Kurtz: Yeah, that NBC video on Romney’s WaWa visit was pretty doggoned deceptive

posted at 2:01 pm on June 25, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Why not close the loop on what should be a rather humiliating moment for NBC News?  Howard Kurtz reviewed the WaWa clip and the non-apology from Andrea Mitchell that aired in two separate episodes on MSNBC, and for which NBC News still has not apologized, either to its viewers or to Mitt Romney.  Newsbusters has the clip from CNN’s Reliable Sources and the transcript:

KURTZ: But as first pointed out by a blogger named Sooper Mexican, here is the problem. That clip was deceptively edited. Romney had started out talking about a doctor being entangled in government paperwork. And here is how the supermarket anecdote actually ended.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

ROMNEY: There’s your sandwich. It’s amazing. People in the private sector learned how to compete. It’s time to bring some competition to the Federal Government.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

KURTZ: So Romney wasn’t amazed by the touch screen, but by the contrast between a supermarket chain and the government. That kind of editing is enough to give you indigestion.

Now, Andrea Mitchell played the full sound bite the next day, but expressed no regret for the earlier editing.

I’m curious as to why NBC hasn’t apologized yet for the deception.  Had this been aired by Ed Schultz, Rachel Maddow, or Lawrence O’Donnell, no one would have expected anything different, but they are explicitly opinion hosts.  Andrea Mitchell hosts a show on MSNBC but also works as a reporter for NBC News, and that directly relates to the network’s credibility rather than the cable channel.  I’m fairly certain Mitchell didn’t edit the video herself, and may not have known the larger context of Romney’s remarks — the first time around.  By the time she aired the clip a second time, though, Mitchell obviously knew the larger context, and yet offered no explanation of how NBC got it wrong the first time except to claim that she didn’t have the time to air Romney’s remarks in their proper context.

That’s pretty shameful, and it’s not just conservatives who have noticed it now.

Update: My friend John Ziegler points out in an e-mail that this isn’t the first time Mitchell has done this:

Looking like a pattern, huh?

Never apologize for being who you are.

Even if you’re a low-down, lying dog.

Because it’s who you are.

I’m curious as to why NBC hasn’t apologized yet for the deception.

It’s pretty obvious. Because they’re not sorry. And they don’t think they did anything wrong. Well, aside from getting caught.

Because they still think they still have credibility – an ever-shrinking sliver of credibility mind you – but they still think they have it.

Deception has always been the tool of State control. It only follows that it is a tool of Statists in the press, who long for that kind of life.

I’d be much more surprised if the Bolshevik pigs in the MSM actually did value the truth.

One could concede that this sort of thing is coincidence or a “mistake” if we ever saw any LSM outlet run a “deceptive” video on Obama or some other democRAT.

But that never happens.

CherryBombsBigBrownBeaver on June 25, 2012 at 2:15 PM

This is just par for the course for the Dems and their operatives in the MSM. Throw whatever you can against the wall and see what sticks. They do this sadly because a lot of their audience is clueless and just nod their heads in agreement. Remember when SNL had the skit about Palin being able to see Russia from her house? She never said that yet the typical lefty thinks she did. Andrea Mitchell won’t apologize because her audience might infer from that that PERHAPS she might have done something wrong. Since the average MSNBC viewer (a shrinking demographic) is pretty stupid she gets away with it. Being a lefty hack means never having to say you’re sorry.

First, it was the Georger Zimmerman 911 tape, then the Romney tape.

(Reuters) – Lawyers for Jerry Sandusky sought a mistrial before his conviction for child sex abuse on the grounds that prosecutors showed jurors an inaccurate version of a bombshell NBC News interview with the former football coach, and the mistake may now form part of the basis for an appeal.

I haven’t followed the Sandusky trial, but I find it interesting that once again, NBC has a problem with tape editing.

Not to sure why the crazed over at MSNBC should be excused with an “we expect it” shrug. I think humans are expected to be honest, or try. Are media leftists to be forgiven their lies and everybody else owes the truth?
Good to see the hag Mitchell called out, though there is little difference in one gutter from another.

susietwo on June 25, 2012 at 2:49 PM

Technically that’s true, it was not “out-of-sequence”, but they picked up Governor Romney in the middle of a topic, and cut him off in the middle of a sentence.

Jay Lenno has been having fun with this lately, making it look like both little Bammie and Governor Romney have been saying all kinds of wacky things. I wonder if perhaps budget cutbacks at MS/NBC have forced Jay Lenno to share video editing staff with the news operation?

slickwillie2001 on June 25, 2012 at 3:23 PM

Clearly this was deceptive editing, and clearly Romney wasn’t expressing wondercand awe at th Wawa’s way of operation, he was using it as an illustration. BUT what if it wasn’t the case? What if he really was going, “wow check out this new fangled device.” perhaps it is becausecI am too wealthy and out of touch, butvI have never heard of a Wawahs before this story, nor have I ever seen a restaurant serving food this way. They don’t have such things at the high end places I eat, like the locally owned diner, or Subway, Burger King and such.

burserker on June 25, 2012 at 4:53 PM

Know what ends decpetive BS from media???

Huge FCC fines.

Networks bend over backwards over terms, words, images to never be allowed if there is even the threat of a fine attached to it.

Use the “fairness” club over their heads. Between losing ad $$$’s + audience – Networks would be forced to clean house or… go the ReasonTV route.

And thats been a real money maker right there///sarc

That was the day, seriously, that Obama’s sky high approval numbers started to fall in the Gallup Daily Tracking poll.
