Senior Obama campaign official: “We are going to be the first incumbent outspent”

posted at 7:22 pm on June 20, 2012 by Allahpundit

Is this spin aimed at lowering expectations so that they can pretend to be happily shocked later when they end up outraising Romney and his Super PACs after all? Or is the “first billion-dollar campaign,” as we were once told it would be, now so outgunned by anti-Obama donors that they’re honestly trying to prepare the media for the bitter disappointment to come?

It’ll be fun watching the left, whose nominee surfed to the presidency on a tidal wave of money four years ago, complain in November about Republicans buying the election.

“We are going to be the first incumbent outspent,” a senior Obama campaign official told reporters during a background briefing in Washington today. “I think that’s clear.”

The looming influence of outside groups means that “any spending advantage we might have had is erased,” another campaign adviser said.

Obama campaign officials estimate, based on public pronouncements by the groups, that more than $1.2 billion will be spent to help defeat President Obama…

The president’s campaign is on track to raise roughly what it did four years ago, but the Democratic super PAC — Priorities USA Action — has not added much firepower.

“I’m not sitting here with a billion-dollar check in my pocket,” one Obama campaign official acknowledged.

Priorities USA actually did okay last month, raising as much in May ($4 million) as it did in March and April combined. That’s the good news for O; the bad news is that Priorities now has a bit more than $4 million cash in hand compared to … $25 million for Karl Rove’s group, one of many righty Super PACs ramping up for the fall. As for Romney, according to BuzzFeed’s Zeke Miller he just raised another $6-8 million — today, at a pair of fundraisers. Oh my.

Incidentally, if it makes you feel any better about the federal deficit, Obama’s following the same basic approach on spending with his own campaign:

The $39.1 million his campaign took in was outpaced by $44.6 million it paid for television advertisements, employees, offices and other expenses, the reports show. The spending rate is a reversal from the past three months, when the campaign was taking in millions more than it was spending.

In a sign the campaign is intensifying, the $44.6 million that Obama’s re-election campaign spent in May is more than the $42.9 million he spent in the previous three months combined…

Obama has now raised $261 million for his re-election campaign. At this point in 2008, he had raised $296 million.

I wonder if there’s ever been an incumbent who raised less, at any point, in his reelection campaign than he did in his first run for the presidency yet ended up being reelected anyway. In the end, O will probably raise more this year than he did in 2008, but I’m a bit shocked to see him off his pace when he’s facing a real threat from Romney. You’d think his base would be making up the difference out of pure fear, notwithstanding their disappointment that he hasn’t fully socialized medicine or ended the Bush tax cuts yet. Stuff like this probably isn’t a good sign, huh?

Via Ace, here’s a little video candy to celebrate the irony of Team O pounding the table about transparency from conservative Super PACs on the very day that they finally chose the nuclear option to cover up Operation Fast & Furious.

If Obama can use Porkulus money to line the pockets of his cronies (Solyndra, et al) and funnel automatic weapons that it’s illegal for me to own in CA to Mexican drug lords, why can’t he make a small “investment” of a few hundred mil in his own campaign? HornetSting on June 20, 2012 at 7:45 PM

This administration has been the snarkiest, most hubris ridden, arrogant, nastiest, smuggest that I can remember. I’ve never seen the like of it.

Remember the statement Obama made to the GOP soon after he was elected when they were TRYING to work with him? “I won. ” Or how about Obama’s actions and comment to Eric Cantor during negotiations on the budget/grand bargain simply because he wasn’t getting his way? He abruptly slammed his chair back from the table, stood and as he strode out of the door said “Don’t call my bluff, Eric.” Or the fact that Obama has always referred to those members of congress unfortunate enough to have to meet with him and try to work with him, not by their titles, but by their FIRST NAMES, while they were obliged to refer to him as “Mr. President”. Or the fact that he routinely refuses to answer questions from the press…. AT PRESS CONFERENCES. His immediate response when his friend, Louis Gates was arrested in Cambridge DURING AN ADDRESS TO THE NATION ON THE HEALTH CARE REFORM BILL, despite admitting that he didn’t ‘have all of the facts’ castigating the police for ‘acting stupidly’, when clearly his friend was at fault for… being so arrogant he didn’t think he needed to provide officers with ID. The list is LONG.

This administration has brazenly and openly sought means to bypass congress at every turn. When they don’t immediately get their way, they contrive to bypass congress in such a blatant fashion that its almost… but not quite… illegal… right up to and including refusing to perform the mandated duty under the Constitution to enforce the law. In so doing proving that they not only have no respect for congress or the Constitution, but even less for the will of the American people themselves. They’ve done all they can to polarize and divide this nation.

For this administration, after a dismal performance record both domestically and abroad, stunning overreach and abuse of executive power in continually contriving to bypass congress, AND the fact that they’ve been so rude and arrogant to all and sundry at every opportunity, to wonder WHY people don’t wish to give them money and are literally SHOWERING their opponent with funds, has to be the penultimate definition of OBTUSE.

thatsafactjack on June 20, 2012 at 7:46 PM

Everyday for at least 2 weeks now I’ve been reading articles (in places like NYT, WaPo, etc not just Obama hack sites like Politico) trying to convince me that THE President of the United States of America is the “underdog” here. Obama himself even said as much when he went on The View that when “your name is Obama, the race is always tight.” It’s a piece of poor little victim Obama against the mean old GOP tripe. It’s beneath contempt how Obama & his Chicago thugs have diminished the office of the President.

Dark Star on June 20, 2012 at 7:46 PM

The Stimulus was basically a payoff to all his big contributors in 2008. With the House looking to stay in Republican hands and the ever increasingly possible flipping of the Senate, Obama can’t cobble together another payoff of that magnitude so the influence money is staying on the sidelines for the Democrats this election. When it was inevitable that Dems would have a supermajority, there was a lot of influence to be bought, now not as much.

Obama spent 3 1/2 years snubbing his big givers and bundlers, including Oprah Winfrey. Wealthy donors want potential access. Most didn’t get it and now are not likely to return with the same energy.

Additionally, I believe that a large mass of small-ish ($25-$200) contributions is necessary to get to the $1 bil level. Obama did that in ’08, but now, he has to do raffles to get $3 a whack.

I have no idea why anyone thinks Obama needs campaign money. In fact, the only purpose it could have is to supplement the federal cash he is handing out every day.

The media hands Obama billions in free advertising 7×24. For a perfect example of how much the media protects Obama, look at the Fast and furious coverage. The msm is still pretending Obama has nothing to do with it, even AFTER Obama issues an executive priveledge order to conceal the documents!

NO amount of money can buy this type of msm fraud!

The looming influence of outside groups means that “any spending advantage we might have had is erased,” another campaign adviser said.

So I guess unions don’t count as an outside group.

Guess they are just PO’d because they no longer have the uneven playing field with which they have become so familiar. Now other groups can raise money and contribute to campaigns just like unions. The unions have lost their monopoly and the democrats ain’t pleased.

You’ve got a point there. I guess the unions may have lost their monopoly, but the dems still own the media machine. Still an uneven playing field slanted in favor of the dems.
