Quotes of the day

posted at 9:31 pm on June 16, 2012 by Allahpundit

The new media rose up precisely because the old media failed to tell the truth. That very first new media breakthrough was about 15 years ago when this lowly little store clerk in a lowly little apartment equipped with his computer and a modem broke one of the biggest stories of the decade. His name was Matt Drudge and the rest is history. And in hindsight, we see that the story he broke was more than just a president having an affair. To me it was much, much more than that. It was about a major old media publication that had spiked the story eleven times. And they knew all about it. Eleven times! Not just once to check their facts. Not twice just to double-check. Eleven times they spiked the story. Why? Because as charter members of that Democrat Media Complex they were protecting their guy. So, when a fellow with a modem and a website found out about this, he decided to tell the truth they refused to tell. And oh how that old media cried foul and they howled. They denounced Drudge as irresponsible and unprofessional and even dangerous and anti-everything from motherhood to apple pie. How dare that nobody from nowhere without a degree or a pedigree try to influence the national discourse. But the real reason they feared him was because he wasn’t beholden to the old media’s machine and the Thought Police. Unshackled, he was free. And a few months later, Drudge got to speak at the National Press Club in DC. He predicted the future in his speech there. He said, “We have entered an era vibrating with the din of small voices. Every citizen can be a reporter, can take on the powers that be….I envision a future where there’ll be 300 million reporters, where anyone from anywhere can report for any reason. It’s freedom of participation absolutely realized.” Thus the birth of citizen journalism, and you are the future he predicted!

Palin was clearly a draw for many RightOnline attendees.

“We’re Palin patriots,” Susan Rodgers of Seattle, Wash., with her husband Prentice, to POLITICO. “The minute we heard that she was speaking, we signed up and bought tickets.”

“She’s recharging,” Prentice said, when asked if Palin was becoming less relevant losing in 2008 as John McCain’s running mate. “She’s reloading.”

“Don’t say that!” scolded his wife, jokingly.

“She’s targeting new opportunities,” Prentice said, laughing.

Also spotted at the Palin speech: a bag, owned by a conference attendee, with a bumper sticker that read, “Don’t Blame Me, I Voted For Palin!”

Sorry to butt in, Axe. Have you considered self-publishing in e-book format? I know several authors that are getting a foot in the door that way.

4Grace on June 16, 2012 at 11:40 PM

My old roommate is in the process of e-publishing on Amazon. He claims it is ridiculously easy, once you’ve actually written the book of course. He hired someone to make him a cover image, and was trying to make sure the book looked right on a kindle/ipad/etc. Getting the formatting correct is the hardest, he says.

Hey budfox, Palin gave her speech to the crowd in front of her, not to a hypothetical crowd over the air. There were at least 2 dozen ” in-jokes”. The content of her speech indicates that she reads LOTS of blogs’ comments threads on a regular basis. What I suspect that she will be doing after November is NOT trying to get a cabinet post, but pushing Romney and his buddies to do the right things, HARD, and relentlessly so.

bigmike on June 16, 2012 at 11:45 PM

I agree. Palin didn’t want to be President and one of the reasons was likely due to the time she’d be away from home.

I doubt she’d suddenly take a cabinet position.

Holding the feet of Romney and the Congress to the fire will be one of her main goals.

LevinFan on June 16, 2012 at 11:49 PM

I’m just starting to read the Honorverse books (SciFi) and I’ve heard good things about The Dresden Files, which I think is fantasy, but I haven’t started reading them yet.

The Talkes of Otori, I think I’ve heard a little about that. Do the characters all have super-hearing powers? If so, I may have actually read the first book, as the title sounds familiar. But it would have been several years ago.

Buckshot Bill on June 16, 2012 at 11:15 PM

Really enjoyed Rendezvous with Rama and the sequel, although the sequel was a bit slow.

You’d like the LaNague Federation series by F. Paul Wilson, conservative Sci Fi with good story line.

I really like Zelazny, his Amber series was one of my favorites. He had a number of other winners as well. Roadmarks and Lord of Light are two of my favorites. Keith Laumer is another good read as are books by Poul Anderson and Clifford Simak.

It’s been a while since I’ve read a sci-fi or fantasy novel. Last one was the last of Zelazny’s Amber series.

4Grace on June 16, 2012 at 11:40 PM

My position is evolving. :) I could do it overnight. Literally. But I never have, because … it feels like cheating. The implication is that the editor saw my work, didn’t think it was good enough — so I published it myself. The flip side: the editor saw my work, liked it, and wanted to publish it. (Me and a few million of my closest friends — this is common ground here. It isn’t self pity, really; when I said “flinchy” I meant it. lol … there’s flinching involved.) The mill is the mill, and you are supposed to make your bones …

But. It’s starting to look like … it is starting to look like an overcrowded world where you need to just get it out there, whatever it’s worth, if anyone is ever going to read it.

I dunno. :/ What do I know? Meh.

Today’s Tech Tip:

How to get Egg Foo Young off your computer keyboard.

1. Use chop sticks to remove the big chunks.
2. Crack open your fortune cookie and use your fortune to floss between the keys.
2. Now take it to Happy’s Chinese Laundy and get it dry cleaned and keep your stub.
3. Pick up the next day before 5:00 pm. They are closed on Sunday.

Note: this method does not work on the old PS/2 style keyboards.

After mocking the progressive campaign to silence Rush Limbaugh, Palin told the audience:

“These are futile efforts, though, to get constitutional conservatives to sit down and shut up. And I know that some of you bloggers, oh, especially recently, are experiencing terrible harassment just because you dared report accurately about a convicted criminal who’s now funded by left-wing organizations. And you’re not alone, and the SWAT-ting must stop, and those responsible for the SWAT-ting must be held accountable by the law.”

SWalker on June 17, 2012 at 12:04 AM

Wow!!..That is some heavy typing!!..:)

Dire Straits on June 17, 2012 at 12:11 AM

While I honesty type pitifully slow (30 or 40 WPM) I do find it incredibly funny that my nephews and nieces all think I type insanely fast. Mostly I think they are just noticing the thunkedy thunk thunk of my typing.

I have an old XT keyboard — weighs as much as my truck. Fam visits and laugh at it … I tell them to press a key … every time, “oooh!”

Anyway, I bet you two would get along better.

Axe on June 17, 2012 at 12:15 AM

What you talkin bout Willis? We’ve all been bona fide certified RAAAAACIST for going on 3 and a half years now…

SWalker on June 17, 2012 at 12:09 AM

I’ve been thinking of having a t-shirt printed up that says:

“Let Me Save You The Trouble. I’m A Raaaaaaacist!”

Dire Straits on June 17, 2012 at 12:15 AM

There are quite a few people like Hornet Sting that have disappeared. I haven’t seen TickleDragon is forever…

SWalker on June 17, 2012 at 12:11 AM

I know Hornet personally, so I know that being very busy personally, she took a break. I dont know about many of the others.
Some left after this became “town hall” and some BS that went down after MM sold the site. Some said- “screw this” and were gone.

One commenter had been gone a while and we found out she was battling cancer. You never know.

Yeah man. You’re right. Cancel my wahmbulance. Apologies. A breach is for “once more” or nothing at all.

The Walrus was Paul.

SparkPlug on June 17, 2012 at 12:17 AM

That’s impossible, because I killed Paul on the Magical Mystery Tour album.

I wasn’t suggesting that nay thing suspicious had happened to them, only that their are a lot of old nic’s that haven’t been seen very other these days. Like baldilocks for example, who as far as I know got fed up with the less than civil discourse of some of the people here.

You can’t doubt the worth of your product, because obviously it motivated you enough to take months of your valuable life to pour into it on spec. So never doubt that. It just has to find the right audience. And to them, it’s strictly business. There is nothing personal about it whatsoever. Either they see an easy market, or they see it as hard work.

I have learned a lot over the past year about BBQ compared to grilling and how the terms have became confused. Also about pepper vinegar sauce vs more tomato type. Me loves to cook. Look at my wife and you can tell.

Man, it took forever to get dinner, but I procured me a Bacon Sundae! Yummy!!!
