Video: Don’t ask questions when you don’t want to hear the answers

posted at 2:01 pm on June 27, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

When I first heard that S. E. Cupp would join three progressives in MSNBC’s new roundtable afternoon show, I wondered why she would enter a situation in which one side was so outgunned.  Answer: Because she enjoys outgunning them, that’s why.  This clip from The Cycle yesterday features Touré in his usual smug, elitist attitude attempting to psychoanalyze a 23-year-old Young Republican, saying that he felt the need to put such an unusual specimen “on the couch.”  Cupp interjects at one point by exclaiming, “Are you seriously treating him as a science experiment?”, to which Touré responds to the effect that he did the same with Cupp, too.  However, after Touré’s Kaelian introduction, young Alex Schriver proceeds to demolish Touré’s assumptions — and remind MSNBC viewers that Obamanomics has done the most damage to the youngest generation of voters:

The Corner’s Michael Walsh pronounces this “comedy gold“:

Truly a classic of the smackdown genre. On one side, a typical sneering MSNBC lefty, secure in his political prejudices and not expecting any back talk; on the other, a young man armed with the facts to displace Toure’s smug “narrative.” Comedy gold!

And Alex didn’t even get to ObamaCare — a program that forces younger people to buy high-priced comprehensive insurance plans they don’t need, which then subsidizes the health insurance coverage of middle-aged and older people that can then pay less for their plans.  Just imagine if Alex had the whole hour to himself and Touré.

Update: I didn’t get Alex’s first name when I wrote this post — it’s Alex Schriver, and he was nice enough to tweet the link to the post:

Alex is the chair of the College Republican National Committee.  They’re in good hands.

I’m proud to have Alex in charge of the CRNC, a group which I lead at the local level at SMU. Unfortunately, the youth conservative vote is still mainly Ronulans. Another fun fact about youth voters though: The 18-29 group is one of the most pro-life voting blocs out there, more so than any other age group aside from the 65+ folks, and are also the most likely to say it should be illegal in all circumstances.

vegconservative on June 27, 2012 at 2:11 PM

Being a Ronulan is a decent start, compared to liberal koolaid swilling that was prevalent a mere decade ago. Even better, young voters are nearly immune to trutherism and anti-Jewish rants. Most of them will make into fine conservatives once they lay off weed and settle down with mortgages and families.

Interesting you bring this up. My daughters, 17 & 13, both have strong beliefs against abortion. And while I am very pro-life, I didn’t even discuss it with them the first time I learned of their strong beliefs. We were in the car a couple years ago talking about a partial birth abortion that left the baby alive (my oldest daughter had learned about it during one of her classes). Both of the kids were dumbstruck that anyone would kill their child. After going through the pro-choice arguments they still didn’t agree with abortion.

That being said…they both support gay marriage..so….. maybe 18-29 year old voters support that heavily too.

Who is more likely to have an abortion, a liberal or a conservative?

Who is more likely to raise conservatives?

The “Roe effect” will just keep getting stronger. That’s why the left is so pro immigration, they need immigrants to keep their numbers up.

The biggest problem young people have making voting decisions is they don’t grasp that fighting for what’s right sometimes means fighting. They want the candidate that’s going to “get along” and “play nice” and “end the rancor”. I’m sorry, but sometimes you’ve got to stand up and argue and fight for what you believe in.

AshleyTKing on June 27, 2012 at 2:52 PM

Toure’s question to Alex was very probing: why would a young person want to be a Republican?

When I first went to college in the fall of 1974, shortly after Nixon’s resignation in disgrace, I was approached by Young Republicans, and I wondered the same thing.

After four years of Carter, and two years of struggling to find jobs while my colleagues who had gone for Master’s degrees couldn’t find them, I found out the hard way why a 24-year-old might want to be a Republican. To be able to get a job, make money, buy a house, and put gas in his car, which Reagan enabled me to do.

Alex is in the same situation I was in 1980, and Obama is this generation’s Carter. Can Romney sell himself as the next Reagan?

It would have been nice if he said, “If you get more conservative when you older, then why are you still liberal at your age? Are you an idiot or something?”

LoganSix on June 27, 2012 at 3:05 PM

Why do you people give any attention or ratings to MSNBC which is full of left wing lunatics? In fact why do you give ratings to any liberal media? I bet half of the rating of these left wing media come from conservatives and yet the same conservatives complain about the power of the liberal media. The first you do to destroy the liberal media is to hurt them financially and you hurt them financially by not giving them rating. I guess you already know this but you people are too weak to resist watching, listening, and reading the liberal media.

Well, first: “Know thy enemy” is always good advice.

Second: Media companies don’t make money on ratings — they make money on advertising revenue.

If you see a product advertised on a leftie Web site, write to the advertiser to explain that you’re not going to buy it because of the loathsomeness of the site they advertised it on. If you like, twist the knife by sending them a receipt for a similar product you bought from their competitor.
