Muslim Brotherhood candidate wins Egyptian presidential election

posted at 12:31 pm on June 24, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Well, this should make the Middle East a calmer, more rational place … right?

Muslim Brotherhood candidate Mohammed Morsi has won Egypt’s presidential runoff, the country’s election commission said Sunday.

Morsi’s supporters, packed into Tahrir Square, were seen celebrating, dancing and waving flags after the result was announced.

Morsi won by a narrow margin over Ahmed Shafiq, the last prime minister under deposed leader Hosni Mubarak. The commission said Morsi took 51.7 percent of the vote versus 48.3 for Shafiq.

Earlier Sunday, Egyptian police were ordered to confront any attempt to break the law with decisive force ahead of the results being announced, as soaring tensions in the country raised fears of a new outbreak of political violence.

Hey, not to worry, though.  WWho says we can’t work with the Muslim Brotherhood?  Why, here’s one of their clerics on the campaign trail earlier, complimenting Israel about Jerusalem and telling the crowd he’d like to visit there soon … joined by a few million “martyrs” (via RabbiLive and Breitbart) [see update]:

It’s a catchy tune and you can dance to it, but somehow I don’t see it playing well on American Bandstand.  Note well how the cleric tells the crowd to forget about the world and “conferences,” and that Jerusalem (al-Quds) will be their capital.

I’m a little more sanguine about this, but not because I think Morsi is a closet moderate who will pull a Nixon-goes-to-China move and work with Israel.  The Egyptian military is not likely to take orders from Morsi that risks its funding or its status in the nation.  If the Muslim Brotherhood tries to march on Jerusalem in anything but the figurative, spiritual sense, the military won’t hesitate to depose Morsi and impose its own rule on Egypt — putting the country right back to the Mubarak status quo.  They have already defanged the Egyptian parliament in anticipation of this outcome.  They don’t want a war with Israel, and certainly not with the US, which is what an attack on Israel will bring.  I’d expect Morsi to either play along and be a good little puppet to mollify the Muslim Brotherhood, or suddenly disappear if he doesn’t.

Update: Breitbart and RabbiLive were apparently incorrect about the identity of the speaker. It’s not Morsi, but a MB cleric. I’ve edited the post accordingly, and my apologies for the error. Thanks to Legal Insurrection for the heads-up..

Heh. Sounds like a good time for the Israeli Air Force.

Well, yeah… until that actually happens and the world turns against Israel, branding the move something like “a vomitous act of naked aggression against a peaceful, democratic people.”

Our media will be the first to lead such a charge, with legions of spittle-flecked lefty supporters whose collective heads will be reaching critical mass. Watch for shrapnel.

Just returning from Israel, I would suggest to these people that they should take a look at all of the enemies that have messed with Israel in the past. They are no longer around and nor will these yahoos. All Israel wants is to be left alone. Do not believe the media in what they tell you about Israel. Our Israeli guide told us that it is very important to vote for the right man in November. That right man would not be obama……..

Egypt’s army ruler congratulates Islamist president
Sun Jun 24, 2012 3:14pm GMT

CAIRO (Reuters) – Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who heads the military council that has ruled Egypt for more than 16 months, congratulated the Muslim Brotherhood’s candidate on Sunday after his presidential election win was confirmed, state television reported.

The report, made in a brief headline, did not give further details. The army council took control when Hosni Mubarak was overthrown in a popular uprising on February 11, 2011.

Even superficial changes represent a trajectory. They’re not moving towards greater freedom or individual rights, but lesser . This is not a hopeful sign, either for them, us, or peace in that region.

The Muslim Brotherhood has been around since the ’30′s and have acquired more real political power throughout the Middle East today than they have ever had before. What do you think the chances are of that moderating them in their regional objectives?

Do you even know what their stated objectives are ?

Egypt actually was moving toward more freedom — that’s what caused the riots when they started cutting off the food subsidies and moved toward a market economy. That stopped when the military decided it threatened their socialist control of the economy. The Muslim Brotherhood is just window dressing, sound and fury played to keep people from looking too hard behind the curtain.

Count to 10 on June 24, 2012 at 4:41 PM

I fear neither, because of my personal situation. But I kind of feel sorry for people who haven’t prepared and protected themselves from either and/or both.

Both want to subjugate everyone else, Both have a long history of slaughtering those whom would oppose them.

Islam is pretty much the economic equivalent of Marxism already…. other than the silly ideas about bodily functions that the Muslims have, and that praying to Mecca thing, and that devout Muslims hate the infidel enough to kill themselves as long as they can take out someone else in the process.

Most Socialists, on the other hand are too lazy, cowardly and selfish to blow themselves up to take out some capitalist, just willing to let their leaders do the job.

So, yeah, a sane person would probably fear the Islamist somewhat more than the Socialist.

slickwillie2001 on June 24, 2012 at 7:08 PM

Well, he was pretty crazy, but he had sort of seen the light and was much less a threat to the civilized world than he had been ten years earlier.

But the whole point of this “Arab Spring” crap, and the reason 0bama supports it is to replace somewhat secular leaders with rabid islamist zealots. Same thing in Syria. It isn’t about freedom, and the only democracy involved is giving people the chance to vote for being ruled by theocrats, rather than plutocrats and/or jumped up tribal chieftains.

Putin at least sees this Syria nonsense clearly. The reason he is willing to commit Russia troops, equipment and treasure to keeping Assad in power is that he knows he can deal with Assad, and maintain a Russian presence in the neighborhood of a critical strategic locale.

Once the MB takes over there, it is less likely that he will be able to exert as much, if any influence there. And even if the theocrats ‘play ball’ with Vlad, he knows that they will also be sending terrorists to Russian territories, (just like they will to Israel, Europe and USA) and he will have to deal with those annoyances.
