New savior of Al Gore’s Current TV: Joy Behar

They hired Olby with an eye to creating an angrier, more activist, more, um, “intellectual” version of MSNBC in hopes of capturing the edgy young liberal audience for whom Lawrence O’Donnell and Rachel Maddow simply aren’t pompous and hyperpartisan enough.

So naturally, their first big hire after he leaves is a borscht-belt-style comedian turned “View” co-host.

Beginning this September, Joy Behar, Emmy® award winning talk show host, will make her return to primetime on Current TV’s new hour-long series. “The Joy Behar Show” (working title) will air nightly Monday through Thursday at 6pm ET and will repeat later the same evening in primetime. The timely and topical series will showcase Behar’s trademark sense of humor and unique brand of conversation and provide her with a platform to discuss the latest headlines, pop culture events and anything else that comes to mind.

Featuring a regular rotating ensemble of journalists, analysts and political satirists the program will focus on political events, social issues and relevant topics that impact the American zeitgeist. Her ensemble cast, title and premiere date will be announced later this summer…

“Joy Behar is a beloved veteran television personality with her finger on the pulse of what viewers care about,” commented Current TV Chairman and former Vice President Al Gore. “Millions of Americans tune in daily to hear her take on the issues along with her inimitable style. We are honored that Current TV will be Joy’s new primetime home.”

The new line-up will be Behar, Cenk Uygur, Eliot Spitzer, and Jennifer Granholm, which is dreadful as a four-hour block of political television but might not be half bad as the nucleus of an awful-yet-compulsively-watchable left-wing variety show. Joy in the Joan Rivers host role, Cenk as affable Andy Richter-esque sidekick, Granholm as the straight (wo)man, and Client Number Nine as some sort of Dean Martin figure wandering the set with drink in hand and firing off double entendres to the audience’s delight. Magical.

Exit question: If they were in the market for an obnoxious left-wing woman comic, why didn’t they go for the gold with one of the two Rosies? Lord knows, they’ve got the right outlook for Current.

It is now very apparent that Algore is very very very desperate if he is hiring on certified Bozo-buckets like Behar-dy har-har!

The new line-up will be Behar, Cenk Uygur, Eliot Spitzer, and Jennifer Granholm,

I don’t think Hannity and O’Reilly are meeting with the Fox execs on how to stop this onslaught of talent…

Does anyone else have “Wicked Witch of the West” music running through their head right now?

Is there anything Joy Behar can’t do?

All trash, all the time.

The hiring of freaks. It’s all they’ve got.

so-notbuyingit on June 12, 2012 at 9:52 AM

The only thing Joy Behar will have to do is be sure she never agrees to give Al Gore a massage.

Joy Behar is really Bill Maher with a bra.

“Harridan Central”

Now, with fewer viewers than before.

“…”Wicked Witch of the West”…”

I was thinking more like ‘Wicked Witch of the Left’ but then realized that role was being played by Nancy ‘Botox’ Pelosi.

At least superficially, one of the hallmarks of her life seems to be a bit of an aversion to lengthy names, at least ones of Italian derivation . . . three of which the “poor girl” was saddled with as an infant. According to a few sources, she was born in Brooklyn.

The soon-to-be 70 year old Ms. Behar, nee Josephina Victoria Occhiuto kept her first husband’s surname (Joe Behar) following their divorce over 30 years ago (1981), after 16 years of marriage. And, she had been in a long term relationship with a man named Steve Janowitz pretty much since then with a guy who she finally married just last year, after having publicly called off an “engagement” announcement on air at The View, because people kept talking about it.

Back in those simpler times, she and the first hubby were just plain old “Joe and Joy Behar.” How droll!

He was a college professor, and, she was teaching high school English in Lindendhurst, L.I., NY, a “south shore” Suffolk county suburb out on Long Island, where she began dabbling in stand-up.

In college, she had majored in “sociology,” and, earned a Masters (M.A.) in English education thereafter.

Fun facts:

1.) In the ’30s, prior to the beginning of the War (WWII), Lindenhurst earned a bit of a questionable reputation (along with several other NY and northern NJ communities) as a locale for a group of Americans who were also quite open Nazi sympathizers, including several key members of the German American Bund. One of the key leaders (the treasurer) of the GAB was Lindenhurst resident Carl Bergler, who actually served in that official capacity over a period of years. His citizenship (obtained in 1930) was eventually revoked in 1944. The bank account for the group had been kept in a Lindenhurst bank by Mr. Bergler.

Many of these folks held very strange beliefs about what they saw as similarities American democracy and the type of fascism that was then taking firm hold in Germany and Italy, having concluded, as many of them did, that they were quite reconcilable ideologically!

Thus, many of these people claimed to be both patriotic Americans and admirers of the then-growing fascist movements in both Germany and Italy. The U.S. Government ended up revoking the citizenship of many of them on the grounds that they had been obtained through fraud.

2.) Joy Behar once told Charlie Rose during an interview, that she remembered her grandmother kept a photograph of Benito Mussolini in her home.

Josephina was born in 1942, so think about that for a moment!

Her strong left-wing orientation may reflect an understandable reaction to a discomfort she had felt with some of the particular circumstances of her past. But the irony may be that she has now ended up embracing an ideology of strong, centralized statism, one that in some key ways is beginning to take on some of the attributes of what she has long rejected.

She will be right at home with the collection at current. Looks like she and Ed Schultz may be identical twims, seperated since birth? Really.

Don’t have cable, and if this Current TV is representative of offerings by the cable folks, it is not likely I’ll ever sign up for this crap. Life is too precious to waste that much time on mindless dribble.
