Breaking: Sandusky guilty on 45 of 48 counts

posted at 10:16 pm on June 22, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Is anyone surprised?  Even the attorney for former Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky said he’d probably have a heart attack if Sandusky beat the rap:

A jury deliberated into the night Friday the fate of Jerry Sandusky, even as the former Penn State assistant football coach’s lawyer said he might “die of a heart attack” in shock if his client is acquitted on all 48 counts related to child sexual abuse.

Joe Amendola made the comments while surrounded by a pack of reporters early Friday evening in the Centre County courtroom. One asked the lawyer — who also talked about the “daunting” challenge of defending Sandusky — if he would be “shocked” if his client was cleared on all charges.

“Shocked? I’ll probably die of a heart attack,” Amendola said.

Word is already out via Twitter, but no media reports yet.

Updates to follow ….

Update: CNN has its story up now:

Former Penn State assistant football coach Jerry Sandusky was found guilty on Friday night on 45 of 48 counts related to sexual abuse of boys over a 15-year period.

Jurors delivered the verdict around 10 p.m. after deliberating for about 21 hours.

That’s just under a half-hour on each guilty count.  Doesn’t sound like the jury had any doubts, only a horribly large workload.  Sandusky’s bail was immediately revoked and he went straight into custody, and it’s doubtful that he will ever breathe free air again.

Update II: Sentencing will take place at some undetermined point in the future:

Sandusky will be sentenced at a later date by Judge John Cleland. The precise number of years he faces in prison is unclear, but legal experts say it should be enough to lock the 68-year-old away for life. …

The state presented an overwhelming case against Sandusky. It was highlighted by powerful personal testimony from eight victims who detailed, often through sobs and gasps of breath, how Sandusky molested them in Penn State locker rooms, Sandusky’s basement and hotel rooms.

Sandusky often used his access to Penn State facilities and the football program to lure pre-adolescents into situations where they were alone and the kids were vulnerable.

If he gets less than 40 years, I’d be shocked.

Update III: I changed the front page picture to the one of Sandusky being taken to prison.

I got in on the last of the coverage on Fox, but I heard talk about mistakes the judge made and the stupid statement of his lawyer about having a heart attack if his client was acquitted. I didn’t catch it all. Does someone have an update? Will this form the grounds for a retrial?

And I want the FBI doing the investigating, because Corbett sat on this while he was running for governor and collecting campaign contributions from Sandusky’s Second Mile. The investigation didn’t pick up steam until he was inaugurated.

If the leaked e-mails are true, there’s an indictment in the works with Spanier’s name on it…

I’m sure there will be more sordid details divulged for public consumption over the next several months now that Jerry’s trial is over. Maybe I’ll find something within these details as they come out to assure myself that Penn State fans didn’t aid & abet Jerry Sandusky in perpetrating these (expletive) acts upon the young and innocent.

listens2glenn on June 22, 2012 at 11:00 PM

You are being way too hard on yourself. It seems that a lot of the people around him knew something was going on, but I bet a lot of people didn’t have any idea. The ones who should be ashamed are the students that were rioting over Paterno’s firing. He did know, and he allowed it to continue.

..tangentially, I can’t help remembering when Johnny Rodgers got nailed for knocking over a gas station AT GUN POINT back in 1971 and Devaney left him on the NU team. The judge later in the Spring sentenced him to probation and, as Rogers was walking out of court, he asked Rogers to autograph a football for his grandson.

I used to have an intense animosity towards NU football. (I was stationed at Offutt AFB and got a bellyful of GOBI GRED). But all was made sweetness and light when I came back to L.A. in 1972 and saw my alma mater (UCLA) break their win string in the Coliseum in September.

..sorry, I am rambling. It happens when one gets old.

No.Sandusky would never identify himself as Homosexual. Almost all molesters are male who identify as heterosexual, even though they may be buggering young boys or girls.

Statistically, women are not pedophiles; homosexual men are not pedophiles; Heterosexual men ARE pedophiles.

Sandusky may be a monster of the first order, but it’s inappropriate and just wrong to call him a Homosexual.

Prison’s far too generous for this monster.

Thanks again, Anthony Kennedy.

KingGold on June 22, 2012 at 10:41 PM

Sending a pedophile to prison is as close to a violation of the Eighth Amendment as you can get. I’ve got some family around the law enforcement profession and if even half the stories I’ve heard have a grain of truth to them then by the time he meets his end Jerry Sandusky will have wished he was lynched by an angry mob or had cut straight to the front the death row and was given a lethal injection in short order.

“Shocked? I’ll probably die of a heart attack,” Amendola said.

Was this guy trying to cause a mistrial, or does he just want to make sure his client has grounds for appeal based on ineffective assistance of counsel (and hadn’t he already taken care of that by allowing Sandusky to give that interview to NBC)?

Not that I care that Sandusky’s lawyer was clueless. Creepy pedophile deserved everything he got; just sorry his wife wasn’t prosecuted too.

Homosexuals like Sandusky are FAR more likely* to become child molesters, but Hollywood & the Administration keep on celebrating & promoting that lifestyle.

*Less than 3% of the population is homosexual, but nearly half of all molestations are homosexual.

itsnotaboutme on June 23, 2012 at 12:34 AM

No.Sandusky would never identify himself as Homosexual. Almost all molesters are male who identify as heterosexual, even though they may be buggering young boys or girls.

Statistically, women are not pedophiles; homosexual men are not pedophiles; Heterosexual men ARE pedophiles.

Sandusky may be a monster of the first order, but it’s inappropriate and just wrong to call him a Homosexual.

phxconservative on June 23, 2012 at 1:32 AM

Even if what you say about self-identity was true, who cares how they identify themselves?

Male-on-male sex is homosexual, whether or not it’s consensual or legal.

And there certainly are female pedophiles.

*facepalm*

itsnotaboutme on June 23, 2012 at 8:35 AM

Glad you could find the time to turn a story about a child molester into an opportunity to bash homosexuals. Great priorities.

MadisonConservative on June 23, 2012 at 1:18 AM

Everyone in this thread is bashing a man who committed homosexual molestation.

itsnotaboutme on June 23, 2012 at 12:34 AM

I must have missed that nonsense…

What a load of absolute crap. You’re lumping homosexuals in with child molesting pedophiles, as if they are one and the same. I’m not sure where Hollywood is celebrating or promoting child abuse and pedophilia…perhaps you know something the rest of us don’t.

*Less than 3% of the population is homosexual, but nearly half of all molestations are homosexual.

I am dying to see a source for that…And even if that is completely accurate (which it is not) then why are homophobes so scared of 3% of the population? Can 3% of all people really cause the downfall of our military, Christianity, and Western Civilization? That’s some powerfully almighty 3%. Perhaps there’s a stockpile of WFD (Weapons of Fabulous Destruction) somewhere.

JetBoy on June 23, 2012 at 9:04 AM

Found this excellent assessment of the trial on Yahoo News this morning!

Too bad they can’t throw this certified POS into prison general population. If they did, I would have given him, at the very least, maybe less than 3 minutes.

pilamaye on June 23, 2012 at 9:08 AM

people like this filth rarely remain free and active for so long without enablers and those who simply chose to look the other way. so simple really, to not get involved-it happens all the time.

JetBoy on June 23, 2012 at 9:04 AM

Ignoring your straw men & weak attempts to make light of the situation, I’m glad that you asked for references. This was very easy to find:

•A very recent (2000) study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that “The best epidemiological evidence indicates that only 2-4% of men attracted to adults prefer men. In contrast, around 25-40% of men attracted to children prefer boys. Thus, the rate of homosexual attraction is 620 times higher among pedophiles.”
•Another 2000 study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that”. . . all but 9 of the 48 homosexual men preferred the youngest two male age categories” for sexual activity;’ These age categories were fifteen and twenty years old.
•Yet another recent study in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that “Pedophilia appears to have a greater than chance association with two other statistically infrequent phenomena. The first of these is homosexuality . . . Recent surveys estimate the prevalence of homosexuality, among men attracted to adults, in the neighborhood of 2%. In contrast, the prevalence of homosexuality among pedophiles may be as high as 30-40%.”
•A 1989 study in the Journal of Sex Research noted that ” . . . the proportion of sex offenders against male children among homosexual men is substantially larger than the proportion of sex offenders against female children among heterosexual men . . . the development of pedophilia is more closely linked with homosexuality than with heterosexuality.”
•A 1988 study of 229 convicted child molesters published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that 86% of pedophiles described themselves as homosexual or bisexual.
•In a 1984 Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy article, sex researchers found that “The proportional prevalence of [male] offenders against male children in this group of 457 offenders against children was 36 percent.”
•Homosexual activists Karla Jay and Allen Young revealed in their 1979 Gay Report that 73% of all homosexuals have acted as “chicken hawks” – that is, they have preyed on adolescent or younger boys.
•In a 1992 study published in the Journal of Sex and Marital Therapy, sex researchers K. Freud and R. I. Watson found that homosexual males are three times more likely than straight men to engage in pedophilia, and that the average pedophile victimizes between 20 and 150 boys before being arrested.12
•A study by sex researchers Alan Bell and Martin Weinberg found that 25% of white homosexual men have had sex with boys sixteen years and younger.

itsnotaboutme on June 23, 2012 at 9:44 AM

oh and child molesters are not homosexuals. by definition they are not interested in adults- they are sexually fixated on children. they are often married. they are seriously sociopathic sex offenders. it’s wrong to associate law abiding gay folks who have relations only with other adults with them- its propaganda of the vilest sort. it’s bearing false witness against an entire group of people.

and this guy was ignored in action by other presumably heterosexual men- because they viewed him as a peer.they didn’t see him as a homosexual.because he is not- he’s a pedophile.

and the majority of sexually abused children are females raped and assaulted by males. are those ‘homosexuals’? when are heterosexuals going to stop raping little girls and infants? there’s something desperately wrong with heterosexuality that it is the cause of so many sexually abused children. like the dad who beat the tar out of that filthy heterosexual trying to rape a 5 year old. yes, heterosexuals seem pretty sick… i’d tend to your own before casting aspersions.
