Obama headed to Colorado to visit areas affected by wildfires

posted at 6:41 pm on June 27, 2012 by Allahpundit

The Waldo Canyon fire outside Colorado Springs isn’t the only one burning but it’s the worst. Five percent contained, 15,000 acres already gone, and more than 32,000 people evacuated — including our beloved boss emeritus, whose Twitter feed is now almost wholly devoted to chronicling CS’s waking nightmare. She’s your best bet for photos of what they’re up against. It’s actually not the birdseye pics of the forest on fire that really brought it home to me, it’s this one. Good lord. According to Jay Carney, more than half of the feds’ wildfire-fighting resources are currently stationed in Colorado — and yet, from what I understand, because they’re expecting high winds and possible lightning strikes, this may yet get worse before it gets better. Again, good lord.

As of January, Colorado was among the top five states with the highest net migration. I wonder where they’ll be after this.

Mr. Obama called Gov. John Hickenlooper and Mayor Steve Bach of Colorado Springs, the state’s second-largest city, to get an update on the blaze, known as the Waldo Canyon Fire. “The president expressed his concern about the extent of damage to homes in the Colorado Springs area,” the White House said, “and informed both the governor and the mayor that he plans to travel to the area Friday to view the damage and thank the responders bravely battling the fire.”

The president also asked if state and local officials needed more federal resources to fight the fires. The United States Forest Service, the Interior Department and the Federal Emergency Management Agency are involved in the effort. Seventeen air tankers have been deployed in the Western states over the last 48 hours. Local officials are also battling fires in Arizona, California, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.

Colorado has been a frequent destination for Mr. Obama this year because of its status as a hotly contested swing state, though the president often visits the sites of natural disasters throughout the country.

Obama’s flying in on Friday for a goodwill visit, which would be smart politics under any circumstances now that this is a national story but seems especially shrewd as a subject-changer the day after the ObamaCare ruling and Holder contempt vote. Don’t bother the man with petty questions about mandates: He’s got a fire to fight.

Two vids for you of a slow-motion catastrophe in progress. If you live there, watching these homes burn must feel a little like watching friends die. And yet, one of the memes du jour on Twitter is hoping that the fire spreads just far enough to consume Focus on the Family headquarters in the city. Wonderful. Exit question: If you lived in Colorado Springs and could afford to move, would you? There’ll be more wildfires in the future, hopefully not as bad as this but with no guarantees, of course. I’d imagine that the trauma of living through it would make you want to ensure that it never happened to you again.

Michele wrote this column last week:

http://michellemalkin.com/2012/06/20/how-obama-bureaucrats-fueled-western-wildfires/

…The Obama administration’s neglect of the federal government’s aerial tanker fleet raises acrid questions about its core public safety priorities. Bipartisan complaints goaded the White House into signing a Band-Aid fix last week. But it smacks more of election-year gesture politics: Too little, too late, too fake.

Ten years ago, the feds had a fleet of 44 firefighting planes. Today, the number is down to nine for the entire country. Last summer, Obama’s U.S. Forest Service canceled a key federal contract with Sacramento-based Aero Union just as last season’s wildfires were raging. Aero Union had supplied eight vital air tankers to Washington’s dwindling aerial firefighting fleet. Two weeks later, the company closed down, and 60 employees lost their jobs. Aero Union had been a leader in the business for a half-century….

Obama Hasn’t Spoken to Colorado Gov for 15 Days Despite Raging Wildfires

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney was asked a question today on why President Obama has not further communicated with Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper over the raging wildfires in his state. The President’s last correspondence with the Governor was June 12th, 15 days ago.

UPDATE:

After White House Press Secretary Jay Carney admitted today that President Obama hadn’t spoke to the Colorado Gov. in over 2 weeks while wildfires ravaged the state, the White House rushed out the following press release stating that Obama had JUST spoken with Gov. Hickenlooper.

And when it’s out, HE will take credit for it.

Unfortunately for Barry, word is out in Colorado Springs about his administrations wavering on providing air-tankers last year:

Wildfires are a fact of life here. As bad as it is this year, 2002 was even worse. While losing your home would be traumatic, it can always be replaced.

I went fly fishing in a remote canyon the other night that experienced bad fire in 2002. It is now lush and green with lots of aspen & spruce, can’t even tell that a fire burned down everything just 10 years ago.

He didn’t visit the Texas fire(s) or declare them a disaster area. So far as I know he didn’t visit the Wallow Fire or Monument Fires in Arizona which involved loss of homes. The Wallow Fire burned in excess of 700,000 acres. So people do have a reason to believe he would thumb his nose at states that didn’t pull the trigger for him.

That said my wife grew up in wild fire area and her parents nearly lost their home several times. My prayer go out for those suffering in the Colorado Springs area

chemman on June 27, 2012 at 7:06 PM

We don’t want him here because it’s nothing more than political. Resources are already stretched to the max with law enforcement patrolling neighborhoods where 100-plus homes were destroyed last night, aiding over 32,000 evacuees, and securing evacuated areas. I also understand that all air traffic will cease while he’s here, which will impact water and fire retardant drops from helos and C-130s – and yes, this stuff is being dropped within the city limits on the NW part of town.
Bush was criticized for not landing in NOLA during Katrina, but he immediately said later that he didn’t want any resources pulled away from rescue efforts to support his presence on the ground. Well, the same is true here.

How much money will the taxpayers/state have to pay to get bho snotty hind end out to do ZERO? All the money could be helping firefighters and not having bho get with the governor and a few shake his limpy hand.

Must be week-end time, bho has been really really really busy fund raising and someone told him ‘you better act concerned’? I would bet the amount of money to get bho(all he needs to be with him) on AF1 would pay thousands of firefighters to see to it bho gets his photo op?

Evergreen (just up the road from me) operates a seriously kick-azz supertanker for firefighting. It is sitting on the ground in Arizona, ready to be deployed against these fires. But because of idiotic cronyism and political gamesmanship, the Forest Service and BLM refuse to offer them a contract for this season.

It reminds me of the Gulf Oil Spill when assets could have been deployed… but weren’t, until very late in the game.

As of January, Colorado was among the top five states with the highest net migration.

From the article linked:

Colorado ranked fifth among states for domestic net migration, in total numbers, after Texas, Florida, North Carolina and Washington.

As a percentage of population, COlorado would rank first.

“Many of the buyers I have worked with tell me it is Colorado’s low property taxes, quality of life pertaining to crime and traffic, our many outdoor activities and relatively low housing prices,” she said.

Low housing prices? The average home price here is nearly $75k above the national average. And I don’t think the fires will change that. The 2002 fires had no effect on property values.

VorDaj on June 27, 2012 at 7:36 PM

Good thing Obama cut the air tanker fleet last year! It shored up his environmentalist base. The people of Colorado are paying for it now. I wonder how that will pay off around election time?

MeAlice on June 27, 2012 at 7:36 PM

This is what all Presidents do when disaster strikes. And that’s fine. People are suffering so politicizing it worse by throwing insults doesn’t help. Just pray for those who are being affected.

MikeknaJ on June 27, 2012 at 6:52 PM

Well I know he flipped off Texas, and I think Nashville got the cold shoulder too.

Some animals states are more equal than others. –Barack Orwellian Obama

And yes Colorado (and Florida) need prayers.

Wow. And there is this pic of Falcon Stadium dwarfed by the fires and smoke.

Saying prayers for your family and your home’s safety.

Ditto here.

Too bad Texas isn’t a swing state.
We got ignored by the Child.

Obama’s flying in on Friday for a goodwill visit, which would be smart politics under any circumstances now that this is a national story but seems especially shrewd as a subject-changer the day after the ObamaCare ruling and Holder contempt vote.

Haven’t Coloradans suffered enough without an angry arrogant jug-eared Kenyan deciding to get in the way of firefighting operations? There was a legitimate reason why GWB didn’t rush into the Gulf Coast in the wake of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

The one thing Coloradans can rely on is federal funding. It is a swing state. The filthy lying bastard in the White House wouldn’t dare tell them to go to hell the way he has red-leaning states during their wildfires and other natural disasters.

Happy Nomad on June 27, 2012 at 7:44 PM

Panderer-in-chief. I hope he doesn’t pull away necessary personnel, but we all know he will.

txhsmom on June 27, 2012 at 7:49 PM

We had a lot of water , flooding , property damage etc .
Gov Scott ( Fl R ) asked for federal aid . We may get
some as Fl is a toss up in an election year or pos will
be his usual nasty self .

Obama headed to Colorado

My God, aren’t they facing enough trouble?

faraway on June 27, 2012 at 7:54 PM

Fly in and check out the emergency in the swing state.. ignore the wildfires that were raging in Texas.

Sounds about right. He’s such a vile person.

ButterflyDragon on June 27, 2012 at 7:55 PM

Having had to evacuate twice now due to fires here in San Diego county, I can relate. And believe me folks, this is a very trying experience. Relief that you (and hopefully family) are safe, but worried sick about friends and neighbors, not to mention the things you had to leave behind.
My prayers go out to all in the fire area.

That stuttering clusterfrack of a miserable tyrant needs to GTFO of my state.

jawkneemusic on June 27, 2012 at 7:33 PM

Yeah, and I can’t believe he’s passing up Aspen, his idea of Mecca in Colorado. Well priorities are priorities, and getting your photo op with a bunch of first-responder brass, who he’s taking off of their real jobs to be props for him, is one of those priorities.

Sorry that even your airspace has to suffer this fool.
