Ramirez — and others — on the reboot that wasn’t

posted at 11:21 am on June 15, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

So much reaction — so little bandwidth.  In earlier posts, we focused on reaction to Barack Obama’s reframing speech from Mitt Romney’s campaign and from the print media.  Let’s cast the net a bit wider and see what other reactions Obama’s booted reboot hath wrought.  First, IBD’s indispensable Michael Ramirez has a new editorial cartoon comparing Obama with the great Presidents of history — a pastime in which the White House often engages these days, too — and boils down Obama’s standing among his predecessors:

Two new video spots from Obama’s opposition attack the notion that the “reframing” speech reframed anything at all.  The RNC does this by cutting between yesterday’s speech in Ohio to a nearly-identical speech Obama gave in April and his State of the Union speech last January.  Obama basically cut-and-pasted his earlier efforts into this overhyped speech, which in fairness could be one definition of “reframing” (via Guy Benson):

American Crossroads has a briefer take on the same theme, but one with a little more bite to it.  Using a different theme from Peanuts than I did earlier today, the conservative group puts the familiar “wah wah wah” from the Charlie Brown television specials used when adults speak, as a way of arguing that no one’s listening to Obama’s repetitive droning any longer.  Viewers of The Ed Morrissey Show will recognize something else familiar — the background music:

Not to toot my own horn, but I was all over this meme almost a year ago.  In August 2011, after the US suffered the first credit rating downgrade in over 90 years, I put together some clips from Obama’s speech afterward to Caroline Af Ugglas’ “Nothing Left to Say”:

That’s the big takeaway from yesterday’s speech.  Obama has nothing left to say, and it’s more true today than it was last August.

As Someguy over at AOSHQ wrote, the ad writes itself:

“There are 23 million Americans who cannot find a full-time job in the United States under Barack Obama’s leadership.

Today, Obama announced a bold new plan to deal with that crisis: He announced that he will give 800,000 illegal aliens from Mexico job permits which enable them to take jobs from hard-working struggling Americans.

On November 6, you have a choice. On the one hand, you have Barack Obama handing your jobs over to illegal aliens. On the other hand, as my first act as president, I will on day one reverse this Executive Order and return these jobs to hard-working, tax-paying Americans.

Elect me, or your job may be next.

I’m Mitt Romney and I’m mad as hell, and I’m not going to take it any more. Join me.

Makes you wonder. It’s as if the usual see-saw campaign season model – candidate’s up one day, next day he’s down, and the other guy’s up– has been replaced by one inexorable slippery slope slide to the bottom. Maybe the Obama campaign hit that reset/reboot/replace/regurgitate button one time too many. Upset the balance of nature or something.

Slip slidin’ away…

I bet if Obama’s teleprompter was hacked and the text was modified, the hacker could get Obama to say that he’s a complete idiot and Obama would have no clue until the day after the speech.

Kingfisher on June 15, 2012 at 12:07 PM

Obama was singing the praises of Republican Presidents of the past: Lincoln, Eisenhower, Reagan. Let’s take his suggestion that we need another one!

FDR must be delighted, being credited (twice) with the signing the GI Bill after he was dead! Must have been after those fireside chats on TV in 1929…

Steve Z on June 15, 2012 at 12:09 PM

On second thought, I think that Obama was actually wise to repeat his previous speech. The Obama-bots are a bunch of dumbf*cking morons. As long as Obama repeats this attack against the “evil rich” and George Bush, his brain-dead OWS-type followers will continue to support him.

But I guess when speechwriters and speechmakers repeat themselves, that’s not considered plagiarism. Just Dumb. Boring. Monotonous. Lacking Original Thoughts. Demonstrating the Intellectual Curiosity Meme was a total myth and Mirage.

Back in the Carter administration, during the economic woes, gas shortages, and hostage crisis, there was a similar cartoon. It had Lincoln’s “House Divided Quote”, Teddy R’s “Walk softly and carry a big stick quote”, FDR’s, “The only thing we have to fear” quote, then it had little Jimmy with the same expression and pose as Jugears above. Jimmy’s quote was, “I’ll be in my room”.

History repeats itself.

What Obama is admitting too with this latest approach is simple:

He has had 4 years and he does not have the SKILLS, STAFF, TEAM or LEADERSHIP SKILLS to get the country on proper footing.

Instead of turning the car back onto the highway he has driven it over the cliff.

Obama’s own words an strategy are really and admission he has failed, not that he needs 4 more years.

Romney needs to constantly refer to this eceonomy as the Obama-conomy. ALL THE TIME. Never say eceonomy… Obamaconomy.

So the President likes illustrations, huh?

An ethnic high school is comprised of 50% kids of Bosnian descent, & 50% kids of Ukranian ancestry. The starters on their football team–we’ll call them the Americans–were 60% Bosnian (including the QB) & 40% Ukranian. The Americans do well for most of the first half of an important game, but in the final few minutes they give up three touchdowns, making it 24-17 at halftime. The coach had inexplicably replaced several of the Bosnians with Ukranians seven minutes before the end of the half. The coach somehow blamed the remaining Bosnians for the 21-point collapse, so he replaced several more Bosnians with Ukranians, including the QB. At the end of the third quarter, the Americans were losing 44-17. The new QB blamed the Bosnians. What should the coach do?

The school is the USA.
Bosnians = Republicans.
Ukranians = Democrats.
The first half was the eight years of Bush Administration.
The third quarter is the Obama Administration.
The QB = the president.
The offense = the House of Representatives.
The defense = the Senate.
The coach = the voting public.

tom on June 15, 2012 at 3:12 PM

No. Whatever you think, he’s the President. Show the Office some respect.

lostmotherland on June 15, 2012 at 2:53 PM

Do you even know what the office of the President entails? The President is the head of the executive branch of the US government and serves as Commander in Chief of the armed forces. In this role, it is the president’s duty to administer the laws passed by the legislative branch of the US government.

What the president did today just usurped that role as executive in charge of administering laws and stepped into the role of writing those laws himself. He himself, during his rambling speech, made the statement that because the DREAM act is stalled in Congress, he has taken it upon himself to implement the DREAM act himself via executive order while calling upon congress to get the DREAM act passed into law.

Do you, oh troll, have any inkling of exactly what that means? A president of the United States just “deemed” a law that he wants as passed, has implemented it by executive order, and is now demanding that Congress pass that act into law post-implementation. At this point, Barack Hussein Obama has passed from being President of the United States to Supreme Leader of the United States essentially ordering the separate and co-equal legislative branch to affirm his executive order by rubber stamping his actions by passing legislation he deems already in force.
