Abandon ship: Obama pal Claire McCaskill skipping Democratic convention

posted at 4:01 pm on June 26, 2012 by Allahpundit

I don’t get it. Why wouldn’t a first-term Democratic incumbent up for reelection in an increasingly red state want a photo op with the Unicorn Prince?

Claire McCaskill will not be attending the Democratic National Convention in Charlotte, a McCaskill aide confirmed to TPM Tuesday. McCaskill joins a list of vulnerable Democratic politicians whose home districts are hostile ground for President Obama and who will be steering clear of the convention.

“In years when Claire is on the ballot, she has historically not gone to the convention,” the aide said, “because she believes it’s important to stay in Missouri to talk to voters.”

Turns out she didn’t go to the convention in 2004 either when she was running for governor, but c’mon. McCaskill’s no ordinary Democrat when it comes to Obama: She was among the first senators to endorse him over presumptive nominee Hillary Clinton in 2008, doing so just five days after Hillary’s big win in New Hampshire. That was a major vote of confidence in him coming from a key swing-state senator and prominent woman pol; Team Clinton “aggressively sought” her endorsement at the time but McCaskill stuck with Hopenchange. As recently as last October, notes National Journal, she was defiant in standing by her buddy O:

Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., makes clear to the St. Louis Beacon that she won’t be running and hiding from President Obama, even as she faces a tough reelection bid in a state the president’s almost certainly not going to win.

McCaskill said she will be asking Obama to stump for her and help her raise money, but added that she doesn’t always agree with him.

Vulnerable Democrats in comparable positions should take notice. Opponents will tie McCaskill to Obama no matter what she does: She was a major surrogate in 2008 and there are plenty of photos of the two for TV ads (Republican John Brunner has already run one tying the two together). Running away from Obama will only generate negative press coverage (when McCaskill missed an early October Obama fundraiser, that was a story).

Eight months later, here she is running away. I wonder what finally convinced her. Was it his gay marriage “evolution”? She conspicuously refused to join him in endorsing SSM last month, preferring a federalist punt instead. Maybe it was the terrible May jobs report and the prospect of no relief in sight? Or was it his new amnesty-by-fiat DREAM policy? Or was it the cumulative effect, leading to a dim awareness on her part that the words “Obama” and “good news” haven’t appeared together in a sentence in years?

Exit question: How many convention cancellations does this make? McCaskill, Manchin, Tester, Matheson, Tomblin, Rahall, Critz — who else? Good lord. No wonder they’re moving to a smaller venue. At this rate, Obama, Biden, and OWS will be the only ones there.

Update: Dan McLaughlin: “If this many in his party were bailing on attending the convention of an incumbent GOP POTUS, media would spin it as sign of his extremism.”

Yeah that is a sure sign that Obama is going to win re-election. It is has been well observed throughout all Presidential eelctions that when the President own party members flee from him during his re-election campaign, it is an abosulte certainty that he is going to win re-election and wins big… So that is great news for Obama.

Meanwhile the GOP Convention is attracting people from all ends of the political spectrum. We’ve even got the New Black Panther Party “threatening” to show up.

As for Claire Bear, this desperate last ditch attempt to distance herself from The One ain’t gonna work. She’s a goner in November. What was it? 71% of voters in her state voted against Obamacare when they had a referendum on the ballot not that long ago? Think that might be a bad omen for her reelection chances?

Same here. This after receiving the generic templated responses to my emails.

As someone has already pointed out, Claire was among the first to get behind Obama in the primary. She’s made the pivot to the center in the election year, but she was a rubber stamp on every major vote, and will continue to be if Missourians are fooled. I highly doubt that will happen. That Obamacare vote will be enough.

Steelman, Akin, Brunner…any one of these 3 will take her down as long as the primary doesn’t get too bloody.

It’s going to be enough to make us laugh when she starts spouting off that she is ranked 50th most liberal, or whatever it is, in National Journal so far in 2012. I expect to have it crammed down our throats in debates and ads.

Meredith on June 26, 2012 at 4:57 PM

Want a good laugh? Just got an email from John Fn Kerry this afternoon. Apparently the Dems right hand doesn’t know what the left hand is doing.

Here’s what Kerry says about his BFF Claire ………

I know a thing or two about deceitful attack ads — and the last eight years we’ve all learned something pretty fundamental about stopping them in their tracks: you need the resources to respond right away. Forewarned is forearmed.

And now my friend Claire McCaskill is getting ready to hit back against the same types of people who came after me in 2004 with the reprehensible Swift Boat ad. Claire knows they’ve turned their sights on her and on Missouri, and she needs our help now.

Let’s be clear about one thing: Claire has spent the last six years fighting to protect taxpayers and hold government accountable. She was critical in the fight to end secret holds, so special interest groups couldn’t subvert the will of the people. And, Claire made sure that veterans would receive the same education benefits that her father received when he returned from World War II.

In fact, it’s because she’s fought so diligently for hard-working families that special interest groups desperately want to replace her with a Republican ‘yes’ man.

The Dems are one huge clusterfark heading into the abyss.

…the words “Obama” and “good news” haven’t appeared together in a sentence in years?

How’s this? Nov. 7, 2012 — “Good news: Obama defeated!” Oh, may it be so!

Now, on the far off chance that Mr. Obama does manage to get re-elected, what goes on behind closed doors with all of those Democrats who ran as far away from him as possible prior to the election??

According to the FEC.gov website, 5 Republicans filed financial reports for the March reporting period to run against Senator Claire McCaskill in the August 7th Primary in Missouri.

These Republican Senate Candidates are:

W. Todd Akin

Jerry Garth Beck

John Brunner

Mark Stephen Memoly

Sarah H. Steelman

If you live in Missouri, please let us all know which Republican Candidate would be the best one to DEFEAT Claire McCaskill.

A Republican needs to win this seat in order to help to get a Republican Majority in the U.S. Senate.

Sure hope a majority of the Show Me State’s voters will be distancing themselves from her at the ballot box in November.

Seems like the (D) behind their names stands for Demoralized.

Poor things.

Are the Clintons coming?

Could you see Bill having a “heart spell” at the last minute and the two of them bowing out?

Wethal on June 26, 2012 at 4:41 PM

You have to ask that first question about Bill?

Look for more Democrats to dig their heels in as the wilderness gets closer and closer.

Nice try, skank. You won’t be able to wipe Obama off your chin that easy.
