No deal: After meeting, Issa says contempt vote on Holder is still on

posted at 8:01 pm on June 19, 2012 by Allahpundit

Issa wants extensive documents, Holder’s offering a few documents plus, er, a briefing. If he doesn’t change his tune by 10 a.m. tomorrow, the contempt vote is happening.

This is some game of chicken they’re playing here.

The announcement Tuesday night by committee chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., followed a closed-door meeting at the Capitol between Issa and other Republican and Democratic lawmakers with Holder at the U.S. Capitol. Issa described himself as disappointed and still hoping for a breakthrough…

Holder, speaking in the Capitol Rotunda to reporters, said he had come “in good faith” and that he had made a number of documents, specifically those from February to December of 2011, available.

Asked if he thought he and his department could avoid the contempt vote, Holder said, “The ball’s in their court.”

But Issa said, “Today, the Attorney General informed us that the Department would not be producing those documents. The only offer they made involved us ending our investigation.”

Remember, Boehner’s reportedly not thrilled with the idea of F&F hearings sucking up lots of political oxygen during the campaign. That’s what Holder’s counting on, I assume — that Issa will either find some excuse at the last minute to avert the contempt vote at the committee level or that, if the committee does vote, Boehner will somehow bury the contempt recommendation before it comes before the full House for a vote. (Follow the last link and you’ll see that even if the House votes to hold Holder in contempt, there’s always a chance that they’ll reach a deal on the documents with the DOJ before the inevitable court battle occurs.)

Remind me again why Boehner’s worried about this investigation blowing up. The media covers it sparingly and with the greatest reluctance for obvious partisan reasons, so it’s not as if Romney’s daily stump speeches about the economy will be bumped off cable news. At best, it’s a signal to voters about serious transparency problems at the DOJ over a deadly serious scandal. At worst, it’s something that the media continues to ignoring because it’s potentially too damaging to their boyfriend. It’s not as if the House is busy with other matters right now either. I don’t quite get it.

Holder, speaking in the Capitol Rotunda to reporters, said he had come “in good faith” and that he had made a number of documents, specifically those from February to December of 2011, available.

That’s what I understood the meeting was planned to be, but last statement from Issa following the meeting indicated that Holder had given them nothing, and he only hoped that some would be submitted later today.

When Holder said ‘available’ perhaps he meant he sent them in the mail. Same old crap from Holder.

Does Boehner fear that too much coverage will turn off voters? Hasn’t he paid attention to the reactions Romney has been receiving when he (Romney) has gone on the attack? It could be that a good show of strength (of purpose, morals, whatever we want to call this) would in fact draw more people in for the Reps.

Maybe Boehner is wary because this whole story has just not gotten the traction it deserves. The media may be forced to cover a contempt vote, but will they adequately explain what brought it on in the first place? I guarantee most people have no idea Fast and Furious is anything other than a movie, which means they’ll boil it down to just those mean ol Republicans attacking the admin again.

Or, maybe he’s concerned that they will cover it, just to take the focus away from the economy.

FWIW, Boehner’s spokestool says he is 100% behind Issa and the Committee. LaJeunesse at Fox was pushing the story that Boehner is reluctant to see the contempt vote go down, but he quotes only anonymous sources.

I have long defended Issa and Boehner on this investigation’s slow pace. They couldn’t afford any errors that would allow credible claims of political witch hunting.

But the time for waiting is over. They have already given up on the documents related to F&F itself, and are only looking for the post F&F coverup of the false statements made by Holder’s DOJ to Congress.

Either they go after Holder and Obama on F&F, or admit they are nutless and gutless and intend to let the bloody criminals go free.

How come the Republicans are so politically inept? Who says this is bad for the Republicans the MSM? Of course they say that and the Democrats say that.

The MSM has not been covering Fast and Furious and, if the House has a contempt vote, they’ll at least have to report that. All the Republicans need to do is come up with a concise, coherent reason for this contempt vote and tell people why it’s important. I would suggest Boehner do an editorial in the Washington Times, Post, and Examiner, along with the NY Times tomorrow, in front of the vote and tell people why it’s being held. For God’s sake, play the game. The Democrats wouldn’t worry one bit about a vote like this because they’d be making Republicans support an Attorney General who’s obviously stonewalling Congress on an investigation where we had 2 Border Agents Murdered by Guns that we sent across the border and no one has been held responsible.

If they can’t do something like this, it’s time to get new leadership in the House and not from the Democrats.

It would seem that if Obama and the media go to that well too often, that any criticism of him or Holder is because they are black, it would make people start to think it would be better not to elect black people to any position of power if you are not allowed to hold them accountable once they are in office.

Also, I just heard a black man call Mark Levin and say that if the Republicans would bring up what the effect will be on black people because of Obama’s immigration policy, they would get a lot of black people to vote for Romney over Obama.

I think the Republicans should stop being afraid of black people. We should try harder to get the truth to them.
