Video: The Life of Emily

posted at 12:41 pm on June 11, 2012 by Ed Morrissey

Last month, the Obama campaign tried to sell women — especially younger, single women — a life of government dependency in its unwittingly Orwellian “Life of Julia.”  Even women inclined to support Barack Obama objected to the characterization of women as wards of the state.  Polling results two weeks later showed that Obama lost significant ground among the demographics he had hoped to improve, and ever since, the Obama campaign has apparently relegated the eyeless, mouthless “Julia” to the Island of Misfit Campaign Mascots.

That doesn’t mean that critics have forgotten “Julia,” though.  A new video from the Center for Freedom and Prosperity features  Emily O’Neill, who accurately deconstructs the message from Team Obama within the first minute, with devastating impact.  Emily then proposes an alternate reality, called “The Life of Emily,” which relies on hard work, good economic choices, and rejects the need for a Hubby State for young American women — such as herself:

Dan Mitchell hails this a good instruction on the difference between empowerment and dependency:

But we also need a serious discussion of why dependency is a bad thing, which is why I’m glad the Center for Freedom and Prosperity has produced this new “Economics 101″ video.

It’s narrated by Emily O’Neill, who contrasts the moocher mentality of Julia with how she wants her life to develop. To give away the message, she wants the kind of fulfillment that only exists when you earn things.

Emily’s view could be considered Randian libertarianismconventional conservatism, or both. That’s because there’s a common moral belief in both philosophies that government-imposed coercion and redistribution erode the social capital of a people.

Women have a choice, as Emily demonstrates, at least for the moment.  They can aspire to become Julia the Moocher or Emily the Empowered.  Which message do you think will sell better over the next five months, and which offers the kind of paternalistic attitude that represents the antithesis of the women’s movement?

Emily would be better off without a bunch of cretins doing cat-calls and rhetorical pelvic-thrusts at her.

He got game. Not.

I used to think it was only attacks by Bill Maher, Chris Matthews and Keith Olbermann against Palin and Ann Coulter. But Meghan McCain and a few others gets savaged too from both sides. There are real gender-based attacks directed at women in public life.

The other side of that problem is the obnoxious, creepy complimenting of appearance. It’s really just as bad to ogle a woman as it is to ignore her as it is to insult based on her appearance. If you’re going to objectify every physically-attractive woman don’t complain when the right gets called sexist.

If you think this comment applies to you it probably does.

I mostly agree with you but think you are missing the mark when it comes to message. Emily O’Neill’s message, like that of Julia, target women. Ms. O’Neill’s message could be applied to either gender. Women do have a choice to become “Julia the Moocher or Emily the Empowered” but there are male equivilents whose existence is ignored as the pandering to women continues.

Girl: 8.2
VIdeo: 6.9

While well-intentioned, the video I think doesn’t quite score a direct hit. The narration goes far too fast to follow and digest what is being said, and the graphics zip by in a blur and can’t really be deciphered in their two-seconds-per-image screen time.

Another problem is that it starts out with some impenetrable and uninteresting statistics, and doesn’t get to the philosophical underpinnings until later in the video.

Recommendations to The Center for Freedom and Prosperity for their next video:

1. Keep Emily.
2. Tell her to talk a bit slower.
3. Enunciate the basic moral philosophy of self-reliance and condemn the slavery of nanny-statism FIRST in the video before graduating to specifics.
4. Use undeniably feminist language, less wonk-y economic language.
5. Simplify the graphics, and leave them on the screen for a longer time.
6. Remember that you are addressing undecided modern female voters, and NOT addressing yourselves or people who already think like you.

Well, anyway, what the hot blonde was saying was perfectly reasonable, but current high-school graduates are probably going to be mature enough to listen to it at about 45. They seem to be taking their time lately. They are over-sexed, but that isn’t maturity; the idea that they are maturing faster seems pretty silly. Sometimes it doesn’t seem that they are maturing at all.

She & Dan Mitchell are seeking extra views & attention by putting her, wearing non-professional garb, in the video.

Not sure what you mean by “what she gets.”
No, she doesn’t deserve to be raped. *facepalm* I’m not into honor killings either. *double facepalm*

Take a closer look.

She’s wearing a red top and jeans – just like the “Emily” graphic character they are using to portray the anti-Julia.

It’s subtle, but pretty awesome once you realize it.

If you’re male and you’re complaining about her attire, something is wrong with you.

Out: Idiotic, moochin’ Julia portrayed by a cartoon graphic

In: Smokin-hot, independent thinkin’, get ir done yourself, 100% female flesh Emily
