Oh my: Anti-Romney protesters say they’re getting paid to heckle him

posted at 4:47 pm on June 19, 2012 by Allahpundit

Thank goodness this story came along when it did. Romney said earlier today that he won’t ask conservatives to stop heckling Obama’s campaign, which otherwise would have been the media’s cue for 48 hours of naked concern-trolling about “tone.” As if there’s a single voter in our age of grinding economic malaise who cares about politicians or their hired lackeys being jeered on the trail.

Thanks to BuzzFeed, though, they’ll probably want to stay away from the subject of heckling for awhile:

The protesters popping up at Mitt Romney’s rallies throughout Michigan Tuesday look like run-of-the-mill grassroots liberals — they wave signs about “the 99 percent,” they chant about the Republican’s greed, and they describe themselves as a loosely organized coalition of “concerned citizens.”

They’re also getting paid, two of the protesters and an Obama campaign official told BuzzFeed…

Neither of the representatives agreed to give their names, but two protesters said they were getting paid to stand outside for the rally, though the wage is unclear: one said she was getting $7.25 per hour, while another man said they were being paid $17 per hour.

Meanwhile, about 50 feet away, another protest had been organized by local Democrats in conjunction with the Obama campaign. A campaign official told BuzzFeed they had nothing to do with the other group — which he said he believed they had been sent by the labor-backed “Good Jobs Now” — and confirmed that they were being paid.

A Good Jobs Now spokesman insists they’re not being paid, thus prompting the question of why protesters who are ostensibly committed to defeating Mitt Romney would lie to a reporter by claiming they needed cash to make them show up. Not the first time lately that we’ve seen the left handing out money to get people in the streets for the Cause either.

Via the Right Scoop, here’s Romney responding to the newest beneficiaries of the left’s “jobs program.” Exit question via Lachlan Markay: Isn’t the minimum wage in Michigan $7.40 an hour, not $7.25?

Update: Another good catch from Markay: A woman protester’s getting $7.25 an hour while a man’s getting $17? Pay discrimination is a terrible thing, my friends.

Romney said earlier today that he won’t ask conservatives to stop heckling Obama’s campaign

Don’t understand why you and others are describing it that way. The linked story quotes Romney as saying later in the same interview that he would not ask for a halt to heckling unilaterally.

“I can assure you we don’t believe in unilateral disarmament,” Romney said with a laugh.

“I guess that’s a ‘no,’ ” Kilmeade responded, also laughing.

Romney then interrupted to say that he could be amenable to a joint call for better behavior from supporters.

“Bilateral disarmament, that’s a different matter. But unilateral, no way,” Romney said.

The former governor did acknowledge that it would be “a nice thing” if both sides backed down.

“I know America has a long history of heckling, of free speech, but it would be very nice if we could reach that kind of conclusion,” Romney said.

I wonder what the “money burn rate” is for the Obama campaign if it has to pay hecklers.

I know a gal who is one of the higher-up supervisors for one of those companies that hires and places the ‘living advertising’ sign twirlers that you see in your travels standing on sidewalks and on roadsides across the country twirling signs to advertise for some businesses. You know the ones I mean. They’re usually tax preparers or fast food businesses and occasionally new homes and used car tent sales advertisements and so on. Sometimes they dress up in costumes and whatnot while they’re out at the roadside twirling their advertisement signs.

She told me not too long ago that her company also contracts for selecting and providing ‘spectators’ and ‘protestors’ and other warm bodies for political functions and demonstrations and the like to augment what the Unions and other organizations provide on their own. She said that the ‘astroturfing’ aspect of their business is sporadic — but always busy during election years. The business gets paid a large sum of money and the astroturfers they provide and pay usually get somewhere between a flat fee of $50 or somewhere in the neighborhood of $15 and $30 per hour depending on the contract and the organization paying for it all. The astroturfers get paid in cash and there’s no ‘job applications’ or ‘taxes’ involved due to it not being a permanent or even semi-permanent job. They just get ‘watched over’ to make sure they do what they’ve been told to do then they get paid cash at the end of the day. It’s incumbent upon the paid persons to report their earnings of their own volition.

She also told me that about a week prior to this last Memorial Day her company gathered up and paid some protestors to be at Mitt Romney’s visit here in San Diego with John McCain. They were not instructed to do any heckling or take any other disrupting actions — they were just given signs to carry and display that were provided by the organization that contracted with her company.

Apparently, there is a whole lotta cold hard cash to be made providing such services to unscrupulous campaigns and other special interests. The majority of the ‘hires’ are cleaned up homeless persons, generic derelicts, and college students. But — they’ve been getting a lot of homemakers and retirees and so on looking to make a little extra money during these hard times these last few years.

karenhasfreedom on June 19, 2012 at 7:47 PM

A woman protester’s getting $7.25 an hour while a man’s getting $17?

The woman is getting minimum wage while the man is “on assignment” from his regular job, probably as some sort of union employee.

Of course, the AFL/CIO has decided to rethink its political activities this year and devote more resources to member services and promoting their union to non-members – you know, the stuff they promised to do with the dues money in the first place.

TfromV on June 19, 2012 at 8:24 PM

OK, watching the 10 pm local fox station news story on Romney coming to Holland MI earlier this evening. The reporter is actually doing her job, reporting, no bias, no commentary. I am quite impressed. 1,000 supporters were there according to her report. I didn’t see a shot of the anti Romney SUV with the fake dog that I heard about on the radio reports.

For those who are unfamiliar with MI demographics, the Grand Rapids area (including Holland, 20 miles to the west), is a very conservative part of the state.

It was also 97 degrees and 50+% humidity at 6 pm when Romney made his appearance.

karenhasfreedom on June 19, 2012 at 10:24 PM

Now watching the NBC affiliate early broadcast that they do at 10 pm. They have a report on WXSP channel 6, which is not the NBC shows channel. So far, they have reported 3 stories before Romney, mostly about the really, really hot weather for here, and dangerous waves and rip current along the lakeshore.

Now after a picture of buckling interstate roads because of the heat, they finally get to Romney almost 6 minutes into the broadcast.

They are calling MI a swing state. They are talking about whether Rubio is being vetted before the speech and airing Romney’s rebuttal on Rubio’s vetting reports.

Interesting, the political map they are showing as they lead into this story shows MI as a TOSS UP, not a swing state. But then again, they are showing FL and NC as toss ups, too. However, they are not showing MI as a blue leaner. AND they are showing IN, GA and SC as pink leaners to Obama. So much for that, too funny.

Back to the broadcast, I had it on pause as I reported their map here.

Wow, they are making that poor reporter stay at the beach in the heat waiting for the 10 pm live broadcast. I feel sorry for him. Nice shot of a flying flag in the wind. “Romney jabbing at Obama about jobs, earning points from supporters with each shot”. They are showing my new Congressman there (I got redistricted into Holland away from the Grand Rapids Congressman Justin Amash).

Then they are interviewed the Dem Chair here in MI with the talking points, “crowd subdued and very small, he refused to address his opposition to rescuing the domestic auto industry, terrible job creation record in MA, or all of the jobs he destroyed at Bain Capital”

They actually showed more of the Dem chair talking on camera than Romney.

They wrapped up with Romney telling the crowd (to cheers), that if they give MI to him in the win column, he will be the next president of the US.

Then the poor reporter out there in the heat wrapped up his live report saying Romney is staying in the Holland area over night and will be in GR (here)tomorrow for a private fundraiser.

You all need to know there are a lot of BILLIONAIRES and multi, multi millionaires in this area, with lots of deep pockets. They are all mostly self made, successful business peeps who created billion dollar industries. I am sure the guest list at that fund raiser is full of these people.

Now back to the anchor desk, and they are showing an interview with Romney about his opposition to the auto bailout. Romney is talking about the managed bankruptcy and saying the Romney would have done the BK faster and it would have saved taxpayers $20 billion dollars. This interview will air in total on Sunday, apparently.

Wow, now I know why the traffic was all messed up this evening while Romney was speaking 20 miles west, some crazy guy was holding his elderly mom hostage and there was a police standoff in the area I was trying to get past to get home. It all ended safely.

Never was a big Romney supporter during the primaries, but he seems like he is getting much better on the stump. Less scripted.

Yeah, I think Mitt’s a lot hungrier than folks had expected.

So when Leftist leaders such as Nancy Pelosi accuse the Tea Party of being “astroturf” I should conclude that she was projecting?

Who was it that said that when the Left accuses it’s opponents of something (astroturf, racism, intolerance, etc.) it’s really just an admission of guilt?

Yes, they are always projecting. To your list add: violent protesting, cheating in elections, and killing off their competition.

OK, now watching the 11 pm reports of Romney’s visit to Holland MI earlier this evening.

The NBC affiliate official 11 pm newscast started with the standoff of the crazy mom who held his elderly mom captive earlier. It was this standoff that screwed up traffic so badly today like I have never seen before and I was caught up in it trying to get home. Fortunately, we have smart cops here that were able to handle the standoff with no one hurt.

2nd story was a drowning of some teen on a jetski and someone drowning in the rough waters of Lake Michigan today. 3rd story was the rough waters and rip currents on all of the Lake Michigan beaches and tomorrow’s conditions.

4th story, finally the Romney visit. They are again calling MI a critical swing state and they are leading off with the Rubio vetting story. They showed Romney rebutting the story in front of his bus. Now they are getting to his speech. They are showing the same map that I reported on their 10 pm version of the news broadcast. And the reporter that they used at 10 pm live is now on tape here, so essentially they just repeated his segment. They are wrapping up the taped segment with another plug of the Romney individual interview that they will air on Sunday. Then they finished up with an ice cream stop with Romney and reported what he ordered to eat from there.

Now for the ABC affiliate:

Started out with the hot weather as the lead off story, but they always start off with a super micro weather report before going to the hard news. First news story is the Romney visit. Apparently Ann Romney spent summers in Manistee as a child. Now they are showing a full minute of his speech. They are showing segments of Romney discussing aspects of health care, building the pipeline and then wrapping up with Romney asking Michigan to give him the win. (They said 400 people showed up at the beach. None of the news reports panned the crowds, wonder what they are hiding, really?) This is the first report showing Ann speaking to the crowd. All of the crowd interviews are asking them about the weather. And they showed Romney glad handing in the crowd, not just the ropeline, signing signs brought by supporters. Interesting. The anchor desk ended the segment saying that Romney and Ann went to the shoreline and walked along the water line (and also mentioned the ice cream stop and refuting the Rubio report about not being vetted).

And this channel is now interviewing the excited ice cream store employees about serving the campaign peeps and Romney. They are now wrapping up with the Dem State chair and showed “15” protestors. I am going to pause that to see that shot again. Just viewed the protestors on pause, nothing stands out, I can’t tell if they are real locals protesting or paid astro turfers.

None of the broadcasters mentioned the SUV with the fake dog on top, or the banner plane that was supposed to be flying with an anti Romney message along the shoreline.

That wraps up my report today of the Romney bus visit here. Only one station mentioned Romney’s private fund raising locally tomorrow.

OK, now watching my DVR of the CBS affiliate out of Kalamazoo, MI.

Their first story was teens drinking and blowing through a stop sign and killing an older man in another car.

2nd story is the “extreme heat”. We don’t often get 90 degree days here in MI, so this is a really big story.

3rd story was the crazy man who held his elderly mother hostage for 10 days.

4th Story, the Romney visit. “turning the economy around will be no day at the beach”. They list the crowd size at “a thousand”. The reporter on the scene is saying this is the first beach side stop in 2 or 3 decades. They are showing a tape of the introduction by the local state senator. Wow, this reporter said FOUR THOUSAND showed up. (I wonder why the abc affiliate said 400, hmmmm LOL).

WOW, this is the first station that mentioned the banner planes. There were 2, one pro Romney and one anti Romney. And they interviewed the Dem state chair who is harping on the auto bailout. I guess they have really focus group tested this subject.

Apparently the “protestors” were kept away from the actual site of the speech, outside of the park. Well that tells me they restricted the protestors to the official parking for this event, which is a few miles east of the park, at the state fair grounds. Apparently the protestors were upset about that but Channel 3 didn’t show any footage.

They are ending their wrap up with an average of the polls here saying it is tightening. The poll they have up (average of many) is showing Romney at 43, Obama at 48. And they are verbally saying that some recent polls show them even.

Then they pivoted to Obama’s speech in Mexico.

That was the last local news station. So there you have an update on the Romney visit to Holland today.
