i live, its summer, there are a zillion people on the roads. everyone seems happy.
is it only me that sees the businesses that are closing. the lighting stores, the shutter stores, the blockbusters, the furniture stores all leaving gaping holes in the strip malls they occupy.
the price of my home has dropped in half and i’m lucky that i can still work for another 10-20 years.

and then you have the clown-in-chief, lying with every word that comes out of his mouth, yet his approval ratings remain around 50 percent.

this is not good. mitt can’t pick a vp candidate that would potentially move the needle. its against his nature. he would also have to compromise, and at this point he wants the whole enchilada.

well back to work.

renalin on July 8, 2012 at 8:48 AM

Good post,I resemble most of those remarks as well here in the fab fla Keys.
Property rates here too are below sea level with many walking away or staying without paying. The biggest hope for our area, old guys retiring moving down here for some fun in the sun and great fishing. Lets hope it keeps happening.
If we don’t get rid of ozero its over folks.

I’ve been sleeping on an off all day and avoided the talking heads. I was surprised that Wimbledon wasn’t carried by one of he major networks and the Tour de France was ……………… now that was a boneheaded decision by someone.

SC.Charlie on July 8, 2012 at 3:04 PM

Jindal is much smarter than Slow Joe. Maybe Joe will tell us some of his convenience store anecdotes in honor of Gov. Jindal.

Jindal is quick on his feet. He doesn’t let moderators define or derail him.

The Folksy Joe act is played.

Philly on July 8, 2012 at 3:11 PM

ABC’s This Week: Gov. Martin O’Malley (D-MD); Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA); George Will, ABC; E.J. Dionne, Washington Post and Brookings Institution; Gwen Ifill, PBS; Steven Rattner, former Counselor to the Treasury Secretary and Obama administration Lead Auto Adviser; Mort Zuckerman, U.S. News & World Report

This was a snoozy group. Especially the commies in the group. They are so crazy and think they are so right.

I agree with both points. Remember that Obama speech response Jindal gave in 2009?

Out of many, many Press Secretaries out there no one infuriates me more than this guy! Something about everything he says just seems (is?) a lie.

g2825m on July 8, 2012 at 5:17 PM

Jindal got owned on the Swiss/Cayman bank account question. He had no answer and kept ignoring the multiple questions. Maybe there is no good response? It was painful to watch. The strategy certainly can’t be to ignore the question from now until election day. I have a feeling that Joe Sixpack is not going to like Mitt hiding hundreds of millions of dollars in secret bank accounts for exotic tax dodges. Decades of Tax Dodging is the new Democrat attack, and I have not heard of a good response to that attack.
