UN conference calls for economic “contraction” to combat climate change

posted at 7:21 pm on June 22, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

Well, whaddya’ know: Yet again, overzealous environmentalists are calling for major countries to voluntarily roll back the layers of their prosperity because they believe doing so will be of great benefit to the planet’s general welfare (nevermind the planet’s pesky inhabitants, of course!). The munificent climate-change gurus at the United Nations conference this week apparently felt more dire measures than just subsidizing green energy or a global carbon tax deserved a spot on the docket:

United Nations officials refuse to allow observers to read the draft agenda for the Rio+20 conference on climate change, after an earlier draft called for the economic “contraction” in major countries.

“It seems the UN has taken the final pre-conference draft and classified it!” Lord Monckton, a climate skeptic with the Center for a Constructive Tomorrow reported in an email. “We were promised transparency. This is unacceptable.”

A proposal within an earlier draft agenda for the conference called for the “contraction and convergence for over- and under-consumers of natural resources,” CFACT noted.

Altogether now: “Wealthier societies are healthier societies!” We don’t need to go backward to achieve environmental quality — technology, efficiency, and innovation mean that we can move forward both economically and ecologically. I always find it singularly disturbing when self-important bureaucrats prescribe a reversal on economic growth when so many people in this world still live in poverty. Affordable energy and economic expansion are the recipe for lifting people out of poverty, and third-world countries without the wealth or means to worry about their environmental impact are oftentimes some of the worst environmental offenders.

I mean, sure, we could go back to the pre-industrial era: There was no manufactured air or water pollution, everyone’s food was organic and free range, the natural landscape was untouched, we weren’t harried by technology all the time, and we all got plenty of exercise… as we all toiled to meet our basic survival needs and lived beneath much more crushing rates of disease, poverty, and premature death. Yeah, that sounds like good times.

By the way, apparently the term “climate change” isn’t cool anymore. There’s so much science out there contradicting man-made climate change, too many people have come to think of the ostensible phenomenon as less-than-concrete. The greenies needed to update their terminology to stay hip: Global warming, to climate change, to…

In the face of this growing amount of new scientific evidence, environmentalists are not backing down, but changing their rhetoric.

One leader at a meeting related to the Rio +20 conference this week, noting that because conservatives reject the notion global warming, “We don’t use the term climate change anymore. It’s sustainable development.”

Um, there is a long running movement among the left for Sustainability. When pushed they will tell you their goal is a “sustainable population” of about 450 million people… It’s harder to get them to tell you what they want to do with the rest of us or who chooses the survivors. Mostly they claim to rely on attrition through “birth control” (see China) but want it to happen far too fast for that to work.

France converted nearly its entire electrical grid from fossil fueled to nuclear in just 15 years. We should do the same. Announce to the world we’re abandoning carbon in favor of Uranium and/or Thorium. The United States federal storage facility in Paducah Kentucky has enough U-238 to serve all of Americas energy needs for roughly two thousand years.

How the greenies respond to such a proposal will tell us exactly what their true agenda is.

Not understanding that somebody has to make those private jets, and drill for and refine the fuel that powers them, and runs the boats that catch those lobsters. Not to mention the trucks that haul them to their favorite restaurant.

Using “environmental” regulations to destroy the economies of the Western countries while allowing Russia and China unfettered growth is the entire point of all of this. They are going to do through the UN what they were not able to do militarily.

China and Russia are currently on a nuclear power building binge whole “progressive” and “socialist” entities are actively opposing nuclear power in the West.

China and Russia are modernizing and expanding their military forces while ours is cut beyond the bone.

Steel production started a dramatic fall in the US in 2009 with 59,400,000 metric tons produced. Compared that to 101,000,000 tons in 2004.

Aluminum production has been in very steady decline. In 2009 it was 1,727,000 tons. In 2004 it was 2,516,000, in 1990 it was 4,048,000 tons.

Most modern steel mills are electric arc. Aluminum requires large amounts of energy to produce. Back in the day, steel required a lot of coal, this is why the steel mills were in Pittsburgh, near the coal and limestone deposits. The hydro dams of the Pacific Northwest were built to power aluminum mills and that is why we saw so many aircraft plants in that region.

Energy is directly related to GDP. If I want to double production of ANYTHING, I must consume more energy. If I want to add a second shift at the plant, my electric bill goes up. I must ship more product so more trucks consume more fuel. Energy consumption is directly proportionate to GDP. While some efficiency can be gained from conservation, we have already plucked the low hanging fruit in that regard.

Obama is removing about 20% of our energy generation capacity from the grid in an insane fairy tale belief that a combination of windmills, solar panels, and unicorns will make up the difference. The truth is that reducing our energy production will directly reduce our GDP. We have no choice. Increasing energy costs will make it cost prohibitive to add the second shift or to ship more product. Blackouts and brownouts will disable production on the shifts that I already have.

This is BY DESIGN. We are under attack but not by military means. We are being attacked by strangling our energy production while our competitors on the world’s markets face no such constraints.

And the worst part of all is that it will have NO measurable impact whatsoever on the global environment.

crosspatch on June 22, 2012 at 8:04 PM

anotherJoe on June 22, 2012 at 7:57 PM

In fairness to Stewart Brand and people like him, like Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore, that is an old quote. Brand, Moore and others have joined a small but growing movement of honest environmentalists who understand the role energy plays in our society and have begun promoting nuclear energy.

They understand that nuclear is a technology which would allows us to have our cake and eat it too. They don’t want to control our lives like the watermelons do (green on the outside, soviet commie red in the middle). They are willing to tolerate our lifestyles as long as we don’t burn carbon for it. And we have the technology to do that.

http://bravenewclimate.com/2011/10/04/np-nh3-killer-app/

Short version, we are literally swimming in the building blocks of liquid fuels that we use to drive our big-ass SUVs or tugboats. We can harvest carbon, hydrogen and nitrogen from the air itself, make synthetic fuels out of it, and when these fuels are burned, they just go back into the air they were made from. The net carbon release from this process is zero. The feedstock is there, the chemistry is well understood, all that’s needed is an energy source.

The eco-weenies tell us that our SUVs, plasma TVs, air conditioners water heaters are destroying the planet through carbon release. So let’s call their bluff. Let’s tell them that we’ll keep the SUVs, the air conditioners, the plasma screens…. but we will just run them off of something that has the capacity factor, reliability and a density several orders of magnitude grater than fossil fuels but doesn’t release anything into the atmosphere.

Sustainable development–oh, like the sustainable development that flies them first-class all over the world to all the “it” destinations for their ridiculous conferences and pays for their opulent and extravagant accommodations so they can sit around like the scumbag dictators they imagine themselves to be and write up the bs rules with which they want to control the rest of the world by telling us all how we can live what our limitations are? We don’t need no stinkin’ sustainable development, we need them all fired and the UN dissolved.

Y’all might want to read beyond the headlines. The two quotes appear in this article you linked. Read and inwardly digest them.

Lovelock still believes anthropogenic global warming is occurring and that mankind must lower its greenhouse gas emissions

And why must manking lower it’s greenhouse gas emissions? Must have something to do with our well-being?

(4) Finally, about claims “the science is settled” on global warming: “One thing that being a scientist has taught me is that you can never be certain about anything. You never know the truth. You can only approach it and hope to get a bit nearer to it each time. You iterate towards the truth. You don’t know it.”

No scientist said that the science on global warming was “settled”. What you heard was a non-scientist (AlGore) make this claim. And AlGore is a self-promoter masquerading as a scientist. Or thinks he speaks for scientists. The above quote doesn’t deny that the millions of bits of data and extensive analyses of these data strongly support the view that mankind’s activities are causing the warming of the planet.

The Stupid!!!! IT HURTS!!!

Seriously – I am having flashbacks to Atlas Shrugged. The progressive socialists dont understand that this approach leads to economic collapse.

I believe the value of the UN has reached it’s low point. I can no longer see any value the world recives from this organization.

There is no proof in science. Now you prove to me that hundreds of experts (with their millions of hours of training) and all the temperature records, the CEI, and the ice data, the ocean temperature and ocean level change data, are all bunk.

oakland on June 23, 2012 at 10:04 AM

I have a great idea. Given that it is the Western nations that have the best environmental protection laws, and the best labor protection laws, and happen to have the most indebted economies, let’s suggets to the UN that all industry be banned everywhere else, including China and all other low-wage, enviromentally-devistated countries, until such time as the West crawls out of debt servitude and the third world environment recovers.

Win-win.

shuzilla on June 23, 2012 at 10:15 AM

A proposal within an earlier draft agenda for the conference called for the “contraction and convergence for over- and under-consumers of natural resources,”

In other words, “redistribute the wealth”.

RebeccaH on June 23, 2012 at 10:25 AM

These elitist parasites are all the same. “You must sacrifice, but I, your wise and beneficent leader, must have the very best so that I may continue to look out for your interests and run your lives as I see fit.”

The UN has thoroughly outlived its miniscule usefulness. I say, send them to Iran, or maybe China. They can use a little environmentalism over there. Just get them out of our hair.
