Quotes of the day

posted at 9:31 pm on June 16, 2012 by Allahpundit

The new media rose up precisely because the old media failed to tell the truth. That very first new media breakthrough was about 15 years ago when this lowly little store clerk in a lowly little apartment equipped with his computer and a modem broke one of the biggest stories of the decade. His name was Matt Drudge and the rest is history. And in hindsight, we see that the story he broke was more than just a president having an affair. To me it was much, much more than that. It was about a major old media publication that had spiked the story eleven times. And they knew all about it. Eleven times! Not just once to check their facts. Not twice just to double-check. Eleven times they spiked the story. Why? Because as charter members of that Democrat Media Complex they were protecting their guy. So, when a fellow with a modem and a website found out about this, he decided to tell the truth they refused to tell. And oh how that old media cried foul and they howled. They denounced Drudge as irresponsible and unprofessional and even dangerous and anti-everything from motherhood to apple pie. How dare that nobody from nowhere without a degree or a pedigree try to influence the national discourse. But the real reason they feared him was because he wasn’t beholden to the old media’s machine and the Thought Police. Unshackled, he was free. And a few months later, Drudge got to speak at the National Press Club in DC. He predicted the future in his speech there. He said, “We have entered an era vibrating with the din of small voices. Every citizen can be a reporter, can take on the powers that be….I envision a future where there’ll be 300 million reporters, where anyone from anywhere can report for any reason. It’s freedom of participation absolutely realized.” Thus the birth of citizen journalism, and you are the future he predicted!

Palin was clearly a draw for many RightOnline attendees.

“We’re Palin patriots,” Susan Rodgers of Seattle, Wash., with her husband Prentice, to POLITICO. “The minute we heard that she was speaking, we signed up and bought tickets.”

“She’s recharging,” Prentice said, when asked if Palin was becoming less relevant losing in 2008 as John McCain’s running mate. “She’s reloading.”

“Don’t say that!” scolded his wife, jokingly.

“She’s targeting new opportunities,” Prentice said, laughing.

Also spotted at the Palin speech: a bag, owned by a conference attendee, with a bumper sticker that read, “Don’t Blame Me, I Voted For Palin!”

I would love another opportunity to vote for Palin again. First politician that speaks to me, not at me. It is much appreciated.

Divergent sounds interesting, I wonder how deep it gets, philosophically, into the different factions.

Buckshot Bill on June 16, 2012 at 10:59 PM

I just started the second book in the series called “Insurgent” today. And yes she goes where you are looking for with regards to the different factions. But then again, maybe only us political junkies pick up on it.

I have heard other people compare Hunger Games to Battle Royale, even our Ed made the comparison.

Depends on what you like. I like fantasy more than sci-fi and never read horror. I’d recommend Across the Nightingale Floor (Tales of the Otori) series although they always climax badly, Jonathan Stroud’s Bartimaeus series is decent fun even though it’s left wing. I am trying out Tudor fiction right now (Hillary Mantel, C.J.Sansom) which is a new territory for me.

I had never heard of the series before, and then some people at work were talking about taking their kids to this movie where teenagers are forced to fight each other to the death, and I started asking if they were talking about the original BR or a remake. I got a lot of stares when I explained what BR was. I’m starting to think that hunger games isn’t quite as violent.

promachus on June 16, 2012 at 11:06 PM

I liked fantasy a lot as a kid, but moved into the more historical fantasy genre in my teen years. I’d consider Game of Thrones to be more in the historical fantasy vein, what with the constant War of the Roses allusions. But lately I’ve been all over the place. Ender’s Game and Rendezvous with Rama got me more into the SFiction books than I used to be.

I’m just starting to read the Honorverse books (SciFi) and I’ve heard good things about The Dresden Files, which I think is fantasy, but I haven’t started reading them yet.

The Talkes of Otori, I think I’ve heard a little about that. Do the characters all have super-hearing powers? If so, I may have actually read the first book, as the title sounds familiar. But it would have been several years ago.

Buckshot Bill on June 16, 2012 at 11:09 PM

“Hunger Games” is “government gone wild” and class warfare, a look into the future. It was written for young adults and the violence is not as some portrayed it to be.

I enjoyed the trilogy immensely, it wasn’t something I would ordinarily read.

Good science fiction can really help you understand some of the more basic concepts of human society, economics, politics and the like, and how changing technology really effects peoples day to day lives.

Whereas Fantasy helps to understand how important myths are to maintaining civilization. A lot of human motivation, is born of myths and legends and the desire to relive them or become a part of them.

She’s never going to look at a speech as one long show. Her point of view is too otherwise. Obama acts to the mic, acts through the speech, acts away from the mic. One polished performance. Irony that Palin gives a speech like an academic presenting an argument. She’s not much different from Malkin, or even Coulter in that.

She’ll always be flippin’ through paper.

Axe on June 16, 2012 at 11:26 PM

My favorite books are the CIA, anti-terrorism books. I read all 12 books of the Vince Flynn series. He’s my favorite auther, Mitch Rapp is the best character in that he gets the job done and is not afraid to stand up to the BS bureaucracy in DC and in the CIA.

I hope Flynn is doing well as he’s been battling cancer for awhile now.

I also like Brad Thor and Lee Child (Jack Reacher) novels.

I don’t want to submit again. It huts … it huts.

Axe on June 16, 2012 at 11:35 PM

Sorry to butt in, Axe. Have you considered self-publishing in e-book format? I know several authors that are getting a foot in the door that way.

4Grace on June 16, 2012 at 11:40 PM

Vince has been Hannity quite a few times in the past couple of months. I had no idea he was ill.

I also like John Sandford and his Lucas Davenport (Buried Prey, etc)novels.

JPeterman on June 16, 2012 at 11:34 PM

Yeah I think he’s been battling prostrate cancer since about the end of 2010.

I missed all his appearances on Hannity, but I like guys like Flynn and Brad Thor who are conservatives and seem to “get it”.

What type of stuff is the John Sandford series about?

Dave is in the witness protection program. His new name is still Dave though. Aside from that everything else is the same. He is not here.

Ahhh, but how many keyboards did you have to go through to figure that out??? Inquiring minds want to know…

SWalker on June 16, 2012 at 11:42 PM

I love the Mitch Rapp series!..Any word on bringing him to the big screen?

tacodawn on June 16, 2012 at 11:35 PM

Check out Vince Flynn’s website. There has been some discussion for awhile now about making one or two of his books into a movie.

I’m kind of torn on it. It’d be good on one hand to see it on the big screen and for the series to gain more exposure.

However I’m sure movies would never be as good as any of the books.

LevinFan on June 16, 2012 at 11:42 PM

Hi Dire,

What event are you watching? Soccer or something?
