Obama to celebrities: “You’re the ultimate arbiter” of this country’s direction

posted at 5:56 pm on June 15, 2012 by Erika Johnsen

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama visited the home of actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick for a joint fundraising appearance on Thursday night, during which the president offered the gathered stars a rather frightening piece of flattery.

The intimate dinner banked about $2 million, with 50 people paying $40,000 each. …

Speaking in a dimly lighted, art-filled room, Obama told supporters they would play a critical role in an election that would determine a vision for the nation’s future.

“You’re the tie-breaker,” he said. “You’re the ultimate arbiter of which direction this country goes.”

Among the celebrities on hand to hear Obama’s remarks were Oscar winner Meryl Streep, fashion designer Michael Kors and Vogue editor Anna Wintour…

The president and Mrs. Obama also headlined a second glitzy fundraiser in Manhattan Thursday night that included a performance from singer Mariah Carey and remarks by singer Alicia Keys. The 250-person dinner yielded the Obama campaign at least $2.5 million.

Let me be clear.

ar·bi·ter

[ahr-bi-ter] noun

1. a person empowered to decide matters at issue; judge; umpire.
2. a person who has the sole or absolute power of judging or determining.

Who knows whether The One meant to merely butter up the glamorous group of One Percenters assembled specifically to give him gobs of cash, or if he actually believes what he just said — but either way, consider me outrageously outraged. I don’t think I could come up with a group of people less suited to the task of passing the “ultimate” judgment on the state of our nation.

I’m not knocking what celebrities do for a living — I enjoy the artistry of movies, music, and fashion as much as the next gal. But, if Mitt Romney is ostensibly “out of touch” with the middle class and “removed” from the issues concerning the common man because he was a movin’ and shakin’ businessman who earned a large fortune… I don’t even know what to say. The hypocrisy confounds me.

These wealthy Hollywood types seem to dearly love their Occupy-solidarity and their “war on women” and their extreme environmentalism, issues about which most Americans don’t care at all. President Obama heeds their opinions at his own peril, writes Michael Barone:

But there is one group of people Obama has to listen to: the people who give him large sums of money. He recently attended his 150th fundraiser. That’s more than the number attended by the last four presidents put together.

Obama has seen enough Architectural Digest-type interiors in Park Avenue triplexes and Beverly Hills mansions, and on the block in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights, where every house is owned by a billionaire, to develop an expertise in Louis XV walnut commodes and Brunschwig & Fils fabrics.

He’s also had plenty of chances to absorb the advice of the kind of rich liberals who like to give money to Democratic presidents. And the evidence that he has taken some of that advice is his initiatives on three controversial issues…

If the same-sex marriage reversal seems somewhat risky politically and the contraception mandate considerably riskier, the Keystone pipeline decision seems downright foolish politically. Voters tend to favor it by 2-1 margins, and if they’re not aware of it, the Republicans (and maybe the pro-pipeline unions) will make sure they are.

What Obama is saying is that these people have a significant role in forming the view of people. They have a huge psychological role in determining how people view things, what they see as good and bad, right and wrong, etc.

Schadenfreude on June 15, 2012 at 6:03 PM

O’s infatuation with vacuous celebrities, and vice versa, is the tip of the iceberg on what is upsetting independents. And it goes way way beyond the economy.

Eleanor Clift: Independents Souring on Obama
“Listening to these voters for over two hours, it was clear that their assessment of the economy is not as bleak as one would suppose, given their disaffection from Obama…”

The takeway from this: among the decisive swing group, independents, this election is not about the economy.

Their disaffection with Obama springs from issues beyond the economy, or, in which the economy is just a part of the bigger equation. Indeed, a clear distinction needs to be made, the election is about an out of control govt, not the economy. How is it out of control? Reckless runaway spending, and so many other ways.
While it would be a significant plus for Romney if the economy goes further south, don’t hang our hat on the economy. Hang our hat on the bigger issue, to which the economy is a subset.

Anna Wintour has believed this very thing for years. Sarah Jessica Parker, though, was surprised. She though her national authority ended with shoes and accessories.

The most unbelievable month of an unbelievable presidency. Every outrage one can imagine against the Constitution, against divided government, against allies, against national security, against our national solvency and international regard, and yet…this one just might stick with me the longest.

What sort of President of the United States do we have , who would say such a moronic thing to a room full of people like this? Actors, fashion pundits, over-bejeweled self-impressed urban elites. Poorly educated trendenistas.

i mentioned last night wrt Speilberg that artists follow their own muse…which is charming in its own way

but we should not be governed by the sensibilities of vaudevillians.

These people actually are just the propagandist arm of the left..the political theater. Barry is not a hard core totalitarian…however, if this country devolves into that, these people will know very plainly who they serve.

some of them may relish being the face of the proletariat…but in China, the artists aren’t so happy. Years ago during Mao (i guess) there was some sort of great book authored by his ‘literary’ cadre that he employed.

Recently the chi-coms more or less ‘asked’ today’s literati to re-copy the book as a celebration…each taking a chapter..most complied. Many felt the stab of betrayal..that no, they really weren’t all that free…and they complied.

MisterElephant on June 15, 2012 at 6:32 PM

The people involved in the film and television industry, as well as the fashion industry, have chronically overestimated to what degree they inform, or even influence, public opinion. The belief they hold that they can and do inform public opinion springs from their own core belief that Americans are really vacuous idiots who lack the ability to think things through and make their own decisions on cultural matters, ideological issues, or even what to wear. They presume that we are, all of us, waiting breathlessly for them to tell us what to think, how to feel, what to value or despise, and what to covet. Its predicated on the assumption that if something is seen on a screen or on the back of a celebrity everyone exposed to that viewing will be inspired to emulate it. In short, we are the thoughtless insipid masses.

Many of these people have no formal education outside of their own area of expertise, or ‘craft’, yet they are anxious to expound on everything from environmental issues to nuclear proliferation and certain that they have acquired the credentials to hold these opinions not through any actual study, but rather through some form of osmosis via their own celebrity. Many of these people are also possessed of a distinctly questionable character and are less than ethical.

For this president to tell them that THEY are the ‘arbiters’ of the direction of this nation… is a direct reflection on his own intellect and character.

Man, I miss the old studio system. You know, the old ways when the studio heads told the actor/actresses to shut up and read their lines like good employees because nobody wants to hear what a talking mannequin thinks. It’s too bad, really, that SAG broke the studio system down.

That this comment is so mocked and sparks so much outrage here is well indicative of why the left continues to gain ground.

Like it or not, he’s right. Our pop ‘culture’ does influence mores and thought processes of many, many people. It speaks to many who are not influenced by parents or schools or church.

But to acknowledge this would be to acknowledge that there is much heavy lifting for the right re: taking over institutions.

It’s so much easier to pretend that merely blogging about it or voting for Romney will solve our problems.
