Obama hits back: Romney’s a big flip-flopping fan of mandates, you know

posted at 4:46 pm on July 6, 2012 by Allahpundit

You know that jobs report was bad when this guy would rather talk about the trillion-dollar albatross perched on his head instead.

A pro-mandate Democrat who can’t get his story straight on whether it’s a tax attacking a pro-mandate Republican because he can’t get his story straight on whether it’s a tax. Perfection. Choices, my friends: They’re what elections are all about.

“One of the things that you learn as president is that what you say matters and your principles matter,” Obama told a local Cincinnati NBC affiliate, according to excerpts provided by his campaign. “And sometimes, you’ve got to fight for things that you believe in and you can’t just switch on a dime.”…

“And the fact that a whole bunch of Republicans in Washington suddenly said this is a tax — for six years he said it wasn’t, and now he has suddenly reversed himself,” Obama noted. “So the question becomes, are you doing that because of politics? Are you abandoning a principle that you fought for, for six years, simply because you’re getting pressure for two days from Rush Limbaugh or some critics in Washington?”…

“On the healthcare bill, Mr. Romney was one of the biggest promoters of the individual mandate,” he said. “In Massachusetts, his whole idea was that we shouldn’t have people who can afford to get health insurance to not buy it and then force you or me or John Q. Public to have to pay for him when he gets sick. That’s irresponsible. That’s exactly what’s included as part of my healthcare plan.”

To recap: The One campaigned against Hillary by opposing the mandate, then reversed himself once in office. He did damage control by swearing that it wasn’t a tax, then had his own SG tell the Supreme Court that it was, then let his campaign spokesman go out this week and lie his ass off about what had happened. Meanwhile, just to locate this within O’s wider campaign strategy, he spent 15 years transparently lying about his position on gay marriage before magically “evolving” a few months ago, and he just recently decided that he could in fact implement chunks of the DREAM Act by executive fiat even though he said last year that he couldn’t. If you believe Marc Ambinder and GQ, the White House is planning to start pushing for reforms to America’s drug-war strategy — but not until next year, as to do so now would be too risky for the Unicorn Prince’s chances in November.

And yet it’s Obama who’s lecturing Romney about fighting for what you believe in and not turning on a dime.

I wonder if he’d dare do that in any context except health care, as it’s the one policy area where he really did make good on his promise to the left to get something big done. Somehow it’s hard to imagine President “Kill List” sounding quite so superior about principles if this were a debate over, say, counterterrorism and national security. Give him credit for a smooth bit of messaging, though, in navigating the left’s two contradictory narratives about Romney. One: He’s a tea-party radical far to the right of Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan. Two: He’s a political weathervane who stands for nothing. By demagoging Rush Limbaugh, Obama gets to have it both ways — Romney’s a weathervane who stands for nothing and can therefore be manipulated by radicals to the right of Goldwater and Reagan. Obama:

“And the fact that a whole bunch of Republicans in Washington suddenly said this is a tax — for six years he said it wasn’t, and now he has suddenly reversed himself,” Obama noted. “So the question becomes, are you doing that because of politics? Are you abandoning a principle that you fought for, for six years, simply because you’re getting pressure for two days from Rush Limbaugh or some critics in Washington?”…

Romney’s already given the response to this, and simply needs to reiterate (my paraphrase):

“I’m simply recognizing reality, something you, Mr. President, had better learn to do. The Supreme Court says this is a tax. This is a tax, no matter how often you or your spokespersons or your party deny it. And that fact makes you the largest tax raiser in history, levying the largest regressive tax on those who can least afford it. I’m not abandoning a principle when I acknowledge a legal fact. You still seem to be in denial. On this, and on growing the economy, and on creating jobs, which your new tax is guaranteed to damage further.”

You forgot one thing, Allah, and it is a pretty big one.

If you go by what Obama told the SEIU convention early in his campaign, he not only flipped on the mandate but he is in fact in favor of single payer national health care, but he knows it can’t happen all at once, it will take 10-15 years to get there eventually.

This is the real purpose of his current program, to get the ball rolling toward an eventual single payer govt. run system nationwide.

In my opinion, that is the real issue here, his “Fundamental Transformation of America”.

So in other words…You’re just like Romney, but without the jobs.

Sheesh. If we have to have a Romney, let’s at least have a competent one.

“We saved an auto industry. That saved hundreds of thousands of jobs here in Ohio,” Obama said. “We passed a health care law that’s going to mean security for Ohioans who already have health insurance and give Ohioans who don’t have health insurance an opportunity to get affordable health care.”

Geez, this guy is shameless. The auto bailout cost the taxpayers at least $25 billion(and possibly way more than that) that we’ll never see again. Ohio’s economy started to recover after John Kasich, a Republican, was elected governor. Obamacare does NOT mean security for people who already have health insurance. If that was the case, why issue 1500 waivers so people don’t lose their coverage? Why is it estimated that tens of millions of Americans will likely lose their coverage once the law is fully implemented?

I still wish Romney would have just denounced the mandate as a mistake instead of what was right for MA but he didn’t so we’re left with these kinds of arguments.

Fortunately – as Ace is fond of pointing out recently – the low information voters who will decide this election won’t follow the Byzantine machinations of the mandate and ObamaCare vs RomneyCare.

During his presidential campaign, then-Senator Obama was quite critical of the Bush administration’s uses of signing statements telling the Boston Globe in 2007 that the “problem” with the Bush administration “is that it has attached signing statements to legislation in an effort to change the meaning of the legislation, to avoid enforcing certain provisions of the legislation that the President does not like, and to raise implausible or dubious constitutional objections to the legislation.” Source

I don’t think Romney can just disavow that Mass. health care plan. He might as well stick to his guns. And he is right about the fact that the states can do things the federal government can.

The larger point is Romney is not the one who on a single party line vote shoved an unpopular health care bill down the throats of the entire country. His bill was just 70 pages long, Obama’s is 2700 pages long with thousands of pages of new regs, cuts in Medicare, tax increases on all sorts of medical devices and a huge expansion in Medicaid.

Why does Obama “evolve” on an issue, but Romney flip-flops?

Top 10 Obama flip-flops.

Voted against increasing the debt limit; then supported raising it.

Campaigned against the Bush tax cuts; then extended all of them.

Promised to cut the deficit in half by the end of his first term; then proposed trillion dollar deficits.

Vowed the unemployment rate would be below 8% if his stimulus was passed; but then it broke 10%.

Promised shovel ready jobs; then admitted they weren’t shovel ready.

Said if you like your health plan you can keep it; but then threw seniors off Medicare Plus and employers are now saying they’ll dump people onto the public exchange.

Promised to have health care negotiations on live TV, but then reversed himself.

Indicated Bush violated the Constitution; then carried out warrantless wiretaps, indefinite detentions, secret renditions, quadrupled drone attacks, and kept Guantanamo Bay open. Voted against the Patriot Act, but then supported its extension.

Said lobbyists wouldn’t work in the White House; then gave them waivers to work there.

Vowed to take public financing for his 2008 campaign; then refused public financing when he realized he would receive more money without it.

would be a rather mild critique of these usurpers.

Criminals, one and all.

obama has been kicking us in the head and spitting on us since election day. none of our “representatives” has done one darn thing to stop the blows.
romney’s talking about gut punches. i wish i was being gut punched, obamas down to ripping out my gonads for heavens sakes.

“Us”?

Chuck Schick on July 6, 2012 at 5:25 PM

Lets please ignore facts and details since they don’t coincide with zerocommiebama’s talking points and philosophy in general.

If you persist you must register immediately with the government as a dissident so the drones can properly monitor you. (I don’t mean flying civilian spy contraptions, I’m talking about the government nannies).

….and by the way, the private sector is doing fine.

There is a DIFFERENCE between what a sovereign state may mandate of its citizenry and what the federal government is empowered to mandate of its citizenry.

THAT’S WHY ROBERTS REWROTE THE STATUTE AS A TAX RATHER THAN A MANDATE.

One would expect a ‘Constitutional scholar’ and former Con Law professor to be able to make the distinction.

thatsafactjack on July 6, 2012 at 5:26 PM

It is nothing new, Barry has been killing small business and small business owners.

bayview on July 6, 2012 at 5:23 PM

Drudge has a story up about how he killed roll your own cigarette businesses with this transportation bill. Apparently some paragraphs were added at the last minute. However, I think Mush Mouth McConnell voted for it too.

Obama is a big fan of people being unemployed and on disability because their unemployment benefits ran out.

Philly on July 6, 2012 at 5:27 PM

More flip/flops from The One: promised all bills would be posted for 72 hours before he signed them (broken); promised not to use signing statements (broken); said he didn’t have the authority to implement the DREAM act (did it anyway) ; promised he’d close Gitmo (broken); promised to have the “most transparent administration in history” (broken beyond the point of all repair) and on and on. The only thing that he said he would do that he actually has done is to fundamentally change America from a superpower to an emerging third world country.

I’m not clicking that! I might get the Commie Cooties.

Only in the mind of a moron. Obama owns Obama-mandate-tax-care. Mitt’s going to sign the bill repealing it. The GOP Primary is over, Loser.
