Pentagon to recognize gay pride month for the first time

posted at 9:42 pm on June 14, 2012 by Allahpundit

Whatever you think of repealing “don’t ask, don’t tell,” gestures like this that demonstrate the military’s acceptance of the new law are helpful, no? Now that the legislative battle’s over, top priority is making sure that the policy is implemented with as little disruption to the force as possible. A bit of official recognition for gay pride month normalizes the reality of openly gay troops and signals that the brass doesn’t want them treated with hostility. Soldiers carry out orders with which they disagree to the best of their ability all the time; this is a form of that, or at least that’s how I’m reading it.

Then again, it’s unfair to assume that there’s any deep objection to repealing DADT within the ranks:

In the latest remarkable sign of change since the military repealed the “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, the Defense Department will soon hold its first event to recognize gay and lesbian troops. It comes nine months after repeal of the policy that had banned gay troops from serving openly and forced more than 13,500 service members out of the armed forces…

Although some feared repeal of the ban on serving openly would cause problems in the ranks, officials and gay advocacy groups say no big issues have materialized — aside from what advocacy groups criticize as slow implementation of some changes, such as benefit entitlements to troops in same-sex marriages…

Panetta said last month that military leaders had concluded that repeal had not affected morale or readiness. A report to Panetta with assessments from the individual military service branches said that as of May 1 they had seen no ill effects…

[Air Force 1st Lt. Josh Seefried, a finance officer and co-director of OutServe] said acceptance has been broad among straight service members and has put a spotlight on unequal treatment that gays continue to receive in some areas. “We are seeing such tremendous progress in how much the military is accepting us, but not only that — in how much the rank and file is now understanding the inequality that’s existing right now,” he said.

OutServe, a group for gay troops, says its membership has doubled but I don’t know that any broader conclusions can necessarily be drawn from that. It may be that the dynamics are different from unit to unit, with some troops feeling comfortable in coming out due to the attitudes around them and others staying closeted because they’re not so comfortable. I’m interested in hearing from military readers on that. Two questions. First, have you noticed any disruptions from the new policy in your unit? And second, if not, why do you suppose that is? Is it as simple as most troops not caring if someone’s gay or is there more to it? For instance, my hunch is that this might have been a bigger deal for a peacetime military that had more time to focus on its composition. After nearly 11 years in Afghanistan, though, and with new battlefields opening up all the time (soon maybe even in Iran?), there’s simply too much to do to spend much energy on this. But I don’t know; this is why I’m asking.

The term ‘gay pride’ is revolting. How can any man be proud of taking another man’s genitals into his mouth or anus? Homosexuality is a mental disorder.

Of course it is! (Unless you ignore every single major medical, psychological, and psychiatric organization in the US. But who cares what they think, right?)

theoddmanout on June 14, 2012 at 10:34 PM

They can continue such PC stunts like this, move to civil unions, then have the definition of marriage redefined, enact laws that will force churches to conduct same sex marriages, delete all references in the Bible, in short give homosexuals everything they want but they still will NEVER know peace, for when it’s all said done it’s wrong, unnatural and yes, a sin.

Truth is truth.

Are you really that stupid or do you not understand the military? They do have to acknowledge this and to a large degree participate. The posters and classes to celebrate this (for an entire month) with military personnel is unavoidable. If a military refuses, do you think they’ll be singled out. Oh you bet you ass!

And talk about drama queen! Your side lives and breathes on it emotions.

True story: I was doing a paper on rural gay communities and took a trip to a now closed gay bar in Decatur IL for some research. That night was the drag show and the closing number was a military veteran who had lost an arm in combat. It was a full on patriotic number, very USO show circa North Korean war. It was somehow equal parts heartwarming and *fierce!* Its just a shame that your bigotry would never allow you to see such a thing.

Seriously? If you describe heterosexual sex in the same way it would also seem gross. For example, why would anyone be proud of rubbing his genitals on a woman’s labia until his penis spits up. Ew, I just grossed myself out. Which is why I’ll never write something like that again. But these people write out their versions of gay sex over and over again. Its not just about “being accurate” its bout a fascination with (what they imagine) gay sex is.

libfreeordie on June 14, 2012 at 10:45 PM

Meh, who cares at this point. We’re going to run the board in November and will be able to roll back the progressive agenda. The conservative base — which is awake, finally — and LDS will put the screws to Romney to get some of this cultural rot rolled back. Affirmative Action, in all of its forms, needs to be done away with. Government-sponsored gay pride and this “diversity” nonsense also needs to be done away with.

The military only sees green. PERIOD.

You’re cute. You know, back in the day it was beleived that a woman had to have an orgasm in order to get pregnant. Annoyingly (for women) once scientists figured out how pregnancy actually worked they also began to argue that most women could not acheive orgasm. Thank heavens science eventually got its act together on that. In other words, scientific knowledge can change. And on this issue it has.

Observing Gay Pride month is a measure that will minimize disruption… how?

If you’ve never been in the military, you don’t understand that observing months — black history month, women’s history month — is something unit commanders and their senior enlisted advisors are expected to promote and participate in.

Why should a commanding officer or a sergeant-major or master chief have to celebrate Gay Pride month if he has a religious objection to homosexuality?

Indeed, why should anyone have to celebrate it for any reason? Why not celebrate Way-Happier Heterosexuals Month? If you seriously think there’s any reason to object to that, you have just proven why we shouldn’t require institutions to celebrate anything having to do with who people have sex with: because it’s idiotic.

I also worked to help homosexual criminals transition to life in the real world.

All of that to say I am informed on this matter. For anyone to say that this is problem-free is just bunk. The only reason they can say that is because they’ve suppressed all the problems. It is one thing to tolerate homosexuality. It is another entirely to have acceptance of it in every aspect of your life (remember: military service is 24/7) forced upon you–on threat of discipline if you dare say anything negative about it.

I don’t care what Panetta says. He’s a politician and will say whatever he has to say to keep his job. It is causing problems and having “gay pride month” will probably bring some of it to light.

Well because if you really follow the legacy of thought on the female orgasm and reproduction its still an overall upward progress towards greater knowledge of physiology. The same is true on human sexuality.

libfreeordie on June 14, 2012 at 11:04 PM

So what are you?

arnold ziffel on June 14, 2012 at 11:12 PM

How can you be proud if you “were born that way“?

It was no choice.

What’s the pride for?

Random chance?

profitsbeard on June 14, 2012 at 10:37 PM

Whole lot of evolutionists out there celebrating earth day.

I think we jumped that shark looooong ago.

TexasDan on June 14, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Speaking of sin…

faraway on June 14, 2012 at 11:13 PM

Of course modern psychology is unimpeachable… lol. I mean, accomplished neuroscientists will openly tell you that 90% of their own work is speculative crap, but psychology is waaay more exacting.

I mean, we’d NEVER have hard science like .. you know… climatology.. alter its findings to follow the PC money path laid out before it. So a subjective art like psychology obviously has even greater immunity to such pressures. I mean, it’s not like people who conduct experiments and publish findings demonstrating reality disagrees with liberal orthodoxy are called vicious names and lose their jobs… I can’t imagine why the various organizations have fallen into lock-step…

CapnObvious on June 14, 2012 at 11:13 PM

Sodomite Pride Month?

Fabulous!

CoolCzech on June 14, 2012 at 11:13 PM

Perhaps you’re confused about the entire underlying logic of the military, its one big act of group think on a certain level.

libfreeordie on June 14, 2012 at 11:06 PM

K, so you got nothing. And FWIW I don’t give a flying fig about DADT, but I do find requiring people not only to tolerate but to actively celebrate behavior they find morally objectionable to be well, … morally objectionable.

Firefly_76 on June 14, 2012 at 11:13 PM

Therefore, you can’t claim that the science that you’re claiming as fact won’t change in the near future.

blink on June 14, 2012 at 11:11 PM

I can claim there is a broad scientific consensus supporting the idea that sexual orientation is not chosen. Until proven otherwise that is the current scientific consensus. ALL scientific laws/theories are up for revision, which is what is wonderful about science. But just because scientific knowledge CAN change does not mean that its going to or that there’s any reason to doubt the current consensus.

libfreeordie on June 14, 2012 at 11:13 PM

As for the APA issue being a ‘conservative’ conspiracy, have you ever heard of ’81 words’?

WTF are you talking about? The decision was issued May 31, 2012.

Firefly_76 on June 14, 2012 at 11:15 PM

Why was your president fired?

blink on June 14, 2012 at 11:14 PM

No one knows. The faculty is in an uproar over it. There is some speculation that Sullivan opposed an aggressive attempt to digitize certain class offerings. We do know that the push out was engineered from forces within Darden (some e-mail leaks have come out) but even a few of the board members were kept in the dark.

libfreeordie on June 14, 2012 at 11:16 PM

UVA is where the Mann Hockey Stick was invented.

Why was your president fired?

blink on June 14, 2012 at 11:14 PM

I think Mann is at Penn State, no?

TexasDan on June 14, 2012 at 11:17 PM

Ever served,UES? I thught not. You may go home and curl up while sucking on your thumb in the requisite fetal position. Thanks, Sport!

ManWithNoParty on June 14, 2012 at 10:43 PM

…oh he still sucking…but it’s not on his thumb!

KOOLAID2 on June 14, 2012 at 11:17 PM

The military again is on the wrong side of history. Once preventives and cures are found for homosexuality, the ‘gay’ movements of the late 20th Century and early 21st will be seen as quaint artifacts of a more primitive medical era.

Military leaders will ask “what the h were we thinking?”

Firefly_76 on June 14, 2012 at 11:15 PM

The appeals court decision, which means that is not the first court case on the matter. I have heard about this southwest photographer case for years, but perhaps there are two…

theoddmanout on June 14, 2012 at 11:18 PM

I don’t anyone could get along with Bill Maher.

Punchenko on June 14, 2012 at 11:21 PM

Except for the fact that you just gave plenty of reason to doubt the current consensus – the last consensus was proven wrong.

blink on June 14, 2012 at 11:16 PM

There was once intense doubt that the earth was round. The existence of doubt doesn’t actually prove anything. When science moved from believing that the female orgasm existed to acknowledging that it did, it did so after a large number of studies were conducted using the scientific method. Until something equivalent is done to challenge the consensus on the biological nature of sexuality you don’t really have anything. Doubt is what leads to experimentation it doesn’t disprove consensus in and of itself.

libfreeordie on June 14, 2012 at 11:21 PM

Of course, psychology and biochemistry are totally equivalent sciences.

Would you like to a borrow a tin foil hat from me?

Looks like you’ll be needing it for the foreseeable future.

libfreeordie on June 14, 2012 at 11:12 PM

A church can’t violate the establishment clause. Read the 1st amendment. It’s not written to churches. It’s written to Congress. The 1st Amendment limits what Congress can do, not what churches can do.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.
