Video: The freaky triple deaky San Diego fireworks accident

posted at 8:56 pm on July 5, 2012 by Allahpundit

To cleanse the palate. I was going to do a post on the Higgs boson, but what would you rather spend time on? Reading a dummy like me try to find insight about a fantastically complex matter of particle physics or watching the single most awesome 15 seconds of fireworks that you’ll ever see? The bad news: The crowd apparently was bummed that hours of waiting outside paid off with less than half a minute of sparkly fun goodness. The good news: I’m reasonably sure that this is going to be the first Instagram pic to win a Pulitzer. Looks like a sexy space amoeba descending to Earth to spread love and music and hallucinogens and maybe a radioactive pathogen that’ll kill us all. Can’t wait to see which band buys the rights to it as cover art for their next album.

Exit question: What if they didn’t discover the Higgs boson after all? What if instead they discovered an unknown particle that inadvertently summoned the sexy space amoeba? A point worth considering on a very slow news night, my friends.

I’m sure it’s lovely, but our 4th of July fireworks experience of the past few years has consisted more of walking long distances in the heat carrying folding chairs and/or blankets and then running back to the car when the child/children who begged and begged to go to the fireworks become hysterical once the explosions begin….

San Diego, my favorite place on earth, especially during July and August, but really year around. Been there a number of times. On those 12 or so days during the year in Texas where we have such weather, I always call them San Diego days. The only thing, by the way, I like about CA (since Reagan died).

TXUS on July 5, 2012 at 9:23 PM

I’m bummed out because I missed it because I had to work. I live in San Diego and I see that fireworks show every year from that very spot. This was a once in a lifetime thing and I missed it. Damn it.

NickDeringer on July 5, 2012 at 9:35 PM

OK, so now that I have had a little bit of time to think about this little mishap, what it this accident wasn’t all that accidental? San Diego just told the public sector unions to go eff themselves in the California primaries, what if this was really the Unions getting revenge…

SWalker on July 5, 2012 at 9:43 PM

Well Allah, this is a prime example of “THE FAST-PACED SOCAL LIFESTYLE”. Seeing as we did an 18 minute show in just about 18 seconds, it gives you 17 minutes and 42 seconds to now do something else!

The car alarm sounding in the background was due to the concussion of the fireworks going off. The show was supposed to be choreographed to music.

GarandFan on July 5, 2012 at 9:45 PM

As an SD native, I think the accident is awesome. Didn’t see it though, I watched the fireworks in La Jolla.

What’s worse than Fireworksmageddon?

Those blasted car alarms! Beep…Beep…Beep… Incessant.

I lived in SD for ten years, went to the Big Bay to watch the show a few times. Every time I went I swore I would never go again. Why? The car alarms would start honking the second the show started and would not quit. It was quite maddening. I see some things never change.

Seven Percent Solution on July 5, 2012 at 10:21 PM

Reminds me of a couple years ago when I had to work on July 4th. Some of my coworkers and I went up to our building’s roof to get what we thought was a primo spot to view an almost-always nice fireworks show.

The first few were launched, exploded, and created so much dense smoke that the remainder of the show consisted of seeing occasional flashes of color as it spread throughout the night sky, like seeing lightning from within a cloud.

Yeah, happy [dud] Fourth of July that year.

PatriotGal2257 on July 5, 2012 at 10:24 PM

…so was that Mooch lighting up a phart?

KOOLAID2 on July 5, 2012 at 10:43 PM

cyncook, I see OC already addressed this, but evenings here, even in June, and esp. at the bay or coast, are nice and cool.

I was thinking of going to watch this – I have a “secret spot” with a great view and easy access and parking – but then decided my overall July 4th gloom based on national issues made it a bad idea. And from my back porch I can see the Sea World fireworks (every night in the summer, but a special show last night), Ocean Beach show, and, I was musing, maybe some of the big show on the bay, too.

So I’m sitting there puffing on a cigar, nursing a beer (sweatshirt and jeans), and right about 9 I see one – really big – multi-colored flash lighting up the low clouds over a part of the horizon that corresponds to downtown. Probably the barge out near Shelter Island, judging by the location. Then – nothing. Ocean Beach and Sea World shows were very good and went on for a while.

Didn’t know what happened til I heard it on the radio this morning.

Oh – for locals, my “secret spot”? Aint’ telling, but a hint: this area was leased to the feds for $1/year for nearly 80 years.

Oops…

RoadRunner on July 5, 2012 at 11:08 PM

disa, I grew up here but actually lived in DC for decades. I remember the hideous conditions of July 4th, the humidity.

Even though I know this place, the weather never ceases to amaze. This spring/early summer has been ridiculous – week after week of nearly perfect days. Other locals have commented on this as well.

The spectrum of weather here usually runs from “very nice” to “spectacular and perfect”, so a stretch of perfection is not shocking. But still.

Yes, there are the heat waves and fires in the fall. Best time of year. Turistas gone, kids back in school, water finally above 70 degrees, hot dry weather …… San Diego State co-eds back in force (uh huh). In high school it was a normal late-summer activity to go “watch registration” at State. The fauna were simply not to be believed. It’s even better now, I think. Have given a few lectures in a friend’s class there – serious concentration issues, it’s really ridiculous.

I’ve been lucky to visit many nice places (and a large number of very very unpleasant places), but I’ve never found anywhere as nice as this. If Americans could just come and take it back (and not from Spanish-speakers, but from their own pathetic ex-countrymen), how glorious it could be …..

IceCold on July 5, 2012 at 11:22 PM

Looks like west coast liberals celebrate their fireworks like they do their love making, in 15 secs or less.

ray on July 5, 2012 at 11:28 PM

Buck Turgidson on July 6, 2012 at 7:42 PM

For the last eight years, since retiring from the Navy and returning to San Diego permanently, each Fourth we step out of our front door, set the lawn chairs in the driveway, and watch one of San Diego’s best fireworks shows. Nothing as large as the Big Bay Boom, but no driving involved, and we can actually see two others shows around the area at the same time, off in the distance. Our local show works with KYXY 96.5FM to synchronize the works to patriotic music they schedule, and it’s always well done. A bit smaller show this year than some, but well worth the price of admission.

By the time the show ended Wednesday, it was cool enough to want a light jacket, and there had been high overcast all day. Actually provided a nice backdrop for the fireworks.

It’s a tough job, but someone has to live in the best weather on Earth.
