Quotes of the day

posted at 10:30 pm on June 13, 2012 by Allahpundit

Senator John Cornyn of Texas tells National Review Online that the Obama administration’s refusal to appoint an independent prosecutor to investigate a series of intelligence leaks to the New York Times is a “cover up.”

“It’s all politics, all the time, at the Department of Justice,” Cornyn says. “Now that they’re in cover-up mode, they’re hiring Obama-campaign volunteers to look into the leaks.”…

On Tuesday, a few hours after calling on Holder to resign, Cornyn, along with Senator John McCain of Arizona, attempted to introduce legislation that calls for an outside counsel to investigate the leaks. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, promptly blocked the resolution.

***

And, here’s the big story:

“Machen, who lives in Silver Spring, is expected to move to the District while he holds down the job.

“Over the years, he has donated $4,350 to Obama’s campaigns. He gave $250 to Obama’s U.S. Senate campaign in 2003, a year before Obama, then an Illinois state senator, emerged on the nation’s political radar, according to campaign finance records.”

So Holder appointed a man who has his current job because Obama appointed him to it and has over the years given thousands to Obama’s campaigns. And we’re supposed to take this investigation seriously?

Has there ever been a more blatant conflict of interest?

***

As I pointed out in the same column, all administrations do this sort of thing. After al Qaeda’s 1998 bombings of the U.S. embassies in Kenya and Tanzania, for example, President Clinton came under blistering criticism for authorizing a retaliatory strike against what was reported to be a mere pharmaceutical factory in Sudan. Richard Clarke, Clinton’s top counterterrorism aide, was duly dispatched to inform the press that the U.S. intelligence community was certain the factory was being used by Saddam Hussein’s regime, al Qaeda and the Sudanese Islamist government for a joint venture in nerve gas production.

Like Libby’s disclosure, Clarke’s was in the national interest because it corrected damaging misinformation that could have discredited appropriate actions taken in American national defense. By contrast, the Obama leaks are fueling what are basically campaign ads. But, again, from a prosecution standpoint, that is irrelevant. The president gets to disclose classified information for any reason, or no reason.

That is why the leak controversy, first and foremost, is about holding President Obama politically accountable. It is silly to focus on legal accountability. That is not only a matter of considerably less importance; it is one as to which there is virtually zero realistic hope for satisfaction.

Forget the criminal investigation, which will just give knowledgeable witnesses an excuse to withhold cooperation from any congressional inquiry. Congress needs to focus on the culture of recklessness Obama has fostered regarding the nation’s defense secrets — beginning with the transparently political disclosure of classified memoranda about the CIA’s enhanced interrogation program and continuing up to these latest nakedly political, campaign-driven leaks.

***

It is up to Mitt Romney, as the leader of the Republican Party, to choose to make the Obama leaks a campaign issue.

So far, Romney has been silent on this and too many other issues. If he chooses to remain silent on the Obama leaks, he will surrender the issue leaving Obama to continue the leaking and gain whatever political advantage within reach. Instead, Romney could and should seize upon the issue. Romney should speak out quickly, joining in the bipartisan call for an investigation and asking the intelligence committees to hold the closed hearings to obtain the assessments of damage.

When — and if — the committees hold those hearings, Romney should use whatever they may disclose to make a major speech on the issue, calling the Obama administration to account for its actions against our nation’s security. It’s all up to Romney: he can be the leader of the Republican Party or sit silent, absorbing the damage to his campaign and ignoring the damage to our national security.

***

***

Chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, Peter King (R-NY), sat down with Jamie Colby today on America’s News HQ to discuss the investigation into the leaks on counter-terrorism programs. Congressman King said, “This is the most shameful cascade of leaks I’ve ever heard or seen in government. We’re not talking about an incidental leak coming out … We’re talking about leaks involving two of the most sensitive programs in the United States government.”

He said it’s “clear” from those stories published in The New York Times that the information “came from the White House, came right from the National Security Council, came right from the Situation Room.” Rep. King continued, “For the president to say he’s outraged by this … how come he said nothing about it until a few of us, including John McCain, stood up and took him to task for it.”

It’s hard to find good homemade cake with good homemade frosting. Baking is an art form of practice and skill. You need a large-in-number family, teenagers bringing home lots of friends and/or lots of reunions/church pot lucks to practice on. :)

SWalker on June 13, 2012 at 11:54 PM

These media nuggets are tasty and all, & I think Gov Romney should say something on this issue, but be circumspect and thoughtful doing so, putting country ahead of campaign, which he is more than capable of doing.

But until and unless we start to hear from other Intelligence Committee Dems like Ron Wyden and Mark Warner in the Senate and Adam Schiff and Dan Boren in the House, I dont think this story advances much.

Also appalled but not the least bit shocked that Attorney General Holder cant find a government attorney of any stature or integrity who isnt a long time Obama donor? Cmon dude. They do exist. To me thats a deliberate and obvious “screw you we dont take this seriously” move.

No. I disagree. I get what you’re saying, but if all liberals thought like Juan Williams I don’t think we’d be in the jam we’re in now. (Also, as an example, there would have been no recall effort in WI.)

I think Williams is a left-of-center democrat. I think the majority of democrats in this country today are far-far-far left. (Like socialists-left.) Further, I think the majority of republicans in this country today are right-of-center.

In other words, the political sprectrum has been skewed (far) to the left of the average citizen.

Just my opinion.

When leaks are criminalized
Wednesday, June 13, 8:10 PM
***************************

HERE’S A STORY that we’ve heard before:

The White House is suspected of leaking sensitive national security information to reporters for nakedly political reasons.

The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation, but some in Congress aren’t satisfied. They demand that an independent counsel be empowered to follow the evidence wherever it leads.

The last time an issue like this came up, some Democrats had strong views.

Rep. Nancy Pelosi argued that the possibility that the leak came from senior White House officials

created a conflict of interest for the attorney general and his staff that could be resolved only by the appointment of an outside counsel.

Then Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton and Joseph R. Biden Jr. agreed:

“I think it would be very difficult for the attorney general to oversee such an investigation,” said Ms. Clinton.

Then, of course, the Democrats were talking about the George W. Bush administration’s leak

of the name of CIA employee Valerie Plame,

whose husband’s attacks on the case for the Iraq war

had become a liberal cause celebre.

Now,

following stories containing disclosures about a cyberattack against Iran and an al-Qaeda double agent,

those same Democrats are happy to leave the investigating to the two federal prosecutors named by Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. last week

— even though one of the stories, which portrayed President Obama in a favorable light, was sourced in part to unnamed “members of the president’s national security team.”

Last week Mr. Obama indignantly denied that “my White House would purposefully release classified national security information.”

But the president has authority to declassify and disclose such information

and did so this year

when he spoke about the use of drones to target al-Qaeda operatives.

SWalker on June 13, 2012 at 11:54 PM

Lol.
I missed your comment, initially.

Yeah, what I’m saying is that there are basically two types of democrats these days.

The first are “traditional democrats”. These are people who grew up in democrat households. Their mothers/fathers (grandmothers/grandfathers) voted for FDR (over and over, again), and that’s just the way it was. (These are people who don’t know why they’re voting for democrats–it’s just what they’ve always done.)

The second type are the one’s you guys are talking about. The crazy, socialist, capitalist-hating, big-government a-holes who are ruining the country. (In my opinion, this is 20% OR LESS of the country.) They are the takers, the non-producers, the sponges who kill freedom.

There’s a big difference between the two groups.

Romney has done some good things with the Solyndra ads and some other quick respones.

Then you have the bad things like repudiating a superpac for even thinking of running Rev. Wright ads and now this.

Do not take this off the table and allow it to be used against you you Mitt!! Don’t be afraid and give into the left. The fate of the country rests in your hands!!

Continue to hammer Obama over the economy but also over the leaks/Holder corruption. Isn’t this exactly the kind of corruption that Americans don’t want to see in their gov’t? Isn’t that important??

Don’t take any issues off the table. Especially when the leaks are designed to falsely make Obama look strong on national security.

Bmore on June 14, 2012 at 12:41 AM

Redcrow- thanks. I get your premise. I may be wrong, I just don’t get how a total unknown flies in suddenly from Europe at the last minute and gets more votes than a sitting State Senate majority whip that balanced a State budget. A 26 year Green Beret. Good dude. It just didn’t make sense. mcSally is an awesome lady, but nobody knew her. She didn’t even live here. So it’s just my opinion that women voted for another woman. I got nothing to back that up. And I’m not bashing her in any fashion. She’s a warrior. First female A-10 combat pilot. Stationed her for a period of time. I would vote for her. But in the field of 4, she got more votes than she warranted in my opinion. We had proven track record state legislature people ready to move up. Kelly wasn’t one of them either, and he lost.

If McSally is serious, run for state senate. Work your way up. I’d vote for her in a heartbeat.

I guess you would have to live here to really understand. She ran for about 2 weeks before the election. Total unknown, and beat one of the best congressman this state has. I know the minutia, I have met them both. State senator many times, he’s everywhere. Keynote speaker at the 2008 tea party, when it was really BIG. He rocked the place.
I contend women are inclined to vote for women.

As someone who was a professional musician back in the 80′s I apologize. Those video’s are sooooo embarrassing. Not that I’m in any of them, but they sure look gay today.

SWalker on June 14, 2012 at 12:36 AM

Well, it ain’t my fault that cheatin’ Dire Straits decided to run a contest, and then weasel-out when the winner showed up.

Lol.

That was a good one! I’ll admit that I don’t recall hearing of the group before. I was just searching for a “reckless” theme. I’ll have to listen to more of their stuff.

By contrast, the Obama leaks are fueling what are basically campaign ads. But, again, from a prosecution standpoint, that is irrelevant. The president gets to disclose classified information for any reason, or no reason.

The president gets to disclose — that’s the key thing here. He gets to disclose information and is ultimately responsible for classification. His staff? Not so much. The things being leaked are damaging to national security and the fact that the president has not come out and approved the release of this information is damaging in itself.

The left sure seemed to think that the “Plamegate” BS was prosecutable and the same argument could be made as the Clinton analogy pointed to above. So McCarthy’s argument seems to have some holes in it.
