Video: The Best of America

posted at 6:41 pm on July 4, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Happy Independence Day, everyone! Every single day is a fantastic day to appreciate the many blessings of living in The Greatest Country on Earth, but the anniversary of our independence in particular is always a good time to reflect on the particularly American mix of virtues that have built this fine nation. Pride, hard work, resolve, personal responsibility, a can-do attitude, devotion to family and community, entrepreneurship, self-reliance, respect for the rule of law — I can feel my heart swelling just thinking about it.

That pretty much sums up Mitt Romney’s message for his fellow countrymen on this great day: This is America, dammit, and we do not need to accept the diminished future toward which our current path is pointing us.

It’s almost enough to send a good ol’ thrill up your leg, isn’t it?

Meanwhile, the Obama administration is actively engaging in a campaign to discourage self-reliance and “mountain pride,” in an effort to get still more Americans to sign up for the food stamp program. Hmm… I wonder what possible motives might Team Obama have for wanting more Americans to be dependent on the federal government?

Here’s to our last 4th of July with an un-American president sitting in the White House. May it never happen again.

Chis Rock and his buddies would be totally lost without that screaming sense of whining self-pity. They’d have to start thinking about taking responsibility for their own pathetic lives and that would just about break their precious little hearts.
The other part, of course, is that without those white folks and that declaration there never would have been any kind of freedom for anyone. After all, it was that one little part about “all men are created equal” and “endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights” that pinned the conscience of those awful white guys to the wall and would not let the question die.
And finally, of course, who else but a bunch of evil and flawed and imperfect white guys would sacrifice 620,000 of their own bodies to rip those chains away from those slaves.
Nah! Not important! Silly me!

OmahaConservative on July 4, 2012 at 7:48 PM

At some point the constitution is going to have to be changed. If you read the thing you can’t actually believe we’re living in the same country.

You know, these freakin judges. We have our laws written down for a purpose. We somehow have all forgotten that. They are written so the people know what the heck they are! Now, it’s meaningless. We’re all a bunch of idiots who have no idea what our rights are until politicians and judges “figure it out” for us. We just sit here like mindless robots waiting to be told what we can and can’t do anymore.

“Oh… The court just decided this was in the constitution or that wasn’t!” Oh.. the freaking court just decided we now have a “right” to do this or no longer have a right to do that!”

What the heck is the purpose of the written document? To sell tickets? Why bother to go and see it? To have it displayed? It’s just a meaningless piece of paper with scribbles on it. The real Constitution is hidden away in some men’s minds and we have to wait until they decide to share their freakin constitution with us at the appointed time!

Is that right… which entrepreneurs inspire you?

I disagree with several underlying messages in this video. First, opportunity in this country is no longer a birthright. For earlier generations, birth in the US ensured a certain standard of living for anyone with the ambition and work ethic to achieve.

In today’s America and era of the global economy, only those with the education or training are ensured access to opportunity. The days when Americans had unrivaled access to the world’s resources are over. There’s nothing wrong with sentimentality, but it’s not going to erase this country’s trade deficits or lessen the challenges that lay ahead.

bayam on July 4, 2012 at 7:56 PM

Funny, I thought that Steve Jobs and Bill Gates were the great entrepreneurs and capitalists of our era and exemplars of American exceptionalism. But I suppose if you listen to Glenn Beck, you see the world differently.

Nice list of American virtues there, but you left out the most important one: the recognition that our rights come from our Creator, not from man.

Well since many white Republicans fought and died so that former slaves could be free and that he now enjoys that freedom, I want to know why he has aligned his loyalties with the party of slavery, segregation and racism. Maybe Chris prefers watching his fireworks down on the plantation. Apparently, you can lead a person to freedom, but you can’t make him think!

It is a great video. I am glad to hear someone talk positively about the USA, rather than the old negativity that you get from the left almost nonstop.

Voter from WA State on July 4, 2012 at 6:53 PM

The Reagan approach – exude a positive message about America and her future. Let us se what we can be – it’s called putting forth a vision. The people will respond. Romney should continue such.

BHO tried, and although it worked somewhat (he got elected), his message was more fluff, and a lot about him, and easy to see through if one was not blinded by him being “the first black” something or other. He was/is such a fake.
