NBC reports demand for Holder resignation … but not why

posted at 1:11 pm on June 13, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Hey, NBC finally reported on Operation Fast & Furious! Of course, it took a high-profile call for the resignation of Attorney General Eric Holder to get them to do so, but at least they mentioned the scandal, in which hundreds of Mexicans and two US law-enforcement agents have lost their lives. That’s at least a good start.

Well and good, except for the fact that they didn’t actually link the resignation demand to the Fast & Furious scandal. NBC News last night cut the tape to make it look as though Senator John Cornyn demanded the resignation on the basis of the scandal over leaks from the White House on classified national-security operations, as our friends at Breitbart reported today:

Visit msnbc.com for breaking news, world news, and news about the economy

In the eighteen months since the Operation Fast & Furious investigation began, Brian Williams and NBC Nightly News have never mentioned the Department of Justice’s gunwalking controversy. Every single time Mr. Holder has testified or a major development happened, NBC Nightly News ignored it. Tonight, in their first mention of the scandal–ever–NBC Nightly News and Brian Williams distorted Attorney General Eric Holder’s testimony.

While the majority of the testimony covered Operation Fast & Furious, NBC made it appear that the hearing was mainly over the national security leaks. The segment even made it appear that Senator John Cornyn called for Mr. Holder to resign over said leaks when, in fact, he expressed his greatest frustration with Mr. Holder over Fast & Furious.

That small bit at the end is all NBC viewers know of the deadly gunwalking that took place on Holder’s watch, at least from NBC’s reporting of it.  No mention of the deaths.  No mention of the anger from the Mexican government over the lack of communication and coordination of the operation.  No mention that the House Oversight Committee has subpoenaed 240,000 pages of material, and Holder’s DoJ has only surrendered 7,000 — many of them so heavily redacted as to be completely blacked-out pages.  Not even a mention of the misrepresentations made by senior DoJ officials, including Holder himself, as to the timing and depth of knowledge of this operation, intended to embarrass gun owners and provide a pretext for tougher gun-control laws.

Perhaps those who only get their news from NBC might be curious enough after this brief clip to see how well the network informs them of current events … and start switching channels as a result.

NBC and ABC will not inform the public of timely info that’s either unfavorable to Obama and/or politically incorrect.
Here’s how badly ABC can irresponsibly report on a hot button topic.

verbaluce where you be? When you get your talking points please give us a response re. Holder’s stonewall.

arnold ziffel on June 13, 2012 at 5:48 PM

Does anyone really think the Republicans are going to do anything, especially Senators? I heard Senator Cornyn this morning on the radio, and he basically said that he doesn’t expect Holder to resign, but that the American people can get rid of him by voting out Obama. There is no fight from Senate or House Republicans on any issue. They are blowing smoke at conservatives, and they know the mainstream media isn’t going to report it.

lea on June 13, 2012 at 5:54 PM

What is the substantive case against Holder?
Mostly your complaint seems to be that the media doesn’t report that he’s an a**hole or something.
If there’s really anything here…what does that say about the ineptitude of Issa & co to produce anything of substance…at all.
Groupthink is not helping you.

Perhaps in your zeal to try to change the subject of the thread you missed this.

Fast and Furious reporting earns Sharyl Attkisson (of CBS) an Edward R. Murrow Award

I’m sure reporting lies and half-truths about Holder for the past 1.5 years helped Ms. Attkinson and CBS, get that verbaluce, CBS, not “Faux News”, earn this prestigious award in journalism.

But you already know that, don’t you?

verbaluce on June 13, 2012 at 2:47 PM

Wow, a Fact-Free Post.

First of all, Holder has Lied under oath to Congress.

Second, he’s stonewalled Issa’s Committee for a year and a half as far as supplying the requested documents. Said group asked Stedman for 170,00 or so documents, and in all of that time Holder’s given him about 4% of all of the documents.

Third, with the notable exceptions of C-BS and the LA Times, the rest of the Democrat Media has suppressed this story. If this had been a Republican Administration doing the same thing, they would have it on 24/7.

And finally, the Democrat Media, in a further desperate attempt to keep this scandal away from Stedman and his puppeteer O’bama, have coordinated a “response” via their mouthpieces that employs outright falsehoods. Their main False Talking Point? That Fast and Furious was “a continuation of Bush’s same program”, which was called Wide Receiver. Leftist Caricature Alan Colmes tried this line of reason just last night on “O’Really”, and was instantly laughed off the set by his sister in law and Bill.

But that is an outright Lie; the main difference being that Bush’s program actually tracked the guns. And was only 1/4 the size of F & F.

Devastating expose about F & F here…

Early on in the Obama administration Brian Williams bowed to Obama at the end of an interview. That, and the history of bias at NBC tells me that there is no way NBC or Williams is going to be doing any reporting that puts Obama in a bad light.

The Bush Wide Receiver program was also conducted with the knowledge of and cooperation with Mexico, IIRC. F and F was a maverick program instituted by the Obama honchos alone. Holder is intentionally blurring F and F with WR to exonerate himself and the O regime.

onlineanalyst on June 13, 2012 at 9:53 PM

I sure hope Romney brings this up in the debates or in ads. I bet only about 40% of the population(probably less, but I’m being generous) know what Fast and Furious is. As Rush pointed out today, Fast and Furious is a bigger scandal than watergate, and yet watergate was the biggest scandal in history and this is not even mentioned.

jeffn21 on June 13, 2012 at 10:48 PM

Who watches these clowns anymore anyway? Williams has more people watching him through the link on this site alone than actually watch live.

Can someone explain to me how network news can even support itself to me anymore? They must be relying on revenue from their more successful shows.

Oh, on second thought…

ccrosby on June 13, 2012 at 11:50 PM

I believe Brian Williams to be as bad a journalist as any of the recent network anchors. He is a groveling Obama-lapper.

Jaibones on June 14, 2012 at 6:38 AM

Isn’t Brian Williams the guy who was getting uptight with the Republican candidates during a debate a while back? Tough to figure out how these people manage to stay so self rightous. At least F & F got a mention, maybe viewers had a what-the-hell moment. The story will get out, don’t the fools realize that.

arnold ziffel on June 13, 2012 at 5:48 PM

Sometimes one has to do other things –
I ain’t here full time.

Can you let me know what you think Holder is stonewalling about?
Everyone keeps asking me to provide links to prove he didn’t do something – but what is it I need to say he didn’t do?
Some have said F&F is a devious a plot by Obama and Holder to pass gun control legislation – is that what he’s stonewalling about?
Is it that he ‘lied’ and this will be proved in documents yet revealed which will say something, though nobody says exactly what they’ll say?
Or is it about his deep secret support for the New Black Panther Party?
Or is it he top secret program to encourage and ramp up voter fraud and pass emergency legislation allowing Democrats to vote twice…or 3 times?
Or are you asking me when he stopped beating his wife?
