Media pretty excited about Romney talking up Wawa subs or something; Update: Deceptive editing

posted at 4:41 pm on June 18, 2012 by Allahpundit

Via the Corner, this is what happens when the big political story on tap for today — a Syriza win in Greece followed by a global market meltdown over the break-up of the eurozone — gets canceled at the last minute, leaving the press to scramble for “news.” Here’s Andrea Mitchell straining to turn this into Mitt’s very own “supermarket scanner” moment, which (as the Corner notes) was a bogus hit on Bush 41 but served the Democratic narrative that Republicans are always and forever “out of touch.” Same here: Romney was taken with the novelty of ordering his sub via touchscreen, mentioned it as part of the wearisome “common ground” small talk that all pols have to engage in when they’re on the trail to warm up the crowd, and now it’s an honest-to-goodness talking point of Obama’s dumb campaign spokesflacks. Second look at a Syriza recount?

I’ve never been to either Wawa or Sheetz and am wholly uninterested in the inevitable Twitter debate over which is better, but I’ll share my own experience with food-service technology that’s completely banal yet also inexplicably captivating. When I was a kid, just a few years before it closed, my dad took me to Horn & Hardart to experience the old-school automat in all its glory. Hundreds of little glass windows with sandwiches or slices of pie on the other side, each coin-operated. It was basically a room-sized vending machine with a team of cooks on the other side of the wall sliding goodies into place as they made them. Even a kid could understand that there’s nothing impressive about that concept — on the contrary, lord knows how long some of those sandwiches were sitting there — but seeing that cornucopia laid out before you and knowing that you could have any of it instantly made it downright amazing. That’s what Romney’s feeling with the touchscreen, I think — instant gratification in placing his order, without the need to even articulate his thought. Goofy, yet endearing.

Update: Go read Sooper Mexican to see what this video looked like before MSNBC’s editors got to it. When Romney says “amazing,” he’s not talking about how gee-whiz cool the touchscreens are at Wawa, he’s remarking upon the contrast between the efficiency of those screens and a 33-page government change-of-address form. Good work, MSNBC.

Here’s the full clip via SM. The bit about Wawa versus the change of address comes in the second half.

Let’s not forget MSNBC’s other heavily edited clip about a man wearing a semi-automatic assault rifle where Obama appeared at a Pro-Health Care reform rally:

There are questions about whether this has a racial overtones [sic], I mean, here you have a man of color in the presidency and white people showing up with guns strapped to their waist.

August 2009, MSNBC’s Contessa Brewer

Brewer failed to mention the man she described was black.

And oh yeah, this was used as a premise to discuss whether someone would “get a chance, and take a chance and really try to hurt him [Obama]“.

And I was at Costco earlier today and all the prices have again gone up by a few dollars on everything. What was $25.50 in the last few months is now $34.95. What was $3.29 is now over $7. It’s like that thruoghout the place and similar price hikes are seen in other stores, per item.

It’s pitiful that MSNBC avoids mentioning reality and instead sounds more like a cooking circle of gossips.

I’m personally Sheetz-centric, but from what I know about coffee drinkers, Wawa supposed to be the superior brew.

And I wish every fast food restaurant had those build-a-sandwich touch screens. No matter how many times you’ll tell the high school kid at the counter NO MUSTARD, they’ll still push the button for MORE MUSTARD.

Andrea Mitchell owes Mitt Romney a very public apology.

Then everybody who was involved in the editing of that video needs to be fired.

wren on June 18, 2012 at 7:30 PM

Mitt should stay away from comedy. This editing technique has been the LSM’s MO for so long now, just get the sound bite out there, have that pathetic pie hole deliver it to the uninformed and dangerous masses. Nothing new. Same old crap, different topic. Andrews dream is slowly becoming the new reality. Average but alert citizens keeping the record correct. The LSM’s days are numbered. Did I mention FDR used a wheelchair ?

Bmore on June 18, 2012 at 7:32 PM

Outright lying. That’s what this NBC report was: a lie. Andrea Mitchell is a gravy sucking pig, and her “producer” who will no doubt be anonymously fired later today, is worse.

This is a scandal. Propaganda needs to be far more carefully made than this slipshod work. Obama should be angry: Is this the quality of toady-work he’s going to have to live with all through the remainder of this campaign? Can’t these NBC people get anything right?

MTF on June 18, 2012 at 6:56 PM

Romney should refuse to go on any NBC affiliated programs unless they retract this story, show both videos, and explain why they thought editing the video was ok. If I recall correctly, Sarah Palin did the same thing, not giving interviews to organizations who were dishonest in their reporting, and by the end of the bus tour, they seemed to be pretty well trained.

Night Owl on June 18, 2012 at 8:00 PM

These “fargin iceholes” don’t care (MSLSD, LSM)… Just put it out there and see what sticks is their motto. They’re pandering to the base trying to write the narrative about Romney just like they do with every Republican candidate.

We already know these characters aren’t interested in the truth. They rarely if ever write retractions to articles, and usually those are only done under great duress.

Wawa is an institution around the Middle Atlantic states having been born in WaWa, PA (near Philly)and operated mainly in PA, NJ, Delaware, NY and now, Virginia. It’s a great business concept that operates 24/7 and is all at once familiar, friendly and efficient. You won’t blame that on the anti middle class GOP will you? You will continue blaming public sector unions for all the mishap instead of blaming the corrupt billionaires who buy our elected officials.

I really don’t get what Andrea Mitchell and the rest are laughing about. Is it really that common to be able to order fast food by using a touch screen? Since when?

Wawa’s had that since around 1999 their web site says, but I’ve never ever been able to order from a touch screen at a fast food restaurant I’ve been to in my entire life.

But Mitchell laughs as if this is the most common thing in the world. She shouldn’t make it so ridiculously obvious that she’s trying to gin up another fake “supermarket scanner” moment.

Next thing you know, they will be slamming Romney for liking technology that likely has decreased the demand for low wage jobs.

Go get a real education that requires the use of numbers and analytical thinking. Then go get the facts behind the cost of goods and services. Then use that education on those facts. You will quickly discover the rise in the costs of goods and services has been driven by the increasing cost of materials, energy and capital The rise in cost of materials, energy and capital are being driven by governmental policies. You want to lower costs? Change governmental policies to reduce the cost of materials, energy and investment capital. It is that simple. You can educate yourself to free your mind, or go on pretending there is some obscure hidden conspiracy.

aposematic on June 18, 2012 at 10:24 PM

Wawa s? Never heard of it , but we have a great Mexican restaurant called La Juanitas that everyone calls La Juas.

The wa wa s Romney should familiarize Andre with is the wa wa wa wa wa her fanboy with the rather large ears does everytime he opens his maw.
Wawawawawawa George Bush, wawawawawa Tsunami, wawawawawawa worse than even I the Great Hussieni thought, wawawawawa crisis in Europe, wawawawa congress, wawawawa they want me to fail wawawawawa!
Andre should familiarize herself with those wawawas

MSNBC throws out the lies knowing most people will never find out it was just another one of their hourly lies. Its MSNBC’s SOP.

aposematic on June 18, 2012 at 10:28 PM

Wow, even Politico is covering Andrea Mitchell’s corruption, in a posting under the headline MSNBC mischaracterizes Romney remarks. Mitchell sure has Obama-egg all over her face today, and New Media has itself another corrupt democrat shill masquerading as a “journalist” scalp. Good!

Rational Thought on June 18, 2012 at 10:30 PM

Well your crew hates spending doesn’t it? The private sector is currently tight fisted and the only one available to spend is the government. Government spending is income to the middle class. Remember my “your spending is my income and my spending is your income” comment.

Someone needs to start the spending to break the gridlock. The only sector capable of doing it right now is the government. But your crew hates that because it goes against everything your backward ideology taught you.
It proves that government does have a role in spurring our economy. But you hate that dont you?

So instead of accepting reality, you will rather double down on your misplaced ideology and drag every American down with it. Shame on you.

Are you really that f@cking stupid? So the gubmint collects taxes from the middle class and then spends their money in the form of entitlements and that is considered income? Wow.

1 of 2 options:

1. He is that stupid. Total economic idiot. An utter ignoramus.
2. He stands to profit in some way, via rent seeking, or is a government official.

There is no other explanation.

MSNBC, huh? Well at least no one saw it.

Good work, MSNBC.

You say that like it was an accident. I’m sure that that is purely for effect because everyone knows better, even the turds who did the editing.

Nice to know that former Pravda editors can still find work.

Now that was a true dining experience. IIRC, in the 60′s we could actually eat there with a pocketful of nickels and dimes. Good times…

I was stuck watching MSNBC at the doctor’s office… the second I saw that clip I blurted out “how about some context, MSNBC?” I then walked into the hall. It looked like a hack job from the second it aired.

Yes it is idiot. Because those entitlement dollars are spent to buy goods and services from small and large businesses. It’s amazing how far the anti government extremists have brainwashed you fools.

Uppereastside on June 18, 2012 at 11:19 PM

Another misinformed and arrogant fool. It’s always the governments fault. If it rains on a Monday instead of a Tuesday,it’s the governments fault. For people who are so anti government, they sure as heck don’t show it by the many politicians they have on their payroll.

Anyway know it all con, tell me how getting everyone to save their money spurs economic growth.

Uppereastside on June 18, 2012 at 9:16 PM

You proved my point. Your request is so fundamental it is like asking for the answer to 2+2 or who was our first president. Educate yourself; you could be successful, contribute to society and be a happier person.

Everybody needs to head to the site: FIRE ANDREA MITCHELL. NBC/MSNBC deceptively edits another video – This time it’s Mitt Romney and WaWa – Hoagies

Mitchell billed this as a George H.W. Bush moment for Romney, but it turns out it was a Dan Rather moment for Andrea Mitchell.

So private companies are incapable of spending money even though they have boatloads of it on the sidelines? Do you really think their reluctance to spend it is due to government spending insufficient quantities of wealth? Could you explain why, of all possible explanations, that’s the one we should jump to?

Government spending on legitimate government purposes is usually worth the money it had to take out of the private economy to achieve that task. Government spending for the sake of spending usually results in bad investments and you can’t prop up an economy on bad investments. If what I just said is unreasonable, please point out where you think I’m wrong.

NukeRidingCowboy on June 19, 2012 at 12:58 AM

International Business Times posted the falsely-edited video in a story titled, Mitt Romney’s Wawa Gaffe: Is He Out Of Touch? I put a link to the Sooper Mexican post in a comment — the comment was flagged as abusive and taken down. I didn’t use any abusive language in the comment. Just the facts.

hepcat on June 18, 2012 at 6:59 PM

They’re having a problem there; EVERY comment is calling them out.

I’m guessing they ban and remove all comments to avoid everyone seeing their incompetence and journalistic bias; but that takes time for incompetents.
