Open thread: Obama’s Chip Diller speech in Ohio

posted at 12:41 pm on June 14, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

As Barack Obama prepares for his “reframing” speech in Ohio at 1:45 ET today, Republicans on Capitol Hill have already produced a response to his likely strategy of whining about dealing with a do-nothing Congress.  John Boehner has a simple visual retort — standing next to a large table completely covered in jobs bills passed by the GOP-controlled House that the Democratic-controlled Senate has refused to consider. Of course, as Boehner reminds us, Senate Democrats haven’t even passed a budget in more than three years:

With President Barack Obama set to take his message on the economy to John Boehner’s backyard, the Republican House Speaker landed a preemptive blow Thursday with a video blaming Senate Democrats for a congressional logjam that has stalled bills meant to create jobs.

In the video, the Ohio lawmaker points to documents covering his desk, identifying them as House-passed legislation now blocked by the Democratic-held Senate.

“This isn’t just our work — it’s your work in progress,” Boehner says.

“You see, we’re going to keep adding to this pile, and we’re going to keep calling on President Obama and Democrats in the Senate to give these jobs bills a vote,” he says.

Meanwhile, Mitt Romney isn’t letting the opportunity to pass, either.  He will deliver his own speech on the economy in Ohio, which is scheduled to start five minutes after Obama starts speaking, at 1:50.  That assumes, of course, that Obama will actually begin his speech on time, as Gabriel Malor pointed out on Twitter:

The Associated Press reports on the battle of Ohio shaping up today, and the delicious karma:

Sharpening the choice for the nation, President Barack Obama and Republican presidential challenger Mitt Romney are offering dueling visions of how to fix the economy, framing in their most direct terms the fierce debate that will decide the November election. In a flash of campaign drama, the two are giving major speeches at nearly the same time Thursday from the same state, battleground Ohio. …

Romney will talk about cutting regulation and spending, overhauling the tax system, doing away with Obama’s health care overhaul and supporting a major oil pipeline known as Keystone XL. Setting his own expectations for Obama, Romney told donors in Cincinnati: “He’ll speak with great rhetoric and eloquence. But actions and records speak a heck of a lot louder than words.”

Without doubt, Romney and Obama have starkly different visions of economic rebirth, the issue of top concern for voters. To hear them tell it, Obama thinks Romney’s jobs philosophy is a failed notion of just cutting taxes and gutting regulation, while Romney says the president is a big-government defender who is stifling the free market at the cost of economic acceleration.

Of the two, Obama is carrying more of a political burden because, as the guy in charge, he is saddled with a lumbering economic recovery. Romney can largely blame the incumbent – just as Obama, as a candidate, benefited from blaming President George W. Bush.

One interesting factoid: the White House doesn’t have this speech on the President’s official schedule.  In fact, they don’t have anything on the schedule for Obama today, including an official event at the World Trade Center site to get briefed on progress.  Talk about lowering expectations

Let’s keep this as an open thread.  For fun, I’ll give you this preview of President Obama’s speech:

Maybe that’s a little too negative.  It’s probably more like this:

This lyric might actually appear in the speech: “I hope you learn it note for note, like good little children.”

Update: From the comments, we might expect a little lot of this, too:

Republicans refuse to raise taxes—even though they are lower than they’ve been in decades. That’s why the economy is not improving…why the jobs bill is voted down.

Good grief

North Korea is a workers’ paradise where everyone works in the interest of each other and where the state will provide for all of your needs. Granted, you will have to worship the Kim family — but still, you’ll get free healthcare, a ball of rice, and maybe get to live in Pyongyang.

Greece is another option, of course, but nowhere near as generous as North Korea. You’ve got options is the US of A is too miserable for your liking.

Have no problem with legal immigration at all.

This is such a lark. The reason we have illegal immigration is that we have tightened up the regulations on immigration since the Depression. If the floodgates were as open now as they were when Germans, Poles, Italians and other southern and eastern Europeans (who, by the way, Anglo saxons *hated* for most of the first half of the century) the same set of complaints would emerge. Nativist rhetoric now is pretty much the same as its always been, except now people act like the “illegal” label allows them to scapegoat and blame opportunistic central and south Americans because they’d rather now think about the way capitalism more than anything else encourages the flow of illegal migration.

You seem to believe that we evil capitalist don’t believe in any form of Government….ever! We want anarchy.

Oh wow, do you think you’re an “evil capitalist.” You’re not. You’re a pawn of capitalists and perhaps you are capitalist in the philosophic sense. Maybe you’ve even managed to cut yourself a tiny sliver of the pie of capital. But you’re not the one that capitalism is working for. How do I know? Despite you buying into the arguments about taxation as slavery and parroting most of the talking points of actual capitalist, uour position on illegal immigration reveals you don’t really have skin in the capital game. If you did you’d be thrilled about opening the flood gates for the cheapest possible labor in the marketplace.

Tell me, what is in the best national interest. To get people off of welfare and unemployment or to encourage illegal immigration?

The former. But the two are not mutually exclusive.

They have limited attention spans. No wonder Obama keeps running to college venues.

Well I just went and peeked in at DU, and they say this was the OMG BEST SPEACHIFYING EVARRRR!!! and that OBAMA WAS ON FIRE OMG PACKED TO THE RAFTERS!!! but I’m not sure what speech they were watching…

At least Scooter can go there and feel good about himself. I guess.

That really was a horrible speech. Nothing but a rehash of the same old failed ideas he’s been pushing for years. Tragic.

Where did you get your start up capital?

libfreeordie on June 14, 2012 at 2:47 PM

Uhm, maybe because I had saved some money when I worked in my previous job? Breathtaking but not surprising.

In the case of my business, the most important “star up capital” wasn’t the cash kind; I had to spend relatively little hard cash to start the business itself, as I run it out of my home. At the most, my hard cash layout was no more than $5,000. And about 35% of that went to satisfying governmental regulations.

No, the most valuable “start up capital” I had was my many years of previous experience working for the exact same kind of company I wanted to start. In other words, I didn’t have to learn how to run a business from scratch.

Meat Fighter on June 14, 2012 at 2:56 PM

They’ve always been bad speeches — smarmy, sarcastic, ridiculing, the faux ghetto accent, Hallmark pablum, and Marxist retread slogans — these lefty commentators just don’t have their rose-colored glasses on anymore. It’s actually kind of amazing to watch. It’s like they just woke up, and they’re all lookin’ at each other going “Who the hell is this loser on the dais…and does anyone know where I parked my car last night?”

And most people go into debt. The system is set up to encourage people take on debt in order to advance economically, which is why the vast majority of people take it on. Debt produces as much slavery as “taxation.”

Debt is voluntary.

Tax debt is not.

I’m sorry, but I thought you believed in capitalism. Isn’t capitalism always about finding the cheapest possible labor source?

libfreeordie on June 14, 2012 at 2:43 PM

Boy, you are ignorant aren’t you?

Capitalism is about making profit through a productive investment in material capital.

In my business I’m not always looking for the cheapest possible labor source because you get what you pay for and if you want the best product you may have to pay more for it because in the end it will be to your benefit.

But the key is to not pay more for labor than you have to and the trick is finding where that sweet pot is that you pay exactly what you should to get the product you want.

The fact that you don’t even understand this basic concept speak volumes.

PackerBronco on June 14, 2012 at 3:07 PM

Just turned on MSNBC myself. They seem happy with the speech now. Just bashing Romney’s “nonsense.” Guess that didn’t last long.

Obama in a nutshell. Note he forgot to pay the lunch bill – this from the I got stiffed with a bill for steak and martinis guy:

In a previously unannounced outing, the president had lunch with two active duty members of the military, both of whom are fathers, as well as two local barbers who are participating in an administration program promoting fatherhood.

The “Fatherhood Buzz” campaign is designed to “reach out to dads with positive information through barbers and barber shops as a part of the administration’s longstanding Fatherhood and Mentoring Initiative,” according to the White House.

“The more information we’re getting out there to folks about how they could take responsibility for their kids, make sure that they’re in their child’s lives, help support their mother even if they’re not living with the mother, makes a huge difference,” the president told the men over heaping plates of barbecue.

Explaining his administration’s efforts to support families, the president said that children with involved fathers are “are less likely to do drugs… girls are less likely to get pregnant.”

“That message is something that we want to make sure gets out there,” he said.

Soooooh, these barbers and military men wouldn’t have a clue about how to be a good father this if not for Dear Leader? Insulting much? And of course we all know why he is celebrating Father’s Day early. Is it so he’ll spend time with his daughters? I’m thinkin’ it’s to free the day up for another round of golf.

CONCLUSION:

Obama delivered a funerary performance, repeated meaningless, stale and tired beggary, generated as much buzz as a windup rubberband on a broken balsam wing while drearily casting blame and accepting none of it — a depressing appearance, a non-contributory speech, utterly forgettable;

vs.

Romney brought energy, enthusiasssm, insight and realism while addressing difficult situations with optimism, reflecting his capabilityn to meet demands without excuses.

I’d much rather be a “pawn” of a corporation, and work for my living, than be a “pawn” of the state, and sit on my butt hoping they throw me a bone.

At least the corporation PRODUCES something in order to grow and CREATE WEALTH.

All the state can do is Steal from the Producers.

Oh FFS. Taking on debt is a choice. I have a loan for my home, but no one forced me to and I could have continued on as a renter. I could get out of debt tomorrow by selling the home and being a renter again.

Slaves, on the other hand, cannot just decide one morning to say “I’m bored with this. I am no longer going to be a slave” and walk off. Or maybe it does in your world?

All choice. Why is this a difficult concept?

Nevermind. Just realized that liberals don’t like free will – it interferes with the talking points and government control.

Sorry. Carry on.

BTW it’s offensive Mr. Obama is using the WTC as a campaign backdrop.

The man visits for ten of fundraisers and glitzy events over the last several years. All of a sudden the election comes up and he “drops-by”.

Very disingenuous IMHO.
